FREEDOM WEEK CELEBRATION

The Freedom week initiative was quite a success across grade levels. The novel idea of attempting to alter

our lifestyles to lead a healthier and more fruitful life was welcomed by both the student and teacher

community with open arms. The week saw a series of activities, discussions and research conducted in

this regard. The sheet that helped us calculate our carbon footprint was indeed an eye opener. The no

phones, no internet, no junk food days were welcomed with skepticism and excitement. Each one tried in

their own way to seek freedom in whatever possible manner from these highly addictive practices.

NO PHONE DAY

16th august was day 3 of the Freedom Week celebration which was aimed at celebrating Indian 70th year

of independence. So that day we were off mobile.

A busy day of school just finished and we were hooked with a new task. This time it was off mobile

phones for the entire day.

At first we found the task quiet challenging as generally we are stuck with phones as soon as we reach

our homes.

One benefit given to us was that we could use T.V and laptops. So it was a cake walk for us to not use our

phone the entire day. We didn't miss our phones that much.

Being honest we did use our phone some times to make essential calls.

It was a good initiative taken by the school trying to put up a stop unwanted use of phones.

No to Junk Food Last week we celebrated freedom week. On 17 of August the school took an initiative to give us an

opportunity to stay away from junk food for a day. On that day we tried our best to avoid junk food.

Later that day we read and had a discussion about how junk food affects our body. It leads to depression,

slow physical growth and obesity. It also reduces the appetite of a person. It can lead to lowering of IQ

levels. It is pleasing to our tastes buds but harms our body in many ways. We also spoke of healthy eating

habits and the need to incorporate traditional dishes in our daily menu. Everyone tried their best to avoid

junk food that day. It was good staying away from junk food for a day.

Though it may not be able to completely avoid junk food, we now realise the need to adopt a healthy diet

in order to keep illness at bay.

FREEDOM WEEK CELEBRATION

No internet and T.V day

The freedom week was in celebration of India’s 70th Independence Day. It was the last day of the freedom week of the school Day 4, 18th August 2017. The job was one of the hardest which was staying away from internet and T.V. People throughout the day use internet unintentionally as their devices are always connected to the internet. This shows us how today’s world is dependent on these gadgets. The next task was to avoid T.V. We all know how T.V has become a necessity in today’s life, as no one can live without electricity. They just can’t avoid it. So as the previous day this day was also to avoid mobile, as one needs to use it for various reasons. Most of the people were not successful, but they tried. This shows us that people are so adictated to their gadgets, and also they need to be stopped, as electricity is scarce. JUNK FOOD – A HABIT YET UNHEALTHY REALITY

During the past week, our school has been embracing what it means to live an eco-friendly

and free lifestyle. This included a fact sheet regarding “Junk Foods”. In our day to day life,

we often ignore these small yet essential decisions in life. These are the decisions that

shape our present, future and the future of humanity. These are the foods that we

consume everyday like pizzas, pakodas and other packaged foods. We do not bat an eyelid

when purchasing and consuming them, consistently ignoring that these are simply empty

calories that we consume. They hold absolutely no nutritional value. We blindly ignore the

things that cause us to be disappointed in ourselves. For every bad grade, every illness and

every insecurity, we have a solution. We can avoid a lifetime’s worth of disappointment if

we simply eat smart and eat healthy. Junk foods can be consumed in moderation. It’s a life

of obesity and sadness we should be protected from, not a life of happiness we should be

robbed of!

