Columbia 70UMass Lowell 77LOWELL, Mass. – The Columbia women’s basketball team suffered a 77-70 defeat to UMass Lowell on Wednesday evening at the Costello Athletic Center.

Columbia (1-2) was outrebounded by 11 and UMass Lowell (1-2) turned 23 offensive rebounds into 24 second-chance points. After trailing the entire fourth quarter, the Lions tied the game with 1:40 remaining on a Maya Sampleton basket that capped a 12-3 run. However, it proved to be Columbia’s last basket of the night, as the River Hawks scored the final seven points to earn their first victory of the season.

Three Lions ended the game in double figures, led by senior Camille Zimmerman’s 17 points on 7 of 14 shooting. First-year Riley Casey scored 12 points, marking the third consecutive double-figure scoring game to begin her collegiate career, and junior Abby Lee had a season-high 11 points thanks in part to hitting 3 of 5 from long range. Zimmerman added 10 rebounds for a double-double.

Junior Brianna Rudolph scored a game-high 18 to lead a trio of River Hawks in double figures. America East Rookie of the Week Paula Lopez had 15 and fellow freshman Linda Svenne rounded out the group with 14. Junior forward Oda Shackelford skied for a game-high 11 rebounds, including six on the offensive end. Fellow forward Kayla Gibbs also crashed for six offensive rebounds.

Columbia committed 31 fouls that led to 35 free throw attempts for UMass Lowell. The River Hawks were only able to connect on 19 of them (54.3 pct.), but kept the Lions away from the foul line until midway through the third quarter. Columbia ended the game 5 of 9 from the charity stripe.

The Lions started the game well and led for the majority of the first half. Ahead 7-6, Camille Zimmerman scored the game’s next eight points to put the Lions on top by nine just five minutes in. UML quickly answered with the next seven points over a span of just 34 seconds and regained the lead, 20-19, on a Louro 3-ball at the 2:22 mark. Columbia was able to take it back by the end of the quarter on one of Abby Lee’s three triples in the contest.

After combining for 46 first-quarter points, the two sides slowed down to score just 22 in the second quarter. The lead changed hands four times in the period with neither side leading by more than two points for the last 7:13 before halftime. Late buckets by senior Jillian Borreson and first-year Imani Whittington kept it a tie game at the break.

Columbia shot 50 percent (8-16) in the third quarter but was outscored 24-20 thanks to three triples and seven free throws from the River Hawks. Zimmerman picked up her fourth foul at the 7:11 mark and played just 27 minutes due to foul trouble. Lowell led by as many as five in the period, 48-43, after a Svenne 3-pointer at the 4:19 mark, but the Lions hung around to regain a one-point lead on another Lee triple. UML scored the final five points of the quarter to take a 58-54 advantage to the fourth.

UMass Lowell held Columbia to 31-percent shooting in the fourth quarter to pull away. A 7-0 run built the home team’s lead to nine with less than four minutes to go. Columbia put together one final push sparked by back-to-back triples by Lee and senior Paige Tippet, eventually tying the game on Sampleton’s bucket with 1:40 to go. Rudolph broke the tie on UMass Lowell’s next possession and the Lions went shot 0 for 5 with two turnovers in the final minute to fall by seven.

Lions Off to Best Start Since 2004-05 with Win over VermontTuesday, November 17, 2015

Vermont 56Columbia 73NEW YORK – The Columbia women’s basketball team (2-0) is off to its best start since the 2004-05 season after taking down Vermont, 73-56, in the home opener on Tuesday night.

The big win came after a career night by Camille Zimmerman, who posted up a career-high 31 points while matching a career-high 12 rebounds to put together her fourth double-double of her young career. The sophomore finished the game shooting 9-of-20 from the field with a career-best 5-of-6 from downtown.

The Lions were able to capitalize on early mistakes by Vermont in the opening minutes as the Catamounts picked up four team fouls within the first two and a half minutes of play, giving Columbia the chance to take a 6-2 lead to start off the game.

After back-to-back 3-pointers by the Catamounts to cut the Columbia lead to 13-12, Sara Mead was able to drain a pair of free throws before Devon Roeper hit a layup under the basket, beating the buzzer to give the Lions a 17-12 lead after the first quarter of action.

Vermont caught fire throughout the second quarter, however, going 4-for-9 from the field and 2-of-4 from downtown to tie the game twice, but the Lions would not give up their lead as they took a 30-29 advantage into the locker rooms at the half.

It was the Columbia offense who would come out of the break attacking as Camille Zimmerman posted up seven points over the first four minutes to spark an 11-2 run and give the Lions a 41-31 lead with 6:02 to go in the third.

