Bucknell takes great pride in its commitment to excellence on and off the playing fields. From Presidents’ Cups to Academic All-Americans to graduation rates that are ranked annually in the national top-10, Bucknell is clearly at the head of the class when it comes to upholding the scholar-athlete ideal.

According to federal data released by the NCAA in the fall of 2008, Bucknell’s • four-year student-athlete graduation rate was second-highest in the nation among student-athletes who entered college between the 1998-99 and 2001-02 academic years. With a four-class average of 89 percent, Bucknell trailed only Davidson (92 percent) among all Division I institutions report-ing federal graduation rates (the Ivy League and military academies do not report federal graduation rates). Georgetown, Notre Dame and Holy Cross were also at 89 percent. Bucknell’s student-athlete graduation rate is identi-cal to its overall student-body average of 89 percent.

Bucknell has claimed a league-high 113 Patriot League Scholar-Athletes of • the Year since the league’s inception as an all-sports conference in 1990-91.

A total of 366 Bison appeared on the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll in • 2008-09 after recording a GPA of 3.2 or better during their sport’s competi-tion season. Among all BU student-athletes, 238 made the Dean’s List with GPAs of 3.5 or better in the spring of 2009.

24 of Bucknell’s 27 varsity squads posted team GPAs of 3.0 or better in the • spring of 2009.

In addition to the 117 • ESPN the Magazine Academic All-Americans produced since 1970, Bucknell has also claimed 276 Academic All-District honorees over the same span, including a school-record 22 in 2008-09.

With three more Patriot League championships in 2008-09, Bucknell has • now earned 73 crowns in 19 years in the league. In addition, Bucknell has had 100 conference players of the year, 83 PL coaches of the year and a whopping 476 individual league champions from sports such as cross country, track & field, swimming & diving, tennis and golf.

Bucknell has captured the Patriot League Presidents’ Cup, signifying the • league’s all-sports champion, 15 times in the 19-year history of the affiliation, including 11 of the last 12 years. Bucknell claimed the overall and women’s Cup standings in 2008-09. It was the 12th straight year and the 15th time overall that the Bison took home the women’s title. In 2008-09, Bucknell won Patriot League titles in women’s outdoor track & field, women’s rowing and men’s golf. Additionally, the baseball and men’s lacrosse teams captured regular-season titles.

Bucknell ranks FIFTH in the nation (to Nebraska, Notre Dame, Penn State • and Stanford) in total number of ESPN The Magazine All-America selections.

A major element in ensuring Bucknell’s commitment to athletics excellence • is the Kenneth G. Langone Athletics & Recreation Center, which opened fully in 2003. One of the finest collegiate athletics facilities of its kind, the center includes the 4,000-seat Sojka Pavilion, the Olympic class Kinney Natatorium, the Krebs Family Fitness Center and the Berger Family Weight Room. A Hall of Fame area, a display of Bucknell’s Medal of Honor recipients, a new Aca-demic All-America wall, a sports medicine suite, modern offices for coaches and staff, and locker room and classroom space are also included in the facil-ity’s layout.

Bucknell Bison AthleticsA National Model in Promoting the Scholar-Athlete Ideal

Bucknell Athletics is first and foremost a student-centered organization, one that strives to be a national model when it comes to operating by a true scholar-athlete model. At Bucknell, student-athletes’ academic programs are their first priority, and providing a competitive Division I athletics program only advances the mission, values and residen-tial learning goals of the university. To that end, the Department of Athletics and Recreation proactively seeks ways to assist student-athletes in their daily academic pursuits. Below are just some of the student-athlete support programs currently in place.

FACULTY ATHLETICS REPRESENTATIVE: The faculty athletics representative (FAR) is a member of the faculty or administrative staff who is designated to represent Buck-nell in its relationships with the NCAA and the Patriot League. Bucknell’s FAR is Mitch Chernin, Professor of Biology. The FAR can enhance the student-athlete experience by promoting a balance between academics, athletics and the social lives of student-athletes, which affords them opportunities to enjoy the full range of collegiate experiences available to students generally.

