Chamber President Message

When you think of the Winter Lights Parade, the Easter Egg Hunt, or the Play Unplugged program, do you associate them with the chamber of com-merce? Those are only a few of the events our local chamber provides for businesses to involve themselves in our community and for the residents to participate in. The Spanish Fork-Salem Chamber of Commerce is thriving and growing, and I look forward to being part of the growth in 2015.
As a chamber board member for the past five years, having served under five presidents, I’ve witnessed teamwork, vision and growth. We’ve identi-fied issues and service opportunities and created an environment where local businesses can get to know and help one another. As we all embrace the city’s recent and future growth, it’s also crucial to keep downtown Main Street vibrant and thriving.
As the 2015 chamber of commerce president, I would like to encour-age everyone to support our local businesses. Let’s keep our tax dollars in Spanish Fork and Salem. All chamber members are listed in this directory. Please give them your support as they all do so much to give back to this wonderful community.

Clark H. Caras, former director of marketing for the Utah Governor’s Office of Economic Development and public information officer for the Utah Department of Commerce, has been named the new executive direc-tor of the Spanish Fork-Salem Area Chamber of Commerce, replacing Cary Hanks who has accepted a new employment opportunity.
Caras is a native of Payson and at-tended elementary schools in Ben-jamin and Lake Shore before being bused to the “big city” of Spanish Fork for middle, junior high and high school. He went on to earn a bach-elor’s degree in communications from Brigham Young University and, after spending several years working for local newspapers, entered the world
of public relations, working for Utah Valley Regional Medical Center as a public affairs assistant and Geneva Steel as manager of community rela-tions.
He also worked as field director and policy advisor for the Jon Huntsman for Utah Governor campaign.
As he takes on this new challenge, he has a strong sense of returning home. “If there ever was the case of a small town boy returning, then this is most definitely it. But the kink in the works is there really isn’t a small town to return to,” Caras said. “Then, yet again, after spending a few days here back on Spanish Fork Main Street and the business and home ar-teries feeding off the main street, I’m finding more and more the small town

Caras said he can feel the history of past businesses that have operated in the area and the work of families continuing to operate on the foundation that was laid by those busi-nesses. He is honored to be given the op-portunity to come home and help the Spanish Fork-Salem area continue to grow and be a safe place to live and work. He has already signed up his first chamber member - the Caras Ranch - and looks forward to meeting with other businesses.
“I will soon be knocking on your door if you are not yet a member. And I’ll do it because there is a feeling of safety and hometown in this place. So please, as I come around and introduce myself, just know, I won’t be leaving until I thank you for already being a member, or telling you it’s time to join.” he said.

Spanish Fork Mayor’s MessageDear Citizens:There are a lot of good things happening in Spanish Fork. Just look at all
the new business coming into Canyon Creek. Just look around and you can see so much happening everywhere here in our city. What a great time to be a part of it all. I have had many people come up to me and tell what a great place Spanish Fork is to live in.
We had the great honor of being picked by a national survey as the best Utah city to live in. The Chamber of Commerce played a big role in making this happen. I would encourage all to support the chamber and help in any way. The best way is to shop local. This helps all of us by strengthening busi-nesses and boosting our tax base that helps run the city.
This magazine is a wonderful directory that will help you find many busi-nesses, professionals and great craftsmen located in Spanish Fork. We all can find just what we are looking for right here in our town.
I look forward to the exciting things that are coming to our city and meet-ing all of you at our stores, recreational activities and wonderful celebrations. Thank you so much for all that you do in giving of your time to help make Spanish Fork “The Best Place to Live in Utah.” Think Local, Shop Local, Be Local!

