A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE DIOCESE OF AWGU The people of Awgu geographical circumscription were a deeply religious people; who before the advent of Christianity in Igboland had a common religious heritage of a belief in One, Unseen, Omnipotent God. This Almighty God was referred to as Ali Awgu (the Awgu earth goddess). No wonder such popular expressions as “Ali Awgu Chewe Nwawu” (Ali Awgu protect your child) is common among Awgu people. This belief and sense of the Sacred in this Ali Awgu is peculiar to Awgu people. This religious tradition permeated and prevailed over the social, moral, spiritual, mutual and stereological background of the people before the beginning of the Christian religion.

The remotest beginning of the Catholic presence in the Awgu division dates back to the acts of the French Catholic Missionaries that came to Eastern Nigeria under Rev. Fr. J. E. Lutz in 1885 and pitched their first tent at Holy Trinity in Onitsha. The evangelical activities of these French Holy Ghost missionaries spread to Enugu Section and consequently to Awgu sub-section by the early years of the 20th century. The missionary development in Awgu came mainly from Eke town in Udi division, and partly from Uturu in Okigwe. What we call Awgu Diocese today is therefore a historical effect of synthetic, missionary roles from Eke and Uturu Catholic Missions.

As early as 1912, Chief Onyeama (the warrant paramount Chief of Eke town) in his bid to attract Western Education for his children and people, had gathered a handful of people (Catechumen) amidst the already existing Anglican adherents that were found around Eke and Abor towns.


His invitation to the Catholic Missionaries brought Rev. Fr. Joseph Shanahan to Eke in 1914. Rev. Fr. Shanahan laid the first foundation of the old Eke Parish/School out of which sprang the spread of other Catholic Missions in the current Enugu part of Eastern Nigeria. As the incumbent and first Bishop of Awgu, Most Rev. J. I. Okoye wrote in his B.D. thesis, Christianity in Mbanabo, its Advent Growth, and Future, “It was indeed at Eke that the religious tree which spread its branches to other parts of Enugu Diocese was planted, watered and nurtured”. Eke Parish was the cradle of the faith that has today become the Dioceses of Nsukka, Awgu, Gboko, Katsina Ala, Abakaliki, Makurdi, Oturkpo, Ogoja, and Enugu. It was in 1921 that the Roman Catholic Mission set up a School / Church at Oke-Oli Ali- Awgu (St. Michael’s Awgu) which attracted over 100 converts in less than one year. They were received and harbored by Late Chief Chukwunta Nwachumolie. The first teacher of St. Michael’s School/Church, Awgu was one Mr. Ofodiamah from Ogwashi Ukwu of the present Delta State of Nigeria. And the first Holy Mass at St. Michael’s Awgu was at Oke-Ali-Ohaja Awgu by Rev. Fr. Grandin.

On the other hand, the missionary movement into Awgu from Uturu, Okigwe was orchestrated by the existence/construction of a railway line from Enugu to Portharcourt in 1915. This made Ndeaboh Railway Station a hob of so many mercantile and even evangelical interactions. This created and provided a pastoral relationship between St. Michael’s Awgu and the Roman Catholic Mission at Uturu, Okigwe (which was nearer to Awgu than Eke) that was already established in 1912. In 1926, Rev. Fr. Treich, the first priest to minister to the faithful at St. Michael’s Church, Awgu from Uturu prepared Catechumen who received their First Holy Communion on 21st October, 1926. However, given


the foundation of another Church in Awgu region at Mmaku, which was raised to a parish status in 1922, St. Michael’s Awgu was under Mmaku Parish until 1948 when she was made a parish too. Out of these two sources (Eke and Uturu), the Church continued to spread in Awgu areas with joyful yet uneasy circumstances, on both sides of the missionaries and mission converts. There were days of tension between native ancestral religion and Christianity and of oscillation of people from old traditional civilization and the emerging one that is Christian and vice versa. Given limited pastors and prevalent pressures from conflicting old and new faiths, it was really martyrdom and heroic to be a Christian then. From these rocky roots emerge today a young, of buoyant and vibrant Awgu ecclesiastical circumscription.