SIDELINE COACH PROGRAM: This program is a truly unique initiative in Division I college athletics, and it involves the invitation of a member of the faculty, administration, staff or community by one of Bucknell’s 27 varsity teams. The participant has the opportunity to discuss the overall program with the respective coaching staff, including prac-tice preparation and strategy for the upcoming contest. The sideline coach attends a practice session and an actual intercollegiate competition, where he/she is introduced to the team and gains rarely seen insight into the relationships that exist between player-coach and player-player. The purpose of the Sideline Coaches Program is to foster a better understanding by the faculty and administration of the roles played by coaches and athletes in the university’s competitive intercollegiate athletic arena.

ACADEMIC ENHANCEMENT CENTER: In the Fall of 2005, the Department of Athletics opened a study/computer lab for student-athletes on the concourse level of Sojka Pavilion. The center is outfitted with computers, a laser printer, four television monitors and a projection unit with computer, VCR and DVD player. Additionally, the study lab can be used as a meeting place for group projects, tutorial area or just a secluded and quiet study space before or after practice.

LAPTOP PROGRAM: The Department of Athletics owns a number of laptop computers that may be signed out by student-athletes for use on away trips.

STUDENT-ATHLETE ADVISORY COMMITTEE (SAAC): Representatives from each varsity team comprise the SAAC, which is designed to enhance the total student-athlete experience by promoting opportunity, protecting student-athlete welfare, and fostering a positive student-athlete image. The Committee is an invaluable resource for pro-moting communication between athletics administration and student-athletes; promoting communication between athletics and campus-wide administration; providing feedback and insight, as well as soliciting responses into department issues and proposed NCAA legislation; building a sense of community within the athletics program involving all athletics teams; organizing community service projects and efforts; creating a vehicle for student-athlete representation on campus-wide committees; serving as a collective voice of campus student-athletes; and disseminating information to the student-athlete body.

OTHER PROGRAMMING: The Department of Athletics, through the identification of outside speakers and periodic “Brown Bag Luncheons,” thrives to enhance the quality of the student-athlete experience as well as to educate student-athletes on a variety of issues that may affect them throughout their collegiate career. Some recent topics of interest have been alcohol, nutrition, body image, hazing, sexuality, diversity, career development, study skills, religious life and gambling.

cord in both and giving him the highest combined winning percentage (.656) of all Bison. Malloy will spend the fall season studying abroad, and Bucknell eagerly awaits his return from his Semester at Sea.

To ease some of the pressure on the small group of veterans, the Bison will have to call on their youth. They have plenty as seven student-athletes are sophomores or younger. That number is deceptive in terms of experience, however. Sophomores Gregory Maxson and Clark Bogle both put up solid 2008-09 seasons. Maxson was 14-5 in singles, including 4-0 at No. 4. Bogle finished strong in his first year in the Orange and Blue. The walk-on earned the winning point against Lehigh in last year’s Patriot League Tournament, helping Bucknell to a 4-2 first-round victory.

Gregg Cohenca is a talented sophomore who made a strong start to his career. The New York native went 13-12 in doubles action and posted his best results in singles at the No. 4 spot last year. Heading into the new season, Cohenca will kook to continue his contributions to the team and move up the ranks after working hard to improve his game in the off-season.

Helt is excited about the depth on the men’s side and that is in part due to the strong freshman unit. The newest Bison – Josh Katten, Ryan Marcil, Kelly Morque and Evan Zimmer – have a handful of all-state selections and state championship appearances between them. The promise they have shown in the early days of the season has the Bison coaching staff eager to see how they will fit into the mix as the year progresses.

The year officially opens Sept. 12-13 with the Bloomsburg Invitation-al, while spring action starts up with Penn on Jan. 23. Patriot League play opens with Navy on March 27.

The Bucknell men’s tennis team is coming off a 2008-09 season in which it played in its third consecu-tive Patriot League Tournament semifinal, but despite graduating their top three players in Daniel Bednarek, Jonathan Brenner and Ryan Sandburg, the Bison have not lost ground heading into 2009-10. They return a solid core from last year’s squad and welcome four additions with the power to contribute early.