Spanish Fork CityTwo Franciscan friars, Silvestre Valez
de Escalante and Francisco Atanasio de Dominguez, were some of the first ex-plorers to pass through the Spanish Fork area, camping somewhere near the pres-ent day city limits on Sept. 23, 1776. Many years later, the name “Spanish Fork” appeared on John C. Fremont’s map of the area published in 1845. The city originally began as an outgrowth of Palmyra, but as the community devel-oped, Palmyra diminished and became a northwest suburb of Spanish Fork. Between 1855 and 1860, settlers from Iceland came to the area, making it the first permanent Icelandic settlement in the United States. The city currently has a population of about 36,000.
The city is home to several large manufacturing facilities including SAPA, Ensign-Bickford, Klune In-

New businesses are springing up throughout the Canyon Creek commercial development in Spanish Fork, with even more expected to open soon and large nationwide retailers eyeing the area for possible expansion.
“We’ll have over a million square feet of (new) retail space built out in the next year or two,” said Spanish Fork Mayor Steve Leifson.
Also known as North Park and located in northeastern Spanish Fork near Costco, the Canyon Creek area has experienced a building boom in recent months. New busi-ness openings have included Good Earth Natural Foods, Culver’s, Cubby’s, Five Guys and the Mattress Firm. Cafe Zupas is expected to open at the end of January and Malawi’s Pizza will be opening in February, Leifson said. A new Walmart store will open around the first of March. The city has approved a site plan for a Chick-fil-A in the area and another building has been approved that will house four businesses.
Leifson said the old Food 4 Less store and its neighbor, the Water Gardens Spanish Fork 8 movie theater, will eventually be demolished and a new Cinemax 10 theater built in the area. Intermountain Health Care plans to build a new hospital in the area as well, a project that should begin within the next three to four years. In the future, the area may attract larger retailers such as Kohl’s and Gord-mans, Leifson said.
“There’s a lot of good things happening here, and we’re excited,” the mayor said.
Development of Canyon Creek began about nine years ago. At the time, Home Depot, Target and Chili’s restau-rant had committed to become tenants. However, there were some problems with early development efforts due to potential wetlands in the area, and by the time those problems were worked out, the economy had experienced a major downturn and the three corporations pulled out of

Spanish Fork Citythe project.
Eventually, Costco announced it was looking at po-tential sites in southern Utah County, and Spanish Fork City aggressively pursued attracting the business to locate within its borders. The city was successful and Costco opened in the Canyon Creek development in October of 2012. Costco’s opening proved to be the event that kicked the area’s development into high gear.
“Once Costco showed up, then everybody said OK, that validates Spanish Fork. This is a place that we all want to be,” Leifson said.
All this development means higher sales tax revenue for the city, money that can be used to support various city programs and potentially even new city facilities. The city could use a new library, a new senior citizens building, a new city building and perhaps a recreation center, and the increased revenue could help Spanish Fork pay for some of those projects, he said.
While he is excited about the new development at Can-yon Creek, Leifson said he wants Spanish Fork residents
to be aware of all the shopping options they have avail-able to them. The city recently received a grant which will pay for a group of architects to study the city’s historic downtown and determine what can be done to upgrade and beautify the area.
“My goal as a mayor is to see all the people in Spanish Fork just stay here and meet all their shopping needs,” he said.
Leifson said his own greatest desire is to see a steak-house locate in the city, adding that the developers assure him they are working on it. Canyon Creek is being devel-oped by Woodbury Corporation and WPI Enterprises.
“The nice thing is that as we’re growing as a city, we still maintain that hometown feel,” Leifson said. “Every-body needs a place to call home, and that’s what we have here.”

Salem CIty Salem CityLocated in southern Utah County, Sa-
lem City lies beneath the majestic moun-tains of the Wasatch mountain range at an elevation of 4,610 feet. The city’s name was chosen to honor Lyman Curtis and the contributions he made to the commu-nity. Curtis was born in Salem, Mass. The city has a population of about 7,000.
The first settlers of Salem City arrived in the early 1950s and were attracted by a large stream in the area as well as the springs that provided water. Settlers constructed dams to contain these water resources and the area is still known as “Pond Town” to this day. The beautiful Salem Pond is a central feature of the city and the location of events such as the Salem Pond Holiday Lights and the Card-board Duct Tape Boat Regatta. The pond is surrounded by city parks and crossed with an arched pedestrian bridge. Arial view of Salem CityContinued on page 18

The largest commercial development in the history of Salem is now underway in the city: Central Utah Clinic broke ground in January for a new facility that will have more than 89,000 square feet in its first phase and plans call for another 150,000 square feet to be built over the next 20 years. The new facility will offer services including an ambulatory surgical center, dialysis center, imaging center, physical therapy, laboratory and pharmacy. Plans also include medical of-fices for orthopedics, internal medicine, family medicine, urology, gastroenterol-ogy, ophthalmology and a specialty suite for rotation of several other specialties. A connected building on the campus will house a 16-bed post-surgical and obser-vation short-term rehabilitation center. Completion is expected within 10 to 12 months.

