BUCKNELL BISON ATHLETICSSETTING THE STANDARD OF EXCELLENCE

Bucknell takes great pride in its commitment to excellence on and off the playing fi elds. From Presidents’ Cups to Academic All-Americans to gradua-tion rates that are ranked annually in the national top-10, Bucknell is clearly at the head of the class when it comes to upholding the scholar-athlete ideal.

• According to federal data released by the NCAA each fall, Bucknell’s student-athlete graduation rate annually ranks in the top 10 among all Division I institutions. Bucknell has led the nation in graduation rates three times and ranked second in the most recent survey in the fall of 2014.

• All 27 Bison varsity teams easily met the NCAA’s Academic Performance Rate (APR) standards once again last year. In fact, 19 programs boast perfect scores in the four-year rolling average. Bucknell received 19 NCAA Academic Progress Rate (APR) National Recognition Awards, the second-highest total among all Division I institutions.

• Bucknell has claimed a league-high 139 Patriot League Scholar-Ath-letes of the Year since the league’s inception as an all-sports conference in 1990-91.

• A total of 441 Bison appeared on the Patriot League Academic Hon-or Roll in 2014-15 after recording a GPA of 3.2 or better during their sport’s competition season. Among all BU student-athletes, 312 made the Dean’s List with GPAs of 3.5 or better during the spring 2015 se-mester.

• In addition to the 128 Capital One Academic All-Americans produced since 1970, Bucknell has also claimed 346 Academic All-District honor-ees over the same span, including fi ve in 2014-15.

• Bucknell has earned 101 Patriot League championships in 25 years in the league. In addition, Bucknell has had 129 conference players of the year, 110 PL coaches of the year and a whopping 605 individual league champions from sports such as cross country, track & fi eld, swimming & diving, tennis and golf.

• 26 of Bucknell’s 27 varsity squads posted team GPAs of 3.0 or better in the spring of 2015.

• Bucknell has captured the Patriot League Presidents’ Cup, signifying the league’s all-sports champion, 18 times in the 25-year history of the affi liation, including 14 of the last 18 years.

• Bucknell ranks FIFTH in the nation (to Nebraska, Notre Dame, Penn State and Stanford) in total number of Capital One Academic All-Amer-ica selections with 128.

• A major element in ensuring Bucknell’s commitment to athletics excel-lence is the Kenneth G. Langone Athletics & Recreation Center, which opened fully in 2003. One of the fi nest collegiate athletics facilities of its kind, the center includes the 4,000-seat Sojka Pavilion, the Olym-pic class Kinney Natatorium, the Krebs Family Fitness Center and the Berger Family Weight Room. A Hall of Fame area, a display of Bucknell’s Medal of Honor recipients, an Academic All-America wall, a sports med-icine suite, modern offi ces for coaches and staff , and locker room and classroom space are also included in the facility’s layout.

BUCKNELL BISON ATHLETICSA NATIONAL MODEL IN PROMOTING THE SCHOLAR-ATHLETE IDEAL

Bucknell Athletics is fi rst and foremost a student-centered organization, one that strives to be a national leader when it comes to operating by a true scholar-athlete model. At Bucknell, student-athletes’ academic programs are their fi rst priority, and providing a competitive Division I athletics program only advances the mission, values and residential learning goals of the university. To that end, the Department of Athletics and Recreation proactively seeks ways to assist student-athletes in their daily academic pursuits. Below are just some of the student-athlete support programs currently in place.

BUCKNELL BISON LEADERSHIP ACADEMY: In 2011-12, the Department of Athletics launched the Bucknell Bison Leadership Academy. This program is designed to help student-athletes learn how to be eff ective leaders on and off the playing fi elds. The Leadership Academy features programming and instruction that bridge theory, development and real experiences in an interactive learning environment. Through this endeavor, team leaders can enhance their impact on their teammates’ and their program’s performance immediately and for years to come.