Although early success is al-ways a positive, it is not always a given. Head coach Rebecca Helt and the Bison will have some work to do through the fall tournament season to find out who exactly will

step up and fill those vacated roles from last year.“It’s too early to really see who’s going to move from down low and

really make a bigger impact,” said Helt, who is beginning her eighth year with the men’s squad. “One of the key components that we’re looking for is to match up our doubles teams, so we’re moving people around, trying some different combinations.”

The Bison always hope to finish on top as the season culminates in the Patriot League Tournament. Postseason success would taste extra sweet this year as Bucknell is hosting the league championships April 23-25. Helt is cautiously optimistic when predicting how her men’s team will fit into the Patriot League mix in 2010.

“Because we’re so young and the make-up of our team going into this year is going to be drastically different than last year it’s really going to be hard to say (where the men will finish in the league),” explained Helt. “I think middle to top half of the conference would be a good out-look on that.”

The home-court advantage in April will hopefully work in the Bison’s favor, especially since the Bucknell Tennis Courts were resurfaced over the summer.

“It’s awesome to be out there. The courts are just excellent,” Helt praised. “I do think that the guys like playing at home. I know that they have a lot of friends and support, so that’s going to help. They can stay here and have focused practices right up until the day we play. I think that’s going to benefit their performance.”

Those Patriot League Championships are still a long way off and in the meantime Bucknell will spend its days solidifying its lineup. One integral spot that will certainly see some changes is the No. 1 singles position. The Bison have had the benefit of some strong No. 1s over the years. The most recent Bucknellian to fill that position was gradu-ate Sandburg, who finished his career in the Orange and Blue last year with the program records in doubles (87) and total (150) victories. That leaves some big shoes for current Bison Anton Kovic to fill. The junior played primarily at the No. 2 singles last spring. Helt knows Kovic will be up to the challenge of following in the footsteps of the winningest players in Bucknell history, but it won’t be easy.

“We’re going to miss the level of our previous No. 1s as far as Ira Reibeisen and Ryan Sandburg,” said Helt. “We’re going to be looking for Anton Kovic to step up into that No. 1 spot and be able to compete at that spot because it’s going to be tough.”

Kovic is one of just three upperclassmen for the Bison in the new campaign along with the team’s co-captains senior Zach Hascoe and junior Mark Malloy. Hascoe suffered through injuries last spring, but the Connecticut native is sure to produce as he regains his health. Despite his limited playing time, Hascoe still ranks among the best in Bucknell history with 44 doubles wins (ninth all-time) and 89 total wins (10th).

Malloy returns as the squad’s lone all-league performer from last year. He finished the season 23-8 in singles and 17-13 in doubles, making him the only player other than Sandburg to have a winning re-

The Bucknell women’s tennis team has gotten comfortable at the top and for good reason. The Bi-son advanced to their fifth straight Patriot League Championship match in 2008-09, and they see no reason for that streak to end now. The squad returns nine players from last year, including all-league selections Tania Varela and Lau-ren Lucido.

Bucknell took the end of the season by storm last year. The Orange and Blue won five straight matches in March and April, and finished by taking eight of the last 10. Those two losses came at the hands of five-time defending Pa-triot League Champion Army, and Bucknell will have to solve the Black Knights puzzle if it is going

to hoist the Patriot League trophy for the first time in program history.Although the Bison will spend the early parts of the new season ar-

ranging their lineup and deciding on doubles pairings, Rebecca Helt, the women’s head coach for the 13th year, is already clear about her prediction for the Bison women in 2009-10.“I know that the women will get back to the championship match in the spring,” said Helt. “Our en-tire goal is to get over that hump and win it. We’re definitely one of the two strongest teams in the conference.”

Contributing to that strength is a number of factors, including a wealth of talent across the board and several student-athletes who have proved they have the tools to win on a regular basis.

“We graduated a couple of key players but brought in two that I think are going to be able to step up and help us out a lot,” said Helt in ref-erence to recent graduates Paulina Gamboa and Ashley Globerman. “We have solid depth, and probably one of the strongest No. 1 players in the whole conference.”

That strong player is Varela who, along with former teammate Gam-boa, has earned three selections to the All-Patriot League First Team. She enters her senior season on the cusp of 100 wins and ranks eighth all-time at Bucknell with 97. Varela was an integral part in the Bison’s Patriot League run as she went undefeated at No. 1 singles in league play after missing the fall tournament season while studying abroad.

