SAFE ROUTES TO SCHOOL GRANT PROGRAMS

Status Report to the Washington State Legislature Introduction The Washington State Department of Transportation is pleased to present this status report for the Pedestrian and Bicycle and Safe Routes to School programs. These programs provide funding for facilities that improve pedestrian and bicycle safety and mobility. They help to further several of WSDOT’s strategic goals, through deliberate investments that advance modal integration and enhance community engagement through stakeholder collaboration. These programs provide funding to cities, counties, tribal nations, state agencies, and other public agencies to support pedestrian and bicycle projects within their respective communities. Pedestrian and Bicycle Program – Status and Past Performance The purpose of the Pedestrian and Bicycle Program is to improve the transportation system to enhance safety and mobility for people who chose to walk and bike. Since the program was created in 2005, (ESSB 6091), almost $55 million has been made available to 65 agencies for 132 projects across the state. That includes $10 million in state funds awarded to 29 projects for the 2015-2017 biennium. Eighty four percent of projects awarded in the first four cycles have been completed. To date, 76 projects have been completed and 2 were cancelled.

The table below includes a list of Pedestrian and Bicycle Program projects that are completed, underway and/or approved for funding. It does not include closed projects reported in previous reports. For more detailed information about these and other state and federal transportation projects administered by WSDOT Local Programs visit the WSDOT Local Programs Project Status Dashboard. If you would like more information about the program or to view previous reports go to the Pedestrian and Bicycle Program Funding website. The next call for projects is being planned for early 2016.