While the Catamounts were able to pull within seven points on an Andreana Thomas 3-pointer, it was Tori Oliver who was able to hit a buzzer-beating layup at the end of the third quarter to give Columbia a 55-46 lead into the last 10 minutes of play.

Zimmerman’s dominance continued into the final quarter for the Lions as she opened things up with a huge basket through contact in the paint, forcing the foul to capitalize on the old-fashion 3-point play and put the Lions ahead, 58-46, in the first 30 seconds.

Still leading, 66-54, it was Zimmerman once again who stepped up to the plate, draining a deep three off an in-bound to beat the shot clock and put Columbia ahead by 15 before the Lions could seal a 73-56 victory.

As a team, Columbia finished the game with 18 points off 22 Vermont turnovers while shooting 38.5 percent from the field and 17-of-19 from the line.

Tori Oliver finished in double-figures once again for the Lions as well, posting up 19 points and eight boards after shooting 7-of-16 from the field and 5-of-6 from the line.

HEAD COACH • SECOND SEASON14-16 OVERALL, 3-11 IVY LEAGUECOLUMBIA '07CCCOLUMBIA HALL OF FAME CLASS OF 2016

Megan Griffith '07CC is in her second season as head coach of the Columbia women's basketball team. She was named head coach in March of 2016 after spending the past six years at Princeton University.

In her first year back at her alma mater, Griffith coached the Lions to their best non-conference season in program history. Columbia started the year 10-3 to post its highest non-conference winning percentage (.769). The historic start included a six-game winning streak and the program's first victory over a Big East opponent, downing Providence in overtime, 66-64, at Levien Gymnasium.

Columbia ended the 2016-17 campaign 13-14 overall and won three Ivy League games. Griffith's first Ivy League victory came in history fashion, defeating Dartmouth on the road in quadruple overtime, 91-88, on January 27. The game tied for the longest in Ivy League women's basketball history and was featured that evening on SportsCenter.

Griffith's first season also saw Camille Zimmerman break the program's all-time single-season scoring record, netting 608 points and averaging 22.5 points per game. Zimmerman was unanimously chosen First Team All-Ivy League after leading the Ancient Eight in seven statistical categories including scoring and rebounding (9.6). Zimmerman was also named All-Met Division I Women's College Basketball Player of the Year by the Met Basketball Writers Association, becoming the first Lion in program history to receive the award since its inception in 1996.

Griffith spent six seasons at Princeton, including the last four as an assistant coach and the team’s recruiting coordinator. She also served as the Tigers’ director of basketball operations from 2010-12. The last two years, Griffith has helped Princeton make back-to-back trips to the NCAA Tournament. During that span, the Tigers posted a 54-7 overall record, includ-ing an undefeated 30-0 regular season in 2014-15, and a 26-2 mark in Ivy League play.

In Griffith’s time with Princeton, the Tigers eclipsed 20 victories and reached the postseason each year, while securing five Ivy League titles. She has mentored 13 All-Ivy League players, including Blake Dietrick, who was the 2015 Ivy League Player of the Year and a WBCA Honorable Mention All-American, and 2013 Ivy League Defensive Player of the Year, Lauren Polansky.

Griffith captained the Lions for three seasons and was a two-time All-Ivy League selection (2006 and 2007). Griffith is one of nine Lions to score more than 1,000 points during her career, averaging 10.1

points per game. During her junior year, Griffth ranked 22nd in the nation in assists, averaging 5.5 per game, while chipping in 15.2 points per game. She was twice named Academic All-Ivy League and was a member of the Arthur Ashe Sports Scholar Team two straight years.

Following graduation, Griffith played three years of professional basketball in Europe. She joined FoA Nice Basketball in Forssa, Finland, during the 2007-08 season and was named the team’s MVP at the end of the season. In 2008-09, Griffith led the Espoo Basket Team to the National Finnish Championship and the Finnish Cup Championship titles. During the year she was also a youth basketball coach for Honka Basketball Club.

Griffith was also a member of the Celeritas-Donar Basketball team in Groningen, Netherlands. In addi-tion, she was named a U20 Dames 1 assistant coach and U18 Northern Selection Team assistant coach, while working as a youth coach and clinic director for Celeritas-Donar.

Griffith founded Back to Basics Basketball in 2008, an organization developed to teach basketball skills, while providing training and mentoring in her home-town of King of Prussia, Pennsylvania.

Griffith graduated from Columbia with a degree in economics in 2007.