Lucido joined Varela with all-league honors, being named to the sec-ond team for the second time. Lucido finished the year with a 22-6 overall record in singles and a 23-6 tally in doubles. The junior’s win-ning percentage was best on the team at .789 and the wins totals ranks pushed her into 12th all-time at Bucknell with 82 career victories. That success should continue into the new season as she will continue to occupy the No. 2 singles position.

Coming in strong at second doubles is another senior, Carlin Calca-terra. She went 12-9 last spring, including 11-8 at No. 2, while partner-ing with five different teammates. The pairing of choice was with Varela, and together they put up the second-best numbers with of any return-ing Bison with12 wins behind only Lucido. Regardless of who she plays with, Calcaterra is on track to continue with the success that has seen her rise to 11th in career doubles wins (42).

As depth is one of the Bison’s strong points, it should come as no surprise that some of the team’s so-called support players include a ju-nior in Dara Dwojewski, who has 47 career singles wins despite spend-ing part of her two seasons injured, and Dumitrita Iepuras, the reigning Patriot League Rookie of the Year. While battling through injuries as a sophomore, Dwojewski still managed a .600 winning percentage, going 12-8 in both singles and doubles. The Bison will look for her to rebound in 2009-10 and continue with her winning habits.

Iepuras became the third Bucknellian to earn the league’s top rookie honor, following in teammate’s Varela’s footsteps. Now a sophomore,

Iepuras will aim to build on her outstanding start that resulted in a 23-5 singles record in just her first season in the Orange and Blue.

The remainder of the Bison’s roster includes at least one representa-tive from each class. Junior Lauren Rottkamp, like classmate Dwojews-ki, spent part of last season on injured reserve. She bounced back in the spring after missing the entire fall tournament season to earn double-digit singles wins for a second consecutive season.

Freshmen Jennie Ciotti and Daria Tuzhikova, sophomore Courtney Casey and senior Kirstyn Sotak will also be key to the Bison maintaining the depth necessary to compete at the highest level. Casey and Sotak played key back-up roles in the fall, combining for six singles and five doubles wins in the early-season tournaments. Helt also expects the newcomers Ciotti and Tuzhikova to step into the lineup and be a big help to their new team.

Bucknell will get its first oppor-tunities to see the season unfold with the Bloomsburg Invitational Sept. 12-13 and the first of their home tournaments Sept. 18-20. The spring season then kicks off at Penn State on Jan. 23, while league action starts March 27 with Navy.

Rebecca Helt is in her 13th season as head coach of the women’s tennis team, and her eighth at the helm of the men’s program. As coach of the Bison women’s squad, Helt has notched a 134-113 record. With the men’s squad, she has recorded a 61-94 mark.

Helt has led the Bison women’s squad to five consecutive Patriot League championship matches, while in 2008 the men finished above .500 for the first time since 2002.

During her Bucknell career, Helt has coached 12 All-Patriot League singles players in Veronica Brown, Nada Curcic, Paulina Gamboa, Ash-ley Globerman, Chelsea Mills and Tanya Sichko on the women’s side and Ira Reibeisen and Ryan Sandburg on the men’s. Additionally, cur-rent players Dumitrita Iepuras, Lauren Lucido, Tania Varela and Mark Malloy have earned All-Patriot League honors. Iepuras was also named the 2009 Patriot League Rookie of the Year.

Last year, Gamboa and Varela were first-team All-PL choices, mark-ing the third consecutive season the duo earned first-team honors. Having been first-team selections three times under Helt, Gamboa and Varela surpassed Curcic (2004, 2005) and Brown (2005, 2006) for the most in women’s program history.

Reibeisen, who ranks second on Bucknell’s all-time wins list, earned three consecutive First Team All-Patriot League men’s honors, the first Bison to ever accomplish that feat. Helt also coached one all-league doubles team in Kerry Callaghan and Kristin Inglis (‘00). Callaghan was also an ITA Scholar-Athlete in 2000.

Helt also had the opportunity to coach a Patriot League Sportsman-ship Award winner, Asher Salam. In 2005, Curcic was named the first PL Player of the Year in the history of the program.

