The STAR program continues to expand both in size and scope. Twenty-five states partici pated in the program in 2016, an increase of seven over 2015. The STAR program exists to assist states in developing sustainable and effective recruitment and retention plans based on historical data, real-time trends, and individual state needs. STAR activities included Teach Ag workshops, state-based websites, internshi p programs, student-teacher scholarshi ps, state program tours, teacher professional development support, ambassador programs, teacher recognition, campus ag ed events, mentoring programs and parent-based programs, to name a few.

State Teach Ag Results (STAR Program)

“The STAR Program has had a dramatic effect on the teacher recruitment process in the state of Oregon. Because of the STAR Program, we have a consistent message to prospective teachers concerning agricultural education. The deliberate message is being delivered by all related organizations involved in high school-based agricultural education. The STAR Program gives us the grounding to stay on the same page. Several university students pursuing agricultural education as a career cite the activities and events of the STAR Program as the reason they are going to be future agriculture teachers.” - Mr. Reynold Gardner, Ed. Specialist, Agriculture & Natural Resource Systems, Oregon

The program is expected to grow to 30 states in 2017, with each state receiving at least $8,000 in financial support to implement timely and evidence-based strategies designed for maximum impact. The STAR program state retention rate remains at 100% for the third year in a row.

“For the first time in many years, students in Louisiana are really being asked to consider agricultural education as a career. The STAR program in Louisiana has allowed us to not only reach more students, but it has changed the culture of how students think about agricultural education as a career within the state.” - Dr. Kristin S. Stair, Assistant Professor, Louisiana State University

“Nebraska has made significant strides in addressing our teacher supply issue, due in large part to the National Teach Ag Campaign’s STAR program. Based on the plan we initiated three years ago, we expect to see a 2.5 times increase in graduates from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln next academic year. This class represents the first group of high school seniors who heard the Teach Ag message when we began the STAR program. There is still much work to do to meet the current demand, but Nebraska is in a much stronger position now compared to when we started our Teach Ag efforts.” - Mr. Matt Kreifels, State Director of Agricultural Education, Nebraska

Testimonials: How has the National Teach Ag Campaign made a difference?

“Being able to partici pate in the FAST Symposiums and National Teach Ambassador program have really helped to shape me as a future agriculture teacher. I have learned so much about the ag education profession and can’t wait to see what the future holds.”

“My favorite thing about the Teach Ag ambassador program is that 12 pre-service teachers from across the nation come together and create a bond that will last a lifetime. I know that I have colleagues and resources across the country that I can depend on as I pursue my career in ag education.”

“At the FAST symposium at the NAAE Convention, I had the opportunity to connect with other preservice students and share common experiences. I feel more prepared with resources, activities, and teaching methods. I will use these tools to teach and reflect on my student teaching. The biggest gain from this symposium was hearing from real teachers. Their testimonies and advice gave me assurance in my ability to teach and gave me insight on what a high school classroom really looks like. I would definitely recommend this experience to those who are student teaching or are about to student teach.”

“The National Teach Ag Campaign has opened many doors for me. As an ambassador, I have been able to make connections with so many current and future agriculture teachers. I have learned that there are so many opportunities available to ag teachers, beyond the walls of the classroom and the borders of my community and state. I can’t wait to see where ag education takes me in the future.”

“The FAST program was very beneficial to my future career. It was a great opportunity to network with people from around the nation who care about agriculture and care about children. This is a fansatic symposium for ag education students and a great place to learn teaching techniques and resources for first year teachers. I highly recommend this opportunity to anyone who loves agriculture and cares about the future of our nation.”

“The FAST Program was able to open our minds to new

teaching methods and allowed us to get to know several other people who are on the same journey. This was my first experience

at a conference and it was a great and informative experience. I am so thankful that I

was given the opportunity to talk with teachers from all over and see what they are doing

in their classrooms.” - 2016 FAST Partici pant

“The FAST symposium allowed me to see the views of other future teachers. This allowed me to think in different ways to better reach

my future students.” - 2016 FAST Partici pant

“If you want to engage with the best professionals in the industry and absorb more knowledge than one can handle in a weeks time, apply for the FAST symposium. It’s a wonderful

time and you’re immersed in opportunities for growth that will ultimately translate to

improving student lives.” - 2016 FAST Partici pant

“I loved being included as a part of the agricultural education profession! Being able

to network with current agriculture teachers and build rapport with them was a great

opportunity. Additionally, I felt this was a really great introductory program into NAAE and the

profession.” - 2016 FAST Partici pant

Parent Resources GuideIs your child interested in pursuing a degree in agricultural education? Do you have questions about his/her future career choice? This informational guide will help answer the questions you may have about ag education.

Supply & DemandCurrently, there is a national shortage of agriculture teachers. Each year, hundreds of positions go unfilled, so the demand for quality and diverse agriculture teachers is extremely high in many states.Causes for the shortage are teachers retiring, new positions opening, and graduates accepting positions outside of the classroom.

Ag Ed Quick Facts• Average Salary of Ag Teachers in Illinois: $51,211• Average Number of Extended Contract Days: 20• Number of Ag Teachers in Illinois: 391• Number of Ag Programs in Illinois: 321

Last year, more than 80 Agricultural Education

teachers were needed to fill open positions.

Ag Ed in Illinois• Illinois State University• Southern Illinois University• University of Illinois• Western Illinois University

Addressing the Shortage: • ELITE Conference for 125 high school students

interested in teaching agriculture.• GAST Internships to give students authentic

teaching experiences while still in high school and post-secondary school.

• TeachAg Luncheon at the Illinois FFA Convention to unite those with a common career goal.

• SB2975 identifies Agricultural Education as a high-need area and addresses the potential for extending contracts for agriculture instructors.

• Business Partnerships to assist through loan forgiveness for ag ed students.

• PreService Teacher Ag Education Bus Trip to visit top programs in Illinois.

EVERY GENERATIONNEEDS ITS LEADERS.As a farmer-owned cooperative, we help lead the agricultural industry by promoting the most innovative, responsible farming practices available today. And we want to make sure that the next generation of leaders is well trained for tomorrow. That’s why we proudly support youth leadership programs like FFA. It’s also why we’ve invested in scholarships and countless land-grant university initiatives across the country. At CHS, we know every generation needs its leaders. And every potential leader needs a little help becoming one.
