An Amazing Technicolor Evening! by Nancy Swanson !On July 24, 13 theatre lovers enjoyed dinner and a performance of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat at Broadway Palm. Bill Padoll and Joel Barlow organized the evening for the Brotherhood. Denise and Peter Simenauer, Merle and Marc Nudel, Carin and Lee Hanan, Nancy Swanson and Neil Marlo and Rabbi Buchen joined the Padolls and Barlows. !Many of us saw Joseph years ago. This performance was updated with lots of new songs, costumes and humorous moments. A number of children performed – always adorable. The songs took us to France and Jamaica, quite a trip from Egypt. The staging may have changed but the story of Joseph and his brothers remained the same with its age-old tale of what today we might call a slightly dysfunctional family whose saga has a happy ending. (Well, as happy as a Jewish story can be, anyway!) !Thanks to Bill and Joel and the Brotherhood for an evening of good food, enjoyable theatre and excellent companionship.

Brotherhood Notes! by!Joel Barlow

The  TBS  Brotherhood.

As we approach the High Holidays, we are reminded of the job our service clubs do for the temple. Today we are going to just concentrate on the TBS Brotherhood. The brotherhood goes back to the inception of TBS in Cape Coral. The brotherhood donates funding, when the treasury runs a little short of funds. The brotherhood funding comes from social functions given at TBS as well as outside of TBS. All of the monies earned, are earmarked for TBS eventually. We sponsor Bingo, a Latke Party, a Golf Tournament , the Honoree Banquet, and a Family Picnic. I am sure I left something out. They have supplied funds for the Rabbi’s office remodel. They also act as ushers at services. To the men of the temple that do not belong to the Brotherhood, you are missing a chance to help the temple, and enjoy an active social life with your temple brothers. The work is not hard, the meetings are fun, and your contribution of work keeps the temple viable. For the new members, it is a way to make new temple friends and participate in the Brotherhood activities. To join see President Joel Barlow, and start having fun with the TBS Brotherhood. Shalom,Frank

Brotherhood Notes

August, 2014

Summer is supposed to be a quiet time at Temple Beth Shalom, however the Brotherhood has been quite busy. On July 20, we organized and sponsored the annual TBS Picnic at Jaycee Park in Cape Coral. The picnic was attended by thirty-eight congregants. A good time was had by all! Thanks to the Brothers who grilled and helped.

On July 24, the Brotherhood organized a trip to Broadway Palm Theatre to see "Joseph and his Technicolor Coat". Fourteen congregants joined us for a really spectacular evening.

At long last, the Brotherhood-sponsored renovation of the Rabbi's office began the first week in August. In subsequent weeks, Brotherhood members plan to paint and install new office furniture. We expect to be finished before the High Holidays.

All work and no play....The Brotherhood is planning an off-shore fishing trip later this summer. Judging from previous years, this trip will be fun for those who fish. See Harvey Wolfson for particulars.

The New Year is almost here. The Brotherhood has planned a long list of activities, including our regular Bowling League (begins Oct. 12. see Bill Padoll), and the Annual Samuel S. Belkin Golf Tournament (date to be determined). Of course, we will continue to support our Temple in a variety of ways, including the Shabbat Greeter/Closure Program, Ushers when needed, construction of Sukkot booth and Latke Fry at Hanukkah (Dec. 14).

To be successful, all of these activities require the financial and active support of our Temple men. Please join the Brotherhood by sending your $25.00 check (made out to TBS Brotherhood) to the Temple or by giving it to any of our officers: Joel Barlow, President; Bill Padoll, Vice President; Stuart Berman, Treasurer; Marty Brucker, Secretary.

L’Shana Tova,

Joel Barlow

TBS  PICNIC

by  Joel  Barlow

TBS Brotherhood revived an old tradition by sponsoring an "Old Fashioned" Temple picnic at Gazebo #1 Jaycee Park, Cape Coral, Sunday July 24, 2014. The weather was hot and sunny, made bearable by the shade of beautiful pine trees and a slight cooling breeze off the river. The Brotherhood grilled hot dogs and hamburgers and provided all the fixings. Thirty-eight congregants gathered and provided delicious "pot-luck" dishes to share. All had a pleasant time and look forward to next year's picnic.

