As a youngster growing up in Laredo, Texas, I spent many fun hours participating in the Washington’s Birthday Celebration. Performing in “El 22,” as my Dad used to call it, was the big time for this impressionable young girl who loved to dance, march, and twirl her baton. My parents would take my two sisters and I to the carnival for a pink cotton candy on a stick and a spin on the Ferris Wheel. We would pretend we were on top of the world. Then we’d climb the bleachers at Shirley Field where we were mesmerized with the fireworks. Washington’s Birthday always brings back lots of happy memories. That’s why I keep returning to the yearly festivities with family and friends, and anyone who loves Washington’s Birthday is a friend of mine. As you read this issue of By George Magazine, consider this to be your personal invitation to the region’s premiere celebration of all things George Washington. Each year our patriotic party is rated as one of the best annual events in the entire country. No doubt the 2015 celebration will be the biggest and best in the festival’s storied history. I am eternally grateful to the army of volunteers who share an enthusiasm for WBCA. I also want to recognize the generous sponsors who make this the “Celebration with Something for Everyone!” Flip over to page 45 and read some of the reasons why people have been celebrating the father of our country for 118 years. So bring your good times and your laughter too. You are going to make life long friends in Laredo and you’ll want to return year after year as so many before you have done. For over 30 days, from late January to late February, Laredo celebrates the life and legacy of our country’s first president, with events ranging from the colorful Jamboozie and the sublime majesty of the Princess Pocahontas and Colonial Pageants to the sizzling Jalapeño Festival.

George and the PrincessBut just how did a former Spanish colonial settlement founded some 21 years before the Declaration of Independence come to celebrate George Washington’s birthday?

Circa 1897 Laredo, Texas experienced a boon of sorts with the coming railroads. The railroads brought in a host of new businesses and industries to town, and with that, came new faces. Laredo’s newest citizens sought to establish a celebration with a distinctive patriotic flavor and one fraternal organization was up to the challenge. The Improved Order of Red Men researched its historical records and found that they had a venerable member within their ranks, George Washington, and an idea was born. Why not celebrate the Father of Our Country?

The men planned an elaborate celebration that not only paid tribute to Washington, but, it also included a rather interesting character, one who predates our heroic president by nearly 150 years, Princess Pocahontas. The schema involved the “Red Men” raiding the Laredo City Hall and taking the Mayor and his defenders captive. Princess Pocahontas would come in, intercede for the life of the Mayor and his cohorts, and then, the grateful Mayor would present her with a key to the City of Laredo. The Princess, in turn, would lead a parade through the streets of Downtown Laredo to pay homage to Washington.

While the “Raid on City Hall” is now consigned to local lore, Princess Pocahontas remains just as integral a part of the celebration as Washington, himself. She still receives the Key to the City of Laredo from the hands of the current Mayor at the Anheuser-Busch Washington’s Birthday Parade.

Your Celebra tion DestinationWild about GeorgeFrom these humble beginnings, the Washington’s Birthday Celebration grew to a month-long celebration. Some 40 years after the first celebration took place, a pastor of St. Peter’s Catholic Church helped found the Society of Martha Washington, recognizing the vital role that the First Lady played throughout her husband’s life. The Society of Martha Washington presents an elaborate pageant that takes its theme from celebrations that the First Couple might have hosted at the White House, with the daughters and the granddaughters from the Society’s ranks, making their debut to society in glittering, elaborately designed gowns.

Princess Pocahontas, herself, has her own Pageant and Ball. Now in its 35th year, the Princess Pocahontas Council celebrates the life and legacy of Native Americans in a pageant that takes its theme from the spirituality and sublime nature of the great tribal spirit.

Other events that have now become beloved and integral parts of the celebration include the WBCA Carnival Sponsored by McDonald’s of Laredo, the WBCA Stars and Stripes Air Show Spectacular Sponsored by Miller Lite (featuring vintage air craft and death-defying aerial antics), the majestic Anheuser Busch Washington’s Birthday Parade, the dazzling IBC Youth Parade Under the Stars, the Mardi-Gras styled Jamboozie (which takes its name from a delightfully decadent purple-colored libation), the Taste of Laredo (which showcases cuisine from both sides of the Rio Grande), the Comedy Jam for George, the epic WBCA Jalapeño Festival Sponsored by La Costeña (paying homage to that delightful spicy pepper) and much more in this “Celebration with Something for Everyone!” Laredo knows how to celebrate Washington’s Birthday like no other. The fun starts here, so come “Get Your Party On!”

