VIRGINIA NOTESAnytime notes are added to a section (there will be notes for just about every section) there will be three copies when able:

*Color

*Black and White

*Black and White with answers

The notes pages are the information provided by the VDOE, but put into note form for the children to glue in their notebooks.

I provided blanks for the children to write either important vocabulary, vocabulary they may not be familiar with, or facts of particular interest.

Branches of GovernmentA colleague told me about an activity similar to this once, so over the years, I modified it. I can’t take credit for the idea, but wanted to tell about it because the premise is great for showing a balance.

Materials: 3 pencils, an index cards, 3 students(with name tags for judicial, executive, and legislative to further the understanding and connection.

(I have also done it with labels, or masking tape flags, on the pencils for the branches so that they can connect the idea to the standard.)

Procedure: The first student takes a pencil and the index card and tries to balance the index card on the pencil. (I always use the pencil tip to make it harder, but you could also do the eraser)

After that is proven to be unsuccessful, two students try to balance the index card on their two pencils.

Finally, three student try to balance the index card on their pencils. You can give them guidance, or let them investigate different ways, but they will besuccessful.

Directions: Answer the questions based on the activity you did with the pencils and index card.

1) Were you able to balance the index card on the pencil

2) As you added pencils, did it get easier or more difficult

to balance the index card?

Why?

3) What do you think it is trying to help you understand

about the balance of powers?

4) Connect to the standard: How do you think this

activity relates to the three branches of Virginia’s

To assemble, you copy the pages and hand them out to the students.

Next, they fold them in half hamburger on the line running top to bottom.

Then, they cut the four sections on the dashed lines to the fold.

Finally, they can glue it into their notebook

TEACHER PAGEThis is a walk the room, or hallway, activity that I do, although take it and make it your own as a center or table activity, partner, group, or individual, or anything you may need. The activity I have developed over the years. I have little bags that I have pictures or items in that they can take out and look at, but since I couldn’t physically give you the items I have collected, I made pages with pictures for them to look at and interpret. (I have even made it follow-up writing assignment. The students will ask what the item was, and I use that curiosity to engage them in a writing assignment. So, we write about it. What would your priceless, irreplaceable item be that you would travel across the state of Virginia for and why?

Each student gets a page to fill out, and you can copy the directions on the back of the student worksheet or on the back of the Lost and Found pages.

The activity is a two part activity. The students have the paper, and they start at a poster. From that point, they look at the pictures and try to figure out what region it is, by doing so they are associating the pictures with a product or industry from that region. On the paper, they go to the correct bag number, write the pictures, connect them to a product or industry from that region, and write the product or industry represented by each. Finally, in the last column, the students write down the region they think it is.

There is a poster for each region.

©2015 Katie Christiansen

Objective: Identify the region being represented by the pictures.

While traveling through Virginia you lost a very important, irreplaceable, priceless item. You decide to go back to each region and search through the lost and found items in that region in hopes of finding the item. When you get to a region’s poster, look at the pictures of lost and found items in that region. In the middle column, write down each picture and the product or industry that picture might represent. In the last column, write down the region represented by each poster.

Teacher Page Cut and Paste Activity: I have included two versions of the pictures for each set: 1 – Has flaps that allow them to fold and glue it so the pictures stand up on the graphic organizer. 1 – Does not have flaps, so the students will glue it flat into the correct box. 5-4-3-2-1 Pages These are great for outside of the box thinking or to see how they interpret the information. We do the Tidewater first, and then work out way west. By the Piedmont, I had some kids listing 7 or more for each, which I said was okay because they were going above the requirements, but that is your preference. I did not label with specific regions so that they would be interchangeable to suit your students or things you may want to emphasize, but the answer keys give suggestions as to which regions I used them. I love seeing what they can come up with as they start to understand the different products and industries of each region. Answer keys are provided, but for the 5-4-3-2-1, it is only a suggestion.

TEACHER’S NOTESThe notes below have two different pictures,

one in greyscale and one in color depending on your schools allowances (we are not to print in color).

Each page of pictures has two sets on it to be copied and cut in half for each student to help save paper.

There are 2 cubes included:-1 has the areas of growth, but not the examples. The students can add pictures of examples from their notes or the page directly following the cubes.

- 1 has all the information already has it so all they do is assemble the cube.