Having just returned from a month long hiatus of traveling in our motorhome to the upper east coast and then to the mid-west, we are finally back home and very happy to be here. Because we are not snow-birds anymore, this will be our first time to celebrate the High Holy Days with our Temple Beth Shalom family. We are very much looking forward to it. !First of all, I want to thank Alan Weissman for his hard work and dedication for chairing the fundraising committee for TBS. I hope that Alan will continue to help out with his successful endeavors which brought TBS many financial rewards. I have just begun to look into what the future may hold for TBS Fundraising. If you have any ideas or would like to be a part of the fundraising committee, please let me know. We are still in need of TBS volunteers to help with elections. Your volunteer time at elections is then turned into a profit for TBS. Please contact Wendy Blyveis for more information. Advertisers are needed for the Business section of the Shofar. If you are in touch with any local business owners, please encourage them to advertise with us. Their ads are welcome and all our members are encouraged to patronize them! Let me know if you have a business in mind and we will be sure that they are contacted. Please put your spring vacation plans on hold! As a Fundraiser and also as a wonderful time to spend with fellow TBS members and Rabbi and Irv Buchen, we are in the process of planning a Temple Beth Shalom cruise for February or March of 2015. Details will soon be forthcoming. !May the coming year be a sweet one for you and yours and bring you good luck, good health, happiness, peace, prosperity and most of all...love. The TBS Breakfast Food Drive was a huge success. We took many loads of breakfast foods to CCMI and we are sure that many Cape Coral children had breakfast each day because of your generosity. Thank you so very much to all who donated to this worthy cause. Today when we dropped off the Panera Bread and pastries at CCMI, they greeted us with open arms and said, "We are so glad that you are here. We are completely out of bread. Thank you so very much!" That is pretty much how we are always greeted when we arrive with donations. They are always so very grateful! Thank you to all of the volunteers who pick up weekly from Panera and take the items to CCMI. We are also doing a weekly pick-up of a van-load full of food (bread, pastries, fresh produce) from Harry Chapin in Fort Myers and bringing it to CCMI. For those of you that are interested, you might want to check out the website of CCMI so that you know what happens to the food and donations you give. If you would like to help, let me know. Here is the link to the website http://www.ccmileecounty.com Once again we are doing a High Holy Day Food Drive and I urge you to be generous. I wish you all a very happy, healthy and sweet New Year! !Peter

!As we approach the Days of Awe, we are again filled with that sense of renewal that we are so fortunate to experience each year. We’ve had the opportunity to pause, reflect, repent, forgive and rededicate ourselves to a New Year of observing the Commandments. !Here at Temple Beth Shalom, we are a family. We conduct ourselves as most families do, feeling free to both agree and disagree, while still having the connection and commitment to keep us together. I think we have something rare here, something particularly important to many of us who have no family close by. And, amazingly enough, our arms and hearts are always open to new family members. !Neil and I feel so blessed to be a part of this Temple family. Social Activities! by!Maxine Morris

This summer we basked in nostalgia in July with a big group turning out to see the movie "Jersey Boys," followed, of course, by a nosh. In August we met for lunch at El Tarasco, a nice, family-owned Mexican restaurant in town. We always seem to enjoy ourselves whenever we get together. !We have some big events on the planning board for next year. In the Fall/Winter we will have a private docent tour, led by my friend Roberta Montalbano, at the Baker Museum of Artis Naples. We will see an exhibit of paintings of the American West, as well as some of the permanent collection, including two large pieces by the sculptural glass artist, Dale Chihuly. In the Spring, we plan to see a perennial favorite, “West Side Story” at the Broadway Palm Dinner Theater. And of course, we will continue to offer a novel, interesting fun stuff to do together throughout the year ahead. !Special thanks to new member Marcia Strumwater for joining me on Social Activites. Maxine Morris

The committee is working on several ideas to increase membership that is the life blood of our Temple. Without new members, we would not exist.

First, we are considering a Family Movie Event to invite our families with children and to invite other Jewish families to join us that are unaffiliated. We hope those unaffiliated will like what they see, and join.

Second, we are planning a Membership appreciation at the Oneg Shabbat. New members will introduce themselves, and tell us about themselves.

Third, we are purchasing a book that has helpful information on increasing membership.