A 1990 graduate of Lock Haven University, Helt earned a bachelor of arts degree in journalism while competing for the Lock Haven tennis team. Following her college graduation, Helt earned a teaching certifi-cation from the United States Professional Tennis Registry and began teaching part time while working for STEP, Inc., in its wilderness-based team building program.

In 1994, Helt was hired as the assistant pro at West Branch Racquet Club in Williamsport, Pa. She continued her duties at West Branch while coaching the girls’ tennis team at Williamsport High School.

Two years later, Helt was hired at the Doylestown Racquet Club in Doylestown, Pa. She has won three different raquetball state championships. Helt took over the women’s coaching reins at Bucknell in 1997, and in 2002 she was named the Bison men’s coach as well. Helt is also in-volved in tennis on the national level as an NCAA chair for wom-en’s tennis.

Helt continues her involve-ment in the game outside of Bucknell’s program. Recently, the Bucknell tennis programs received a generous grant from USTA to promote tennis in the local community. Helt also vol-unteers during the summer as a Special Olympics sport advisor, where she works with various events.

Stephen Schram, a certified United States Professional Tennis As-sociation teaching professional, enters his second season as assistant men’s and women’s tennis coach at Bucknell. Prior to joining the Bison, Schram, who is a 2006 graduate of Florida Gulf Coast University with a degree in political science, served as assistant women’s tennis coach at Radford University in Virginia and as assistant men’s and women’s tennis coach at Wofford College in South Carolina.

Schram played college tennis at the University of Charleston in 2001-2002, before transferring to FGCU, where he earned three letters in men’s tennis. He spent 2003 as a tennis instructor at the Tough Ten-nis Academy in Naples, Fla., where he lived, worked and trained. While there, he taught nationally ranked junior players between the ages of 12 and 18.

Following his graduation from FGCU, Schram began working at Wofford College, where he organized practices and individual on-court workouts and assisted with recruiting. In the spring of 2007, the men’s tennis team at Wofford achieved a record number of victories against Division I opponents. Schram took on similar assistant coaching duties at Radford University.

A native of Zanesville, Ohio, Schram spent the summers of 2007-2009 as a coach and instructor at the University of Notre Dame Tennis Camp. He also spent the sum-mer of 2009 as a camp instructor at Pepperdine University.

MARK McGUIRE (1995) -- Fourteenth in BU history in overall victories with 79, and 12th in BU history for doubles wins with 42 ... two-time winner of the ITA Scholar-Athlete Award.

William C. Bartol (1887): William Bartol, a pioneer of baseball and tennis at Bucknell and head of the mathematics department for 46 years, is generally given credit for cre-ating the nickname “Bisons” for Bucknell athletic teams. An outstanding student and athlete as an undergraduate, he also served as head of the engineering department and as director of the observatory. Bartol played on baseball teams that lost only one game in four years while helping raise funds in support of the Athletic Association. About 1910, he suggested that the nickname “Bisons” be adopted for Bucknell teams because of the proximity of the campus to areas populated by the American bison in the late 1700s. Bartol, who died in 1940 at the age of 92, was connected with Bucknell longer than any other person in its history as a student, teacher and university historian. Bartol entered the Hall of Fame with the Class of 1987.

Malcolm E. Musser (’18): A basketball and tennis player as an undergraduate and later varsity basketball coach and freshman football and baseball coach, Musser prob-ably coached, taught and watched more Bucknell athletes than any other person. Musser entered the Hall of Fame with the Class of 1979.

Thomas A. Thompson (’60): A three-year starter in baseball and basketball and cap-tain of both teams, Thompson pitched in the Detroit Tigers system and has coached baseball, basketball, golf and tennis teams at Bucknell. Thompson entered the Hall of Fame with the Class of 1986.

Alexander Anderson (’71): A three-year letterman in tennis and captain his senior year. Anderson had a career singles record of 38-2. He continues to hold the school record for consecutive match victories at 33, and is third in career singles match winning percentage at .950. Anderson entered the Hall of Fame with the Class of 1999.

Stephen W. Baird (’72): The 1971 MAC fall tennis champion, Baird was an Eastern singles semifinalist and doubles finalist in 1972 and had a career 38-1 singles record. President of the American Platform Tennis Association, Baird is a five-time national champion in the sport. Baird entered the Hall of Fame with the Class of 1983.

