Dear Friends of Science & Arts Academy,

I am delighted to welcome you to Into the Blue, SAA’s annual gala. This promises to be a wonderful evening where the entire SAA community—faculty, staff, board, parents, alumni and friends—gathers to celebrate our school.

Tonight, we come together to show support for our school through enthusiastic participation in the auctions and the Fund -a-Project. Unified in our commitment to gifted education, your involvement in this special event is critical to help ensure that SAA students are provided the best educational experience possible.

Putting on an event of this magnitude requires an outstanding team of dedicated parent volunteers and staff members. What you experience tonight is the result of months of planning, and I am grateful to everyone who has played a part in making Into the Blue extraordinary.

Into the Blue is truly a school community endeavor, with so many people donating items and unique experiences. Our Circle of Blue group was instrumental in reaching out to their contacts on SAA’s behalf, resulting in a host of one -of- a- kind opportunities for auction. I extend special thanks to each of our donors, sponsors, and advertisers for their generous support of Science & Arts Academy.

On behalf of the students, faculty, and staff of Science & Arts Academy, I thank you for being part of Into the Blue. Here’s to a wonderful evening!

Honoree

Brooke Whitted

Devoted husband, loving father, SAA parent, special education advocate, and trusted attorney, Brooke Whitted enriched the lives of many, including the Science & Arts Academy community. Brooke served as SAA’s primary attorney from 2006 until his death in 2014. He also shared his insight and expertise on SAA’s head search advisory committee in 2012-2013. Brooke was one of the most caring individuals we have ever known.

Upon graduation from Oklahoma State University, Brooke worked as a Cook County Juvenile Probation Officer for eleven years. He came to realize that many children on his case load were there because schools were not recognizing or meeting their needs. He went to John Marshall Law School and joined the first wave of attorneys to implement new special education legislation. Brooke’s law firm, Whitted, Takiff + Hansen LLC, is proud to continue his work on behalf of children and the professionals, schools, and programs that serve them.

11

Notable achievements in Brooke’s life include his service as Board President of the Leslie Shankman School Corporation which operates the Sonia Shankman Orthogenic School and the Hyde Park Day Schools, of which he was co-founder. He was co-founder and chair of the Harold and Rosemarie Marx Memorial Fund which has helped over 40,000 Cook County Juvenile Court wards. He also served on boards such as the National Runaway Switchboard, Glenview Youth Services, Heartspring Inc., and Shelter, Inc. For over 20 years, he taught “Law and Psychiatry” to Child and Adolescent Psychiatry fellows at the UIC Medical School. Brooke was appointed to the Illinois Community & Residential Services Authority, a state agency that helps children receive services for the most complex and challenging needs. Additionally, Brooke was appointed to the State Board of Education’s “Anti-Bullying/Harassment Task Force" and the legislature’s “Task Force on Prevention of Sexual Abuse of Children.”

From wife Linda: Brooke treasured good schools and knew how rare they are. He delighted in SAA’s excellence and deeply appreciated their loving commitment to each and every child. Our own children, Ross and Layne, attended for their middle school years and are living the benefits every day. Ross is committed to helping children. Layne, I think, may save the world. SAA unlocked the hidden potential and passion in their hearts and minds. That’s priceless. SAA is one of the best things we ever gave to the children, and I know that Brooke joins in my sincere and heartfelt thanks.

The Science & Arts Academy is honored to award Brooke the first annual Blue Horizon Award.

Priceless Experiences

#1 - Escape Challenge with Mr. Costello

Gather your group of 8 to join Mr. Costello and a mystery guest, Mr(s). X on a journey of a lifetime straight out of your favorite adventure or mystery novel. This is your one chance to feel like the star of a heart-pounding action movie.

Escaping from school will be the beginning. First, chaperoned by Mr. Costello and Mr(s). X, you will use Uber to the Cumberland CTA station. Then your group will travel together via train to and from the event. Nothing like a ride on the Blue Line to set the stage for a railway-related escapade!

When you arrive at the Escape Artistry location, the excitement will swing into high gear. "Locked" in a railcar, you will pool your ideas and work together in a scenario created by Escape Artistry to provide drama and excitement without being frightening. The premise is simple: in a story-driven puzzle, your group will have 60 minutes to work together, find the clues, solve the riddle, get the key, and stop the train to save yourselves from certain disaster.

