About the EventThe 2015 NEDC Members’ Meeting is a free members only forum that will showcase the collective impact of knowledge building and research in eating disorders.

Members’ Meetings are convened by the National Eating Disorders Collaboration (NEDC) to enable our diverse and invaluable membership to come together and contribute, share knowledge, discuss treatment, recovery and current issues in the eating disorders sector, and learn about new initiatives in evidence-based research and treatment from eating disorders experts.

The 2015 Meeting is being held in Canberra, ACT. Attendees can expect to:

• Explore opportunities for collaboration with the nation-wide eating disorders workforce

• Engage with experts in emerging methodologies in research, treatment and recovery

• Build intersectoral and interdisciplinary coordination and evidence sharing on eating disorders

• Engage with NEDC plans and projects including providing suggestions, requests and recommendations

• Access opportunities for professional networking

The meeting is to be held at The National Convention Centre, 31 Constitution Avenue, Canberra, ACT 2601.

All attendees will receive a Members’ Pack including a suite of evidence based resources.

11.00am Plenary Q&A Following on from our opening address and keynotes, the morning plenary will give attendees a unique opportunity to engage with the experts in a panel-style discussion on prevention, early intervention and emerging initiatives in the sector.

Midday Stream OneThe Service Implementation Guide This session will present a nation-wide focus on localised service delivery and the practical implementation of the NEDC’s principles, models and practice guidelines.

Midday Stream TwoDoing No Harm: The shared benefits of responsible health messaging This session examines the possibilities when collaboration in health messaging is prioritised across multiple food and diet related industries. Current practices in health messaging and some examples of mutually positive health and weight based community messages will be workshopped.

Midday/Afternoon Stream The Lived Experience Workshop: the importance of story in recovery and participation This session is an interactive workshop for people who have recovered from an eating disorder and those who work to support people through recovery and prevent the risk of recurrence. The session will also be relevant to people responsible for consumer participation and representation activities in health services. This stream presents the outcomes of a co-developed resource on safe, effective communication about eating disorder recovery “Stories from Experience”. This session runs from 12.00pm-3.15pm

2.00pm Afternoon Breakout Sessions

Afternoon Stream OneCore Business: Placing eating disorders on the frontline of workforce training and developmentThis stream presents key findings and recommendations from the NEDC Workforce Development Blueprint. Presentations will focus on national training initiatives, emerging treatment methodologies, research and development of full continuum of care training for frontline, primary health care and allied health workforces for best practice in treatment management of patients with eating disorders.

Afternoon Stream Two Eating Disorders and Young People: Harnessing technology for early interventionThis session will test-drive new approaches to accessing the youth audience and empowering them to seek help for eating disorders.

About the Keynote SpeakersDr. Susan Paxton is a Professor in the School of Psychology and Public Health at La Trobe University with a longstanding interest in body image, disordered eating and clinical eating disorders. She has been involved in the NEDC since its inception and was a co-chair of the Prevention and Early Intervention Working Group. She has been recognised for her work by being awarded the 2013 Academy for Eating Disorders Leadership Award for Research. In addition, she has been President of the Academy for Eating Disorders as well as the Australian and New Zealand Academy for Eating Disorders. Susan is a Director of the Butterfly Foundation.

Dr. Sarah Maguire has a doctorate of clinical psychology and PhD from the University of Sydney and is the current Statewide Coordinator for Eating Disorders, reporting to the NSW Ministry for Health, advising on policy and service planning for NSW. Dr Maguire heads the team at the Centre for Eating and Dieting Disorders (CEDD) – a Sydney-based academic and service support centre. Dr Maguire is a member of the Academy of Eating Disorders (AED) and has served on their scientific program committee from 2012-2014. She is also a past member of the Mental Health Standing Committee for the NEDC reporting to the Federal government.

What to Expect Plenary Sessions are designed to provide either an in depth lecture-style overview on the topic, or allow for forum, Q&A style engagement for the collective attendees. Plenary sessions are delivered and facilitated by NEDC Steering Committee members.

Workshops are targeted, topical sessions that are driven to inform on professional, research or treatment issues and focussed member input can be contributed. Workshops are facilitated and delivered by a Steering Committee Member, an external subject-matter expert, or both.