Reflection on Cyber Rules

For Independence Day, the students initiated an activity, seeking freedom from technology. We had many objectives such as limiting the time we spend on the internet, television, social media etc. Years of research has proved that media is exposing children to negative impacts such as obesity, low grades (mostly lower than a C), and low self-esteem. Electronic aggression and bullying by the means of e-mail, has also been another side effect of excess use of media. Youths are extremely fascinated by electronic media and tend to use it for several hours a day. This is habit-forming and can lead to addiction in the future. Spending hours in front of the screen has resulted in irregular bedtime patterns and exposure to the screen at night can alter the functioning of the brain. Increasing number of preschool going children spend less time living reality, preferring the virtual world instead. This restricts creative thinking, play, face to face social interactions with friends and family. We as a school are trying to take a step towards reducing the use of technology, because as seen in the past years, we don’t want anybody from now on to be a victim of cybercrime, which is the misuse of the internet used to bully and hurt people’s sentiments. If they do use technology, up to a certain limit, we would be encouraging students to follow certain rules. These are: 1. Being careful about who we choose to talk to by staying informed and knowing about them in detail. We must avoid nasty strangers as they might cause harm to us by extracting information from us. 2. Setting your account to private so that your personal information is kept secret. Passwords must also be encrypted so that the accounts can’t be hacked into. 3. Avoiding opening messages from unknown people as they might contain viruses or be trying to sell you something. 4. Sharing your concerns with your parents preferably, if something is troubling you (such as abusive language, pictures or horrid clips) 5. Must be careful about what you post online on social media without being too revealing. It might be difficult to remove once posted 6. Don’t accept random offers that may look attractive but may just be another marketing scheme or gimmick. 7. Discuss with a guardian before sharing any personal details online. These tips can be very helpful towards the prevention of cybercrime that has been an increasing practice in the last few years. FREEDOM WEEK CELEBRATION

PERSONAL ECOLOGICAL FOOTPRINT

The activity is related to the impact that an individual has on the environment. Also, this was constructed

by filling up a form of a survey. There were various topics which had few statics. There were questions like

how much water we used every day, what type of food we eat, how we travel to different places, the

energy use, the type of cloths we wear, the disposal of garbage and use of electricity. Each question had

an environment related outcome seen. For example, the question about water showed the amount of

water wastage for various purposes. All these topics had points. One example in this topic is 200 points

for those who eat only vegetarian food. There were even negative scores in few topics. In the end we

were asked to find an average upon the scores to come at a conclusion of how much of the earth and the

acre do you cover. The main purpose of this activity was to show the amount of things we use in our day

to day lives and the amount of wastage we do. This is data was used to know about the potential wastage

for example if someone doesn’t wear a particular set of clothes then he/she can donate the clothes. We

could also set back on some of the water usage for example not keeping the tap on while brushing, this

small action could surely help the environment and the future generations. This survey might act as an

eye opener for curtain people and find an alternative to their usual habits. Through our survey and

calculations, the average of the few students from our class has been concluded to be approximately 7.6

such earths required for our entire population to exist. These results show how energy is used in such a

huge amount. Through this activity we have learnt that people like us living in industrialized or developed

countries are a relatively small percentage of the world’s total popu­lation, but they consume a huge

share of the total energy produced in the world. We also realised the need of saving energy and our

natural resources. If we do not take any action soon then all the natural resources will be exhausted in a

few hundred years and sustaining life will become impossible. We humans have to play an important role

in taking the effort to save energy for the safety of our present as well as future.

REFLECTION ON AN EXCELLENT PERFORMANCE

At this year’s Cascade25 interschool event at Jamnabai Narsee a group of students from Grade 5 and 6

participated in the ‘One for all’ choir competition. The theme was ‘Equality’ and as expected a lot of

participating schools selected songs such as “We are the world” and “Imagine” as well as “Wavin’ Flag”

and “Black or White”. Students of our school sung “Do you hear the people sing?” from the musical “Les

Misérables”, telling of the struggle of the French people against the Monarchy during the time of the

revolution. The standard of performances was very high and the young students of RBK must have

doubted their chances of ending up in the top five when they listened to various choirs delivering

excellent harmonies pitched confidently. Kyati, Aanya, Seher, Mrunmayee, Aaira, Aadhyaa, Durva,

Smera, Yashas and Advait of Grade 5 and Srushti, Britnee, Tania, Vaniishaa, Drishya and Saunskar of

Grade 6 performed at their very best, conveying the expressive character of the music with great effect.

Here are few of their thoughts after their performance, which won them an outstanding 2nd place of 23

participating ensembles.