Last summer, local children were challenged to unplug from their televisions, video games and cell phones and instead go outdoors for their activities. The response was tremendous, with hundreds of children participating in Spanish Fork Salem Play Unplugged, a program sponsored by the Spanish Fork-Salem Chamber of Commerce.
As a result, the chamber will again offer the Play Un-plugged program in 2015 and is now seeking local busi-nesses to participate. Through the program, children are encouraged to explore a variety of outdoor and family-oriented activities such as flying a kite, learning to fish or enjoying a picnic. Businesses can sign up to sponsor indi-vidual activity, and when a child has completed that activity, they can visit the sponsoring business and receive a “Brag Tag” indicating what they did. Brag Tags can be attached to special Play Unplugged Lanyards that will be distributed by
the chamber so program participants can keep track of their progress and brag about it to others. Prizes will be awarded at the end of the program, which will begin in late May and continue until Labor Day.
In 2014, the chamber handed out more than 12,000 lan-yards and businesses gave away a total of more than 96,000 Brag Tags.
“It was amazing to us how many people participated and actually came by the store to get their Brag Tags,” said Kevin Dunn, owner of the Spanish Fork Big O Tires and
Play Unplugged program planned again after having successful first year
Spanish Fork/Salem Play UnpluggedService Center. Big O’s sponsored activity was taking a scenic drive up a canyon, and Dunn said his business gave about 1,000 Brag Tags away.
The program was a great experi-ence for his business and for the community, Dunn said. It associated his business with something positive while also encouraging families to spend time together. “Those are the kind of feel-good things we want to be associated with and so we were pleased to be part of it,” he said, add-ing that Big O would be participating in the Play Unplugged program again this year.
“Our greatest thing that we no-ticed was the number of people that walked into the bank that did not even know we were here,” said

Lorraine Dedrickson, vice president and branch operations manager for the Bank of American Fork’s Spanish Fork branch. Bank of American Fork handed out card-board pigs to children and encouraged them to take a picture of themselves with the pig, named Seymore, in a park of some kind. When the children returned, their pictures were hung up on the wall and they received their Brag Tags.
“We felt like it was a great way to gener-ate people coming in and seeing who we were and to kind of get to know the youth of the community,” Dedrickson said. “It created a good hometown atmosphere, and we are a community bank and so we feel like the community is probably one of the most important things that we can support.” Bank of American Fork gave out about 600 Brag Tags last year and plans on participating again this year.
The chamber is currently seeking businesses willing to
sponsor a Play Unplugged activity. To sign up, contact the Spanish Fork Salem-Area Chamber of Commerce at (801) 798-8352.

Since its opening in October of 2012, Spanish Fork’s Costco has seen strong growth in membership and sales. Now, just a few years into its operation in the community, the store’s involvement in civic service and com-mitment to customer satisfaction have led to its being named the Spanish Fork-Salem Area Chamber of Com-merce’s 2015 Business of the Year.
“I’ve been with Costco for almost 27 years and I honestly feel like the best members we’ve ever had have been in this community,” said Gary Haynes, assistant general manager of the Spanish Fork Costco store.
After its opening, sales started off slightly stronger than anticipated, and the store’s second year saw increasing growth. Now in its third fiscal year, the
Spanish Fork Costco is expe-riencing significant growth, with sales expected to be much higher than projected.
Haynes said he felt the cham-ber award recognized Costco for providing quality goods and services at low prices to the community as well as the excellent way it treats its em-ployees. “We really feel that the community is starting to understand the value of Costco,” he said.
In addition to its retail offerings, Costco of Spanish Fork is a big sup-porter of a variety of civic causes. Through its Costco reading program, the store allows employees to visit a local school once a week to spend time reading with students and assisting them with classwork. The store also
has a program through which it do-nates about 400 backpacks each year to a school in Nebo School District which has a high percentage of low-income students enrolled.
Items that are returned that can-not be resold but are still usable are donated to local organizations such as homeless shelters. Employees are encouraged to donate to charitable groups through an annual United Way campaign. Also, the store hosts an open house once a year called Heroes Day during which it recognizes mem-bers of local police and fire depart-ments as well as the military. A similar event is held each year to honor local teachers.
Haynes said in the future, he wants to see the store continue to be involved in the community and contribute to the success of local businesses as well. When the Spanish Fork store first opened, there were concerns that it would harm local businesses, but the store has instead acted as a magnet for business as shown by the large amount of commercial development that is now underway nearby.
In addition, Haynes said he hopes to see Costco members become more familiar with the wide variety of prod-ucts and services Costco offers, which range from car insurance to identity protection and home loan financ-ing. “We also want to continue to be adaptable and adjust to the needs of the community,” he said.

