2016 GERIATRIC SCHOLAR CERTIFICATE PROGRAM

WHAT IS THE GERIATRIC SCHOLAR CERTIFICATE (GSC) PROGRAM?This five-day educational conference, held one day each week for five weeks, is offered at The Greater Binghamton Health Center, Binghamton, New York and provides professional training in interdisciplinary geriatrics & gerontology. The Geriatric Scholar Certificate Program is offered by the Columbia University’s Statewide Geriatric Psychiatry Residency/Fellowship Program and the Columbia-New York Geriatric Education Center of the Consortium of NY Geriatric Education Centers and the Research Foundation of SUNY – Center of Aging Research, Education and Services (CARES) Project, Upstate Medical University Clinical Campus at Binghamton. This program has no financial commercial support, nor has it received “services in kind” commercial support. GSC faculty members come from Columbia University affiliates in Canada, North Carolina, New York City and various local programs.

MISSION AND GOAL OF THE GERIATRIC SCHOLAR CERTIFICATE (GSC) PROGRAMThe mission of the GSC Program is to improve and expand geriatric health care particularly for minority, multi-ethnic, low-income older adults in medically underserved areas throughout New York State. The GSC Program provides interdisciplinary education focused on issues, treatments, and service delivery models in geriatrics. The GSC educational programs are targeted to a broad range of health care professionals – both those currently working in geriatrics and those interested in joining this growing specialty – who must be knowledgeable and up-to-date about the latest treatments for older adults. This program will address the medical and psychological issues related to the care of the elderly and strives to provide interdisciplinary education focused on issues, treatments, and service(s) delivery models in geriatrics.

INTENDED AUDIENCE The Geriatric Scholar Certificate Program is primarily intended for professionals who care for the elderly, including physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses, physician assistants, social workers, nursing home and other administrators, residential care/assisted living providers, clergy and other health care/human services personnel. Consumers and professionals from other disciplines may also find the program useful.

James Crosby, MDDr. James Crosby is a Family Physician Geriatrician currently serving as faculty in the Wilson Family Medicine Residency (United Health Services) in Johnson City, NY where he directs the residents’ geriatric and palliative care training and the Geriatric Fellowship. He is also emeritus Medical Director of UHS Senior Living Center at Ideal in Endicott, NY and is Clinical Associate Professor at Upstate Medical University, Binghamton Campus. He is board certified in Family Medicine and Geriatrics and has over 30 years experience teaching residents and students from a wide range of disciplines.

Neil Hall, MD, MBADr. Hall is a former Director of Geriatrics and the founding Director (Emeritus) of the CARES Program at Upstate Medical University Clinical Campus in Binghamton. He is a graduate of Upstate Medical University and the Family Practice Residency at United Health Services Hospitals in Johnson City, NY. He practiced rural primary care medicine for thirteen years before completing a fellowship in geriatrics at Buffalo and Syracuse. Dr. Hall is certified in Family Practice, Geriatrics, Hospice and Palliative Medicine. Dr. Hall’s major interest is to improve care for older persons through educating physicians and other health care providers. He is currently in private consulting practice in Raleigh, NC.

Annmarie Kinsella, MS, OTR/LAnnmarie is an Assistant Professor of Occupational Therapy at Utica College, she is currently working on her post-professional Doctor of Occupational Therapy Degree at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia Pennsylvania. She completed the Advanced Practice Certificate in Teaching in the Digital Age from Thomas Jefferson University. She earned her Master’s Degree at New School for Social Research in Utica, New York in Health Services Management and Bachelors Degree in Science and Occupational Therapy at Utica College of Syracuse University. Annmarie is a Registered Occupational Therapist with 23 years of clinical experience including school-based practice, sub-acute and acute rehabilitation and management. She has fulfilled many years as a fieldwork supervisor for occupational therapy and occupational therapy assistant students. She received certification from Sensory Integration International as a Certified Test Administrator of the Sensory Integration and Praxis Test (SIPT). Professor Kinsella has fulfilled the role of adjunct position in the children’s courses at Utica College since Fall of 2009 and accepted her current full time position in August of 2012.

Suk-Young Kang, MSSW, PhDSuk-Young Kang is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Social Work at Binghamton University. His areas of specialization and expertise include mental health and social work gerontology as it relates to the Asian immigrant older population and social justice. His research focuses on depression and family caregiver issues and social justice for immigrants and refugees. Dr. Kang worked in Chicago as a social worker and served as a program coordinator at the Korean American Senior Center. After receiving his Ph.D. at Columbia University in 2003, he was an Assistant Professor in Social Work at the University of Texas at Arlington (UTA) and at Arizona State University, where he conducted research on depression and health status among Chinese and Korean immigrant elders with support from the John A. Hartford Foundation and the Hogg Foundation. Dr. Kang’s current research on depression in elders is conducted in the Department of Social Work, College of Community and Public Affairs, Binghamton University.