GRADE 3- FIELD TRIP TO BUTTERFLY PARK

The students of Grade 3 A had a field trip planned for the 17th of August. Where to? To the Butterfly Park, Airoli, to further inquire into their current unit of Natural Habitats. At the park, the students immersed themselves in the world of butterflies. At the beginning of the visit, they were given a brief orientation. The trained butterfly guides helped us to spot the different species and also helped us to locate the eggs, pupa, and caterpillar of the butterflies without disturbing their life cycles. The children were happy to see all the growth stages of a butterfly. They were excited to see a variety of butterflies living in their natural environment, which is a rare sight in the busy city of Mumbai. This also helped them to understand how the impact of humans on different habitats is destroying the natural habitats of the various species of plants and animals.

This field trip will now further help them to understand their role and responsibility towards the living things in the environment.

PYP 4TH GRADE

The children from Grade 4 had a very busy fun filled week. The week began with the celebration of Independence Day, spiced up with a surprise quiz in the library. Then, on Wednesday, all the 4th graders visited the library again, this time to learn some new things about Fiction and Non Fiction from Mr. Sachin Sawant, our PYP librarian. Now they were ready for next day’s activity, when they wrote some fiction and nonfiction pieces to read to their classmates. The results were beyond expectations, really nice, original pieces!

The week ended as it began, with fun learning activities. The students of 4A played Bingo with words and meanings, a game that, according to their reflections, helped them understand better the meanings and use of some “important” words related to our current unit of inquiry, Government Systems. Later, and to continue with the same topic, they went to the auditorium for a group activity in which they exercised the different skills associated to teamwork: listening, questioning, persuading, respecting, helping, sharing, and participating. With this team task they finally wrapped up the concept behind rights and responsibilities. They concluded that for every right there is a corresponding responsibility that is its complement.

It was certainly a very busy but gratifying week!

PYP GRADE 1 -FEELINGS MATTER

Show and tell is a key part of a child's learning development, as it helps them to express their feelings,

information and builds their confidence. Through our UOI ‘Myself’ children begin developing their social

and emotional skills, which influence their mental health and wellbeing, now and in the future. Children

brought from home for a Show and Tell one object that helps them express an emotion. They talked

about the feelings they have and those that you see in others by using easy words they can understand.

They learnt to identify and express emotions in a positive and healthy way and also built a strong

foundation for success later in life.

MYP FIRST HUMANITIES SUMMATIVE ASSESSMENT

This was our first summative and I had a lot of fun preparing for it and presenting it. It was all about the five themes of geography and Mr Rajesh had made groups of five or six and each of us would have to choose one of the five themes of geography. Then, we would have to either make a chart or booklet or a PPT or present it. My teammates were Ziya, Britnee, Dhruvil, Mahek and Shreya and I was the group leader. We named ourselves the “Brain Twisters”, our group name was in sync with our objective of twisting the brains of people and load them with a lot of information about Human Environmental-Interaction, which was our topic. I believe we achieved our objective and our presentation, chart and booklet provided the audience with considerable information, which was supported by pictures, write ups and a lovely song on environment. The preparation was smooth and fulfilling. For presenting we had divided the work, where Ziya and I made the PPT and presented, Britnee, Dhruvil and Shreya made and decorated the chart and booklet and then presented the same. We worked collectively to collect the information and pictures from the internet and books. We also had an idea of doing a small little play which was for about two minutes but we dropped the idea as we did not have enough time. On the day of the presentation, we were a bit nervous yet excited and we watched the other groups’ presentations discussions. We had practiced everything before presenting and we had great fun listening to other groups; they were very enthusiastic and so were we! All of us were satisfied with our work and the results of our hard work could be evidenced from the feedback received from Mr Rajesh. Through, this whole exercise, we had a lot of learning and sharing of information and hope to have more such exercises during learning! -TANIA SALASKAR Grade 6

Let the large fixed circle have radius r, which is constant, and the two smaller ones have

radii x and y respectively, where x and y can vary.

Now AB =r−x and AC =r−y.

Therefore perimeter of triangle ABC = AB + BC + CA

= (r−x) + (x+y) + (r−y)

=2r which is constant.