In difficult economic times, many people see home ownership as out of reach. Fortunately, there are many options to consider. This includes the new trend of “micro-homes”, such as those constructed by Life Homes, a company based in Provo, Utah.
Micro-homes have many advantages. They offer excellent pricing per square foot, low monthly payments, the option to expand and customize the home easily, and the ability to be self-sustaining.
One of the greatest advantages to a mi-cro-home is the flexibility they provide. Life Homes start out with a single unit that is 8 ½ feet wide, 13 feet tall, 18 feet long. All homes contain a kitchen, living room, a full bath and a loft bedroom.
The homes are made with interchangeable parts, which means that they can be easily ex-panded as the need arises. Two or more units can be built together, and new stories can be added to the top of the home as needed. Homes can be built to be portable, so that you do not have to buy land, or can be set up permanently on a foundation.
These homes can also be constructed to be “off the grid”, meaning that they sustain them-selves. They can be equiped with solar panels on the roof to generate enough electricity, and can have a roof system to collect and purify rainwater. Any location with at least 8 inches
of rain a year will provide enough water for a family of four. There is an optional greenhouse extension, which can provide a year-round indoor garden.
The houses can also be built with its own septic system. All of these factors combine to create a money-saving, self-sustaining lifestyle.
Finally, the price range makes these homes incredibly affordable. Pricing starts at around $19,000, which means that with payments of around $400/month, an owner could pay it off in only 4-7 years, instead of the typical 15 to 30.

Since opening his State Farm insurance office in De-cember of 2012, State Farm agent Colt Sampson has made community involvement one of his highest priorities. As a result, Sampson’s activities since his doors opened have in-cluded providing free movie days for local residents, raising money for Sub for Santa, helping promote Spanish Fork-Salem Area Chamber of Commerce activities and driving around town in a classic car spreading birthday wishes to local business’s employees.
“The bottom line is, you need to know the people you serve,” Sampson said. “In a relationship, service-type busi-ness, the better you understand the people you work with, the better you can serve them, and you can help them get what they want.”
Originally from Pleasant Grove, Sampson attended the University of Utah where he played on the football team for four years. He went on to get an MBA degree at Southern Utah University in Cedar City, where he was introduced to State Farm by an agent in that area. He eventually decided to make State Farm his career and opened his office at 642
Kirby Lane in Spanish Fork. He and his family are now Spanish Fork residents.
“What I loved most about it was an opportunity to start your own business, and I really like the philosophy that you kind of control your own destiny with how hard you work,” Sampson said. “I like being able to develop a plan and then execute the plan. I couldn’t have asked for a better place to start a business and raise a family.”
As an independent contractor, Sampson is able to make decisions on how he will market his business and be involved in his community. During the 2012 Christmas season, Sampson decided to rent out three movie theaters at the Water Gardens Spanish 8 for an evening and invite customers and friends to enjoy movies for free. “I had just opened so I wanted to meet people,” Sampson said. The event was so successful that his office repeated and ex-panded the event in both 2013 and 2014. With a desire to help the community even more, the State Farm office added a fundraiser to the event to raise money for Sub for Santa, and in 2014 more than 3,000 people attended the event and $960 was raised to help local families. Dozens of other local

