Food and beverage manufacturing is an important component of the ASEAN economy:

ASEAN ripe for F&B investments

REGIONAL strength and developments are making Southeast Asia even more attractive for Food & Beverage industry investments and expansion, as the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) has now been virtually established. The AEC creates a single market and production base in 2015, with a free flow of goods, services, skilled labor, investments and capital for the 10-nation bloc with a population of 600 million.

Foreign direct investments in the ASEAN 6 – Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Viet Nam – exceeded FDI in China in 2013, in large part due to demographics and lower labor cost. This shift will not be detrimental to China, however, owing to reduced tariffs on 90% of traded goods between the world’s largest economy and the ASEAN.

Large-scale shift in consumer spending on value-added products, population growth, booming retail industry, changing lifestyles, economic prosperity and increased consumption of durable and nondurable goods are factors driving growth in the region. By 2017, the retail sales in the ASEAN-6 packaged food market is estimated to reach over $73 billion (Euromonitor). High growth products in the forecast include snack bars, canned/preserved food, dried, chilled and frozen processed food, ready meals, meal replacement, ice cream, bakery items, sweet and savory snacks, pasta and soup.

Thailand and Indonesia will be among the largest buyers of food processing machinery, global sales of which is expected to climb 7.3% per year to $53.3 billion in 2016 and the Asia-Pacific region recording the fastest demand gains (Freedonia). Bakery and pasta machinery will remain the largest segment and post the highest value gains.The greatest potential of packaging machinery growth is in the Southeast Asian market, where more than half of packaging machinery is used in the food and beverage industries. Asia-Pacific, including SEA, represents the largest and the fastest growing market worldwide with a CAGR of 8.4% to 2020, when it is forecast to reach $58.9 billion (Global Industry Analysts).Among packaging materials, flexible packaging will emerge as the most dynamic and innovative of packaging formats. The market in SEA has been growing by 10%, compared to around 5% per annum globally (PCI Films Consulting).Among ingredients, Rabobank expects dairy consumption across ASEAN-6 to grow by 2.4% per year through to 2020, which would require an extra 3 billion liters of milk primarily from exporters, who would reap the benefits of the huge commercial opportunity that exists for the dairy industry across the region.

Trade Journals are the most effective media to build your company’s brand image

Purchasers in the manufacturing sector have more avenues to obtain information due to our multiple media environment. The buying process of purchasers is continuous including information search, information input, and processing to determine the final purchasing decision. In order to understand the influence of different media types on brand image and purchase intention, a recent study measured the important role of multiple media (trade magazines, industry websites, industry E-newsletters, and conferences).

The study collected data by conducting an Internet survey in China, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Singapore, Vietnam and the Philippines. Responses from 302 completed questionnaires were analyzed.

The conclusions of the study were as follows:

The media that is used, the information source & its trust worthiness play a significant role on the brand image. Simply put, if the medium is trusted, so is the brand being promoted.

A c o m p a n y ’s b r a n d i m a g e h a s t h e m o s t significant influence on purchase intentions in the manufacturing sector.

Trade magazines and industry websites have the most significant influence on creating a company’s brand image. Other effective marketing tools are conferences.
