WORK OF REV. R. S. HARRIS, FOUNDER OF THE DAY. "Children's Day" Inaugurated In New Jersey In 1866 by a Methodist and Soon Spread Among All Denominations. One of the most widely observed occasions of church celebration is Children's day, which falls in the season of the year when the flowers in the full glory of their bloom give freshness and perfume to the pretty custom that in a little more than 30 years has developed from a sweet, simple service established by a lowly pastor of a village church through his intense, natural love of children, into an important feature of church policy in all the states. The founder of Children's day was Rev. Robert S. Harris, a Methodist Episcopal clergyman, and the first observance of the day, under the direction of the founder, was at the Methodist Episcopal church, a very small frame structure, at Merchantville, N. J., in 1866. This humble place of worship in which Children's day had its initial celebration has since been replaced by a modern stone edifice. Rev. Robert Harris was devoted to children in an exceptionally ardent degree, and his great love for the little ones about him was the natural outgrowth of the tender, sympathetic disposition with which nature had espe- cially and peculiarly endowed him. He entered into the lives and plans of children, shaping their sunny hours and adding the glow of his cheerful disposition to their days as well as being always ready to comfort them in either real or imagined sorrow. The children were at once responsive and loved the kindly minister dearly, and with them he was a general favorite. . . . , who was more delighted with the bestowal of a child's affection than by gifts of material value. A child's kiss was coin that paid him well for his labors and interest in its behalf. Recognizing the church and Sunday school as the nursery of the morals of the future men and women of the land, he was long impressed with the idea which he had since felt to be an inspiration that the church, not only the Methodist Episcopal church, but all Christian churches, should set apart a day which should be especially given over to children and which they should know as and call their own, and for which exercises should be prepared and in which the children should participate. . . . and intensify their interest in all services of church and Sunday school. Proposing his plan to the teachers of his Sunday school and outlining his idea of what the day should be in the character of its observance, they heartily co-operated with the pastor. The entire services of the day sermons, songs and exercises were for the children, who, together with their parents, greatly enjoyed the day. Other churches soon followed the beautiful custom, and it grew steadily until now it has become one of the fixed festivals of the church. Mr. Harris, the founder, was born in Philadelphia in 1816 and died at Camden, N. J., March 22, 1898. In early life he was a designer by profession, and after entering the ministry in 1846 he brought his talents as an artist into use by blackboard exercises and chalk talks for the young. His remains repose at Mount Vernon cemetery, Philadelphia, where, as the minutes of the New Jersey Methodist Episcopal conference, of which he was a member, records it of his death, "His mortal body awaits its glorious resurrec- tion." When the flowers bloom and Children's day comes again, it is not to be marveled at that groups of children seek the grave of the deceased founder of their day and gently strew it with fragrant blossoms. Join us on Sunday, June 12th 150th Anniversary of Children’s Day
In Trinity’s sanctuary at 10 a.m. followed by a picnic.
“Don’t give up something for Lent, Do something for
Lent!” That’s what our church youth project was all about.
East Pennsauken and Pennsauken United Methodist
churches combined resources to help clean, organize and
inventory the food pantry, playroom and storage areas at
Providence House. Providence House was grateful for the
volunteers from both churches. As pictured, the volunteers
from East Penn were: Zach DiPietro, Rev. Jere Hopkins-
Doerr, Debbie Santarpio Melody Damerjian, Dominique,
Robert and Michael Damerjian, and Marline and Brandon
Diaz. From Pennsauken, they were Rev. Walt Mander,
Pam Tucker, Marilynn Bouvier, Austin Bouvier, Angie
Cutler, Dale Taylor and Rachel McCauley. The youth gave
up their day off from school to help some else. As a recipi-
ent of a Laity Leadership Academy Seed grant, the East
Penn and Pennsauken UMC churches were able to put ac-
tion to work, instead of just words. Future projects are al-
ready in the planning stages. Small ministries get big re-
sults! The group enjoyed the day and is looking forward to
future cooperative efforts.

Providence House Shower
The Methodist Youth Fellowship Group will end this season with a party to benefit Providence House on June 5th at 4:00pm. The youth of Pennsauken and East Penn UMC adopted Providence House as their mission project this year.
Providence House Domestic Violence Services provides emergency shelter, a 24-hour hotline, coun-seling services, a comprehensive children’s program, a parenting support group and senior abuse programs.
Please help them make their project a success by making a donation.