Marjorie A. Deck (’73): Co-captain of the field hockey and basketball teams, Deck was also undefeated in tennis dual matches in her career and ranked fifth in the East as a senior. Deck is often referred to as one of the pioneers of women’s tennis at Bucknell having played on the team before women’s sports gained varsity status in the fall of 1973. Women’s tennis was given varsity status only months after Deck’s graduation. Her success on the club team had much to do with the upgrade of women’s tennis to varsity status. Deck entered the Hall of Fame with the Class of 1989.

Ed Hess (’90): One of the best tennis players in Bucknell history, Hess held the school record for singles victories at 60 until the fall of 2007, while accumulating only three singles losses during his career. He stands eighth on the singles-doubles combined win list at 101 and is 13th on Bucknell’s all-time doubles victories list. Hess won the East Coast Conference singles title in 1987, 1989 and 1990, in addition to two conference doubles titles. His teams won three ECC team championships, posting a 38-12 record in those seasons. Hess entered the Hall of Fame with the Class of 2003.

Bucknell Athletics Hall of Fame

In its second decade of combining academic and athletic excellence, the Patriot League sponsors championships in 23 men and women’s sports. Initially started as an NCAA Division I-AA football conference in 1986, the Patriot League became an all-sport conference in 1990 and includes American, Army, Bucknell, Colgate, Holy Cross, Lafayette,

Lehigh and Navy as full members, and Fordham and Georgetown as associate members. These insti-tutions are among the oldest and most prestigious in the nation and their alumni have, and continue to play leadership roles in shaping our country.

Since 1998, the Patriot League has ranked first each year among all Division I conferences awarding athletic aid in the NCAA Graduation Rate Report. The League finished at the top spot with 96 percent of its teams reporting a graduation rate of 85 percent or higher in the most recent data. In addition, 76 Patriot League teams earned NCAA Academic Performance Program Public Recognition Awards after posting academic progress rate scores in the top 10 percent of all squads in their respective sports.

The Patriot League’s mission is simple, to provide successful com-petitive athletic experiences while maintaining high academic standards, and to prepare its student-athletes to be leaders in society.

During the 2008-09 academic year, Patriot League student-athletes and teams accomplished the following:

• 14 student-athletes earned ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-America honors

• 61 student-athletes were recognized as ESPN The Magazine/Co-SIDA Academic All-District recipients, with 45 on the First Team.

• Bucknell won its 15th overall and women’s Patriot League Presi-dents’ Cup trophy, while Army won the men’s trophy for the first time since 2005.

• Holy Cross men’s soccer senior Jerry Dickinson was awarded a Fulbright Grant to work and study in South Africa.

• Navy’s Kelly Zahalka earned her third Academic All-America selec-tion from CoSIDA, and was also named to the USA Today First-Team All-Academic squad. She also earned both a Truman and Marshall Scholarship.

• Navy’s Lizzie Barnes was one of 58 student-athletes nationally to receive an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship and was also a First-Team All-Senior All-America selection.

• Army became the first Patriot League team to advance to the finals of the NCAA Baseball Regional.

• Bucknell’s Andrew Cohen set a record with a score of 208 at the Patriot League Golf Championship, and was named Golf World’s College Player of the Week for his effort.

• Colgate’s Nick Hennessey and Steve Jonas and Holy Cross’ Brett McDermott all signed NFL free agent contracts.

• The Lehigh women’s basketball team was one of 14 NCAA Tourna-ment participants to record a perfect graduation rate.

• Army men’s soccer goalkeeper A.J. Glubzinski was a First-Team All-Senior All-America selection and Lowe’s Senior CLASS award finalist.

• American’s Irene Schickhardt and Christine Fingerhuth were both named Longstreth/NFHCA Division I Field Hockey All-Americans.

• Navy’s Erica Ziel became the fourth female student-athlete to earn the Patriot League Scholar-Athlete award in Cross Country, Indoor and Outdoor Track and Field in the same academic year.

• Twelve Patriot League student-athletes received Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars awards.