FACULTY ATHLETICS REPRESENTATIVE: The faculty athletics representative (FAR) is a member of the faculty or administrative staff who is designated to represent Buck-nell in its relationships with the NCAA and the Patriot League. Bucknell’s FAR is Mitch Chernin, Professor of Biology. The FAR can enhance the student-athlete experience by promoting a balance between academics, athletics and the social lives of student-athletes, which aff ords them opportunities to enjoy a full range of collegiate experiences.

SIDELINE COACH PROGRAM: This program is a truly unique initiative in Division I college athletics, and it involves the invitation of a member of the faculty, administration, staff or community by one of Bucknell’s 27 varsity teams. The participant has the opportunity to discuss the overall program with the respective coaching staff , including practice preparation and strategy for the upcoming contest. The sideline coach attends a practice session and an actual intercollegiate competition, where he/she is intro-duced to the team and gains rarely seen insight into the relationships that exist between player-coach and player-player. The purpose of the Sideline Coaches Program is to foster a better understanding by the faculty and administration of the roles played by coaches and athletes in the university’s competitive intercollegiate athletic arena.

ACADEMIC ENHANCEMENT CENTER: In the Fall of 2005, the Department of Athletics opened a study/computer lab for student-athletes on the concourse level of Sojka Pavilion. The center is outfi tted with computers, a laser printer, four television monitors and a projection unit with computer, VCR and DVD player. Additionally, the study lab can be used as a meeting place for group projects, tutorial area or just a secluded and quiet study space before or after practice. In addition, the Department of Athletics owns a number of laptop computers that may be signed out by student-athletes for use on away trips.

STUDENT-ATHLETE ADVISORY COMMITTEE (SAAC): Representatives from each varsity team comprise the SAAC, which is designed to enhance the total student-athlete experience by promoting opportunity, protecting student-athlete welfare, and fostering a positive student-athlete image. The Committee is an invaluable resource for pro-moting communication between athletics administration and student-athletes; promoting communication between athletics and campus-wide administration; providing feedback and insight, as well as soliciting responses into department issues and proposed NCAA legislation; building a sense of community within the athletics program involving all athletics teams; organizing community service projects and eff orts; creating a vehicle for student-athlete representation on campus-wide committees; serving as a collective voice of campus student-athletes; and disseminating information to the student-athlete body. Among the programs the Bucknell SAAC has undertaken in recent years are regular volunteer trips to the Lewisburg Food Bank, and involvement with the “Orange and Blue goes Green” sustainability program.

BISON GOOD SPORTS: Now in its ninth year, Bison Good Sports is a sportsmanship awareness program designed to promote appropriate fan conduct at all Bison sporting events. Bucknell teams have some of the best fan support in the Patriot League, and we encourage all fans to enthusiastically cheer on the Orange & Blue in a positive manner.

Roster/Quick Facts

2016 Bucknell Baseball 5www.BucknellBison.com

In 2015, Bucknell posted a 16-10 non-con-ference record against a formidable schedule, was a strong 11-7 at Depew Field, had an ERA more than a run lower than its opponents, outhit and outscored its foes, and was one of just two Patriot League teams to fi nish above .500. The Bison will attempt to build upon those accomplishments in 2016 and return to the Patriot League Tournament for the third time in the last four years.

Fourth-year head coach Scott Heather, the 2014 Patriot League Coach of the Year, expects Bucknell to make a postseason appearance and be in the mix at the top of the always com-petitive Patriot League.

"We want to compete for a Patriot League title," noted the 12-year member of the Bison coaching staff . "We will play a tough non-con-ference schedule that will challenge us. We want to get better each week and be playing our best ball when Patriot League play rolls around. Maybe we peaked a little early last year.

"I thought we played well out of confer-ence, but didn't play as well once league play started and lost some close games. Being the returning champion, we were the hunted and got everybody's best. We can certainly learn from that."

There are 17 members of the 2016 Bison who were part of the team that captured the Patriot League regular-season and tourna-ment titles two years ago, and they will pro-vide plenty of leadership for the younger classes.

"It helps that those guys have tasted the success and know what it is like to have that experience," said Heather, who was a Bison as-sistant for eight years before taking over the top spot in 2013. "They are motivated to get back to the postseason. We had a productive fall and one of the best off seasons since I have been here. We have seen a lot of improve-ment."