After the city of Chicago is saved, you will have the special privilege of a private Q&A session with the creators of The Railcar scenario. If you’ve ever wished you could ask the author questions about an exciting plot twist, this will be that kind of moment.

We all know how excitement and incredible feats of brilliant deduction can make a student hungry, so afterwards your party will trek to Big Star for a lunch of gourmet tacos, amazing guacamole and other nourishing food.

As you travel back to SAA, recount tales of yourbrilliant deductions, celebrate your braveryand cunning or laugh and enjoy yoursuccess. By the time you arrive home, you will be legends.

Donors: Escape Artistry, Big Star, The Keyt Family, The Libel Family, Tim Costello

Restrictions: Must be completed before theend of the school year. Mutually agreed datewith Mr. Costello. Recommended for grades 1 & up.

#2 - Creative Director for a Day at The Land of Nod

If you are the type of student that has daydreamed about running your own company or designing products that can be sold worldwide, this is your once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to learn all this and more as Creative-Director-for-a-Day at The Land Of Nod, a nationwide retailer specializing in quirky and imaginative children’s furniture, bedding & accessories.

First, start off on the right foot. To be a top executive you need to look the part. Thankfully you can use your generous gift card for a shopping spree at Nordstrom. With your fashionable business attire planned, you’ll then head to the Land of Nod headquarters in Morton Grove to start your adventure.

The keystone of your experience will be a chance to interview the company’s Managing Director, Michelle Kohanzo. Learn what she does day-to-day and how she works with different departments in the company to design and develop beautiful and practical kid’s products while touring the Corporate Office.

Now let’s get creative. Work on product designs with the Design Manager then explore the ‘samples’ area to figure out what goes into making decisions on what to sell. Next up, try your hand as an Art Director. You’ll check out the photo studio where the company’s own in-house photographer takes pictures of the products displayed on the website.

Lastly, see what it takes to keep all those customers happy as you listen in on some actual calls from their customers in their customer service department.

At the fun continues after you head home. Use your new knowledge and skills redecorate your bedroom with an extremely generous gift card to shop at the Land of Nod.

Donors: Land of Nod, FSA, The Brun Family

Restrictions: Suggested age for experience: 8-12 years old. Includes $200 Nordstrom gift card and $500 in Land of Nod gift cards. Arrangements will be made directly with contact at Land of Nod HQ.

#3 - James (or Jane) Bond Experience for 2

It may be all in a day’s work for James Bond, but your party of two will have the thrill of a lifetime as you attempt to shoot down an enemy plane, drive a fancy sports car at outrageously high speeds, and engage in martial arts with a professional fighter. Recruit a friend or relative to join the fun, or be inspired to ask your spouse to join you à la Mr. and Mrs. Smith or True Lies.

Enemy bogies spotted at 9 o’clock! Have the ultimate Top Gun moment as you each fly a real, vintage fighter in multiple "g-pulling" dogfights. Your instructor will handle takeoff and landing but once the enemy is spotted, you will take the controls, maneuver into position, lock on and fire. Which one of you will emerge victorious? Your flight will be recorded on video and sent home with you as the ultimate souvenir.

No thriller would be complete without a car chase in a high performance vehicle, so head to the private Autobahn Motorsports Club in Joliet to learn high speed driving skills from a professional instructor from Team Stradale. This outing includes classroom instruction, significant hot-lapping, use of vehicle, and safety equipment as well as breakfast and lunch.

21

No matter how fast he drives, James Bond occasionally comes face-to-face with a villain. Practice your hand-to-hand combat with a one hour private karate/self defense lesson with Adam Brozer, an 11-time national Karate champion. The bad guys won’t stand a chance!

With the enemy plot thwarted, you can relax. Bond would never entertain without looking fantastic, so share your $500 Trunk Club gift certificate to elevate your look before hosting your group of 8 people at Chicago’s Untitled Supper Club for a tasting experience in their whiskey library. Styled after the bygone era of the speakeasy, the art deco decor and live music lounge is the perfect venue to relive the glory of your exploits.

