SHOPPING TIP Choose a fruit that
feels heavy for its size, a sign it has
lots of juice inside.
Try it now . . . Pomelos
→ Blend one into a dressing. “To a food processor, add a small knob of ginger (about the size of a garlic clove) and a cup of diced peeled
apple; pulse several times. Add two table spoons each of lime
juice and fish sauce and a quarter cup of pomelo juice, and pulse a few more times. With the machine running, gradually stream in a quarter cup of olive oil, and blend until smooth. Season with salt and pepper. Add the pomelo segments to any salad, and drizzle with the dressing. Or you can add seafood or meat to
make it meal-worthy.”—Wesley True
→ Serve it as a topping for fish. “Peel and segment a
pomelo, squeeze all the juice from the ‘skeleton’ that’s left, and set the segments and juice aside. Trim and thinly slice a bulb of fennel, and toss the pieces with two tablespoons of olive oil, three tablespoons of chopped fennel fronds, the pomelo segments, and a pinch of salt. Drizzle the pomelo juice over cooked fish like trout, cod, or halibut; top with the pomelo-fennel mixture; and garnish with chopped toasted almonds.”
—Jeremy Fox, executive chef at Rustic Canyon in
Santa Monica, California
→ Make a sweet-and-spicy salsa. “Peel and dice two pomelos and two avocados. Stem eight sprigs of tarragon, and remove the seeds from two chillies. Mince the chillies. Thinly slice three spring onions and four radishes. Add all the ingredients to a bowl, squeeze in the juice of half a lemon, season with a half teaspoon of salt, and mix it all together. Serve this fruity salsa over pork or as a dip for chips.”
—Daniel Holzman, chef and coowner of the
Meatball Shop in New York City
Cut into the skin before
peeling.
Remember Tambun pomelos? Isn’t it a great snack to pick up on a road trip up north? They taste like a combination of mild grapefruit and sweet orange, and are a perfect go-to when you want a hit of citrus, says Wesley True, the executive chef at the Optimist in Atlanta. This Vitamin C–packed fruit is delicious with sautéed greens as a perfect counterpoint to their bitterness. So throw some in when you do a stir-fry or salad next! Or try these ideas:

NNo wonder you’re confused. Depending on when you read or listen to the news, you’re working out either too much or not enough. Last November, shortly after headlines praised the seven-minute workout, emerging research lowered the bar to one minute. (The study, published in the journal PLOS One, found that doing just 60 seconds of intense exercise within an otherwise easy 10-minute workout three times a week boosted endurance and lowered blood pressure.) But if you were paying attention last April, you might have felt like a slacker. That’s when a study in JAMA Internal Medicine pinned the magic number at more like an hour a day: It found that people who at least tripled the government’s guidelines of 75 minutes of vigorous exercise or 150 minutes of moderate exercise a week were the least likely to die prematurely.
The truth is, what’s best depends largely on your goals and how hard you’re willing to push yourself. “Everybody wants a clear idea of what exactly they should be doing, but there

See the lightBrightening up your environment can boost your energy, slim you down, and improve your health, cutting- edge research says. But to harness the power, you need to smartly work the rays into your day. Here’s the plan. By MIREL KETCHIFF
Scientists, after extensive studies, are finally beginning to fully understand the crucial effect that light has on our internal systems. “The light receptors in our eyes communicate directly with the brain, syn-chronizing the circadian clocks that affect our immunity, appetite, mood, energy, and even pain tolerance,” says Charles Czeisler, M.D., Ph.D., the director of the Division of Sleep and Circadian Disorders at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. Exposing yourself to the right rays at the right time has a huge impact on every aspect of your health. →

SHAPE Hottest Trainers
Carol Leong, 32, Senior Manager & Circuit Coach Of Curves MalaysiaFitness motivation is easy to find, but hard to keep. As life happens, priorities change – and exercise is the first thing that gets dropped. It’s my responsibility to ensure that my client stays on track, doesn’t give up on herself, and gets her results! I’m definitely hard on my clients, but they love it and I know when to tone it down.
Music zones out all your thoughts, and the higher the BPM, the better! It allows you to focus on your workout and move with high intensity. As a trainer, when I’m energised, I’m able to bring that drive to my circuit.
Capoeira uses muscles you never knew existed – and the moves are beautiful. That’s why it’s one of my faves. The other being Curves’ 30-minute Circuit Workout.