businesses have assisted in this event, he said, through helping promote the event and providing items for the fundraiser.
Sampson can occasionally be seen cruising around the city in a classic 1971 MGB convertible with the State Farm Birthday Bear (also known as Brendan Holmes, marketing manager for the Spanish Fork State Farm office). The pair visit local businesses and offices to wish employees a happy birthday and deliv-er a treat. “We wanted to create a program where we get to know our neighbors and get to know the community,” Sampson said. He recruited Holmes to fill the bear suit, and now employees having a birthday get their picture taken with the bear. The pictures are then posted on the State Farm office’s Facebook page.
As a supporter of the local chamber of commerce, Sampson was part of a committee that visited local elementary schools last year to promote Play Unplugged, a program through which local children participated in various out-door activities and then visited local businesses to obtain “brag tags” announc-ing the activities they had completed.
Having only been in business in Spanish Fork for two years, Sampson said he feels like his office has only just begun to tap its potential for being involved in fun activities in the area. “What I love about being involved in the commu-nity is there will always be new opportunities as the community evolves and as you get to know more and more people,” he said. He also expressed gratitude for his team - Holmes, Alex Kitterman, Tara Ellis and Esteban Zapata - who have helped grow his business.

Heathre Hone has always loved animals. This love led her to found the Utah Valley Animal Rescue in 2014, a ser-vice through which she works to save animals and see them adopted by local families.
“There’s a billion organizations out there to help chil-dren, as there should be, but there’s not that many for animals,” Hone said. “I’ve always felt like my animals are like my kids, they’re family members to me. A lot of people don’t feel that way, but I do, and luckily my husband does too.”
Hone married Blaine Hone in 2004 and the couple now live on a farm in Lake Shore where they take care of a vari-ety of livestock. They’ve cared for stray animals that show up on their doorstep as well. “The lost ones seem to find us,” she said. “I swear they just show up.”
Before moving to her current home, Hone lived in Salt Lake City where she and her daughter would take their Rottweiler dogs - which were certified therapy animals - to visit children in the hospital and to sit with children as they spent reading time at the library.
After moving to Lake Shore, Hone began volunteering at the South Utah Valley Animal Shelter where she helped with events such as rabies and licensing clinics. She also organized the Celebrate Your Pet event, which served as an opportunity for people to visit the shelter and learn about its services while enjoying a variety of demonstrations and activities.
About two years ago, she started working with the Trap-Neuter-Return program through which feral cats are caught, then spayed or neutered and finally returned to the area where they were caught. Working with her neighbors and others in the southern Utah County area, Hone has caught more than 125 cats and had them spayed or neutered through this program.
Even with all her service, Hone still wanted to do more to help animals. This desire led her to start her own animal rescue, which officially received its nonprofit status in July of 2014. “This is kind of the next step I guess,” she said. She still works closely with the South Utah Valley Animal Shelter; its staff members call her when they have more animals than they can take care of. If the animals are not

Community Action Awardadopted or picked up by an animal rescue organization, they have to be euthanized. “So rescues are vital to shelters,” she said. When animals enter Hone’s care, they stay until they are adopted. Twice a month, she takes animals to the PetSmart store in American Fork where they are made available for adoption.
Fortunately, the Hones have plenty of room at their farm for their furry guests. Her husband even built a “cat playpen” that’s insulated against the cold so their cats can have a place to climb and stay warm during the winter.
Hone has received a few donations for her rescue, but most of the money now spent comes from her own pocket. Now as a nonprofit, donations to the rescue are tax-deductible, and Hone is seeking financial help from the community. In addition to dona-tions, the organization could also use more volunteers to help in its efforts, including foster families who could host animals until they can be adopted out.
The best thing about animals, Hone said, is their unconditional love. “They have no conditions on anything. They don’t care how rich you are, they don’t care how poor you are. They just want to be with somebody,” she said.