The star-studded Commander’s Reception officially kicks off South Texas’ grandest party of all, the Washington’s Birthday Celebration. The media gets a sneak peak at the upcoming attractions for this year’s festivities in a splendid gala designed to whet everyone’s appetite for the celebration’s many offerings.

While the event is open only to the media, WBCA™ members and special guests, it carries all of the excitement and anticipation of an exclusive red carpet, world premier event. Everyone who is anyone will be there as the huge red, white and blue ribbon is cut to officially kick off the Celebration.

George and Martha Washington, adorned in their elegant costumes, make their grand appearance, joined by this year’s Princess Pocahontas and the Abrazo Children from the United States and Mexico. Elected officials and dignitaries usher in the festivities, as well.

Attendees also get to partake the samplings of the various sights, sounds and tastes of what’s in store for the next 33 days. Adding to the celebratory flair are the ever-popular Samba Vida Dancers, a cherished favorite for the Jamboozie, who may even begin an impromptu parade around the Laredo Energy Arena,

inviting everyone to join in the dance! Don’t be surprised if you happen to bump shoulders with Darth Vader or Wonder Woman as the South Texas Collectors Expo showcases some of its wide cast of characters. The Commander’s Reception certainly creates a huge buzz and anticipation for the fun, magic and grand event that is the Washington’s Birthday Celebration!

The quintessential image of George Washington sitting nobly atop a horse belies an aspect of the beloved president’s life that history tends to downplay: his athleticism. As a young Indian scout, Washington had to keep fit, as athletic prowess was necessary for survival. Dodging arrows and racing through thickets required intense physical stamina.

The Founding Fathers’ 5K Fun Run and Health Fair pays tribute to Washington as an Athlete. While runners don’t dodge bullets and arrows nor run through forests and across streams, the 5k run mirrors distances that Washington, himself, may have had to sprint as a scout. With an early morning shotgun start of 8:30 AM, runners (and walkers) make the dash as they compete for various prizes in this chip timed race. Different categories exist for men, women, youth and for those who prefer to walk rather than run.

While the race is going on, other folks wind their way through the Laredo Medical Center’s Health Fair for wellness examinations, dietary presentations and events designed to promote a healthy lifestyle. There is even an area for children to teach these youngsters the importance of getting an early start on a healthy lifestyle.

When Francis Scott Key penned his famous poem, he used the glaring rockets and bombs lighting up the Washington night sky as his inspiration. What began as a fierce battle turned into America’s moment of glory, forever immortalized in our National Anthem.

These days, the bright red glare of pyrotechnic rockets, streaking across the Laredo sky, take on a celebratory tone. Crowds lift up their heads to the sky, craning their necks to see colorful bursts dancing in the air to mark the end of South Texas’ biggest party, the Washington’s Birthday Celebration.

Eager spectators line up during the day to stake out the best seats. The smell of fajitas grilling over an open flame permeates through-out the grounds. All of a sudden, as night falls, a hush falls over the crowds as the spectacle begins. The dazzling show lights up Eastern Webb County with such a brilliance that, at times, it seems that night turns into day.

The H-E-B Fireworks Extravaganza stands as one of the oldest facets of the Washington’s Birthday Celebration. From its earliest days, the event has paid homage to the Father of Our Country through brilliant pyrotechnic displays that feature intricate images, some of Washington, himself, piercing the February sky. Although the event took a brief hiatus during World War II, it remains one of the oldest staples among the pantheon of events celebrat-ing Washington’s legacy.

The venerable buildings at Laredo Community College’s historic Fort McIntosh Campus stand as a tangible link to the early days of the Washington’s Birthday Celebration. Troops from the Old Army garrison marched proudly during the Grand Parade with lock step precision as the brass buttons of their uniforms glistened brightly under the Texas sun.

These days the historical buildings bear witness to a new form of celebration. Instead of troops preparing themselves for the grand stage, children gleefully invade Fort McIntosh for a day of fun and festivities during LCC’s beloved Family Fun Fest. For one Saturday, Laredo’s venerable institution of higher education transforms itself into a family wonderland filled with games, entertainment and a petting zoo! Children of all ages participate in events designed to challenge the brain and entice the senses. The honoring of Princess Pocahontas, the regal Indian maiden, during the festivities of the Washington’s Birthday Celebration has been a tradition since1898.