Bucknell has an experienced group in its lineup and in the fi eld. All eight of the players expected to start in the fi eld on opening day are members of the junior or senior classes. Those eight players combined to start 236

games last year, and they have 527 career starts between them.

"We have a veteran off ensive group," com-mented Heather. "Our lineup should have a little more punch and depth this year. Hope-fully the defense will be as good as we were two years ago. We will play a lot of veterans and we feel good about their improvements over the years."

Overall, Bucknell has 26 letterwinners back from last year's team.

STARTING PITCHING: For the fi rst time since 2012, Bucknell has to replace two mem-bers of its weekend starting rotation as the Bison lost standouts Xavier Hammond and Bryson Hough to graduation. Hough was a four-year weekend starter, while Hammond was a jack-of-all-trades lefty who spent two years as a regular member of the rotation, but also pitched out of the bullpen in many key situations

While those two veterans will be missed, there is still plenty of talent remaining, head-lined by senior team co-captain Andrew An-dreychik. The 2013 Patriot League Rookie of the Year enters his fourth year as a conference starter, and this year he will move from pitch-ing game one on Sunday to pitching the fi rst game of each series.

"Andrew's role has expanded each year, and each year he has stepped up to the challenge," praised Heather, who was the team's pitching coach during his days as an assistant to Gene Depew. "He has always had great command, and this year he has added a little bit more ve-locity. He is a consistent pitcher who will give us a chance to win each time no matter who we are facing."

Andreychik enters the season tied for Buck-nell's all-time shutout record with fi ve during his career. His control has been impeccable throughout his tenure as a Bison, walking just 2.24 hitters per nine innings of work, the sixth-best ratio in program history.

A native of nearby Danville, Andreychik is 13-13 in his career with a 3.41 ERA, which ranks ninth in school annals. He has allowed just 167 hits in 169.0 career innings and oppo-

nents are hitting just .259 off him.Last year, Andreychik was 4-5 with a 2.44

ERA to rank fourth in the Patriot League. He tied his career high with four complete games and was twice named Patriot League Pitcher of the Week.

The other returning member of the start-ing rotation is junior lefty Mike Castellani. After opening the season in the bullpen, he joined the rotation beginning with the second Patriot League series of the year. He was 1-1 with a 4.78 ERA as a starter.

"Mike has been so valuable to us out of the bullpen during his career, but he is working on building his pitch count now," said Heather. "He needs to add that third pitch. He does a good job with his fastball and throws a couple diff erent types, but adding the full arsenal is key."

Castellani has an impressive 7-1 record in his career with a stellar 2.61 ERA. He has al-lowed 76 hits and struck out 48 in 86.1 career innings.

Sophomore Connor Van Hoose is one of the leading candidates to scoop up one of the remaining two spots in the rotation. The Alxandria, Virginia, native logged 6.2 innings in fi ve relief appearances as a rookie, but im-pressed Heather and pitching coach Jason Neitz during the off season.

"Connor had a great fall and has the po-tential to be a front-line pitcher in the Patriot League in the years to come," praised Heather. "He needs to go out there and prove it now. Connor will work to solidify his spot during the pre-conference portion of the schedule."

Two seniors (Dan Keller, Max Kra) and two freshmen (Jeff Gottesman, Jack Grabek) are also in contention to be weekend starters.

Keller, who along with fellow seniors An-dreychik, Joe Ogren and Tommy Pennington, is a team captain, earned three mid-week starts last year in his fi rst campaign back from missing a season due to injury. He struck out 15 and yielded just 16 hits in 19.0 innings of work over seven appearances.

Kra missed the early part of 2015 with an injury, but fi nished with 15.1 innings in nine relief appearances, fi ve of which were against

lineup on a consistent basis."There are a number of players also in mix at

fi rst base, including catchers Fritz and Kluger-man. Sam Clark, who has played third base most of his career, could play some fi rst, as could freshman Miles Moore.

Mayer could also play fi rst base at times to give him a bit of a rest and still keep his potent bat in the lineup.

