ABOUT APIC

With more than 15,000 members, the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and

Epidemiology (APIC) is the leading professional association for infection preventionists (IPs). APIC’s

mission is to create a safer world through the prevention of infection. APIC advances its mission

through patient safety, implementation science, competencies and certification, advocacy, and data

standardization.

ABOUT THE ACADEMY

One of the ways that APIC advances the infection prevention profession is through its educational

programs, one of the largest of which is the Infection Prevention Academy. Offered twice a year, the

Academy offers learners a variety of course choices for all levels on the APIC competency model. It

also provides them with the opportunity to interact with hundreds of other infection preventionists;

view products and services offered by a large number of exhibitors; participate in focus groups; and,

Education for the Prevention of Infection (EPI®) 101

This novice-level course introduces the various roles and responsibilities of the infection preventionist and presents content that maps to the first two stages of the APIC Novice Roadmap. Areas of emphasis include: how to prepare surveillance and risk assessment plans, regulatory compliance, preventing transmission of infectious diseases, and how to handle employee exposures.

Education for the Prevention of Infection (EPI®) 102

This novice-level course builds on the concepts and principles introduced in EPI 101® and maps to the third and fourth stages of the APIC Novice Roadmap. Topics include: the infection preventionist’s role in construction and renovation; instrument cleaning, disinfection, and sterilization; and managing the infection prevention program.

Infection Prevention for Ambulatory Surgery Centers 101

This novice-level course provides healthcare professionals working in ambulatory surgery settings with tools to develop and maintain an effective infection prevention program that both protects patients and complies with accrediting and regulatory requirements, such as the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) conditions for coverage. The class promotes evidence-based practices that can be used to reduce the risk of infection and provide a safer environment for patients. Attendees from all ambulatory surgery settings are encouraged to attend.

Infection Prevention for Ambulatory Surgery Centers 102

Sustaining and Improving the Infection Surveillance, Prevention, and Control Program

This novice-level course builds on the concepts and principles introduced in ASC 101; introduces new topics, such as product review and observational surveillance; and helps learners develop critical thinking skills they can apply to improve their infection surveillance, prevention, and control program.

Advanced Education for the Infection Preventionist

This proficient and expert-level course is designed to improve IP competencies in key areas essential to lead an effective infection prevention program within today’s complex healthcare environment. By refining leadership, financial management, process improvement, and consensus-building skills, IPs will better be able to align infection prevention efforts across patient safety, quality, and risk management.

DAY 1: Budgeting and Finance

Day 1 focuses on helping infection preventionists navigate through a variety of business challenges in order to make the case for investments in reducing infections. Micro-cases are used to illustrate the concepts.

DAY 2: Construction and Renovation

Day 2 will provide insights into all phases of construction and renovation projects. Infection preventions will then be better prepared to offer knowledgeable input and guidance into those projects, and develop a comprehensive Infection Control Program.

DAY 3: Negotiation and Conflict Resolution

Day 3 offers tactics and strategies to successfully manage conflicts and negotiate budgeting, staffing, and process implementation.

About the Academy CoursesThe Infection Prevention Academy houses APIC’s signature training courses, Education for the Prevention of Infection Prevention (EPI®) and Infection Prevention for Ambulatory Surgery Centers (ASC), as well as a new course, Advanced Education for the Infection Preventionist.

Offered twice a year, once in the spring and once in the fall, the Academy provides learners a variety of course choices that map to all levels on the APIC competency model. Attendees have a unique opportunity to listen to expert speakers, learn with hundreds of other infection preventionists, view relevant products, and relax with a community of colleagues.