• Bucknell rowing senior Page Kannor, Army baseball sophomore Kevin McKague and Lehigh softball senior Lisa Sweeney each appeared in SportsIllustrated’s “Faces in the Crowd”.

dard of excellence for intercollegiate and intramural programs in higher education, thereby advancing and drawing attention to the mission, core values, and educational goals of Bucknell University.

The Department believes that student-athletes’ academic programs must be their first priority. It is therefore committed to maintaining Bucknell’s high national ranking for student-athletes’ graduation rates and for producing Academic All-Americans, and to continued leadership of the Patriot League in Academic Honor Roll nominations, based on grade-point averages. The coaches’ and staff’s paramount responsibil-ity is maintaining academic priorities and supporting student-athletes’ education, even while providing the rigorous and serious NCAA Division I athletic opportunities Bucknell student-athletes seek.

Further, the Department promotes the personal growth of student-athletes and the general student body by encouraging personal health, development, and balance among intellectual, social, civic, and physical pursuits; by celebrating challenge and competition; and by preparing par-ticipants for service and leadership in the world. Coaches and staff direct a rich array of athletic programs and recreational opportunities aimed at increasing student engagement, as well as strengthening character, healthy living, teamwork, sportsmanship, and spirit. In creating shared experiences for students, faculty, and staff, as well as alumni, family, and friends, the Department’s programs add substantially to Bucknell’s sense of community and foster life-long relationships with Bucknell.

The Department embraces the University’s decision to compete at the highest extramural level, in Division I of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). Division I membership is valuable not only because this level of competition maximally challenges student-athletes, but also because it signals clearly Bucknell’s high standards and seriousness of purpose in all extracurricular endeavors and it helps position Bucknell apart from other National Liberal Arts Colleges. Likewise, the com-petitive success the Department seeks, measured in part by consistent contention for the Patriot League Presidents’ Cup, reflects positively upon Bucknell’s student-athletes and the University alike, and it brings distinction and national recognition to Bucknell.

The Bucknell men’s tennis team will host the Patriot League Tournament April 23-25, 2010. The Bison have finished in the top four of the league standings each oft he last three years. Bucknell’s women’s team played host to the league tournament last season where it advanced to the championship match for the fifth straight year. The Bison women will play their 2010 tournament April 16-18 in Hamilton, N.Y.

About Bucknell

The Bucknell University Department of Athletics and Recreation prides itself on setting the standard of excellence when it comes to success both on the playing fields and in the classroom. With 15 Patriot League Presidents’ Cups in 19 years, national leadership in gradu-ation rates, 117 Academic All-Americans in 39 years and 113 Patriot League Scholar-Athletes in 19 years, Bucknell is clearly at the head of the class in terms of upholding the scholar-athlete model.

The addition of the Kenneth G. Langone Athletics and Recreation Center, one of the fin-est collegiate athletics and recreation venues of its kind, ensures the continuation of that success.

The facility enhances each of Bucknell’s 27 varsity programs and greatly expands the scope of its growing intramural and recreational sports offerings. A visually appealing structure located along Moore Avenue on the “downhill” side of campus, the Langone Athletics and Recreation Center was designed to reach out to all members of the campus community, including the student body, varsity student-athletes, faculty, staff and alumni.

Three primary venues lie within the facility: the Arthur D. Kinney Jr. Natato-rium, the 4,000-seat Gary A. Sojka Pavilion and the Krebs Family Fitness Center. Other features include a new location for the Bucknell Athletics Hall of Fame, a display of Bucknell’s Congressional Medal of Honor recipients, a brand new dis-play highlighting Bucknell’s all-time Academic All-Americans, a sports medicine and athletic training suite, classrooms, modern offices for coaches and staff and increased locker room space for varsity and recreational athletes.

The facility is named in honor of Ken Langone, a 1957 Bucknell graduate who, along with his wife Elaine, pledged $11 million toward the center’s construc-tion. Langone was a member of the university Board of Trustees from 1980 to 1996.

One of the special qualities of the Langone Athletics and Recreation Center is the manner in which it supplements the pre-existing facilities. The construction surrounds Gerhard Fieldhouse and historic Davis Gymnasium, which has been restored as a competition venue for the Bison wrestling and volleyball teams, as well as intramural, recreation and other varsity practice activities.