SECOND BASE: For the third straight year, Joe Ogren is expected to be a key player on the right side of the infi eld. The senior two-time All-Patriot League selection is entering his fourth year as a starter, having started in right fi eld as a freshman in 2013.

The team co-captain was one of three Bi-son to start all 46 games last spring and he hit a team-best .357 to rank third in the Patriot League. He also ranked in the top 10 in the conference in eight other key off ensive statis-tical categories, including second in both slug-ging and on-base percentage.

"Joe Ogren is one of the best hitters I have coached in my time at Bucknell," mentioned Heather. "He has continued to improve. He was unanimously voted captain this year and has shown leadership on a daily basis. We can always count on him to be ready to play each game. He is a clutch performer, too. We like to see him at bat with the game on the line."

Sophomore Luke Johnson, who has the ability to play second, shortstop and third, will be Ogren's primary backup, while gradu-ate student Alex O'Neill and freshman Bruce Keenan will provide depth.

"Luke has proven he can play all three in-fi eld spots and probably had the best fall of all our infi elders," said Heather. "Alex provides us with some experience. He has good defensive mobility and always fi nds a way to get a clutch hit for us. Bruce can play both middle infi eld spots. He makes all the plays. He will be in a backup role, but is a consistent player we can count on."

SHORTSTOP: Moving from third base to his more natural shortstop position is junior Mark Powell. He was the team's primary start-er at third last year, but with the graduation of

Patriot League opponents. Kra has had varied roles over the course of

his career. He was the team's closer as a fresh-man in 2013, made four mid-week starts in 2014, and pitched exclusively out of the bull-pen last spring.

"Both Dan and Max are primed for big se-nior years," predicted Heather. "They will have major roles on our staff .

"All seven of the guys are good options to start. We should have good depth on the staff . Now we need to develop roles for each guy and see who rises to the top."

Heather also noted that freshmen P.J. Strahm and Christian Tailor could develop and become mid-week starters as the year pro-gresses.

RELIEF PITCHING: Bucknell has a versatile and talented bullpen that is strong at the end of games. At the back end of the bullpen is a pair of pitchers who had sub-1.00 ERAs last year in junior lefty Danny Raff erty and sopho-more righty Mike Stephens.

Raff erty, who will also be the team's start-ing left fi elder once again, will serve as closer. He is coming off a season in which he averaged nearly two strikeouts per inning and allowed just one earned run in seven appearances.

"Danny is good at getting himself ready to pitch, even when he is playing the fi eld," com-mented Heather about his two-way star. "We just have to plan ahead when going to him."

Stephens was nearly as unhittable as Raf-ferty as the two combined to allow just 14 hits in 29.1 innings. His 0.53 ERA was best on the team as he fi lled both the setup and closer role as a rookie.

One thing that makes Heather excited heading into the year is the ability for the bullpen to match up with opponent lineups. Senior Austin Zimmerman and Stephens both throw from a low angle on the right side, while junior Jack Schoenberger does the same from the left side. Heather also thinks Grabek can be tough on lefties out of the bullpen.

Freshman Hunter Robichaux and junior Tommy Gambon are the relievers with the best "stuff ", according to Heather. Gambon

has logged 9.1 innings of work his fi rst two seasons and has nine career strikeouts.

Heather is also confi dent in the abilities of Nolan Brennan, a sophomore lefty who allowed one run over fi ve appearances last spring.

CATCHER: A First Team All-Patriot League catcher in 2014, senior Jon Mayer returns for what promises to be a strong fi nal campaign in Orange and Blue. The Dillsburg, Pennsylva-nia, native is a durable backstop who has four home runs and 57 RBIs in his career while con-tinuing to improve behind the plate.

"Jon has been a major contributor the last two years and will need to produce in the middle of our lineup," noted Heather. "Hope-fully we can fi nd a way to spell him behind the plate and give him more rest. We are look-ing for more power from him this year and he showed the ability in the fall.

"Jon has been through the battles behind the plate and does a nice job. He has plus arm strength and is probably our guy with the most professional prospects. He is going to play hard and bring energy and toughness to our team."

