The Old Plant Site

• First steps involved a major clean up of the site both inside and out.

• The Site will serve as a operational staging area and allow expansion of seed production capacity.

Cleaning Up InsideIt was obvious that the inside and outside of the facility had not been maintained for some years and required a major clean-up, painting, repairs to the water and septic systems, and removal of dilapidated

And OutsideThe old mobile home was dismantled and removed.

And Outside571 hours have been spent on the clean-up and improvements at the Cannery Road site which included the removal of 11.25 tonnes of debris.

Out with the old….Major amount of brush removal and tree falling was required as the site was well overgrown.

….and in with the new!

The old pump house had to be removed and a new one built in it’s place.

New Gate Installation

A new gate was installed at the entrance to the property to limit access and provide some security.

Constructing the Hatchery

• In early 2013 Ocean Protein began to make significant changes to the Cannery Road site.

• Hired new Hatchery Manager David Shupert and new Hatchery Technicians.

• Significant investment in new equipment.

Hatchery SuccessThe hatchery crew has had success in 2014 with the production of Pacific oyster seed.

Community Benefits• Ocean Protein Canada, at

peak operations in 2013, had 10 Sliammon First Nation members on payroll.

• Sliammon members have been trained in First Aid, vessel operations, shellfish husbandry, shellfish hatchery algae and larvae culture techniques, construction, and facility design and implementation.

Goldberg Harvesting2,931 hours have been spent harvesting oysters from the Goldberg site at a total cost of approx $55,689.00 in labour.

Cannery Road Ramp and Float

The old ramp and float at the Cannery Road site is in need of repair as the ramp has fallen into the water and the dock anchors have let go.

SE Harwood Island

• 24 hectare sub-tidal geoduck aquaculture site – 20 year Licence of Occupation has been issued; awaiting Federal Aquaculture Licence.

• 3 additional sites on Harwood Island under a BC Land Act Notation of Interest for the Sliammon Nation.

New Deepwater Site Application

In June 2013, Ocean Protein on behalf of the Sliammon First Nation made application for a 1 acre deep-water site fronting the Cannery Road up-land site. This site is now tenured and licenced for the culture of Pacific oyster, Japanese Scallop and Pacific Scallop.
