Creativity and innovation are inherent to designer, Beate

Allard. “I look at an object and I envision its transformation

into a finished product. I adore materials and fabric and fell

in love with silk at age 14.

I am a self-taught fashion designer and I am very passionate

about my work. It gives me pleasure and energy. I can be

awoken at night by an idea and I will have the urge to start

working on it immediately through to its completion.”

The majority of Schwari materials are sourced in Tanzania,

using only local artisans to undertake the work - ethical

manufacturing being at the heart of the Schwari ethos.

In 2009, Beate opened the

doors to her fashion line,

Schwari. At Schwari, her

use of hand dyed fabrics,

unique leather pieces,

along with vibrant colours

and intricate beading

inspired by the Maasai

tribal women has become

the label's unique signature.

Schwari provides jobs with above

average pay, clean and safe working

conditions, career development

opportunities, as well as special

considerations and accessibility

options for disabled artists and

parents who benefit from working

from home or lack transportation or

mobility. For the beading

components, Beate engages village

Maasai women who otherwise would

not have the opportunity to provide

for themselves financially – limiting

their empowerment within the

traditional community.

Wildly popular with the local market and visitors lucky

enough to pass through Arusha on safari, Schwari

handbags, accessories, clothing and shoes have only been

available in Tanzania. Thanks to word of mouth and

critical acclaim from fashion showcases, Schwari is quickly

making its way into premier boutiques across the country,

and opening branded outlets in strategic locations.

The 2015 Summer Collection is inspired by the spice island of

Zanzibar with wispy, hand-dyed fabrics, bold colours, vibrant

kitenge, summer suede, and signature Schwari beading.