Sophomore Aaron Fritz saw action in 12 games last year with seven starts and he will continue to serve in a reserve role. Heather predicted Fritz will work his way into the line-up on a regular basis partly due to his bat. He hit .280 in limited at bats last spring.

Left-handed hitting freshman Evan Kluger-man could also see time at catcher, while also possessing the ability to play fi rst base.

FIRST BASE: Multiple-year starter Rob Krentzman graduated last year and that has opened a starting spot for senior Spencer Stokes. Heather has tried to get Stokes into the lineup the last few years, but was unable to fi nd an opening.

A versatile player, Stokes hit .333 last year while earning starts at fi rst base, left fi eld and designated hitter.

"Spencer had a great fall and is primed and ready," said Heather. "He has settled in nicely at fi rst base. It will be nice to keep his bat in the

two-year shortstop starter Greg Wasikowski, Powell is now penciled in at short.

Powell hit .263 with one home run and 15 RBIs a year ago.

"Mark had a strong fall and has had two strong summers playing short," noted Heather. "We are looking forward to him being at short-stop on a consistent basis and reaching his full potential."

Johnson will be in the mix at shortstop along with Powell, and Keenan will both back up at shortstop as well as second base.

THIRD BASE: Junior Sam Clark won the third base spot as a rookie in 2014, but battled some injuries last year and appeared in just 20 games. The left-handed hitter still hit a strong .317 against right-handed pitching while play-ing mainly at designated hitter.

Clark is the frontrunner to play third base this season. Heather wants to make sure his bat stays in the lineup.

"Sam is a guy we missed once league play rolled around," mentioned Heather. "He is a big RBI guy and not having him hurt us."

Johnson and sophomore Keifer Rawlings will add depth behind Clark. Klugerman can also play third, in addition to catcher and fi rst base.

"We have some guys on the infi eld who can play diff erent positions, and are interchange-able" explained Heather. "We have a lot of left- and right-handed bats, so we can match up where necessary."

OUTFIELD: Two-thirds of Bucknell's start-ing outfi eld remains the same as last year with Raff erty penciled in left fi eld and junior Brett Smith slated to start in center fi eld. Se-nior Tommy Pennington is expected to fi ll an enhanced role as the starting right fi elder af-ter serving mainly as a reserve his fi rst three seasons.

Raff erty, who has driven in 26 runs over his fi rst two campaigns, is a powerful left-handed hitter who will also serve as the team's closer on the mound.

"Danny is going to be a major part of our off ense," commented Heather. "He had a nice

Danny RaffertyDanny Rafferty

fall and is a great outfi elder defensively."Smith is a two-year starter in center. He

joined the Bison in 2014 and has started all but one game since and has batted leadoff in vir-tually every contest. He enters the 2016 cam-paign with a streak of 90 consecutive starts.

A Second Team All-Patriot League selection and the Patriot League Rookie of the Year in 2014, Smith saw his average dip a bit last year, but Heather looks for Smith t0o return to the nearly .300 hitter he saw two years ago.

"Brett actually hit the ball harder as a sophomore than as a freshman, but he got out more," noted Heather. "He has continued to get stronger, so hopefully more of those go through. He is fi nding the holes again, has great speed and gives us a great chance to score when he gets on base."

Pennington, a team captain, fi nally gets his opportunity to be a member of the starting lineup on a regular basis. He has played in 54 games with 22 starts over the last three years.

"Tommy had a great fall and has solidifi ed himself in right fi eld," said Heather. "He will be a big part of what we do and he helps give us a very good defensive outfi eld."

Sophomore Chuckie Scales, who was the team's primary pinch runner last year, will back up in both left fi eld and center fi eld, while junior Alex Salem and freshman Miles Moore could also see some time in left behind Raff erty.

Freshman Jared Drizin and sophomore Mike Korchak will be in the mix in right fi eld along with Pennington. Heather noted that Drizin might be the newcomer with the most potential to contribute in 2016, while Korchak has been working on his defense after mainly pitching and playing at designated hitter a year ago. Korchak has a valuable bat as he hit .290 with one home run and six RBIs in 69 at bats as a rookie.

