Holden Forest & Gardens4

In 2014, the shared values and vision of the Holden Arboretum and Cleveland Botanical Garden inspired us to create a single organization, working to create greener communities to benefit those who live and work in Northeast Ohio.

We knew that this would be a challenging process. Hundreds of details needed to be worked out behind the scenes, but we were confident the staff was equal to the challenge. Our first step in bringing the organizations together was to fine tune our

strategic plan, with a focus on four key priorities – biodiversity, green infrastructure, sustainable land use, and plant and environmental literacy. This led to the creation of five goals:

• Nationally Recognized Research• Compelling and Relevant Destinations• Outreach with Impact• Creating a Distinctive Image• Long-term Planning and Perspective

While work on these goals is just beginning, we have already seen significant progress. Our conservation staff has created a new tool to quickly assess the health of our woodlands which we are sharing with forest management professionals. Partnering with like-minded organizations in the community, we are playing a key role in the Cleveland Tree Plan, aimed at restoring Cleveland’s declining tree canopy. Other partnerships have been formed to study the best practices for forest restoration and to create seed farms for disease-resistant chestnut trees and pest resistant ash trees. Our Green Corps urban farms continue to flourish and provide summer jobs for many Cleveland young people.

We are gratified to see that the public is embracing our integrated organization, coming in greater numbers to visit both our Kirtland and University Circle locations. And once they visit, more are choosing to become members, taking advantage of all the benefits of membership and supporting the vital work we are doing.

Those are just a few examples of the progress we have made, and our efforts are only possible because of the strong support of our members and donors. We thank you for that ongoing support and hope you realize the difference it makes not just to us, but to the residents of the region who benefit from our progress.

Two years after the leadership at the Holden Arboretum and Cleveland Botanical Garden integrated, we are seeing a positive public response to that decision .

In 2016, the Holden Arboretum and Cleveland Botanical Garden encouraged guests to explore new heights, delighting visitors with the opportunity to experience the breathtaking view from the top of the Kalberer Family Emergent Tower; stroll through the forest 65 feet above ground on the Judith and Maynard H. Murch IV Canopy Walk; or visit a variety of creatively designed treehouses in the gardens at University Circle. At the same time, we were reaching new heights together, setting record-breaking numbers for attendance and membership, while building new partnerships in the community to create a greener Northeast Ohio.

GREATER VISITATIONTwo years after the leadership at the Holden Arboretum and Cleveland Botanical Garden integrated, we are seeing a positive public response to that decision.

At the Arboretum, a record breaking 178,759 guests visited the grounds in 2016, nearly doubling visitation from the previous year’s total of 96,620. Prior to the 2016 fiscal year, the record for attendance at the Arboretum was 122,882 set in 2007 during the popular Holden Express Garden Railroad exhibit.

The Judith and Maynard H. Murch IV Canopy Walk with the Kalberer Family Emergent Tower was a contributing factor to the 45 percent increase in attendance. Over the course of the year, 104,750 guests visited the Murch Canopy Walk, while more than 96,590 climbed the 202 steps to reach the top of the Kalberer Tower.

Popular traditional events, including Glow and Orchid Mania, as well as the summer exhibition, Branch Out, brought 210,601 guests to Botanical Garden, a three percent increase over

2015 totals when 208,870 guests were welcomed to the gardens and glass-houses at University Circle.

While a portion of the increase can be attributed to members of the Arboretum and Botanical Garden taking advantage of the expanded benefits the integration has provided members, the organization’s total attendance figure for 2016 of 389,180 represents a significant increase in the people being reached as the joint organization strives to achieve its vision of helping to create “vibrant green communities and diverse native forests” in the Great Lakes region capable of flourishing and sustaining life.

The increased visitation and the value of membership, which offered members access to both the Arboretum and the Botanical Garden, led to a 20 percent increase in membership for the combined organization. At the Arboretum, membership soared from 10,134 at the end of 2015 to 11,752 at the end of 2016, a 15.5 percent increase. At the Botanical Garden, membership climbed from 9324 at the end of 2015 to 10,340 at the end of 2016, a 5 percent increase.