Wendy OsborneFive years ago, Wendy Osborne had a regular job and
wasn’t expecting her life to experience a dramatic change. Then one day she was reading the New Testament in the Bible and came across the story of a woman named Tabitha who was “full of good works” and raised from the dead by Peter after the people mourned her passing and showed him the clothing she had made for them.
It was then that she was inspired to quit her job and start a food pantry for people in need.
“I was praying and meditating on a particular scripture and God just put it in my heart, this is what I want you to do,” Osborne said. She left her job and in June of 2010 began Tabitha’s Way, a nonprofit, mercy-based Christian ministry that provides food and supplies such as clothing and baby care items to anyone in need in the community. People coming to Tabitha’s Way for help are mainly from cities in southern Utah County; in the last year, the ministry has gone from providing food for 2,000 people a month to 5,000 people per month.
At first, Osborne questioned how she was going to even
afford rent for a building, let alone run a food pantry. “Every single step along the way has really been God’s divine instruction,” she said. “It’s always a surprise to see how he pulls us all together.”
Currently located at 140 N. Main in Spanish Fork, Tabitha’s Way was originally opened in a small location across the street behind Stone Drug. The timing of its open-ing could not have been better, as the ministry opened just as the recession began hitting the country. The food pantry was always the major focus, but Osborne also wanted to have a small thrift store. This goal was boosted when Tabitha’s Way received all the clothing from another thrift store in Price that went out of business.
Tabitha’s Way now takes donations of clothing and has a small store where people can buy quality items at a low cost. The ministry also works with agencies such as Nebo School District, the Utah Department of Workforce Services and local churches who provide referrals and also give out cloth-ing vouchers that can be used in lieu of money to purchase items.
People who need food can visit the ministry and receive

items from its food pantry. People in the community can donate food to the pantry, and Tabitha’s Way has a group of volunteers that go to different locations daily and pick up donations such as bread, milk, produce and other items. Scouting, church and school groups provide donations through food drives, and the Utah Food Bank and Commu-nity Action Services provide regular deliveries of food items.
From the beginning, Osborne was emphatic about not relying on government funding for Tabitha’s Way. The orga-nization applies for grants but does not use any of the money for operational expenses. To help cover costs, Osborne’s husband Jody started the Recycle to Feed Program, through which clothing donated to Tabitha’s Way is sold to recy-clers. One hundred bins have recently been placed in Utah Valley communities where residents can donate clothing to Tabitha’s Way, and Osborne said she expects another 100 to be placed within the next year.
The work is physically exhausting, as Tabitha’s Way staff members deal with the thousands of pounds of clothing and food that are donated. Ultimately, however, it’s very reward-ing work; Osborne said she feels truly honored and humbled as she watches the work being done and the miracles that
occur.“I’m always astonished at how well Tabitha’s is supported
and how wonderful people are and that people just have great hearts and want to give and love people,” she said. “I feel like someone that gets to live a fairy tale life.”
The Tabitha’s Way thrift store is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The food pantry is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturdays. The ministry is always seeking volunteers; those interested can sign up at tabithasway.org.

Annual Golf Tournament
36
More than 20 years ago, the Spanish Fork-Salem Area Chamber of Commerce teamed up with the Spanish Fork Rotary Club and the Nebo Foundation to provide scholar-ships for local high school seniors. Since then, through events such as the annual Scholarship Pro-Am Celebrity Golf Tournament and silent auctions, these organizations have been able to assist hundreds of students in gaining higher education.
The golf tournament is hosted by the chamber and the Rotary Club each May at the Spanish Oaks Golf Course. Local businesses and individuals can sponsor teams, and all proceeds are used for scholarships. In 2014, 25 four-person teams participated in the Pro-Am.
The tournament’s mission statement is: “Enthusiastically advance academic and career training for high school stu-dents by sponsoring activities and programs which generate critical scholarship funding.”
Money for scholarships is also raised through silent auc-tions held during parent/teacher conference nights at Span-ish Fork, Maple Mountain and Spanish Fork high schools. Local businesses and individuals donate goods and services to be auctioned to the public, with all the money going to
scholarships along with the proceeds from the golf tourna-ment.
When the scholarship fund-raising work began, a dona-tion made toward the effort was invested in the Nebo Foun-dation, a nonprofit organization that manages donations to Nebo School District students. Interest from that investment is also added to the money used for scholarships each year.
Through all these efforts, thousands of dollars in scholar-ships are distributed to high school seniors each year. Each scholarship is $1,000 and in 2014, $28,000 in scholarship money was awarded. Students at Spanish Fork, Maple Mountain, Salem Hills, Landmark and Legacy high schools are eligible to apply.