As Bucknell continues to strive toward its mission of setting the standard of excellence in college athletics, the Langone Athletics and Recreation Center becomes the centerpiece in an already impressive cache of athletics facilities that includes the 13,100-seat Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium and its newly installed FieldTurf and 8-lane track surface; the scenic Bucknell Golf Club; Depew Field, the home of the Bison baseball team; the West Fields softball diamond; and Emmitt Field and Graham Field at Holmes Stadium, the new portion of the West Fields project that includes covered grandstand seats, ticket and conces-sion areas, team rooms, a training room and a press box area for soccer, field hockey and women’s lacrosse.

CLEARINGHOUSEThe NCAA mandates that all student-athletes interested in competing at the Division I or II level be certified through the NCAA Initial Eligibility Clearinghouse. Contact high school coaches, athletics director and/or guidance counselor for necessary paperwork.

CONTACTSAs per NCAA by-law 13.02.3, a contact is any face-to-face encounter between a prospect or the prospect’s parent or legal guardian and an institutional staff member or athletics representative during which any dialogue occurs in excess of an exchange of a greeting. Any such face-to-face encounter that is prearranged or takes place on the grounds of the prospect’s high school, or at the site of organized competition or practice involving the prospect’s high school, prepartory school, two-year college, or all-star team is considered a contact, regardless of the conversation that occurs. We are limited to three off-campus contact days per prospective student-athlete.

CORRESPONDENCEIt’s important that the prospective student-athlete get in touch with Head Coach Rebecca Helt as soon as possible. A simple letter of inquiry or email to [email protected] into the tennis program will initiate the re-cruiting process. In the spring of your junior year is the most appropriate time to contact Coach Helt.

ADMISSIONS DEADLINESNovember 15, 2010 -- Early Decision I Application and Financial Aid deadlineJanuary 1, 2011 -- Early Decision II and Regular Decision Application and Financial Aid deadline.

EARLY DECISIONStudents who are absolutely, 100% confident Bucknell is their top col-lege choice are encouraged to apply during the Early Decision process. Advantages are that you’ll have an Admissions decision prior to Christ-mas and all students accepted during the early decision process are guaranteed financial aid for which they qualify.

EVALUATIONSAs per NCAA by-law 13.02.6.1, an evaluation is any off-campus activity designed to assess the academic qualifications or athletic ability of a prospect, including any visit to a prospect’s educational institution (during which no contact occurs) or the observation of a prospect participating in any practice or competition at any site. We are limited in our number of evaluations per prospective student-athlete.

FINANCIAL AIDBucknell University does not offer athletic scholarships in the sport of tennis. All financial aid is awarded on the basis of need. Prospective stu-dent-athletes should complete the CSS “Profile Form” in the early Fall.

INTERVIEWSHead Coach Rebecca Helt strongly encourages all prospective student-athletes to arrange for an on-campus interview with the Admissions Office. If it is not possible to interview on campus, alumni interviews are highly recommended. All interviews should be arranged through the Admissions Office by calling 570-577-1101.

TELEPHONE CALLSAs per NCAA by-law 13.1.3.1, institutional staff members may not tele-phone a prospect (or the prospect’s relatives or legal guardians) prior to July 1 following the prospect’s completion of the junior year in high school. However, the prospect can call the tennis office at any time. After July 1, institutional staff members may telephone a prospect once per week (measured Sunday through Saturday). The once-per-week limit applies to the entire institution.

VISITS, OfficialAccording to NCAA by-law 13.7.1.2, a prospect may not make more than five expense-paid visits to NCAA member institutions, regardless of the number of sports in which the prospect is involved. An institution may not provide an expense-paid visit to a prospect who has not presented the institution with a high school (or college) academic transcript and a score from a PSAT, an SAT, a PACTPlus, or an ACT test taken on a national testing date under national testing conditions. The official visit may not exceed 48 hours. Coach Helt encourages these visits take place from September 1 to February 15.

VISITS, UnofficialAccording to NCAA by-law 13.8.1, a prospect may visit an institution’s campus at the prospect’s own expense an unlimited number of times and may make an unofficial visit before the prospect’s senior year in high school.
