TODAY IS TRANSFIGURATION SUNDAY—the last Sunday in Epiphany. In the mysterious transfiguration of Jesus before awestruck disciples, God reveals Jesus to be “My Child, my Beloved”—the very words we heard early in Epiphany at Jesus’ baptism. With the confidence that he is forever held in God’s love, Jesus then sets his face toward Jerusalem and the suffering that awaits him there. This is why the Transfiguration is remembered on the Sunday before the season of Lent, leading up to Holy Week and the cross of Good Friday.

Faith is the touching of a mystery, the perception of another dimension to everything. In faith we go beneath the surface to where the real meaning begins to shine. In simplest terms, faith sees the presence of God in all things. — Alexander Schmemann (1921-1983)

Alexander Schmemann, author of the first quote before worship, was an influential Orthodox priest. The second quote is adapted from a prayer by Thomas Merton, a Trappist monk of the Gethsemani Abbey in Kentucky. Merton was one of the most influential Catholic authors of the 20th century and an advocate of inter-religious dialogue and understanding. He died tragically at age 53. The centering prayer is by Charles de Foucauld (1858-1916). Born to an aristocratic French family, Foucauld served as an Army officer in Algeria. After a religious conversion he returned to Algeria as a Trappist monk until he was killed in an anti-French uprising. In 1933, inspired by Foucauld’s witness, a monastic order known as the Little Brothers of Jesus was formed in Algeria. Members of the order make no explicit attempt to debate or convert. They simply live among their neighbors as followers of Jesus. MUSIC NOTES

Today’s music combines traditional Spirituals and Gospel music to celebrate February as Black History Month, while also paying tribute to the life of pastor and musician Andraé Crouch. Born in 1942, along with his twin sister Sandra, Crouch made a tremendous impact in both sacred and secular music during his lifetime. He passed on January 8th of this year, at the age of 72. His sister released this statement: “Today my twin brother, womb-mate and best friend went home to be with the Lord. I tried to keep him here, but God loved him best.” REMEMBER IN PRAYER

TEN YEARS AGO TODAY, Calvary installed a new steeple! The Calvary spire had been missing since 1913 when a tornado severely damaged the original. Nearly a century later, a replica was created based on existing photos and other sources, and using modern materials to replace the original ironworks. It was installed on February 15, 2005. February also marks ten years of Chalice Hymnal in our Sanctuary as our primary hymnal and worship tool. It’s another Calvary anniversary moment—and we are thankful!