Princess Pocahontas served as a peacemaker between the Native Americans and the City

of Laredo officials during a mock raid at Laredo City Hall. In appreciation the mayor presented her with the key to the City of Laredo, thus began the tradition.

Princess Pocahontas rides on horseback in the WBCA™ parade and presides over

a spectacular pageant that is a part of the Washington’s Birthday Celebration. The Princess

Pocahontas Pageant portrays and pays homage to Native Americans in a setting that is both mystical and magical. The event supports the Native American’s deep respect of Mother Earth and its elements while showcasing Princess Pocahontas and her royal court in all of the splendor of the Native American tribes they represent.

Princess Pocahontas epitomizes the virtues of natural beauty and simplicity of those first Americans and is dressed in a traditional white costume with intricate beaded designs that are delicately hand sewn.

The Society of Martha Washington’s Colonial Ball and Pageant is considered the “Crown Jewel” of the Washington’s Birthday Celebration. President of the Society, Betty Ann Bunn Moreno leads the organization chartered by a group of socially and civically active ladies in 1939, including her grandmother, Minnie Bruni Martin and her mother, Dora Martin Bunn, who was one of the six original members to sign the charter.

This year, the first lady of the land, Martha Dandridge Washington, will be portrayed by Melissa Cantu Cigarroa, joined by our First President General George Washington, portrayed by Gabriel Cesar Castillo. Gracing the stage will also be 16 beautiful young ladies, daughters and granddaughters of Society members, who will portray leading ladies of the

Colonial period to recreate a historic event during Washington’s tenure as President of the United States.

Over 1,500 guests will descend upon the LISD Civic Center Auditorium to be dazzled by the elaborate staging that compliments an eloquent storyline focusing on the sterling qualities of the Washington’s. The festivities continue the following evening with a cocktail party for one more toast to the 2015 participants, their friends, and family.

The members of the Society of Martha Washington are honored to welcome friends from near and far to a celebration that pays tribute to our first American president and his legacy. His legacy transcends international boundaries of goodwill deeply rooted in Laredo’s history.

The stars always shine brighter under the South Texas sky, and the brightest are the children of Laredo and area schools who dazzle throughout this

illuminated parade. Over 150 groups wind their way through

the downtown area with illuminated floats, dance groups

and bands competing for special awards.

“Star Spangled Celebration” is the theme of this year’s parade.

As dusk sets into the evening sky, a palpable sense of excitement fills the air. Marching band units line up, ensuring that their forms are precise, while the cheerleaders and dance teams ready their electric torches to light the way.

Along the parade route, clowns warm up the crowds, getting them even more excited about things to come. Children wave their own electric torches in eager anticipation. When the police squad cars, with their bright, flashing lights and piercing sirens, make their presence known, the crowd rises to its feet as the IBC Youth Parade Under the Stars begins.

For generations of Laredoans, the IBC Youth Parade Under the Stars marks the beginning of the homestretch to the culmination of the Washington’s Birthday Celebration.

Traditionally held on the Thursday prior to the Big Weekend, the event showcases the talents of Laredo’s youth. Moms and Dads eagerly await their children’s appearance, whether it’s atop a float, playing in their respective high school bands or dancing with a group, there’s fun for everyone!

The floats are a marvel to behold. Inspired and sometimes created by the youth, themselves, they rival creations done by professionals. In the spirit of the Washington’s Birthday Celebration, the children even don colonial costumes to look like the First Couple and Princess Pocahontas.

As George and Martha Washington and the Society of Martha Washington debutantes prepare for the grand pageant at the L.I.S.D. Civic Center Auditorium, South Texas’ finest assemble just across the portico at the L.I.S.D. Civic Center Ballroom for the Caballeros Cocktail Party which pays homage to three leading figures of the Washington’s Birthday Celebration.

This year’s honorees include Mr. South Texas 2015 U.S. Sen. John Cornyn, 2014-2015 WBCA™ President Veronica Castillon, and Congressman Henry Cuellar, who portrayed Washington during last year’s festivities. Incidentally, this marks the second time that Cuellar has earned Caballeros’ distinction, as he had previously been named Mr. South Texas.