Donors: Air Combat USA, The Dudney Family, Trunk Club, Untitled Restaurant & Lounge, North Shore Dojo

Details and Restrictions: Flying participants must weigh less than 250 pounds and be no taller than 6' 6". Available only during specific dates at various locations. Flying experience in Chicago availability is June 24 - 26 & Sept. 16 - 18. Additional cities/dates available. Driving participants must be age 25+ and hold a valid driver’s license.

22

#4 - Chicago Super Fan Experience: Ultimate Chicago Sports Lovers' Package for 4

The following week on April 7th, head back to the United Center as the Blackhawks take on their rivals St. Louis in a neck to neck battle to win the western conference. Your four prime seats in Section 101, Row 9 right behind the Blackhawks bench will ensure a good view of all the action.

By June 4 the ivy will be a lovely green when your group of four heads to the Friendly Confines for a Saturday afternoon Cubs game against the Arizona Diamondbacks. Dress appropriately, as your second row dugout seats in Section 22 are so close that you’ll be on TV behind home plate every time the batter swings. For the Cubbies, currently a 4-1 favorite to win the World Series next year, this may be the magical season!

And fall wouldn’t be complete without football. Cheer the Bears to victory from the North End section of Soldier Field, section 250, Row 1, as they play against the Minnesota Vikings. Bear down!

24

#5 - Astronaut-In-Training for Three!

Start preparing for your career as an astronaut! As the lead astronaut on this training mission, you’ll have the opportunity to assemble your three-person crew. All systems go!

First, your group of three will venture with Mrs. Maliwanag to National Geographic's "Live! Extreme Planet" at the Goodman Theater. Learn about the extreme environments you might encounter and pick up tips about how to explore them safely.

Next, your science class heads out of this world when Mr. Bonecutter arranges for your three-person crew AND your entire science class to Skype with NASA's Planetary Protection Officer, Dr. Catherine Conley. Learn how to prevent any risk that your missions might bring Earth microbes potentially damaging to an unexplored planet.

Then, your original space crew of three will consider possible destinations for your journey as Mr. Linder takes you on a private viewing and tour of the telescope at Dearborn Observatory at Northwestern University. Take a peek behind the lens of a telescope and discuss the vast possibilities the universe offers.

25

Finally, visit Mission Control as your group of three heads south to the National Center for Super Computing Applications at the University of Illinois in Urbanna-Champaign. Witness Blue Waters, one of the most powerful supercomputers in the world which can translate numbers into images to "see" the kinetic energy of a supernova. Meet the astronomers who use this computer to learn about the universe by analyzing data collected from telescopes and instruments. Have lunch with the team who detected the first gravitational waves from a pair of orbiting black holes.

For each of your three-person crew, a framed space themed art print created by designers at NASA's Jet Propulsion Lab will be the ultimate reminder of these amazing experiences.

Donors: National Center for Supercomputing Applications, The Dudney Family, Mr. Linder, Mr. Bonecutter, The Horvath Family

Restrictions: Extreme Planet tickets are for April 5th at 7pm. Transportation is the responsibility of the winner. Arrangements must be made with Mr. Bonecutter and Mr. Linder individually for above experiences. A parent/chaperone must accompany students on trip to NCSA.

#6 - The Best of Seattle, Costello-Style

Your family of four will have a customized visit to Seattle, filled with exclusive private tours and experiences that range from the high tech world to the stunning beauty of mountain views and glacial lakes. See the city that Tim Costello and his family called home before joining the Science & Arts Academy community.

Upon your arrival use transportation provided by Shuttle Express to take you from the airport to your hotel. You will spend four nights in the heart of downtown at Kimpton's Hotel Monaco, recipient of Conde' Nast's 2015 Readers Choice awards.

Day 1: Incredibly, SAA has made arrangements for your group to spend the morning with private access to the Microsoft Studios & Xbox headquarters in beautiful Redmond, Washington, including a lab tour through the world-class Studios User Research facilities. Meet game designers and learn about their approach to developing blockbuster Xbox games such as Minecraft, Forza, Fable, Gears of War, Halo, and more as you visit areas unavailable to the general public.

