Transcript of 2015_Annual Report_PRINT2
On behalf of Decatur Morgan Hospital, it is with great pride that I present to you our Annual
Report covering fiscal year 2014 – 2015.
Healthcare organizations throughout our country are facing great challenges which include - continued reductions in reimbursement, state budget reductions that impact health programs, and a failure
to expand Medicaid. In addition, a new coding methodology for various diagnosis
codes has been implemented, and physicians are now required to document illnesses on a
computer versus writing in a chart.
Hospitals nationwide continue to struggle financially and are closing their doors or eliminating programs daily. Decatur Morgan Hospital is no stranger to these trends and in fact, has a greater challenge than most hospitals as the lowest reimbursed county in the state.
Despite the reimbursement disadvantages, Decatur Morgan Hospital can be proud of this past year’s performance. In partnership with our medical staff, frontline team members, volunteers, community, and Huntsville Hospital Health System, we have achieved a positive net margin which is detailed on page 15.
We could not have achieved this progress without the tireless efforts of our physicians, frontline team members, volunteers, the continued support of Huntsville Hospital Health system, the leadership of our board, and you, our community. Thank you for supporting Decatur Morgan Hospital, our
Foundation and trusting our caregivers to serve you.
Decatur Morgan Hospital continues to have a committed partnership with Huntsville Hospital Health System, who believes healthcare should remain non-profit and locally controlled. This philosophy has allowed Decatur Morgan Hospital to offer state-of-the-art technology, enhanced health services, and health education throughout Morgan County- regardless of one’s ability to pay.
In this report, you will see growth numbers, awards, service expansions, new equipment, facility upgrades, foundation events and our community outreach efforts. You will also notice our audited financial results for the past four years, reflecting the efforts
of our physicians, frontline team members, volunteers, and, you the community, in supporting your hospital.
Caring for you is a privilege we take very seriously and in 2015, we celebrated 100 years of caring for this community with a huge block party attended by more than 3500 people. It was our way of giving back as a small thank you to those that have supported us throughout the years. We look forward to serving you for 100 more.

US NEWS AND WORLD REPORT RECOGNITION
As we continue pointing out the positive aspects of our community that invite investment and new residents to choose Decatur and Morgan County, it is important to recognize Decatur Morgan Hospital. Healthcare is a vital element of quality of life in any community. Our local hospital was recently honored by U.S. News and World Report as one of three high-performing hospitals in the state of Alabama. The report was released in the magazine’s annual list of best acute care hospitals, citing Decatur Morgan for its treatment of Heart Failure and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease. The process for identifying the best hospitals includes physician surveys, as well as an extensive analysis of patient outcomes and structural measures such as hospital volume, technology and additional resources. Decatur Morgan was included along with Huntsville Hospital and the University of Alabama in Birmingham, the latter considered one of the best research hospitals in the world. We salute the leadership and employees of Decatur Morgan Hospital for their hard work, bringing positive attention to our area and making Decatur and Morgan County a first-rate community.

100 YEARS OF CARING
Decatur Morgan Hospital has been meeting the health and wellness
needs of those we serve for 100 years. It all began in 1888, when the
Ladies of the Benevolent Society came together to care for members
of the community affected by the Yellow Fever epidemic. When the
epidemic passed, the need for a hospital was clearly evident and the
Ladies began selling surplus supplies to raise the necessary funds. In 1915,
the hospital opened its doors and began caring for patients.