Awgu was created a diocese by His Holiness, Pope Benedict XVI on the 8th of July, 2005. On the 29th day of September, 2005, it was canonically erected and Most Rev. John Ifeanyichukwu Okoye ordained and enthroned as its first bishop.

1. Candles are blessed as prescribed in the Missal.

2. The faithful gather in a suitable place outside the Church. They hold in their hands candles which they light at the beginning of the rite. The celebrant wears a white chasuble or a cope.

Season of LentThe Season of Lent is a preparation for the celebration of Easter. The liturgy prepares the catechumens for the celebration of the Paschal mystery by the various stages of Christian initiation; it also prepares the faithful, who recall their baptism and do penance in preparation for Easter.

4. In Mass of the Season the Gloria is omitted.

5. On Weekdays of Lent the Benedictus antiphon,verse and prayer of an optional Memorial,occurring on a particular day, may be saidafter the prayer at Lauds that day.

6. The Weekdays of Lent from Ash Wednesday toSaturday before Palm Sunday takeprecedence over the memorials of Saints.The prayer of the Memorial of a Saint,occurring on a particular day, may be said inplace of the collect of the Mass of that day (IH23 7-23 9 cfpp xiv-xv no 3).

7. Only when some genuine need or pastoraladvantage requires it, may an appropriateMass for various needs and occasions becelebrated (IM, 374) Votive Masses and dailyMasses for the Dead are not


permitted (IM381).

8. The altar is not decorated with flowers duringLent. Musical instruments are not used excepton Laetare Sunday and for Solemnities andfeasts or to sustain singing.

9. In the celebration of marriage, both withinand outside Mass, the Nuptial Blessing isalways given. The spouses should bereminded of the penitential nature of theSeason of Lent (OM32).

HOLY WEEKIn Holy Week the Church celebrates the mysteries of salvation accomplished by Christ in the last days of His earthly life, from His messianic entry into Jerusalem, until his blessed Passion and glorious Resurrection.

PALM SUNDAYNOTES

Palm Sunday of the Lord’s Passion, a day on which the Church enters upon the mystery of the Death, Burial and Resurrection of her Lord, brings together the triumphal procession of Christ as King and the proclamation of His Passion. Both aspects of the paschal mystery should be explained in the catechesis of the day.

1. Red vestments are used in all Masses, in the Divine Office and for the Blessing and Procession of Palms.

2. Our Lord’s entry into Jerusalem is commemorated by the procession or by a Solemn Entrance Ceremony before the principal mass. This SSolemn Entrance Ceremony, but not the Procession, may be repeated before any Mass at which there is a large congregation.


3. The people should gather in a lesser church or in another suitable place outside the church to which the procession is directed. The faithful take part in the procession singing and waving branches of the palm tree or other trees in their hands. The priest and his ministers do the same. The branches are blessed by him so that they may be carried in procession, but also so that they may be devoutly kept in the home so as to call to mind the victory of Christ as celebrated by today’s procession.

4. To commemorate the Lord’s entry into Jerusalem, apart from the procession, the missal proposes a solemn entry, to be enacted wherever it is not possible to hold a procession outside the church. This solemn entry is to take place before the main Mass, with the faculty of repeating it before another Mass which is habitually celebrated with a large gathering of the people. The Missal also proposes a simple entry, to be enacted at other Masses.

5. After the procession or the Solemn Entrance Ceremony, Mass begins with the collect, therefore the sign of the cross, penitential rite and other rites pertaining to the beginning of Mass are omitted.

6. The celebrant may wear a cope or chasuble during the procession. For


the spiritual good of the faithful it is appropriate that the narrative of the passion be read in its entirety, without omitting the other readings which precede it. After the reading of the passion, there should be a homily, even if only a brief one.

7. The passion narrative is read without candles or incense and without the usual greeting and signing the book.

8. Where it is not possible to celebrates Mass, there should be held a Liturgy of the Word about the Lord’s messianic entry and his Passion, either on the Saturday evening or at a suitable time on the Sunday.