Korchak will be the frontrunner for the DH position, although Clark, Fritz and Johnson are sure to work their way into the lineup there as well.

Scott Heather was named the head coach of the Bucknell baseball program on June 18, 2012, succeeding the retiring Gene Depew. Heather spent the previous eight years as an assistant coach at Buck-nell, helping the Bison to a pair of Patriot League Tournament titles and NCAA ap-pearances.

It took Heather, the 2014 Patriot League Coach of the Year, just two seasons as head coach to lead the Bison through a successful postseason run. Under Heath-

er's tutelage, Bucknell won the Patriot League regular season and Patriot League Tournament titles in 2014. The Bison advanced to the NCAA Regional at Virginia and posted the second NCAA win in program history, defeating Liberty 5-2 behind a complete game four-hitter from pitcher Dan Weigel.

In his three years as head coach, Heather has guided the Bison to a pair of 20-win campaigns and 71 victories overall. Over the last two years Bucknell is a Patriot League-best 55-43-1 (.561) and is the only conference team with back-to-back winning records.

A former pitcher at the University of Arkansas, Heather served as the pitching coach during the fi rst eight years of his tenure at Bucknell. The staff had a 4.30 ERA in 2006, marking the team’s lowest since 1983 (4.10). The strong pitching has continued with last year's 3.44 team ERA ranking second in the Patriot League and 73rd nationally.

During his tenure as pitching coach, Heather tutored a number of outstanding hurlers, including 2011 Patriot League Pitcher of the Year Ryan Ebner. Additionally, Heather oversaw the development of 2008 graduates Jason Buursma and Mathew Wilson. Those two former Bison claimed back-to-back Patriot League ERA titles, while Buursma earned a pair of First Team All-Patriot League selections as a relief pitcher. Wilson, who was the 2007 Patriot League ERA champion, broke the school re-cord for career shutouts and pitched a complete-game shutout against nationally ranked Florida State in the 2008 NCAA Tournament.

Heather has had the opportunity to see Bison pitchers selected in three Major League Baseball Drafts since his arrival in Lewisburg in Au-gust 2004. Buursma was drafted in 2007 (42nd round by Seattle Mari-ners) and 2008 (25th round by St. Louis Cardinals), while Kyle Walter was selected in the 18th round of the 2006 draft by the Toronto Blue Jays.

In addition to his duties with the Bucknell pitching staff , Heather served as the program’s recruiting coordinator and assisted with all fundraising projects during his time as a Bison assistant.

Prior to his stint as an assistant at Bucknell, Heather served as an assistant coach at Arkansas-Fort Smith from 1999 to 2004.

Heather began his playing career at Arizona Western Col-lege in Yuma, Ariz., where he was MVP of the 1996 team that was ranked third nationally, before moving on to Arkansas. Heather lettered for the Razorbacks as a pitcher in 1997 and 1998, and then became a student assistant in 1999 when Ar-kansas won its fi rst Southeastern Conference championship. He also pitched professionally for the Duluth Dukes of the Northern League in 1998.

Heather, who earned his degree from Arkansas in 2003, and his wife, Emily, live in nearby Miffl inburg with their daughters, fi ve-year-old Ellie, and Maren (1).

Former professional baseball player Jason Neitz joined the Bucknell staff in the winter of 2011, and in the summer of 2012 he was promoted to top as-sistant coach under new head coach Scott Heather. A native of nearby Miffl inburg, Pennsylvania, Neitz was drafted in the 37th round of the 2007 Major League Baseball Draft by the San Francisco Giants.

Since taking over as Bucknell's pitching coach, Neitz has helped the Bison continue as one of the best pitching teams in the Patriot League by focus-ing on keeping the ball low and throwing strikes. In 2015, Neitz oversaw a staff that posted an im-

pressive 3.37 ERA, the lowest for a Bucknell squad in nearly 40 years. That fi gure barely eclipsed the 2014 staff , which registered a 3.44 ERA. The Bison's team ERA has been lowered every year since 2009, with Neitz serving as pitching coach for the most recent three campaigns.