Next, head a little further north with tickets to the Future of Flight Aviation Center & Boeing Tour. The center offers a once-in-a-lifetime chance to explore the only publicly available commercial jet assembly plant in North America.

If you are concerned about getting there, you will have the luxury of renting a car from Enterprise for any excursions out of the city center.

Day 2: Get back to nature with a custom experience designed by Frank Staller, a staff member at Wild Fish Conservancy. Visit a current research site or perhaps a private tour created for your interests and schedule.

27

Day 3: Spend the day with some good old-fashioned sightseeing at Seattle Center. Have a meal atop the Space Needle, admiring the view while enjoying the delicious meal. Spend time exploring the Pacific Science Center and redeem passes for Documentary IMAX®, Planetarium, or Laser Show. Add a little culture to your trip with four tickets to the Experience Music Project Museum. From Hello Kitty to Jimi Hendrix, to a vast collection of artifacts from iconic science fiction films and television shows, this museum is unique.

Day 4: Visit Pike Place Market, Seattle’s original farmers market. Grab coffee at the original Starbucks, browse for local crafts and stop by one of the fish markets to witness seafood being tossed through the air. Then redeem your gift card to Argosy Cruises for an excursion of your choice. Choose to explore the historic Seattle waterfront and enjoy the natural beauty of Elliott Bay, cruise Lake Washington and catch a glimpse of Bill Gates’ house, or sail through the locks on the Puget Sound.

Don’t forget to bring your curated Costello Family Guide to Seattle, complete with dining recommendations and more.

Beyond the main house, in the center of the estate, is the Junior Size Olympic pool and guest house. The guest house consists of two additional king en-suites, separated by a kitchenette. Air conditioned throughout.

29

The spacious nature of this property is only the beginning. If you tire of the beach, enjoy the pool, read a book on the large covered patio, or head inside to the media room. Wireless high speed internet and a Vonage phone line will let you stay connected with the world, if you must.

If you are looking for nearby activities, this area has lots to offer. Sample the nearby restaurants for lunch and browse the marketplace. For exercise, golf, tennis and yoga are easily arranged. If you’ve got something more exotic in mind, the property manager/concierge can guide you to water activities like jet skiing or parasailing, snorkeling, fishing or even swimming with dolphins. Or, explore the land with hiking, jungle tours or other eco-adventures.

Make it a trip to remember.

Restrictions: Villa can accommodate 14 adults or 18 including children. Trip must be booked within one year of gala date; travel must be completed within one year of booking. Not available on major holiday weeks (Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years, and Easter), and subject to available dates. Food, alcohol, beverages, spa services, and staff gratuity not included. $500 refundable security deposit required at time of booking. Airfare not included.

#9 - Your Personal Wine Cellar

The highest bidder on this one-of-a-kind package will be the proud owner of a collection of fine wines donated by SAA Board of Trustee members and SAA supporters. This huge collection will have you believing, as Robert Louis Stevenson put it, “Wine is bottled poetry.”

This wine collection will be familiar, surprising and astounding by turn. A Wine Spectator rating of 90 points is considered “outstanding,” and the majority of these wines surpass that mark. Many even appear on the Top 100 of 2015 list. Treat yourself to the chance to compare each great Cabernet, Merlot and Pinot Noir to the last. Or explore the Rioja and other Spanish reds. They are delicious now, but may become even more exciting with age.

Some of the bottles are particularly unique, including Mount Eden Vineyard's Chardonnay Santa Cruz Mountains 2012, rated one of Wine Spectator's top five wines of 2015. Other highlights include the highly collectible ‘97, ‘98, & ‘99 vertical of Marilyn Merlot vintages and a commemorative Napa Valley red from Freemark Abbey to celebrate Super Bowl 50.

Because few houses are equipped with a subterranean wine cave, you’ll wisely store your precious bottles in the 32 bottle stainless steel wine fridge. With an electronic touchpad for precise temperature control and soft interior lighting, it will cherish your collection.

Lastly, every fine wine has a story, including yours. Record every discovery of your wine journey in a supple leather bound wine journal you can refer to time and time again. As the Latin phrase exclaims, In Vino Veritas… In truth, there is wine!
