HISTORY1986 Kestrel is the first in the industry to introduce bladder-molded monocoque carbon structures.

1987 Kestrel introduces the world’s first all-carbon composite bike frame: the Kestrel 4000.

2010 Kestrel re-introduces the 4000 triathlon/time trial model.

2011 Kestrel signs Ironman Champion Andy Potts, who wins numerous short and long-course titles aboard his 4000. Members of the GEOX-TMC professional cycling team, including 2009 Giro d’Italia Champion Denis Menchov and 2008 Tour de France Winner Carlos Sastre, use Kestrel as their time trial bike in major international ProTour events - including the Vuelta a Espana, where they helped teammate Juan Jose Cobo win his first grand tour.

2012 The new Kestrel RT1000 - a bike designed for the endurance road rider - hits the market, and the Kestrel 4000 becomes the official TT bike of Champion System, the first ever professional continental cycling team based out of Asia. Cameron Dye is named 2012 Non-Olympic/ITU Athlete of the Year by USA Triathlon, after his career-best, six-win season aboard his 4000 - which also earned him the 2012 Race to the Toyota Cup series title.

2013 Kestrel launches its brand-new road race bike, the Legend — the lightest frame Kestrel has ever produced.

CARBON IS THE FIBER OF OUR DNALike all living organisms, Kestrel has a genetic code, a DNA that is at the core of everything we do. We focus on four critical elements when we design our award- winning bikes: fit, material, testing, and athletes.

FIT It’s all about harmony between rider and machine. We don’t use “open molds” on any of our framesets, forks, or components. Using our own molds allows for total design and performance integration. The Kestrel design process begins with determining what body position will help our riders perform at their best. Kestrel’s road and tri geometries have been refined over two decades with input from athletes and fit experts throughout the industry, and our geometries are designed to fit a wide range of customers: weekend riders to full-time pros.

MATERIAL Carbon is the backbone of every Kestrel - it has been since 1986. Kestrel uses two grades of carbon: 700K & 800K. The 700K is all muscle and is utilized in high-stress areas to reduce flex. And the 800K adds finesse; the lighter of the two, it’s utilized in lower stress areas to achieve the lightest possible overall frame weight. Each model employs a unique blend of these two fibers to create a powerful yet lightweight bike.

TESTING Kestrels aren’t just tested in the wind tunnel; they are designed in the wind tunnel. That means if certain standards aren’t reached, it’s back to the drawing board. In facilities like the A2 Wind Tunnel in Charlotte, NC, the numbers don’t lie.

We use extensive 3-D solid model computer drawings to produce full-scale prototypes, which we meticulously review and evaluate to search for every possible tenth of a second advantage. Testing begins at 0° yaw and goes up to 30°. Wind speeds are set at 10, 20, and 30 MPH. And unlike most companies, we test more than just the bike; we put a rider on the bike, as well as different wheels, bars, and parts - all in an effort to create the best possible package for each Kestrel frameset. Once the aerodynamics are nailed down, we simulate the most arduous rid-ing conditions so we can refine material lay-ups and structural shapes to optimize stiffness and control.

ATHLETES Kestrel has always been about positioning itself at the top of the sport of triathlon, and that means working with athletes in the upper echelons of the sport. From the early days when 2-time Ironman World Champion Chris McCormack rode Kestrel’s Airfoil to victory to our cur-rent Race to the Toyota Cup Champion Andy Potts - who tallied a remarkable 7 victories in his first year with the brand - Kestrel’s partnership with world-class athletes continues to inspire us to make better bikes. After all, it’s in our DNA.

MATERIAL & DESIGN GLOSSARY800K CARBON WEAVE has a lower tensile strength than 700K but is not as heavy. 800K is used to reduce weight in the low-stress areas of Kestrel’s frames.

700K CARBON WEAVE has a higher tensile strength than 800K and is slightly heavier. 700K is used in high-stress areas of Kestrel’s frames.

ENHANCED MODULUS HYBRID (EMH) Kestrel’s non-SL frames now fea-ture our exclusive Enhanced Modulus Hy-brid, a mix of intermediate-modulus fibers (700K) and high-modulus fibers (800K) that provide increased performance and lower weight at an incredible value.

ENHANCED MODULUS SYSTEM (EMS) Kestrel’s line of professional quality components began in 1989 with the devel-opment of our patented Kestrel EMS forks and seat posts.

FLUID DESIGN (FD) defines Kestrel engineering: the continuous flow of long filament fibers, the fluid lines of modular monocoque frames, and in the case of our aero offerings, the airfoil tubes and frame sections that provide a smooth and fluid ride that allows for full power to the pedals.

“K” is short for ksi (“kilo-pound [force] per square inch”), which denotes the material’s tensile strength or the force required to pull the material to its breaking point.

“PRE-PREG” means that Kestrel’s carbon is pre-impregnated with a proprietary, toughened thermoset resin that reduces voids in the integrity structure of the car-bon sheeting after baking, resulting in an overall lighter frame.

