MESSAGE FROM THE POTENTATEIllustrious Sir, Chris Hagenian

Nobles & Ladies,As we make our way through the last few remaining months

of the year we are running full steam ahead! We have gone to the online calendar as our official calendar and will not be printing a paper version anymore. The reason for this is the dynamics and constant changes to our events schedule makes print calendars obsolete by the time you get them in the Arabian Tales. Please sign up for our Web-

Blast and refer to the online calendar for events. That being said we are making robust changes to the way we

operate, the fiber-optic internet project is now complete. We have upgraded to multiple industrial wireless routers throughout the temple that can support up to 150 wireless connections each, we are getting ready to pilot our first online stated meeting with

an outlaying club (technology willing), created an online El Zaribah Store where you can purchase merchandise and event tickets, and we are creating a digital “drop box” file sharing system to use with all units and clubs. As we progress we will provide you with the information and training on each of these items.Things are looking positive in our operating environment, but we still need

to focus on General Fund Fundraising and Membership. We will have one more Rush Night and Ceremonial by the end of this year in hopes to reach our goal of 62 new members this year. Please look closely at your circle of friends and invite them share with us this great fraternity and philanthropy.Lady Mary and I would like to thank all the Nobles, Ladies, Friends, and

Guests who made the Lake Havasu Ceremonial a SUCCESS! We had a fantastic time and we WELCOME all the New Nobles and their Ladies to El Zaribah!!

Yours in the Faith,

Chris

Shriners Hospitals for Children: A History of Innovation and Excellence in Burn Care

Shriners Hospitals for Children® is noted worldwide as a leader in pediatric burn care. Since opening our three pediatric burn hospitals in the 1960s, our health care system has been at the forefront of innovative programs and treatment techniques that have both dramatically improved the survival rate for children with severe burns and enhanced their quality of life.

Here is a brief timeline of the development of our burn care program:

1960s: In response to the growing awareness of a need for pediatric burn care, research and education, the governing body of the Shriners organization passed a resolution at the Imperial Session in 1962 to build and operate hospitals specializing in pediatric burn care. The first one opened in 1966 in Galveston, Texas, followed by those in Cincinnati and Boston two years later. The establishment of these hospitals helped raise awareness of burn injuries and appropriate care throughout the medical community.

1970s: Tremendous improvements in survival rates were made, particularly because of innovative research in excision, grafting, and intravenous feeding. In addition, pressure garments that helped lessen scarring were developed. Shriners Hospitals for Children — Cincinnati pioneered skin banking – a precursor to future methods oftissue, bone and skin procurement. In addition Shriners Hospitalsfor Children worked with theUnited States Fire Administrationand Consumer Product SafetyCommission to identify burnprevention programs for schoolsand fire departments. And finally, our Boston hospital began thefirst school re-entry programfor patients.

1980s: Outpatient clinics were added at the three burn hospitals to provide continued care after patients are discharged. Also, researchers at Shriners Hospitals for Children discovered that early surgical excision and grafting reduces infections, shortens hospital stays and improves cosmetic outcomes for patients. Finally, Burn Awareness Week, a national education campaign, was

created in an effort to raise public awareness and reduce the number of burn injuries in children.

1990s: Services were expanded at our burn hospitals. Care was made available for non-burn conditions such as port wine stains, congenital ear deformities and other complex wound and skin conditions. In addition, new programs were set up to help burn patients with psychological and social issues, including transitioning back to school and community. And, in 1997, Shriners Hospitals for Children — Northern California opened in Sacramento to serve children with orthopaedic conditions, burns and spinal cord injuries. The hospital has become the busiest pediatric burn center in the western U.S.

2000 - 2010s: Shriners Hospitals for Children continues to demonstrate and be recognized for their leadership in burn care. The hospitals in Boston and Cincinnati received the Press Ganey Summit Award for extraordinary patient satisfaction. All four burn hospitals have leaders who have served as president of the American Burn Association and three of the hospitals have hosted or co-hosted the World Burn Congress, an annual event of the Phoenix Society for Burn Survivors that brings together approximately 800 burn survivors and their families, caregivers, burn care professionals and firefighters to share experiences and support one another.