This concelebration is a sign of the communion between the priests and their bishop, and hence as many priests as possible should take part in it, as witnesses at the confection of the chrism and as fellow workers of their bishop, in whose sacred ministry for the building up, sanctification and government of the people of God they participate. Thus is manifest in a clear way the unity of the priesthood and the sacrifice of Christ living on in the Church. The faithful, too, should regularly take part and receive the Eucharist at this Mass. The newly blessed Oils should be borne with honour to the


Churches. The faithful should be instructed on the use of the sacred Oils and their efficaciousness in the Christian life. If there are notable difficulties which prevent clergy and people gathering with the Bishop on this day, it is permissible to anticipate the blessing of the Holy Oils on another day, on condition tha the day chosen is close to Easter and that the proper Mass is used.

THE PASCHAL TRIDUUM Only the Chrism Mass and the Mass of the Lord’s Supper are permitted today.

NOTES1. The Mass is celebrated at a suitable time in

the evening.The whole celebration should be held where they may be enacted with dignity and decorum.

2. The tabernacle is completely empty.3. The church bells may be rung during the Gloria and

are not rung again until the Gloria of the Easter Vigil Mass.

4. For pastoral reasons the local Ordinary may permit an evening Mass in churches, in public and semi-public Oratories, and if there is real necessity a morning Mass also, but this applies only if the faithful cannot attend the Evening Mass. Care should be taken lest any celebration of this kind beundertaken for the advantage of private individuals and lest it prejudice the evening Mass.

5. Priests who have concelebrated Mass earlier in the day may concelebrate the Evening Mass of the Lord's Supper.


6. In accordance with a most ancient tradition of the Church, the celebration of Mass without a congregation is prohibited today. It is appropriate therefore, that small religious communities come together in more important churches, so as to foster participation in the faithful. Likewise the faithful from a number of lesser parishes in the care of a single priest should, if possible, gather in the main church of the area to take part in the sacred rites.

7. Where, however, two or more parishes areentrusted to the care of a single parish priest, eachparish having a considerable congregation offaithful and the possibility of performing thecelebrations with dignity and solemnity, the parishpriest has the faculty to repeat the celebrations ofthe Easter Triduum, with due regard for othernorms.

8. After the Mass of the Lord's Supper the altar isstripped privately and crucifixes, if not removedfrom the church, are veiled.

9. While the Gloria is being sung, the bells are rung.From the end of this hymn the bells are then silentuntil the Easter Vigil, unless the EpiscopalConference or the Bishop of the diocese forappropriate reasons decides otherwise.

10. The washing of feet, which according to thetradition for this day is done for a selected number ofmen, shows forth the service and the love of Christ,who came not to be served but to serve. It isappropriate that this tradition be maintained andits true meaning be explained.

11. In the procession bearing the gifts it is fitting that'there be included the gifts destined for the poor,especially gifts which have been collected duringLent as the fruits of penance. While this happens theUbi caritas is sung. At the end of the prayer aftercommunion, omitting the other concluding rites, aprocession is formed which makes its way throughthe church with incense and candles, bearing theEucharist to the chapel of reservation. The faithfulshould be reminded to spend a suitable length oftime during the night, according to circumstances


of time and place, in adoration before the BlessedSacrament reserved, in such a way, however, thatafter midnight the adoration take place withoutsolemnity.

12. The procession and the reposition of the BlessedSacrament should not take place in churches whereit is not intended to celebrate the solemn Liturgy ofthe Lord's Passion on Good Friday.

Paschal TimeNOTES

The weekdays of Advent from 17 to 24 December take precedence over the memorials of Saints, which may therefore be celebrated only in the particular form laid down by the liturgical books (IH 237-239; IM 355a: see pages xiv and xv no. 3). Only when some genuine need or pastoral advantage requires it may an appropriate Mass for various needs and occasions be celebrated (IM 374). Votive Masses and daily Masses for the Dead are forbidden (IM 381). Office: Antiphons, Hymns for the Office of readings, for Lauds and for Vespers, Intercessions, etc. are I proper for each day. See Breviary Pp 117ff. Mass: Special Readings and Responsorial Psalms are given for each day, they should be used instead of those indicated for the weekdays of the third week of Adven.,