PROPRIETARY BONDING DESIGN & TECHNIQUES is an engineer-dictated, proven, two-part, aerospace-grade ad-hesive that requires a more rigorous and thorough curing process compared to less expensive, single-stage glues.

MODULAR MONOCOQUE CON-STRUCTION combines the best of Kes-trel frame technology, EMS fork technol-ogy, and structural bonding techniques for maximized performance, fit, ride quality, and style.

OPTIMIZED TUBE SHAPES & JUNC-TION DESIGN means tubes and junc-tions sized and shaped for given loading conditions and functional requirements. Kestrel pioneered the use of long-fiber technology to carry the loads continuously from one tube through a reinforced junc-tion into another tube.

LONG FIBER FILAMENTS ensure more integrity in the frame’s critical stress areas: the junction zones. This improves frame compliance without sacrificing strength.

KESTREL SUPER LIGHT (KSL) frames represent constant engineering refinement for more than 25 years of carbon frame design and manufacturing. Kestrel’s SL frames feature a new blend of high-modu-lus carbon fibers that increase stiffness and ride quality in a way that only Kestrel can provide.

RIDE TUNED “H” STAYS are modular monocoque seatstays and chainstays engineered for efficient power transfer and lateral tracking to enhance the carbon ride. We use a unique blend of 700K and 800K carbon in our stays to provide a superior ride unique to Kestrel.

SIZE-SPECIFIC STRUCTURAL DE-SIGN & FIBER LAYUP means tube and junction sizes are designed in proportion to the individual frame size. We vary the type, amount, and ply angles of our carbon fiber “pre-preg” throughout each frame design to ensure that our small frames are ideal for a lightweight rider, as well as meet the demands of a larger rider.

THE BIKEThe revolutionary original 4000 introduced technology that had never been seen on a production bike before, and set the standard for carbon bikes for years to come. Continuing in this proud tradition, the modern 4000 is built specifically for the most demanding triathlon competitions, and it’s been proven time and again by top-level athletes, including Andy Potts—21-time winner of Ironman 70.3 races, 4-time USAT Triathlete of the Year, and former Olympian. For the 2015 model, Potts’ valuable input during the design pro-cess made the 4000 even better. Proving its versatility, the 4000 has also been raced in time trials of the Vuelta a España and the Giro d’Italia. This is a dedicated machine for long-distance performance, made possible with details that make the rider more comfortable.

FEATURES AND BENEFITS• 800K high-modulus carbon fiber has a

groundbreaking weight-to-stiffness ratio. Weight of the raw Legend SL frame is only 780g (55cm).

• Meticulously constructed with inner poly-urethane molds in key areas, such as the bottom bracket shell and head tube, to smooth the fibers and control resin con-tent, creating the lightest and strongest frame possible—from the inside out. The result is a lively, resilient ride feel.

• Similar construction for the fork uses an EPS foam mold to smooth and compact the fibers throughout, especially in the crown area, allowing the fork to be fine-tuned for rigidity with a touch of compliance.

• The down tube joins the tapered (1-1/8 - 1-1/2”) head tube to increase lateral stiffness in the front end for excellent steering precision.

• The BB30 bottom bracket increases the frame’s stiffness at the crank, and asymmetrical chainstays offset drivetrain torque for maximum power transfer.

• Kestrel’s H-stays and EMS fork are shaped to combine lateral stiffness with compliance and vibration damping to help the wheels stick to the road.

• Geometry is fast and aggressive, with a super-low head tube for an aerodynamic position, but with wheelbase and head tube angles optimized for powering through long rides.

• Each of the seven sizes has unique tube diameters and carbon layup to give the best ride feel for a wide range of riders.

THE BIKEA close cousin to the Legend race bike, but with more relaxed geometry for increased comfort, especially on long rides. Don’t be fooled, though—it’s still plenty fast.

THE RIDEREnthusiast road riders who like to stretch out their mil-age on the weekends or tackle Gran Fondos with com-fort and control. Cyclists who want to go fast without having to suffer too much for speed.

FEATURES AND BENEFITS• Kestrel Superlight carbon layup gives the

right blend of stiffness and compliance. 800K high-modulus carbon fiber used in the SL frames has a groundbreaking weight-to-stiffness ratio.

• The tapered (1-1/8 - 1-1/2) head tube increases lateral stiffness in the front end for better steering precision.

• A slightly sloping top tube allows the rider to mount and dismount more easily.

• The BB30 bottom bracket makes for a stiff and efficient pedaling platform.

• Kestrel’s EMS fork and H-stays are shaped to combine lateral stiffness with compliance and vibration damping to help the wheels stick to the road.

• Aerodynamic shaped stays, seat post, and seat tube, plus internal cable rout-ing, let the wind slip over the bike.

• Geometry is aggressive, but with a bit more head-tube height and a shorter top tube for all-day comfort.

• Each of the six sizes has a unique carbon layup to optimize the ride feel for a wide range of riders.

• Four different frame/component levels put the RT1000 within reach of even budget-minded riders.

• Kestrel EMS Pro aero seatpost allows for a wide range of saddle positions.