In the years and decades to come, Shriners Hospitals for Children expects to continue its leadership in pediatric burn care, and its long-standing legacy of improving the lives of children.

Shriners Hospitals for Children Featured on Fox & Friends on the morning of Aug. 21, patient Alec Cabacungan appeared on the television show Fox & Friends, sharing his story of the ways Shriners Hospitals for Children has helped to improve his quality of life. Born with osteogenesis imperfecta (OI), also known as brittle bone disease, 13-year-old Alec is a patient at our Chicago Shriners Hospital, and has captured hearts across the nation through his appearance in our latest Love is TV commercials. During his Fox & Friends interview, Alec said, “I love helping Shriners‘cause they’ve helped me so much.” Thanks to Shriners Hospitals for Children, Alec has also already begun living out his dream of becoming a sports anchor, having had the opportunity to interview NFL draftees in April as part of the 2015 NFL Draft week. Grateful for everything Shriners Hospitals has done for him, Alec was glad to have the opportunity to share his story. “It’s the least I could do,” he said.

We are thankful for all our patients who voluntarily help us increase awareness about our health care system. Widening our recognition will directly and positively impact our donations, patient referrals and membership efforts, strengthening both Shriners Hospitals for Children and Shriners International, and ensuring our continued success in the future.

With election time upon the members of EL Zaribah, I thought it timely to look back into history and find some of the places from where previous leaders have hailed. Both of these articles were originally printed in the The Coconino Sun.

Arabian TalesVolume 33 – Issue #8El Zaribah Shrine

When the members of a Shrine Temple elect a Noble to the Office of Oriental Guide, they are virtually starting that Noble through the Divan Line on the assumption that he will prove qualified for and worthy of advancement to the high office of Illustrious Potentate.

Hence it is quite evident that the nomination for Oriental Guide should be based on a thorough and accurate evaluation of character, ability, prestige, interest and experience.

A Noble can be a good fellow, a hard worker, and a loyal Shriner and yet lack the qualifications which make a good Potentate. Unless a Noble is fully qualified for the job, he is unfair to both himself and his Temple in seeking the Office or in permitting his fellow Nobles to support and promote his candidacy.

Each Shrine Temple needs and requires able, high-type leadership. The normal starting point of that leadership is the Office of Oriental Guide. The following checklist may prove helpful in evaluating potential candidates for the Office of Oriental Guide. However, no thinking man would be so naïve or presumptuous as to believe that any one Noble could embody all of the talents and qualifications set forth in this checklist.

Nevertheless, the list has practical value for self-evaluation by the Noble whose ultimate aspiration is the Office of Illustrious Potentate and for advance evaluations of potential candidates by the voting members.

Leadership | Executive Ability | Business Sense | Community Standing & InfluenceWell Poised | Good Health | Stage Presence | Competent Organizer & PromoterAbility to give & get cooperation | Support of wife & family | Possess Social Graces

Financially Secure | Energy & Vitality | Free to devote ample time | DiplomacyGood habits & Moral Character | Interest in the Shrine & Masonry in Total

Capable of delegating | Capable of building good Public and Masonic Relations

Many Temples have placed definite limitations upon their progress and standing in the community as a result of hasty, ill-considered judgment in connection with nominations for the Office of Oriental Guide. Every Noble is a good Noble . . . but it does not necessarily follow that every Noble is fitted to meet the rigorous demands imposed upon Divan Officers and the Potentates.

So let’s be fair, honest and wise in the all-important matter of electing to Office only men who are eminently qualified for the job! We all know that with honor comes responsibility. And while there is high honor associated with a Divan Office, the ensuing responsibilities entail a lot of time-consuming, energy-consuming WORK!

We are genuinely grateful that our Temple has been favored with sincere, honest, able and devoted leadership through its elected Officers. However, eternal vigilance must be wisely and thoughtfully exercised by the voting membership in order to perpetuate a high caliber of leadership.

