THURSDAY AUGUST 6TH IS THE FEAST OF THE TRANSFIGURATION

The feast of the Transfiguration is ultimately about vision. The Lord brought Peter, James and John up a high mountain in order that they might come to see. Christ gave them a glimpse of his true glory. So great is this glory that they do not know what to say. Peter begins to babble and wants to build booths or tents to capture this glory. But Peter needs to understand that this is but a brief glimpse. There are still troubles ahead and another mountain to climb (Golgatha). This vision has been wonderful but God has more than bright lights to show them. The vision he confers gives direction as well as light. His direction is clear: “Listen to my Son”. Not only does this instruction complete the vision but it also ensures greater vision in the future. If we obey Jesus Christ, if we follow him he will lead us to the light and we will see all things by it. But note, where Jesus leads is not always easy. They are going to have to accept Christ’s instruction that they follow him to Jerusa-lem and the cross. Only in this way will they see all things by the light of Easter glory. Do you want to see? Are you willing to make the climb with Jesus. He gives vision if we climb. He gives vision if we are immersed in his Word. But his greatest vision lies ahead if we but take up our cross and follow him through his passion, death and resurrection. May God grant us vision. =============================================

Gospel Reflection

In today's Gospel, Jesus does what he often did as he taught people. He moves them to ever deeper levels of understanding. They had eaten the loaves that Jesus had miraculously multiplied. Now Jesus invites them to consider the "food which endures to eternal life." Fi-nally, Jesus tells them, "I am the bread of life." This bread, then, is the bread they need in order to be able to "work the works of God." We can move to deeper understanding with Jesus too. Consider the food we eat and how, ulti-mately, every morsel is a gift from God. As food nourishes our bodies for our life and work, so the Bread of Life strength-ens us to do God's work. ******************************* Questions to ponder: The people in today’s Gospel took boats so that they could seek Jesus. What do you do to seek Jesus in your life? How does the Bread of Life, Jesus, satisfy your hungers?

THE LORD GAVE THEM BREAD, BREAD FROM HEAVEN !
