This annual event is run by the Royal Agricultural Society of NSW (RAS), a not-for-profit organisation that promotes and rewards agricultural excellence.

First held in 1823, the Sydney Royal Easter Show is Australia’s largest annual ticketed event, attracting over 850,000 attendees on average. Revenue generated by it allows the RAS to invest in agricultural programs, competitions, education, youth and rural NSW. In all, the RAS invests almost $7 million annually in these activities which are designed to promote agricultural excellence and keep our rural communities strong.

The Show is a celebration of Australian culture, from our rural traditions to our modern day lifestyles, providing unique experiences for everyone. Every Easter, the country and city join together at Sydney Showground, Sydney Olympic Park, for fourteen days of agricultural competitions, animal experiences, live entertainment, carnival fun, shopping and much more.

the accumulation of performance points from regional shows. There is pride the whole state can revel in when the best of the best compete in the city. It’s for that reason the RAS works closely with country shows to share knowledge about event management, competition administration and bio-security messaging.

Engaging young people in the industry is a challenge the RAS embraces. In consultation with government, key industry stakeholders, and educators they work to ensure programs developed are relevant to today’s youth, igniting a passion for agriculture.

While the Sydney Royal Easter Show is its cardinal event, the RAS has established a diverse portfolio, including world-class Sydney Showground which generates a total economic impact of $615 million towards the NSW economy.

Another aspect of the RAS portfolio is the Australasian Animal Registry - the most comprehensive not-for-profit animal registration and recovery service in Australasia.

Excitement is in the air at Sydney Showground for what is shaping up to be an amazing Sydney Royal Easter Show. Once again the country will come to the city in a celebration of our world-class agriculture industry. Of all the events the Royal Agricultural Society of NSW (RAS) holds through the year, this is the pinnacle of what they strive toward as laid out in their mission, which is, ‘to promote, foster and encourage the sustainable development of agriculture of the state’.

The Sydney Royal Competitions held during the Sydney Royal Easter Show attract over 30,000 Australia-wide entries each year. Exhibitors enter their product, animal or skill in an attempt to win the prestige of a Sydney Royal award. The Sydney Royal Wine, Dairy, Fine Food, Chocolate and Beer & Cider Shows are held throughout the year rewarding excellence in Australian produce.

Country agricultural shows have an important role to play when it comes to produce, art and craft. Some Sydney Royal competitions are only possible with

MEDIA RELEASES The daily media release will be distributed to media and posted on the Show website early each morning. The release includes daily highlights and any photo opportunities.

HIGH-RES IMAGES The Media Centre maintains a library of Show images. A selection of images will be available for media to download via a link provided by the Easter Show Team. Contact the Media Centre for access. Show photos are provided for publication purposes free of charge, providing the Royal Agricultural Society of NSW (RAS) is credited. Commercial use of our photos is not permitted unless prior arrangement and a fee structure have been negotiated.

WH&S All media representatives attending Sydney Showground must adhere to the RAS Workplace Health and Safety policy and laws relating to WH&S.

MEDIA ACCESS TO VENUES All requests for access to Spotless Stadium must be directed through the Media Centre. All media on the stadium grounds must wear a white coat (provided by the Media Centre) and broad-brimmed hat (provided by the individual). Under no circumstances are media allowed to enter Spotless Stadium during a Grand Parade or the evening entertainment program.

All requests for access to the Schmidt Arena, Channel 9 Woodchop Stadium and The Amphitheatre must be directed to the Media Centre.

ACCESS FOR TV CREWS TV crews requiring onsite vehicle access for live-crosses and filming must advise the Media Centre, at least 2 hours in advance where possible, every time they wish to enter Sydney Showground. TV crews arriving at the Showground unannounced will not be admitted by Security. Crew cars and link trucks ONLY will be provided with on-site parking.

MEDIA PARKING A limited number of media parking spaces are available daily in P1. Contact the Media Centre for more information or to have your parking validated. Parking is available on a first-in basis.

MEDIA ACCESS TO THE SHOW Pre-approved accredited media personnel must go to the Exhibitor Services Centre (ESC) on their first visit to the Show to collect their Show media accreditation. The ESC is on Murray Rose Avenue, opposite Sydney Olympic Park Station in the RAS Administration Building. On arrival at the ESC, media personnel must present official media identification or a business card in order to receive Show media accreditation. Show media accreditation must be visible at all times while on site at Sydney Showground.

The Royal Agricultural Society of NSW operates a hub for all accredited media personnel reporting on the Show. The Media Centre is located at:

AROUND SYDNEY SHOWGROUND Please be considerate of competition judging and pay careful attention to animals and exhibitors when filming, photographing or conducting interviews.

TRANSPORTThe Show is held at Sydney Showground, situated within Sydney Olympic Park, and is conveniently serviced by trains and buses. All ShowLink tickets include same-day return public transport and with plenty of extra services running, it’s the best way to get you to the Show and home again.