IT'S THAT TIME AGAINORIENTAL GUIDE MUST BE SELECTED WISELY

The East-West Shrine Game: More Than Just a GameThe East-West Shrine Game® has been a staple of college football since 1925 and is the longest running college all-star game in the nation. The game has consistently proven to be a successful starting point for players seeking a professional career in football. Typically, there are more than 265 East-West Shrine Game alumni on NFL rosters each year. The game’s executive director, Harold Richardson, a former NFL general manager and coach, is confident that the game is noticed by the appropriate decision makers, and said, “With all 32 NFL teams represented by GMs, coaches and scouts during the week of the game, our players have the best opportunity to showcase their talents and receive their first glimpse of life in the NFL.” For more than 90 years, some of the best collegiate football players from across the United States and Canada have participated in the East-West Shrine Game. Currently, more than 70 game alumni have been inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, and more than 200 have a place in the College Football Hall of Fame. Many of the NFL’s most recognized and decorated players, including Tom Brady, Brett Favre and John Elway, have competed on the East-West gridiron.

A Football Tradition with a Serious MissionIn addition to serving as one of the NFL’s primary sources for players, the East-West Shrine Game benefits Shriners Hospitals for Children®, and helps support its three-part mission of providing expert specialty care to children, conducting innovative research and offering educational opportunities to medical professionals. The most important pre-game tradition is the team visit to a Shriners Hospital, which gives the players an opportunity to witness firsthand the true purpose of the game. “Going to the hospital was a very humbling experience,” said Baltimore Ravens player and 2013 East-West Shrine Game alumni, Trent Steelman. “Those kids have more courage and tenacity than any football player I know, and that I will never forget.”

The 2016 GameThe 91st annual East-West Shrine Game will take place Saturday, Jan. 23, 2016, at Tropicana Field in

St. Petersburg, Fla., and will be broadcast live on the NFL Network, with a kickoff time of 4 p.m. EST.

Tickets for the 2016 East-West Shrine Game are now available for purchase. For Shriners and their guests, a special Premium Reserved Seating Ticket Package is available in advance for $30 per person, and includes a reserved seat in a premium section, a $10 concession voucher, and a 2016 East-West Shrine Game calendar. For Potentates, Divan members and their guests, a $50 VIP Hancock Bank Club Ticket Package is also available. General Admission tickets are available for advance purchase on shrinegame.com, and on game day at Tropicana Field.

We will no longer be including a calendar within the pages of the Arabian Tales. This decision did not come easily. Too frequently, event times, activities, and plans made prior to publishing are

out-of-date by the time our magazine makes it to your mailbox. Therefore, the decision has been made to discontinue the printed calendar. We would like to direct you to the Official El Zaribah website and Facebook page for upcoming events, activities, and details.

Once again, J C Reece and Randy Peters are working to get our newest Nobles introduced to our Shrine Family through our parades.

New Nobles sign up for the El Zaribah WebNet Google Group (left side of el-zaribah.org) for event notification. When the new Nobles are available, they contact the Assistant Rabban or High Priest & Prophet. All who can help us out, are assigned to a Unit or Club for that parade/event.

parade at the circus in Scottsdale on 9-12-15. Our president, Bob Beffel, participated in the singing of the national anthem, and also played his musette. We plan on being in the Ceremonial parade on October 31, 2015, represented by our president, Noble Bob Beffel. Mounted PatrolHowdy Y’all, hope all is well with

you and yours. We had a good turnout for our

Spring ride at the beautiful EZ

Culinary UnitHi Nobles!!The fall season is underway in full

steam!! The Culinary Unit welcomes our new member: Ellis or maybe it’s

Elliott, to our unit. We work on a need to know basis and no one has yet thought I might need to know any more than that. I’m not even sure if that is his first or last name!! I just write these articles so don’t really know much, I guess. We still have our monthly meetings on the

third Tuesday of the month in our room after a great meal in the Red Fez Room at 5:30. It is great because we don’t have to serve it. We discuss items of great importance every time we meet. Hopefully they will decide if I need to know Ellis/Elliott’s last or first name. But that is enough of my ramblings. We had a terrific Circus even though the

turnout was lower than expected. It is always a good time to see all of the kids and their confused parents as they try to get the best seats and not spill on each other. They need to take training with the Culinary Unit on Spill Avoidance! We actually do try to avoid slopping somethings. We have taken to blaming the Nobles on the other side of the line.Submitted in the faith,Ken Conner, your loyal Scribe, holding until

relieved.
