Commander’s Message: Marjorie Green Joseph Greetings! I hope that everyone enjoyed their holiday season. Now we can start the countdown to the first day of spring and boating season! We had a successful Change of Watch in January and your staff officers are hard at work planning for a busy spring and summer. In addition to all of the usual public education classes and member training, watch our web site for announcements about new offerings. Winter is the perfect time to think about how you want to get involved in Flotilla 65 and the Coast Guard Auxiliary. Whether you are a new member or someone who has been a member for years, there are many options available. It doesn’t matter if you only have a limited amount of time to volunteer or can commit to something on a weekly or monthly basis. Feel free to talk with anyone who seems to be doing something that interests you. If you’re not sure what you would like to do or who to contact, contact me and I’ll help you find something that will be a good fit for both your interests and available time.Stay warm and safe this winter. Margie

Boat Crew Spring Work: Get Ready for Operations 2017by D. Mitchell

As the years go by, more and more items are added to the preparation list for boat crew participation. Some requirements are NEW. Start planning now - this winter/spring - to be ready for on the water operations this season. Perhaps this checklist will help:Qualification/REYR: Check Laurel Carlson’s report to

assure that you are current. Attend to any lingering REYR issues ASAP.

Equipment:• PPE Inspection - Jeff Santos will soon schedule inspection opportunities for all PPE. Watch for

them and attend the first one you can. • Keep your equipment in condition for inspection, for example: strobe light work?, inflatable

expired?, all tied in place?, PLB tested?• NEW: Jeff will supply and issue you a required SAR vest and knife.

Uniform: Check to assure you have what you need for ODU: T-shirt with white/silver lettering, AUX cap, coat with correct attached patches, trousers, belt, boat shoes - all in good condition. Questions: Ken Mingola FSO-OP.

Training (see next article for MT opportunities):• NEW: Complete this year’s required Operations

Workshop. Two offering dates are now available on the website. Scheduling questions: Aaron Leger FSO-MT. Requirement: Ken Mingola FSO-OP.

• TCT up to date: you need 1 hour or 4 hour this calendar year.(Assumes you did last year’s training). One hour classes are ready for registration on the website.

• Mandated Training: ICS/FEMA and USCG courses must be completed and kept up to date.

• Check rides: Check the report from Laurel Carlson FSO-IS to see if you need a check ride this season. If you do, watch for opportunities to complete that before the season ends.

OPFAC Owners: Be sure to get inspection sooner than 45 days after last year’s inspection date. Question: Ken Mingola FSO-OP.

Questions: Equipment - Jeff Santos. Data/Qual: Laurel Carlson. Operation Requirements and Opportunities - Ken Mingola

DISCLAIMER: This list was completed with available information 15 Feb 2017 which may be modified or corrected as we approach the Operations season. Stay tuned. (photos file D. Mitchell)

2016: Big AUXOP Year for FL65by Laurel Carlson FSO-IS2016 was a "big" year for AUXOP. I looked at all the AX2 (the revised AUXOP program) qualified people and found the count as follows: From 2011 to 2015 eight AUXOP awards were earned - average 1.6 per year.In 2016 five FL65 members earned AUXOP: Aaron Leger (Jan 2016), Roger Choquette (July 2016), Bob Joseph (July 2016), Marge Joseph (Sept 2016) and Mike Mulroy (Oct 2016).AUXOP is earned by completing a program of courses of operational skills, technical information and leadership. The nearby photo shows Marjorie Joseph receiving her AUXOP from BMSC Riemer at the January FL65 CoW.

Division 6 Restructure: 64 Becomes Maritimer’s FlotillaRecently Flotilla 64 became centered at Massachusetts Maritime Academy. It is in the Auxiliary University Program so Its bridge consists of cadets elected by the flotilla. In the photo, from left, are Rochelle Gaudette FSO-SR 64, Jeff Santos 65, and Connor Pascale FSO-CS 64 as they attended the Div 6 CoW. Jeff is mentoring Connor on communications qualifications.

Auxiliary participation can build a cadet’s resume for Coast Guard or other employment.

Welcome Aboard Cadets!

Seen On Patrol: It’s Been a Long Winter MSO patrols continue thru the winter as weather and vehicle availability allow. Shown in the photo are those on patrol 2 February 2017. On lookout, they reported not seeing their shadows and recommended that we immediately begin to put the docks back in the water as winter must be nearly over. FL65 in Southern Region: Snowbird DetachmentSouthcoast has egrets, but this one was photographed taking off from a mangrove swamp in southern Florida. (photo by M. Warters) It may have gone south, as have many FL65 members. Some FL65 members are active with Florida flotillas during their seasonal climatic exile.

Don’t forget our Snowbird Detachment struggling with the heat and humidity as we in the north enjoy winter activities like skiing, skating and shoveling, with lots of hot tea and other warming beverages.