GREATER OUTREACH Bringing people to the Arboretum and Botanical Garden is just one aspect of our efforts to promote plant literacy and greener communities in Northeast Ohio. Pursuing our vision of a Northeast Ohio where trees, forests and gardens

provide maximum ecological and social benefits to the region’s people and com-munities, the Arboretum and Botanical Garden have joined forces with the City of Cleveland, the Western Reserve Land Conservancy, LAND studio, Cleveland Neighborhood Progress to create the Cleveland Tree Plan. The plan addresses the significance trees play in the community and decline of the city’s tree canopy, hoping to restore the city’s once vibrant urban forest and making it worthy of Cleveland’s “Forest City” nickname. To aid in this effort, the Holden Arboretum and Cleveland Botanical Garden also serve as a resource for municipalities, institutions and organizations interested in creating greener communities, hosting urban forest workshops and training community volunteers in best tree care practices

A $500,000 grant from the Sherwick Fund of the Cleveland Foundation supported the launch of the Sherwin Institute for Woodland Management, which provides educational opportunities for owners of property, from small urban lots to rural woodlots of 10-15 acres, to increase their knowledge of how to properly care for, manage and utilize their trees for environmental, ecological, social and economic benefits.

In an effort to better understand and manage the Arboretum’s 3,000 acres of forest, the conservation staff developed a rapid upland forest assessment tool (RUFA), allowing staff members to hone their conservation and management efforts to advance Holden’s mission to conserve native forests. In its current form, the tool is designed to capture information about the condition of the forest and compare it to the character-istics of a healthy, non-impacted old growth forest. A team of four surveyors with basic plant identification knowledge can assess a one hectare cell (about 2.5

acres) in roughly 45 minutes, as opposed to other methods that can take four highly-trained people four days to access the same area.

While the organization is just starting to see the positive effects of these new initiatives, in 2016 it celebrated the anniversary of its innovative and successful Green Corps outreach program.

For more than 20 summers, the Cleveland Botanical Garden’s signature outreach program, Green Corps, has transformed once-vacant Cleveland lots into vibrant urban farming opportunities for high school students, who build workplace and life skills by spending one or more summers learning, growing and selling produce at five learning farms in the City of Cleveland. Through managing urban learning farms, from planting seeds to harvesting and selling crops, participants learn invaluable life skills, teamwork, business basics, agriculture, plant science and marketing, while gaining an appreci-ation for the environment and the community. Students also bring freshly grown local produce to neighborhoods with otherwise limited access to them.

GREATER UNDERSTANDING Helping those visitors explore the grounds and find meaning in what they are seeing was the motivating factor behind a project that added improved interpretive signage in the Myrtle S. Holden Wildflower Garden. One of the first places ephemeral wildflowers bloom in the spring, the garden is a favorite place for guests to explore. At the beginning of the fiscal year, 21 new signs were installed in the garden to tell the story of the plant communities found there and connect visitors to the ecosys-tems found throughout the state of Ohio.

Efforts at the Botanical Garden are also underway to catalog the plants in the gardens and glasshouses, creating a record of what visitors are seeing and building a database for future study of those plants. These detailed records of each plant’s acquisition and growth are part of what makes the Arboretum and Botanical Garden more than just a pretty place, and the living museum it is meant to be for our guests, members and donors.

Scientists at the Arboretum are forging new partnerships with area universities and agencies, working to find solutions to the issues facing our native forests. Ongoing work with the U.S. Forest Service is focused on the search for disease-resistant chestnut and emerald ash borer resistant ash trees, with the goal of creating seed farms at the Arboretum that can aid in future reforestation efforts. The research department is also teaming up with the Cleveland Metroparks to study and determine best practices for reforesting using the Acacia Metroparks Reservation, a former golf course, as a living lab.

Holden scientists are also creating a foundation for future research, playing an active role in the training of the next generation of scientists by working with graduate, undergraduate and high school students.
