1. CityNot always meant for the city, the work of OBRA Architects is always urban. The ideal city could be described as a minimum of well-defined space created for a maximum of ill-defined activity. A definition that can be applied across all boundaries of scale since a house can have the formal complexity and the functional potential of a city and a city can have the intimacy of scale and the character of proportion of a house. Architecture and urban design are the same thing done in different size.

2. FunctionGood architecture can be said to provide a maximum of spatial definition and a minimum of functional determination, the richness of future potential depends on

it. The negative mental exercise necessary to subtract form in order to add potential for unknown activity hasn’t been a popular position in our time of digital-mediated ease, perhaps because simplicity takes a lot of work, less is a chore.

3. FormNothing evades the representational inevitability of form, consciously or not, “Architettura” is always “Parlante.” Through technological invention, Architecture can contribute to the solution of the practical problems of life, preeminent amongst them today the environmental health of the planet, but at those less tractable such as death, ennui, hate, authoritarianism, etc. it gloriously fails through

form’s representational potential. As Cedric Price famously quipped: “Technology is the answer, but what was the question?”

To a large extent the mysterious fascination of Architecture resides in the negative value of that silence-generating failure. A quality reminiscent of the achievement described by Karl Kraus with these words: “. . . the strange thing is that the natives all understand each other, obviously they succeed because each one of them knows what the other won’t say.”