A 2002 graduate of Miffl inburg Area High School, Neitz played baseball for four years at East Carolina before graduating in the fall of 2006 with a bachelor’s degree in physical education. A left-handed pitcher, Neitz was 3-2 with an ERA of 4.71 in 80.1 career innings over 43 appearances with the Pirates. He recorded 55 strikeouts.

Neitz, who serves as Bucknell’s pitching coach, played professionally for four seasons, three in the Giants organization, and most recently one with the Wash-ington Wild Things.

Neitz got his start in the coaching profession as an assistant at Miffl inburg Area High School in the spring of 2010.

Busch, a three-time Patriot League Academic Honor Roll honoree, was a member of the Academic All-Patriot League Team as a senior and was part of Bucknell’s 2010 Patriot League Tournament champion-ship and NCAA team.

Busch has coaching experience as a volunteer instructor at various Bucknell baseball camps the All-Star Baseball Academy in Pennsylvania, Minnesota Twins Youth Baseball Camps, Lovdahl Pitching Academy in Minnesota and with the Roseville, Minnesota, VFW.

About Bucknell

www.BucknellBison.com2016 Bucknell Baseball42

The Department of Athletics and Recreation strives to set the stan-dard of excellence for intercollegiate and intramural programs in higher education, thereby advancing and drawing attention to the mission, core values, and educational goals of Bucknell University.

The Department believes that student-athletes’ academic programs must be their fi rst priority. It is therefore committed to maintaining Bucknell’s high national ranking for student-athletes’ graduation rates and for producing Academic All-Americans, and to continued leader-ship of the Patriot League in Academic Honor Roll nominations, based on grade-point averages. The coaches’ and staff ’s paramount responsibility is maintain-ing academic priorities and supporting student-athletes’ education, even while provid-ing the rigorous and serious NCAA Division I athletic op-portunities Bucknell student-athletes seek.

Further, the Department promotes the personal growth of student-athletes and the general student body by en-couraging personal health, development, and balance among intellectual, social, civic, and physical pursuits; by celebrating challenge and competition; and by preparing participants for service and leadership in the world. Coaches and staff direct a rich array of athletic programs and recreational opportunities aimed at increasing student engagement, as well as strengthening character, healthy living, teamwork, sportsman-ship, and spirit. In creating shared experiences for students, faculty, and staff , as well as alumni, family, and friends, the Department’s programs add substantially to Bucknell’s sense of community and foster life-long relationships with Bucknell.

The Department embraces the University’s decision to compete at the highest extramural level, in Division I of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). Division I membership is valuable not only because this level of competition maximally challenges student-athletes, but also because it signals clearly Bucknell’s high standards and seriousness of purpose in all extracurricular endeavors and it helps position Bucknell apart from other National Liberal Arts Colleges. Likewise, the competitive success the Department seeks, measured in part by consistent contention for the Patriot League Presidents’ Cup, refl ects positively upon Bucknell’s student-athletes and the University alike, and it brings distinction and national recognition to Bucknell.

A student-centered operation, the Department is committed to pro-viding equitable opportunities to women and men, as well as members of minority and majority groups of all kinds. The Department subscribes to, and complies with, all principles and regulations of the Patriot League, the Eastern College Athletic Conference, and the NCAA.

The department is proud that so many of today’s exemplary Bison scholar-athletes will be tomorrow’s outstanding leaders.

tional university where lib-eral arts and professional programs complement each other, where 3,500 full-time students are educated for a lifetime of critical thinking and strong leadership. For more than 160 years, the Uni-versity has remained true to its fundamental purpose: to educate and prepare students for lives that make a diff erence and have a positive impact on the world.

In keeping with that pur-pose, the University has de-

veloped The Plan for Bucknell, which includes its collective vision — “To provide students with the premier undergraduate experience in American higher education.” Students helped shape this vision because of their confi dence in the University.