Nella Khenkin, CSWMs. Khenkin is a certified social worker in hematology and oncology at Maimonides Medical Center and Brooklyn Hospital Home Care Health Services in Brooklyn, NY. She received her Master’s in Social Work from the Wurzweiler School of Social Work at Yeshiva University, New York City and advanced training in Human Services for Émigrés at the Institute for Child Mental Health in New York. Ms. Khenkin specializes in Cultural Issues and Aging, is fluent in English, Russian, Byelorussian, and Yiddish, and brings to her presentations a great wealth of cultural experience and humor.

Judith L. Howe, PhDDr. Howe is Professor in the Brookdale Department of Geriatrics and Palliative Medicine and in the Department of Preventive Medicine, Mount Sinai School of Medicine, Associate Director/Education and Evaluation at the James J. Peters VA, and Directors of the CNYGEC and the GRECC Inter-professional Palliative Care Fellowship Program. Dr. Howe has edited three books on aging and is the Editor-in-Chief of Gerontology and Geriatrics Education, the official journal of the Association of Gerontology in Higher Education (AGHE) and has been an elected member of the Executive Committee of (AGHE). She was  President of the State Society on Aging of New York in 2005 and a Board member and President of the National Association of Geriatric Education Centers/National Association for Geriatric Education. She is a Fellow of the New York Academy of Medicine, Association for Gerontology in Higher Education, and the Gerontological Society of America.

Aaron Mallace, MS, CSCS Aaron is an Assistant Professor of Health Studies at Utica College, was born in Utica, NY and raised in the Mohawk Valley. After receiving his Associates Degree in Athletic Training from HCCC in 2002 he transferred to Alfred University where he completed his Bachelor’s Degree in Athletic Training with a minor in Biology. He then went on to complete his Masters Degree in Exercise Physiology from Ithaca College in 2005. Shortly after graduation he also obtained the highly esteemed credential of Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) via the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA). Since 2005 Aaron has been working as a Clinical Exercise Physiologist, assisting hundreds of people towards achieving their health and wellness goals. In 2010 Aaron joined UC as an adjunct instructor in the Health Studies program and in 2012 Aaron was hired as an Assistant Professor. With him comes a tremendous amount of passion, energy and enthusiasm for academia. He currently resides in Herkimer, NY where he lives with his wife Megan.

Lucia McBee, CSW, MPH, CYIMs. McBee is a geriatric social worker and certified yoga teacher who has worked with elders and their caregivers for over 27 years. She received her Master’s in Social Work and Public Health from Columbia University. In addition, she has trained at the Center for Mindfulness, the Center for Mind-Body Medicine and Kripalu Institute. For the past 13 years she has integrated mindfulness and complementary therapies into her practice with elders with pain, cognitive and physical challenges; patients at the end of life; and their formal and informal caregivers primarily at the Jewish Home Lifecare System. Her work has been published in peer reviewed journals and presented at national and international conferences. Her book, Mindfulness-Based Elder Care, was published in April, 2008. Ms. McBee is currently a Freelance Author in New York, NY.

Lisa McMurray, MD, FRCPC Dr. McMurray is a geriatric psychiatrist practicing at the Royal Ottawa Mental Health Centre in Ottawa, Ontario. In addition to her work in geriatric psychiatry, she has an interest in electroconvulsive therapy and cognitive-behavioral psychotherapy. She completed the Statewide Geriatric Psychiatry Fellowship Program through Columbia University and the Stroud Center for the Study of Quality of Life in 2000, and then practiced on a psycho geriatric outreach team in rural Northern Ontario for three years. She then practiced at the Pierre Janet Hospital Centre from 2003 to 2012. Her training in general psychiatry was done at McGill University, after she graduated from the University of Toronto Faculty of Medicine. She is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, and has added Qualifications in Geriatric Psychiatry through the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. She is an assistant professor at McGill University and at the University of Ottawa.

Patricia Miller, EdD, OTR, FAOTADr. Miller is a Special Research Scientist/Scholar in the Programs of Occupational Therapy at the Columbia University Faculty of Medicine. She brings with her a strong background in rehabilitation of older adults and interdisciplinary geriatric health care. She was co-principal investigator of an interdisciplinary government-funded training grant for community practitioners in rehabilitation and health promotion.

Mark Nathanson, MDDr. Nathanson is Training Director, Geriatric Psychiatry Fellowship Program at the Columbia University Stroud Center and Department of Psychiatry and attending Psychiatrist at Elmhurst Hospital and NY Presbyterian Hospital. He is Interim Director of the Statewide Geriatric Psychiatry Residency/Fellowship Program at the Columbia University Stroud Center. Dr. Nathanson is well known for his work in community mental health and geriatric psychiatry and psychiatric emergency services and urban disasters.

