The Iowa trauma system recognizes the unique needs of the mixed rural and urban population in the state. To assure all persons across the state have access to an organized delivery system for trauma care, Iowa’s trauma system is designed to be an “all inclusive” system involving all out-of-hospital and hospital providers. All sectors of the emergency medical service system are involved as participants. This concept serves to provide timely and appropriate care for all injured persons throughout the state.

The goal of a trauma care system is to match needs of time-critically injured patients to existing resources so that optimal and cost-effective care is achieved. This requires cooperation of trauma care providers and resources throughout the state along each phase of trauma care. A systems approach recognizes this continuum of care and has been shown to reduce overall costs, disability, and death associated with traumatic injury. To accelerate the progress in reducing injuries, the three injury control components of prevention, acute care, and rehabilitation must work together.

Introduction

The Iowa Department of Public Health, Bureau of Emergency and Trauma Services (BETS) has made this directory available listing trauma care facilities in Iowa. Included within this directory is information on hospitals that have been certified as trauma care facilities. All hospitals/trauma care facilities are included in the directory. Please find on pages four through six an alphabetical listing of all hospitals in the state that identify successful completion of the categorization and verification process to participate in Iowa’s trauma system as a certified trauma care facility. Every effort has been made to ensure that the information in this directory is accurate; however, changes and corrections are inevitable. It is the responsibility of the trauma care facility to submit changes and or corrections to the department by E-mail. The most current listing of the directory is available at http://idph.iowa.gov/BETS/Trauma Definitions

Categorization: A preliminary determination by the department that a hospital or emergency care facility is capable of providing trauma care at Level I, II, III or IV care capabilities. Certificate of verification: A document awarded by the department that identifies a hospital or emergency care facility’s level and term of verification as a trauma care facility. Hospital: A facility licensed under Iowa Code chapter 135B, or comparable emergency care facility located and licensed in another state. Trauma care facility: A hospital or emergency care facility which provides trauma care and has been verified by the department as having Level I, II, III or IV care capabilities and has been issued a certificate of verification pursuant to Iowa Code section 147A.23, subsection 2, paragraph “c.” Verification: A process by which the department certifies a hospital or emergency care facility’s capacity to provide trauma care in accordance with criteria established for Level I, II, III, and IV trauma care facilities and these rules.
