Stability and Growth

As Sight Connection embarked on a new period of stability and growth in 2015 under the leadership of its new CEO/President, Shannon Grady Martsolf, three words have come to best describe its mission.

Adapt: our clients come to Sight Connection, often with a recent diagnosis of serious vision loss, for help in coping with the emotional, practical and social challenges they face. Sight Connection’s Low Vision Clinic evaluates the degree of vision loss they experience and determine strategies and tools to maximize remaining vision. In 2015, Sight Connection provided 920 low vison clinical and therapy services.

Learn: vision loss, however severe and at whatever age, often awakens fears, self-doubts and a sense of isolation. Sight Connection is often the first call someone makes as they experience vision loss. We support clients in overcoming these challenges through in-home services provided by social workers, rehabilitation teachers and mobility and orientation instructors, as well as through adaptive aids and assistive technology training programs. In 2015, Sight Connection made more than 1,600 in-home visits in addition to 306 information and referral services.

Thrive: the goal of all services and programs offered by Sight Connection is to provide the support, skills, tools and encouragement that all our clients need to regain emotional balance, achieve personal goals and enjoy life to the fullest.

As Sight Connection celebrates its 50th year of service to its community, 2015 has been a year of stabilizing and strengthening financial conditions

and reducing reliance on reserves. Expanding contracts with the Washington State Department of Services for the Blind and the Independent Living Program administered by the University of Washington have secured new sources of revenue. Plans are underway to build on these relationships in 2016. Growth is also underway geographically. Historically Sight Connection’s service area has been King, Snohomish and Skagit counties with a bi-monthly clinic presence in Bremerton and Sedro Woolley. The offering of field services in Pierce County is the first step in expanding much needed aid to people living in the outer reaches of northwestern Washington.

Sight Connection is grateful to all of its supporters — clients, family and friends, funders and public and private partners who ensured Sight Connection’s current and future critical impact to the visually impaired.

As a client of Sight Connection for over 17 years and now serving as the Chair of the Board of Directors, I would like to encourage our supporters to consider making a legacy gift, however large or small, as a way to ensure the ability of Sight Connection to provide its services far into the future. I personally have joined the Visionary Circle – a group of individuals who have included Sight Connection in their Estate Plan - as a way of showing gratitude and appreciation for many years of care and support.

With my gratitude,

Mary LewisChair, Board of Directors

“They came to my home numerous times and made my life at home and outside, so much easier. Now I can do anything including cooking and play my instrument. Karen taught me how to use a cane which gives me the freedom to be mobile anywhere.”—Nagu