Cuellar joins a host of elected officials, at both the federal and state level, who have received this special honor, including former President George W. Bush, the late U.S. Sen. Lloyd Bentsen, the late Gov. John Connally, the late Lt. Gov. Bob Bullock, State Sen. Judith Zaffirini and Texas A & M System Chancellor John Sharp. Cuellar, however, is the only sitting elected federal official to have ever portrayed George Washington while in office. Castillon, herself, joins a special sorority of women who have achieved special recognition by the Caballeros. Her fellow Damas include the aforementioned Zaffirni and Richards, as well as

former U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, former WBCA™ President Pati Guajardo and the first woman to earn the distinction of “Mr.” South Texas, Mary Elizabeth Butt. It is a night of joyful celebration and remembrance amidst a galaxy of South Texas’ finest luminaries.

With Laredo’s finest cuisine on display, patrons will walk into a culinary delight at the Taste of Laredo.

Savory dishes such as tasty enchiladas callejeras, sizzling fajitas, fresh sushi and scrumptious pastas tempt the taste buds of even the most delicate palates. When historic San Bernardo comes alive on a crisp Saturday morning in late February, it can mean only one thing: the start of the Celebration’s most eagerly anticipated act, the Anheuser-Busch Washington’s Birthday Parade.

The parade, the celebration’s oldest and most venerable event, traces its roots to the very beginning of Laredo’s famed Wash-ington’s Birthday Celebration. In 1898, after the Improved Order of Red Men laid “siege” on the Laredo City Hall and Princess Pocahontas “rescued” the captive Mayor and his cohort, the grateful alcalde bestowed on the Indian royal the Key to the City of Laredo.

Since then, both the parade and the route have grown significantly. Princess Pocahontas continues her tradition joined by her court and other personages such as George and Martha Washington, Mr. South Texas, and elected offi-cials from federal to local. A plethora of intricate floats also make their way down the parade route, which still culminates in Downtown Lar-edo, not too far away from its original setting.

For generations of Laredoans, the Washington’s Birthday Celebration reaches its zenith with this grand parade featuring the majestic Budweiser Clydesdale horses trotting down San Bernardo Avenue. Grandparents join their grandchildren along the parade route, cheering on the participants. Proud alumni stand at attention when their high school band marches by and plays the energetic fight song and alma mater. When the Society of Martha Washington debutantes ride onboard their floats amidst the cheering crowds, it’s a tradition for them to lift up

their hoop skirts ever so slightly to reveal creative footwear, much to the delight of audiences. “Show us your shoes”, comes the cry from the excited crowd.

The fun is not restricted to the day of the parade. Drive along the parade route and you’re treated to what is arguably the largest tailgate party in South Texas! Parade faithful, including whole families, camp out the night before, regardless of the weather, to stake their claims on prized seating. The aroma of fajitas, menudo

and coffee fills the cool night air. Call it the party before the party. In the morning, the faithful’s devoted vigil is rewarded as the parade finally begins! The bright sunlight catches the glittering brocade from the costumes worn by Princess Pocahontas and her court, as well as by Martha Washington and the debutantes, mak-ing these precious stones sparkle and shine like diamonds, almost ethereal. The comical antics of the Alzafar Shriners elicit a thunderous roar of laughter while the clowns mix and mingle with the crowds, getting them into the act. The elaborate drum and fife corps, dressed in

authentic Colonial-period uniforms, harken to mind the sights and sounds that Washington might have experienced back on Mount Vernon.

In the end, when the last float has made its way down the parade route and the tunes from the last marching unit fade into the distance, the crowd continues in its jubilation, basking in the merriment that will always be the Anheuser-Busch Washington’s Birthday Parade!

Senator John Cornyn has been selected as Mr. South Texas 2015 for the 118th Washington’s Birthday Celebration.

The Mr. South Texas designation is presented to a deserving individual who has made a significant and lasting contribution to the growth and development of Laredo and the South Texas region. Texas Com-munity Bank generously sponsors the event. Senator Cornyn was first elected to the United States Senate in 2002 and overwhelm-ingly re-elected in 2008. Previously he served in Texas as a district judge, a member of the Texas Supreme Court, and as Texas Attorney General. During his time in the U.S. Senate, Sen. Cornyn has distinguished himself as a leader in the Senate on a variety of issues important to Texans and has earned a national reputation as an articulate and powerful voice for Texas values in Washington. Sen. Cornyn is com-mitted to bolstering the national defense, repairing the im-migration system, boosting access to more affordable health care, and improving educational opportunities for all Texans.

He has been an advocate for Texas military person-nel, veterans and their families, and believes we must provide them with the best possible support, care and benefits. He promotes establishing better access to health care facilities throughout South Texas.