IMPORTANT INFORMATIONShowLink tickets won’t be available to be purchased at Sydney Trains and NSW Trainlink stations or on Sydney Olympic Park Major Event Buses.

Shuttle buses will run between the northern bus terminal (plaza show entry) and the P5 car park and between the Dawn Fraser bus terminal and the P3 and P4 car park. All Showgoers travel for free, service operates from 9am - 11pm. Taxis are available on Herb Elliot Ave (near Australia Ave) until 5pm and then on Murray Rose Ave (near carnival entry) from 5pm – 11pm.

PATS APLENTYStroll along the Animal Walk and you will find the Farmyard Nursery, an open-plan indoor paddock with over 800 free-range animals just waiting for a friendly pat. Here you’ll see playful ducklings on their waterslide, fawns, piglets, geese, donkeys and more.Where Farmyard Nursery

SUPER-SPEEDY SHEARINGWatch champion shearers show off their sensational skills every day at the Show. As they present a new line-up of performing sheep for your delight, you’ll laugh at tales of life on the land and the goings-on in the shearing sheds. WATCH WILDLIFE WING-ITFeel inspired as you watch the magical rapport between handlers as their feathered friends soar freely around The Amphitheatre. Through this enchanting performance you’ll meet some of Australia’s most beautiful bird species including the endangered Red-tailed Black Cockatoo and an owl which you can hold and fly. Watch as tropical parrots screech above your head. But look out for the oldest and most intelligent Cockatoo in the team - he will demonstrate how he can pick fruit from trees, put rubbish in the bin and… take money from wallets! CHICKS WITH ATTITUDESee some of the country’s most pampered poultry during their daily beauty routine. Watch as the birds are lathered, fluffed and blow-dried. All while an experienced commentator talks you through the demonstration which is, quite literally, all for show! CLOWN AROUNDLearn tricks from the best in the business at the Ashton Entertainment Circus Workshops. With over 160 years of knowledge gleaned from the big-top, circus performers will teach you how to walk a mini-wire, juggle, and plate spin at these fun workshops for the whole family.Where The Daily Telegraph Paddock

SEE LADY GALAH-GA LIVE! The Flora Kulchas are a bunch of characters who, together with special guests like Elf-ish Presley and Lady Galah-ga, bring floral design and horticulture alive in an engaging edu-tainment stage show. This beautiful cast of Australian native flowers also host hands-on workshops where kids aged 5-12 years can create a cupcake inspired arrangement, a terrarium or a floral crown. SPRUCE PRODUCEThe District Exhibit competition is a hot contest between five regions across NSW and South East Queensland. Each region displays their produce along with their creativity in enormous artworks crafted using more than 50,000 pieces of fresh fruit, vegetables, grains, pulses, wool and other produce. The exhibits are the end result of a year of hard work by passionate agriculturalists, farmers and volunteers, who plan, source, collect, design and install the spectacular constructions for pre-Show judging. As you can imagine, the sale is met with enthusiasm from woolgrowers, brokers and buyers alike, all eager to showcase the industry to the public. AUSTRALIAN CITIZENSHIP CEREMONYAt the 2016 Show, 194 conferees will take a pledge and oath to receive Australian Citizenship in an event that will create memories for a lifetime. To celebrate, the ceremony will open with Aussie-flavoured entertainment, followed by a traditional Welcome to Country involving all the children in the audience. ALPA YOUNG AUCTIONEERS COMPETITIONBe there as the hammers go down as the Sydney Royal Easter Show hosts the Australian Livestock & Property Agents (ALPA) NSW State, and the Australian National Young Auctioneers Finals. The sale of livestock through auction is a rural tradition. Regional competitions have been created to encourage and develop emerging talent in this field. To determine who has the gift of the gavel, finalists will auction prize-winning Sydney Royal Steer Show stock to high-profile buyers while aiming to get the best price possible for vendors. HORSE COMPETITIONThe Sydney Royal Horse Show is the largest of its kind attracting over 6,000 entries, exhibiting Australia’s most prestigious horses from every corner of the country. For sheer entertainment alone, you

have to see the Pumpkin Snatch. This Heavy Horse class involves a team of two people. One drives the horse and the other (usually a child) hangs onto the side and must get on and off to collect pumpkins from pedestals in one direction and then put them back on in the other. As you can imagine, this event is lots of fun for competitors and spectators alike. SHEEPThe Sydney Royal Sheep Show consists of Fleece, Merino, and Meat & Dual Purpose Breeds Competitions. Over 800 sheep will battle it out for this year’s top ovine prize.

The term Meat & Dual Purpose Sheep is a collective for 13 breeds of sheep exhibited at the Show. One of which is making a comeback after a 15 year absence - the Wiltshire Horn Sheep. Another is the Corriedale, a 2016 feature breed.

A fascinating part of the Merino competition is the Objective Measurement Class. The Corriedale is an incredible sheep breed. Not only does it produce excellent wool which is well suited to everyday interior textiles like futons and doonas, it also has high-quality meat characteristics, especially for prime lamb.