The Plan comprises fi ve strategies:

Strengthen the Academic Core aims to ensure that a Bucknell edu-cation is challenging and engaging, with openness to new ideas and a culture of innovation;

Deepen the Residential Learning Experience will provide a resi-dential learning and living experience that complements the academic program, integrates the athletics and recreation program and promotes personal growth and development and civic and ethical responsibility;

Enhance Diversity is a commitment to diversity in all its forms within a civil and supportive environment of open exchange to prepare Bucknell graduates to live and work in a globally integrated and intercultural world;

Build Bridges will bring the world to Bucknell — through visiting scholars and sports teams, international students and alumni, guest speakers, international focus semesters, and electronic communications — and bring Bucknell to the world through strategic partnerships and community engagement activities as well as opportunities for off -campus study and faculty research;

Secure Our Financial Future will secure resources necessary to engage new opportunities, lessen dependence on tuition, and ensure our fi nancial future.

Now in its third decade as an all-sport conference combining aca-demic and athletic excellence, the Patriot League sponsors champi-onships in 24 men and women’s sports. Initially started as an NCAA Division I-AA football conference in 1986, the Patriot League became an all-sport conference in 1990 and includes American, Army, Boston University, Bucknell, Colgate, Holy Cross, Lafayette, Lehigh, Loyola and Navy as full members, and Fordham, Georgetown, MIT and Richmond as associate members. These institutions are among the oldest and most prestigious in the nation and their alumni have and continue to play leadership roles in shaping our country. The Patriot League will cel-ebrate its 25th Anniversary as an all-sport conference during the 2015-16 season.

Since 1998, the Patriot League has ranked fi rst each year among all Division I conferences awarding athletic aid in the NCAA Gradua-tion Rate Report. *Navy’s Tom Buff one (Track and Field) and Loren Generi (Women’s Lacrosse) and Lafayette’s Cory Spera (Baseball) earned NCAA Postgrad-uate Scholarships.

*Buff one and Dumiak were named the Corvias Patriot League Male and Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year honorees, respectively.

*Thirty-four student-athletes received Capital One/CoSIDA Academ-ic All-District recognition.

*There were 2,745 student-athletes on the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll in 2014-15, including 217 with a semester GPA of at least 4.0.

*Bucknell’s Ryan Frazier (Men’s Basketball) and Andrea Siefert (Wom-en’s Rowing) each received the Patriot League Award of Outstanding Leadership and Character, while Lehigh’s Ashley Blanks (Women’s Soc-cer) was named the League’s Sportsmanship Award winner.

*Four Patriot Leaguers were named Senior CLASS Award fi nalists, with Colgate’s Caroline Brawner (Women’s Soccer) and Army West Point’s Sam Somers (Men’s Lacrosse) earning fi rst-team recognition.

*Brawner was also one of the League’s nominations for the NCAA Woman of the Year award along with Boston University’s Valentina Cer-da Eimbcke (Field Hockey).

*Navy won the Corvias Patriot League Presidents’ Cup for the third time in the last four years.

*The Mids also won the men’s title while Boston University repeated as women’s champion.

*Navy’s Joseph Greenspan and Boston University’s Dominique Badji were both selected in the fi rst four rounds of the Major League Soccer (MLS) Draft.

*Five Patriot Leaguers were taken in the Major League Baseball (MLB) First-Year Player Draft.

The Presidents’ CupThe Presidents’ Cup signifi es overall excellence in the 24 sports spon-

sored by the Patriot League, and Bucknell has won the Cup 18 times in its 25-year existence, including 14 of the last 18 years.

The Presidents’ Cup is awarded annually to the institution that ac-cumulates the highest point total over the entire academic year, with points awarded on the basis of the school’s fi nish in each of the 24 Patriot League sports. If there is a league tournament in a sport, the points are awarded based on the average of the regular season and tournament fi nish, and if there is no post-season tournament, points are awarded based on regular-season standings.

Today, the Department of Athletics & Recreation strives to set the standard of excellence among all intercollegiate programs by maintaining academic priorities and sup-porting educational and personal development, all while providing the rigorous and competitive Division I athletics opportunity sought by Bucknell student-athletes.

As Bison Athletics seeks to create a comprehensive learning environment that meshes with the academic mission of the University, an important element of the complete student-athlete experience is participation in an elite leadership development program designed to identify, develop, challenge and support student-athletes and coaches in their continual quest to become leaders in academics, in athletics and in life.