Matin Fayzal Johanabas, 27, Head Coach At Fuel Athletics, Damansara HeightsA girl outran and outlifted me once, and that propelled me straight into fitness! Prior to that, it was mostly football and ultimate frisbee for me. As a trainer, I’ve learnt to practice what you preach. If I work out a certain way, I make sure my client does the same too.
Functional training improves the way you live, adding quality to your day-to-day life. My own routine starts with a five-minute meditation, and then it’s stretching, warm-up, strength training and metabolic conditioning. This is a relatively new style in Malaysia.
I’ve heard my share of excuses, but the ‘best’ has got to be: “Waze sent me to McD.” All jokes aside, trust yourself and don’t quit. A gym where you can have fun helps! IG: @fvyzvl

Karen Siah E-Ling, 29, Fitness Coach & Founder Of Kia Kaha FitnessMake time for your health and fitness. Everyone is busy; time is not going to free up by itself.
there aren’t any shortcuts. Find someone who managed to drop the excess kilos/ succeeded in a marathon/ etc., and ask them how they did it. You’ll discover just how much hard work, commitment and perseverance are required.
I find so much satisfaction from a good run; it’s when I feel most at home. So it goes without saying that I prefer cardio, but you do need weights; they make you a faster, more powerful runner.
I’m not a health freak who only “eats grass”! I eat frequently, in moderation. I take little to no sugary drinks, lots of good protein from fresh meat and veggies, and plenty of H
2O.

Haziq Amirudin, 25, Personal Trainer At Jatomi Fitness, The Weld, KLSometimes, tough love is necessary. You may not like a workout that’s been designed for you, but that’s where explanation and demonstration come in. If you still don’t understand the purpose of your training, then your trainer has failed.
Clients are more confident to train in a safer environment. CrossFit’s fantastic, but it needs strict supervision, especially at the beginning, else you’ll be picking up injuries.
Just power through your weight-loss efforts even when you’re struggling, and you will see results! You need cardio, weights… and a training partner! They can give you that extra boost of motivation. And never starve yourself; eat according to your needs.
My biggest gym pet peeve: when people don’t re-rack their weights. You want to build muscle? Re-rack those weights, bro. IG: @fitxcoach13

Kimbeley Yap, 30, Movement Specialist At DailyMuscleyou don’t need to be an athlete to be successful in getting fit and staying healthy. But it’s vital to give your best at every workout, even if your best today is nowhere near what you accomplished yesterday. We all have our good days and bad days.
I think cardio’s overrated and boring! I often use weights (kettlebell’s my favourite) circuit style; you get the benefits of both in a single workout.
My diet consists mainly of food that my grandfather would recognise. Movement aside, if you want to shed some kilos, pay attention to what you eat. Nutrition is more important than exercise. kimbeley.com
Kevin Andrew, 27, Gym Manager At Fitness Connection, Kota KinabaluI was tired of the skinny boy looking back at me in the mirror. That was why I started training and eating right. When I saw progress, it became an addiction. People started asking: “How did you do it?” And so, I began coaching.
For me, training’s like fishing. Too tough and you may break the real; too soft and the fish will get away. But I’m here to help you achieve your fullest potential, and to do that, you need to bust out of your comfort zone. Trust the process!
no matter how experienced you are, never stop learning. American science educator Bill Nye once said, “Everyone you will ever meet knows something you don’t.” I always keep this quote in mind. I look up to Kevin Zahri; he’s my fitness guru. kevinandrewfitness.com IG: @kevinandrewofficial

Chen Lee Fong, 33, Freelance Personal TrainerI don’t believe in ‘crushing’ my trainee and making them puke. That doesn’t serve any purpose. I prefer using a step-by-step progression plan based on your capacity; this builds self-confidence and pushes you at the right time and intensity. But above others, I believe in mastering proper form and technique first.
understand and listen to your body. the key to weight-loss success is to set a realistic goal and focus on achieving it.
I train six days a week; two days each for horizontal press-pull, vertical press-pull, and lower body. I have my own gym equipment at home, so that’s where I normally work out. When I’m not training, I stay active by walking my dog! chenleefong.wordpress.com
Faith Nathene, 23, Part-Time Coach At Crossfit Kinabalu/X45 Fitness, Kota Kinabalu, Sabah; Athlete & Events ManagerSometimes, you have to have your ego and pride smashed for you to realise that there’s still room for improvement. But pushing someone too hard may scare them off, so I see how far each client is willing to go and adjust to that.
rome wasn’t built in a day; you might not see and feel it, but rest assured that after each sweat session, you are inching closer to your goals. Personally, American athlete Lauren Fisher depicts everything I want to achieve.
At the end of a CrossFit class, I feel like I’m floating between consciousness and euphoria! Any workout that involves the barbell is good for me, and I usually have my power playlist on. Galantis, anyone? IG: @wheresfaith