Sen. Cornyn’s support for South Texas has been unwavering. He has worked closely with local officials along the border, as well as business, education, health care, and civic leaders to ensure South Texas’ priori-ties and has long supported the growth of some of Laredo’s most important institutions, including Laredo Community College, Texas A&M International University, and the City of Laredo Airport. He’s been a strong advocate for the creation of an interstate highway in South Texas, and has authored several bills endorsed by the City of Laredo to enhance ports of entry along our southern border and provide for

faster and more secure trade and travel. Sen. Cornyn has worked to enhance the justice system in South Texas, having recommended and supported the confirmations of Judges Diana Saldaña and Marina Marmolejo of the Southern District of Texas, among others, and continuing to advocate for the

needs of local law enforcement in Laredo. Sen. Cornyn currently sits on the Senate Finance and Judiciary Committees. He serves as the top Republican on the Judiciary Committee’s Immigration, Refugees and Border Security subcommittee.

A graduate of Trinity University and St. Mary’s School of Law, both in San Antonio, Sen. Cornyn also earned a Masters of Law from the University of Virginia Law School in 1995. He was named the St. Mary’s Distinguished Law School Graduate in 1994 and a Trinity University Distinguished Alumnus in 2001.

The Mr. South Texas Selection Committee, comprised of past presidents of the WBCA™ and former Mr. South

Texas recipients who reside in Laredo take great effort in creating an all-inclusive nom-inating pool of candidates from all walks of life who have made a significant impact on the area. Together with the Mr. South Texas designation, Senator Cornyn becomes a

member of Los Caballeros de la Republica del Rio Grande. This select group of national

and international distinguished men and women are honored for their dedication and

The WBCA™ Poster Unveiling has become one of the most colorful events leading up to the start of the Celebration. Since 1982, WBCA™ Presidents have selected local and regional artists to create original pieces to be used as the official commemorative poster. This year’s creation, “Star Spangled Celebration” by local artist Christina Castillón, captures the essence of the Celebration. Her watercolor artwork reflects the bicultural Celebration the communities of Laredo organize and participate in as a vibrant border town.

Christina has always had a love for art. This was instilled in her as a little girl by her grandmother, Elvira Salinas. Her

grandmother taught painting classes in her home, and it was there that Christina’s talent began to take shape. She is a signature member of the Texas Watercolor Society and a member of the Southern Watercolor Society. She enjoys sharing her talent by donating art pieces to numerous charitable organizations for fund raising. Her preferred art medium is watercolor and acrylic, and her favorite subject matter is figurative painting and still life.

American Historical Theatre George Washington Performance

Amidst the celebrations surrounding Washington’s Birthday, the AHT George Washington Performance brings the nation’s first president to life, depict-ing actual episodes from Washington’s personal chronicles. Seasoned American Historical Theatre actors light up the Laredo stage straight from Mt. Vernon!This year’s performance will feature Marquis de Lafayette and George

The colorful flair of the Latin culture comes alive as LULAC Council #12 celebrates its an-nual Noche de Cabaret. As of 1996, the beats and sounds of the night life echo throughout the night as attendees enjoy the Cabaret vibe at the L.I.S.D Civic Center Ballroom dance floor. Along with the evening’s festivities, Noche de Cabaret also pays homage to Laredo’s unique culture as it honors community leaders who have contributed to the success of educating the youth. This year’s higher education hon-oree is Dr. A. Marcus Nelson. In addition, pro-ceeds from the Noche de Cabaret go towards scholarships for Laredo’s youth. For tickets call 956-949-7685.

The stars descend upon Laredo as LULAC Council #12 honors luminaries from both sides of the Rio Grande during the venerable Noche Mexicana: A Presentation of Señor y Señora Internacional Gala. A beloved staple of the George Washington’s Birthday Celebration, the event pays tribute to the binational and bicul-tural relations between the United States and Mexico. Every year, two outstanding honorees are selected to represent the United States and Mexico, for their contributions in uniting American and Mexican culture. LULAC Council #12 honor these recipients with an evening of dining and dancing. Previous American recipients include Congressman Henry Cuellar, the late acting legend Ricardo Montalban, and entertainer Vicky Carr. Mexican honorees include singing sensation Laura Guzman, the late Tequila magnate Felipa Sauza and Mariachi legend Vicente Fernandez. In celebrating the patriotic legacy of George Washington, we are also honoring our cultural heritage.
