WorkshopSeriesSummary:TheAmericanInstituteofPakistanStudies(AIPS)incollaborationwithInterUniversityConsortiumforPromotionofSocialSciences(IUCPSS)organizedaseriesofthreeFacultyMentoringWorkshopson“TeachingArchaeologyandCulturalHeritageManagement”in2015.Theworkshopsincludedfifteenparticipants(6womenand9men)fromninedifferentinstitutionsfromSindh,Punjab,Balochistan,KhyberPakhtunkhwa,andGilgit-Baltistan.TheywereverysuccessfulinstrengtheningtheteachingofarchaeologyandculturalheritageinPakistaniuniversitiesthroughthedevelopmentofappropriateteachingpedagogyandgoals.Thedifferentsessionsfocusedonspecifictopicsthatcomplementedeachotherandoverlappedenoughtohelpdevelopcontinuitybetweeneachworkshop.ParticipantsengagedinworkshopexercisestodevelopnewresourcesthatwerelatersharedwitheachotherduringtheworkshopandviatheInternetaftertheyreturnedtotheirinstitutions.ParticipantevaluationsconductedinthecourseoftheworkshopshaveconfirmedthattheyhaveestablishedimportantnetworkswithnewcolleaguesinPakistanandinternationallythathaveresultedinsharedteachingmodules,conferencesandcollaborativeresearchprojects.Participantshavealsosharedthenewprojectsandeventsthathavebeeninspiredbytheseworkshopsthroughemailcommunicationandonsocialmedia.

traditional,non-lecturemodels);severalreportthattheirresearchhasbroadened(includingforlocalresearchconferencestheyhavehosted);andafewhavebeguntoincorporatequestionsofconflictintotheircourses.(Twoorthreehave,draftedpapersonthesetopics.)Thiswasprobablyinformalasmuchasformal,sincejuniorprofessorsrarelysetcourseanddegreerequirements.Moregenerally,however,thesubjectmatterhashelpedtheparticipantstothinkthroughthecontextsinwhichtheyteach.AlthoughtheworkshopswerenotintendedtobeaboutPakistan,currenteventsinevitablyintrudedontheoreticaldiscussions.(ThesecondworkshopwasheldimmediatelyafterthePeshawarshootingsattheendof2014.)OurthreeguestlecturersspokevariouslyaboutbilateralwaterrelationsandclimatechangeinSouthAsia;UnitedNationsregionalpeacenegotiationsincentralAmerica;andinternationalhumanrightsinvestigationsinGazaandSudan.Theeffectoftheircontributionswasprofound:thesewereindividuals(amongPakistan’sbestinglobalaffairs)towhomourworkshopparticipantshadnotpreviouslybeenexposed,andtheirabilitytohelpourparticipantsdrawlessonsfromtheglobaltolocal(andbackagain)augmentedourformalagenda.Lastly,fewoftheworkshopparticipantsknewoneanotherbuttheiruniversitiesinfrequentlycollaboratedand/orsharedresources.Thosefromthenorthhavenowbeguntoestablishinformalrelationshipswithoneanother,andreportthattheyhavediscussedthepossibilityofco-sponsoringfutureconferences.

4) WorkshopTheme:PakistanandPeaceStudies:MethodsandMeaningFirstWorkshop:January11-15,2016,ledbyYasminSaikia,ArizonaStateUniversityWorkshopTitle:WhatisPeace?HowdoesitapplyinPakistan?FirstWorkshopSummary:YasminSaikialedthefirstofthethree-partworkshop,whichwasheldatLUMSJanuary10-14,2016.Tenparticipantswereselectedfromapoolofover12applicants,andeightattendedthe

workshop.Theselectionofparticipantswasbasedonmerit,diversity,gender,andregionalrepresentation.Theworkshopincludedthreewomenandfivemen,representingdifferentdisciplinaryandscholarlybackgrounds.Oneoftheweaknesseswasthelackofreligiousdiversityinthiscohortaswedidnothaveintheapplicantpoolrepresentationfromanyreligiousminority.Theworkshopmixedlectureandpresentationmethodswithinteractivegroupdiscussionsandproblemsolvingapproaches.Theworkshophadthreeteachingobjectives–peaceconcept,peacemethods,andpeacepractice.Theparticipantsbeganbyreadingdifferentconceptsofpeace,bothwesternandnon-western,religiousandsecular,andpositiveandnegativepeace.Next,theyinvestigatedseveralpeacemethods,suchastheroleofeconomy,art,lawandtherelationshipbetweeninstitutionsandindividualsinpeace-making.TheyalsoexploredsomeofthepeacemethodslikeTruthandReconciliation,TransitionalandRestorativejustice,andWarCriminalsTribunal.Finally,theydiscussedsomeofthepracticesofpeacethatarelivedineverydaycontextandtherelationshipofpeacewithpluralism,co-existence,toleranceandharmony.Towardstheendoftheworkshop,theparticipantsoutlinedresearchtopicsandworkedonadraftsyllabusinpreparationforthesecondworkshopseries.Thesecondworkshopwillfocusonresearchmethods,whichisplannedforearlyFall2016andwillbeledbyAnthropologistChadHainesandComputerScientistHasanDavalcu.Theworkshopwasinteractive,engaging,andithelpedtheparticipantstothinkofnewissues,ideasandproblems,aswellas,thepossibilityofpeace.Throughthethree-partseriesofthePeaceWorkshop,AIPShopestoestablishasmallcircleofpeacefacultywhocanworkcollaborativelywithinPakistanandalsoestablishlinkageswithAmericanuniversities.Severaloftheparticipantsinthisfirstcohortseemedpromising,andcouldsucceedintheircareers.Theparticipantswillbenefitfromfurtherconversationsabouttheapproachestopeacethathasbeenintroducedtothemwiththeirstudents,colleagues,andcommunityfordevelopingsynergytotaketheworkofpeaceforwardinPakistan.