Florin Olteanu, MDDr. Olteanu is the Medical Director of the Mid Coast Senior Health Center in Brunswick, Maine. He is board certified in geriatrics, having completed a geriatric fellowship at the University of Rochester Medical Center. John A. Toner, EdD, PhDDr. Toner is Associate Professor of Medical Psychology in the Department of Psychiatry and the Stroud Center of the Columbia University Faculty of Medicine and Senior Research Scientist at New York State Psychiatric Institute. He is also Director of Geriatric Residency and Fellowship Programs and Co-Director of the Geriatric Psychiatry Fellowship Program at the Stroud Center. Dr. Toner has published two books on long-term care of the frail elderly and over fifty scientific articles and abstracts in the fields of geriatrics/gerontology and qualityoflife.Hisstudiesfocusonthechronicallymentallyill elderly patient and the prevalence of depression among individuals with cognitive losses associated with dementia. His most recent book, Geriatric Mental Health Disaster and Emergency Preparedness, was published by Springer Publishing Company.

Stanley F. Wainapel, MD, MPHDr. Wainapel is Clinical Director of Rehabilitation Medicine at Montefiore Medical Center and Professor of Clinical Rehabilitation Medicine at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Bronx, NY. A physiatrist with more than 25 years of clinical experience, he is the author of more than 60 publications in the medical literature on geriatric rehabilitation, vision rehabilitation, alternative medicine, and physical disability among physicians. He has also lectured nationally on these subjects.

Davangere Devanand, MDDr. Devanand completed his psychiatry residency training at Yale University School of Medicine. He is Director of Geriatric Psychiatry within the Columbia University Department of Psychiatry and Professor of Clinical Psychiatry and Neurology at the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Columbia University, where he is Co-Director of the Memory Disorders Center and Co-Director of the Late Life Depression Clinic. He is the principal investigator on several research grants from the National Institute of Aging, the National Institute of Mental Health, the Alzheimer’s Association, and NARSAD. He has published over 151 research papers, book chapters and books on the topics of electroconvulsive therapy, geriatric depression and Alzheimer’s disease.

Youjung Lee, LMSW, PhDDr. Lee is an Assistant Professor at Binghamton University, Department of Social Work and an Associate Director of the Center for Family, School and Community Partnerships that is housed in the Institute for Intergenerational Studies at Binghamton University. She received her PhD in 2007 from the University of Texas at Austin and her research interests involve aging, positive aspects of family care giving, resilience of minority older adults, and grandparents raising grandchildren. Youjung researches needs of grandparents raising grandchildren and explores the effectiveness of mental health services for intergenerational families in school settings. Barnett Meyers, MDDr. Meyers is a Professor of Psychiatry at the Weill Medical College of Cornell University and Professor in the Program of Clinical Epidemiology and Health Services in the Graduate School of Medical Sciences of Cornell University. He has been the principal investigator of four studies of severe depression in later life funded by the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH). Dr. Meyers has published more than 175 journal articles and book chapters. He is a past-president of the American Association for Geriatric Psychiatry. His research has focused on the diagnosis and treatment of different variants of geriatric depression. He has presented at the Geriatric Scholar Certificate Program for several years.

Dr. Meyers is conducting a study funded by the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH). Medications for this NIMH study were donated by: Eli Lilly, Pharmaceuticals and National Institutes of Mental Health, Relationship – Co-Principal Investigator of Administrative Core and Principal Investigator of Medical Core and Pfizer Pharmaceutical Donates medication for NIMH study but no other involvement.

Victoria M. Rizzo, LCSW-R, PhDVictoria M. Rizzo, LCSW-R, Ph.D., Associate Professor and Chair at the Binghamton University Department of Social Work, is a J ohn A. Hartford Geriatric Social Work Faculty Scholar. Dr. Rizzo is also a licensed clinical social worker, who has extensive practice experience as a healthcare social worker in a physical rehabilitation setting. Her practice specializations include stroke, spinal cord injury, arthritis, and sexuality issues for chronically ill and disabled older individuals. She also directs the Jewish Association for Services for the Aged Research Institute. She has used this experience to develop and implement health services research studies that examine the efficacy and efficiency of social work interventions in aging withqualityoflifeandcostparameters.Aswellasexamininghealth care services use by aging individuals with chronic illness and disability, Dr. Rizzo is also committed to building community capacity for the provision of evidence based interventions for chronic diseases, such as arthritis, diabetes and hypertension.

At end of ramp, merge into LEFT lane. Turn LEFT onto Robinson St. Continue on Robinson St. (about 1.5 miles) to the Greater Binghamton Health Center.