The Women in Business South Utah County group was or-ganized in January of 2013 to provide a venue where business-women could meet and have an opportunity to network with each other. The group is open to anyone, but it mainly draws members from the communities extending from Springville to Santaquin. Business owners and employees are welcome, including those who have home-based businesses. The group operates under the umbrella of the Spanish Fork-Salem Chamber of Commerce.
The group meets on the last Thursday of most months; in No-vember, the group meets on the Thursday before Thanksgiving, and there is no meeting in December. Called Business Connection Luncheons, these meetings provide networking opportunities and also feature guest speakers who discuss business-related topics. The organization has also been involved in service, having raised money for charities. Randi Kaufman, president of WIBSUC and office assistant for the Spanish Fork chamber, said the need for the business group became apparent as more and more women became involved in the chamber.
“We wanted to provide a support group and an educational group and an opportunity for networking,” Kaufman said.

Annual Sidewalk Sales Each year during Spanish Fork City’s Fiesta
Days celebration in July, the Spanish Fork-Salem Chamber of Commerce sponsors sidewalk sales along the city’s Main Street. Although the event happens on Main Street, all businesses in the city are invited to participate. The chamber assigns locations to each business and they are invited to sell their products to the crowds of people that are traditionally drawn to the downtown area by the various Fiesta Days activities such as the parade and carnival.
Sidewalk sales have been a tradition in Span-ish Fork for many years and the chamber spon-sors them as part of its efforts to help businesses promote themselves in the community.
Easter Egg Hunt
38
Thousands of children line up at the Spanish Fork Sports Park each spring for their chance to find eggs filled with candy and prizes as part of the Spanish Fork-Salem Area Chamber of Commerce Easter Egg Hunt. The event, which is held on the Saturday before Easter at 9 a.m., has become an annual tradition in Spanish Fork, with between 3,000 and 5,000 children ranging in age from infants to 10 years old participating each year.
As part of the hunt, the lawn at the sports park is strewn with between 10,000 and 15,000 plastic eggs. Each egg contains a piece of candy and a coupon with either an of-fer from a local business or an opportunity to redeem the coupon for a prize at the hunt. The coupons for local busi-nesses offer deals such as free kids’ meals, tires, car washes, drinks, ice cream cones and children’s hair cuts.
While this event has a great deal of support through donations of funds and prizes, many individuals in the com-munity contribute to the Easter Egg Hunt through donating their time. After-school 4-H clubs in several Spanish Fork elementary schools have helped fill the thousands of eggs as a service project, and other groups including the Span-
ish Fork Youth City Council, Venture Crew 1532, and the Maple Mountain High School FFA have helped assemble the Easter baskets and scatter the eggs the morning of the hunt.

Every Saturday from midsummer to November, a park-ing lot in Spanish Fork is transformed into a marketplace for the seasonal bounty of local farms with sponsorship and oversight provided by the Spanish Fork-Salem Area Chamber of Commerce.
For the last five years, the chamber has run the Span-ish Fork Farmers Market, an event that attracts about 40 vendors each week selling fruits, vegetables, honey, herbs and other fresh food items. The market is unique in that it is one of the few farmers markets operating in Utah that does not also offer craft items, making it a destination for people specifically looking to obtain fresh, locally grown produce.
The market has been operating in Spanish Fork for about 26 years, but it lacked formal organization as it grew in size. Vendors wanted a way to reserve booth space without having to arrive in the early hours of the morning to claim their area. Eventually, the city and the vendors approached the chamber of commerce for help, and the chamber’s board of directors agreed to have the chamber begin managing the event.
With the chamber’s help, vendors are now able to reserve booth space for the entire season or on a week-to-week basis. The chamber pro-vides personnel for the event each week to help vendors find their booth spots and assist shoppers who have questions. Vendors are assessed booth fees which pay for the personnel and amenities like portable restrooms, but the majority of the booth fees has gone towards advertising. Ads have been placed in local newspapers, on the Internet, on SFCN Channel 17 and on billboards. Hundreds of people now attend the market each week.
The market generally starts near the end of July and continues each Saturday through the first weekend of November. It is held in the parking lot immediately west of the Spanish Fork city office building at 40 S. Main. The city allows the market to use the parking lot space free of charge.
Harvest Moon Hurrah
40
Each September, the Spanish Fork Arts Council sponsors the city’s Harvest Moon Hurrah, an event celebrating the harvest season and the arts. Held in Spanish Fork’s Library Park at Center and Main streets, the Harvest Moon Hurrah includes harvest-related games, crafts and activities as well as live music performances.
As part of the activities, the Spanish Fork-Salem Area Chamber of Commerce offers a booth where children can make jack-o-lanterns to take home. This activity is provided free of charge through the sponsorship of the chamber’s platinum mem-bers and the generosity of Randy Gordon Farms in Lake Shore, which donates the pumpkins used at the event.
Each year, the pumpkins are delivered to mem-bers of the Maple Mountain High School FFA who wash all the pumpkins, transport them to the chamber booth at the Harvest Moon Hurrah and help distribute them to the children. A variety of adhesive jack-o-lantern faces made of foam are provided by the chamber for the children to stick onto their pumpkins.
Volunteers from businesses and organizations such as
Circle V Meat Co., SIC Tattooing, the Spanish Fork Youth City Council and the Maple Mountain FFA all help staff the booth to provide assistance to the children.

