The Annual Chai Campaign accounts for almost 15% of the Temple’s revenue. A small group of dedicated members work each year to reach all Temple members to promote the Chai message. FY16–17 was a record year for The Annual Chai Campaign in terms of number of donors and dollars raised. Close to 60% of Temple members participated in FY16–17 and the giving amounts are in the pie chart below. Our goal is 100% Temple participation.

The financial mission of our Temple is to set dues and tuition to be as inclusive as possible, fund programs and services that reach all, and provide a religious school to teach our young. The Board and Finance Committees work very hard to achieve this in a fiscally sound manner. A breakdown of Revenue and Expendi-tures in FY16–17 are in the charts shown at right.

We also strive to plan for our Temple’s long term financial health by raising funds for our endowment through special events like Shalom Rim and Shir Beth and allocating monies to the endowment in years where there is an operating surplus. FY16–17 was such a year and we were able to make $44,000 contribution to the Temple endowment due to the generosity of our congregation. The market value of the endowment as of June 30, 2017 amounted to a little over $482,000, and inclusive of the transfer of $44,000 approved in September 2017, the adjusted amount was $526,000.

A MESSAGE FROM MARC DOHAN AND JEANETTE MACHT

Temple Shir Tikvah34 Vine StreetWinchester, MA 01890

Dear Members of the Shir Tikvah Community:

Enclosed is our 2017 annual report. We want to begin by thanking you, our members, for making last year a year of successes.

Here are a few of the highlights from the past year:

• Committing to a sacred partnership with our clergy leaders, Rabbi Cari and Beth Levin by signing new contracts

• Strengthening our connection to Israel as 72 of us took a second congregation-wide trip to Israel

• Preparing our children for the future with programs connecting our fifth and sixth grade students with elders

• Broadening our community by reaching out to both young families and becoming more dementia friendly

• Replacing our old High Holiday prayer books through the Nefesh (“Soul”) Refresh campaign

• Caring for all by comforting those in need and consoling those who mourned

• Making the wider world a little better by advocating for criminal justice reform, supporting immigrants, speaking up for climate change, and planting and providing food for the poor

All of this was possible, because we had a record Annual Chai Campaign, which allowed us to remain financially strong and open to all, regardless of ability to pay.

This report includes the temple’s annual financial information for the 2017 year. We invite you to read through the information and, if you have any questions, please contact Cliff Manko.

Thank you to all of our staff, leadership, donors and volunteers for all you do to make Temple Shir Tikvah a caring, vibrant, spiritual and joyous community for everyone.

We wish you all a sweet and joyful new year.
