SYLVA

Located about 25 miles north “downmountain” from the Cashiers

The Cashiers Area is located at thedoorway to an unending mountain

playground. Whether you’re planning anafternoon hike or multi-day backing trip,there are hundreds of trails crisscrossingWestern North Carolina. Known as the “Landof the Waterfalls,” the nearby AmericanContinental Divide is where water flows intwo directions, creating innumerable serene,cascading falls and deep lagoons for localsand visitors alike to enjoy. One of the newest and most popular additionsin the Cashiers Area in Sapphire and

Highlands is ziplining. With options for all skilllevels, the routes traverse a ski area and gorge.

FLY FISHING

With its pristine waters, the CashiersArea is home to some of the finest fly

fishing in the country. Filled with trout, bassand perch, the lakes and streams in thisregion have earned a reputation as premierfishing locations. Jackson County is alsohome to the WNC Fly Fishing Trail, an all-encompassing 15-spot blue trail bringingtogether big rivers, small streams, easyaccess and backcountry hike-ins.

to catch fast-moving rapids during seasonalwater releases. Lake Glenville’s 26 miles of shoreline area boater’s haven. Besides easy access to

FROM CASHIERSINTERSECTION OF US 64 &NC 107, drive S on NC 107for 1.9 miles. Turn right (W)on Whiteside Cove Road.Continue for 2.8 miles. After

crossing bridge, pull off ontodirt on right. Follow trail to rightfor 100 yds to Little SlidingRock. Swimming holes areabove and below waterfall.Please supervise children!Return to NC 107. Turn right (S)and continue for 2.4 miles. Pulloff onto gravel on left (with athree-trunked holly tree at the Send). If you pass a EnteringNantahala National Forest sign,you have gone too far. Followtrail for 50 yds. Cross stream onfallen log and continue another100 yds. To Silver Run Falls.Continue S on NC 107 for 5.3miles into SC, passing aroadside picnic area. Turn left(E) on SC 413. Continue for 2.3miles until it dead-ends at SC130. Turn left (N) on SC 130.Continue for 1.2 miles. Afterpassing Nantahala NationalForest, Whitewater Falls sign,turn right into parking lot. Shortwalk to lookout. There are trailsto top and bottom ofWhitewater Falls, the highestwaterfall in the eastern U.S.

WHITEWATER FALLS ONLYFROM INTERSECTION OF US64 AND NC 107, drive E on

US 64 for 10.4 miles. Turn right(S) on NC 281. Continue for 9.9miles. Turn left into parking lot.Short walk to lookout. There aretrails to top and bottom ofWhitewater Falls, the highestwaterfall in the eastern U.S.

TURTLEBACK FALLS AND RAINBOW FALLS

(Not for young children or theless than physically fit).FROM WHITEWATER FALLSExit parking lot to right(North). Continue on NC 281

for 7.5 miles. Turn right intoGorges State Park (Skip to * innext paragraph).FROM CASHIERS(INTERSECTION OF US 64/NC107) drive East on US 64 for 10.4miles – turn right (South) on NC281. Continue for 0.9 miles. Turnleft into Gorges State Park.* (the Park has a parking lot,picnic area, a self-guided NatureTrail Loop and a trial to anoverlook). There is noconnecting trail between GorgesState Park, Turtleback Falls andRainbow Falls in the adjacentNational Forest. Walk back to NC281, turn left and walkapproximately 150 yards alongthey highway. Enter the woodsat an old jeep trail; descend thetrail (which gets progressivelypoorer) for approximately 1 mile.It will intersect a trail whichparallels the river. To your frontis Turtleback Falls. Travel leftalong the trail to view TurtlebackFalls from the bottom. Continuehiking another quarter of a milein the same direction to RainbowFalls, a 150 ft. waterfall thatboasts rainbows on sunnymornings.

FROM SYLVA (EXIT 85) Drive(E) on US 23/74 for 8.9 mi.;turn L onto the Blue RidgeParkway, and proceed in thedirection of Asheville. Exit atUS 276 and cont. (S) on US276 for 7.5 mi.; turn rightinto the Sliding Rock parkinglot (admission fee, lifeguards

Turn left at next trafficlight in the direction of the GreatSmoky Mountains National Park(staying on US 441 N). Continuefor 2.3 miles. Turn right on BigCove Road. Continue for 5.2miles. Turn right, crossing bridgeover a river, straight ahead is aparking lot and trail. Climb 170steps to Mingo Falls.

TOM’S BRANCH FALLS, INDIAN CREEK FALLS ANDJUNEYWHANK FALLS

FROM SYLVA (EXIT 81) DriveW on US 74 for 16.5 miles toExit 67. At bottom of ramp,turn right onto Spring Street.Continue through first trafficlight and follow signs forDeep Creek Campground.

Enter Deep Creek Entrance ofthe Great Smoky MountainsNational Park, and continue for0.6 miles, pass the picnic area,and turn L into parking area. Thetrail, an easy hike to Tom’sBranch Falls and Indian CreekFalls, starts at the far end of theunloading area and parallelsDeep Creek. Tom’s Branch Falls isvisible across Deep Creek, 0.2miles from parking lot. Continuefor 0.5 miles along Deep Creek,crossing a bridge. Just before thenext bridge, take the trail toright, 200 ft. on your left is IndianCreek Falls. Back at parking lot,on the right, is a sign and trailleading to Juneywhank Falls, 0.3miles up the mountain.

RUFUS MORGAN FALLS AND WAYAH BALD (VISTA)

FROM NORTHERN JACKSONCOUNTY Drive (S) on US

23/441, which joins US 64. (Skipto * in next paragraph.)FROM SOUTHERN JACKSONCOUNTY Drive W (in thedirection of Highl ands andFranklin) on US 64. At junction ofUS 64 & US 23/441, turn left on“on” ramp. *Continue on US 64 for 3.8 milesafter the US 23/441 Exit (S). Turnright at the Wayah Bald signonto a two-lane road. Continue0.3 miles. Turn left on WayahRoad (NC 1310). Continue on

Wayah Road for 6.4 miles. Turnleft onto Forest Service (gravelroad) #388. Continue 2 miles tothe Rufus Morgan Trail parkinglot. Hike 0.5 miles up a moderategrade to Rufus Morgan Falls. Fora breathtaking 360° view fromthe old stone firetower, return toWayah Road. Turn left for 2.6miles to the Wayah Bald sign.Turn right onto gravel road.Continue until parking lot isreached at end of the road(approx. 2 miles). To return theway you came, turn left. HIKING TRAILSPINNACLE PARK

3-4 hrs, 6-7 mi. strenuousunmarked trail, uphill on the

way out and downhill on return,with a spectacular 270-degreeview of Cullowhee, Webster andSylva from the pinnacle (bewareof sharp drop-off). FROM SYLVA (EXIT 85): DriveEast on US 23/74 for 0.5 mi., turnL on Steeple Rd for 0.2 mi. untildead-end at Old Asheville Hwy.Turn L, continue for 0.6 mi., turnR on Fisher Ck. Rd. Continue 2.1mi. until dead-end at parkentrance. Hike straight up thetrail behind the iron gate. Stayon main trail, and cross creektwice early on. Cross numerousfeeder streams and passcascading waterfall on L. 5-10min. after waterfall, take trail toleft. Trail bears L again at a smallclearing on Pinnacle Ridgeleading out to overlook.

WATERROCK KNOB2.4 mi. round-trip. Fairlysteep hike to 6,292 ft. peak.