Each October, the Spanish Fork-Salem Area Chamber of Commerce sponsors the Scarecrow Contest, a competition encouraging local businesses and individuals to design their most creative scarecrow and put it up for display in the com-munity. Through the contest, 20 to 30 scarecrows are set up along Spanish Fork’s Main Street in the area between Center Street and 400 North, adding fun decorations to the historic downtown area during the Halloween season.
The contest has three categories for entries from adults, children and businesses. The $10 fee from each entry is pooled with additional funds from the chamber to provide cash prizes for the winners in each category. Pieces of rebar are placed in the flower beds lining Main Street and entrants affix their scarecrows to these foundations. The scarecrows are left on display throughout October, and a panel of judges visits them during the week before Halloween to select the winners. The public can also cast votes for their favorite scarecrows online and at the Spanish Fork city building, with the winner declared the recipient of the People’s Choice Award.
A separate and similar Scarecrow Contest is held each year in Salem for residents and businesses in that community.
In addition to the Scarecrow Contest, the chamber is also involved each October in the annual Main Street Trick-or-Treat event in Spanish Fork and the Salem Trunk-or-Treat event. The Spanish Fork event is held on the Saturday before Hallow-een from 1 to 3 p.m. on Main Street between Center Street and 400 North. As part of the event, businesses are invited to set up a table on Main Street and hand out candy to trick-or-treaters. Thousands of children partici-pate in this event each year.
The Salem Trunk or Treat also invites businesses to give candy to trick-or-treaters, but the Salem event is held in a parking lot and candy passed out from the trunks of cars. It is also a popular annual event. Both the Salem and Spanish Fork events provide businesses with an opportunity to get their names out to the community and familiarize the public with the services or products they provide.

On the Friday evening after Thanksgiving each year, Main Street in Spanish Fork is lit up with fes-tive floats and wagons as part of the Winter Lights Parade, an event sponsored annually by the Spanish Fork-Salem Area Chamber of Commerce.
Entry into this popular parade is free and open to all, but all entries must be lit in some fashion for the nighttime event. The Winter Lights Parade begins at 7 p.m. at 900 N. Main Street and proceeds south to 100 South before traveling around the city park and ending on Center Street at 100 East.
Businesses, families and other groups participate in the parade each year, with the parade attracting entries such as hay wagons, city floats, horse riding clubs and marching bands. Musical groups also participate, including Christmas carolers, and the parade ends with a visit from Santa Claus who rides through the city on his sleigh. In 2013, the lights parade had about 42 entries.
Each year, the Brad Ford Award for Creative Excellence is awarded to one entry chosen by the Carol and Doug Ford Family. The winner receives a traveling trophy to display
for a year at their place of business. In 2014, the winner was Tony’s Window Cleaning with their antler rendition of a snowman.
The chamber of commerce sponsors the parade as a com-munity service, which allows people to participate with no entry fee. The parade is shown live on SFCN Channel 17.

Dr. Jared Young
We do more than just sell hearing aids. We work with local physicians for testing hearing, local companies for protecting ears and hearing, local
musicians for providing the best quality of sound while performing, and athletes so they can enjoy music while they run or work out.
Call today to make your appointment and you will see why our patients love us and refer their friends and family.