Fourth, we are contacting our members in the Real Estate business that may know of Jewish families that are buying homes in our community so we can invite them to attend our services.

Fifth, we are looking into arranging for a speaker to talk about current events that interest Jewish families. We would invite Jewish families in Lee Co. to attend.

We hope some of these activities listed above will attract new members.

Also, we now have a Caring Committee that calls those members who are ill or distressed so they know we haven’t forgotten them. Retention of members is just as important as increasing members. If you know of someone who is ill or hasn’t been seen for some time, please notify Herb Gallop at (239) 599-4373 or [email protected] who will contact them.

Sisterhood is looking to get started with lots of great plans for the new year. !Sunday September 14th, Denise and Peter have invited us for a beach day and pot luck at their Tort Myers Beach condo. !Monday December 8th there will be a Chinese dinner and gift exchange. !Saturday night January 10th we will have a Bingo night. !Sisterhood will be sending out details for all events that are planned. !The Sisterhood will be setting up a Friday night Oneg Hostess schedule. Anyone interested in volunteering their time please contact Georgette Bothner or Suzie Hershfield for more information. !The Sisterhood is looking or fundraising ideas or just a fun event. !The Sisterhood wants to wish everyone a very Happy, Healthy and Sweet New Year !Shalom !

If you know anyone Jewish that doesn’t belong, please invite them to services and give me their name and address. We will send them an invitation to attend our Shabbat Service

Sisterhood and Brotherhood Membership Dinner!! ! by ! ! !! Jerry Razowsky

The Sisterhood and Brotherhood sponsored a delightful buffet dinner in June for the membership drive. Over forty members were in attendance. The food was scrumptious. After dinner the Sisterhood and Brotherhood had short meetings regarding future activities, fundraising, hosting ideas for Onegs, and other social events for the coming year.

Chuck Grinnell celebrates 25years as Temple Beth Shalom

organist

Chuck Grinnell deserves to be honored for his lengthy and loyal services to Temple Beth Shalom. His background was more of a wonderlust, but when he finally settled down in Florida he found a home where he is truly appreciated. Chuck started out in Creston, Iowa, and took up the piano at age 12. By 8th grade he was already a church organist. In Jr. college, Chuck worked as an inspector at Purolator Corp., which allowed him to buy a new Camaro. At the University of Iowa he became an assistant to a quadriplegic friend, which earned him free room and board. At U of Iowa, Chuck majored in “Chinese,” making lots of friends who were Chinese students. His friends eventually convinced him to go to Taiwan to immerse himself and really learn to speak the language. They arranged for Chuck to stay with a Professor couple who had three daughters; the family members were to learn English while Chuck learned to speak Chinese. Chuck also met middle-eastern people who had come to Taiwan to learn electronics; but all the books were written in English, so Chuck was able to earn money teaching them the books that were written in Chinese and English. Chuck also taught English at local schools which earned him enough money in his four years in Taiwan to take a yearlong trip home via India, Turkey, Italy, France, England and Scotland. Returning to America, Chuck started playing piano in a group in New York, which got a gig at “Windows on the World,” the restaurant atop the World Trade Center. A U.S. State Department official heard the group, found out that none of them smoked, or drank, and so recruited all ten for a U.S.O. tour 1976, including Scotland, England, Italy, Spain, Germany, and Ethiopia. Upon returning to the states Chuck went back to Creston to be with his family until 1984, when he moved to Florida to find economic housing for himself and his widowed mother. He first moved to Matlacha, but then found the house he wanted in North Fort Myers. Chuck worked his music magic at the Masonic Lodge, on gigs, got his real estate license, and earned extra income selling homes.

Now he was settled, but when he drove back to Iowa to collect his mom, she passed away while he was in route. Chuck started playing at Temple Beth Shalom in 1984 under Rabbi Cohen. The Temple had a “yucky old organ,” which Chuck was able to replace with a donated organ, the same one still in use. Four years later, while Chuck worked at Fletcher Music, he donated the piano that is at the Temple. Chuck also got a piano donated to Unity Church in Fort Myers. When they heard Chuck play they also hired him. Chuck has been a friend of so many congregants for so many years he is almost a fixture in our Congregation. Besides music, Chuck has always maintained his love of culture and of language and he truly sees no difference between people of different religions. He is truly a renaissance man.

Rabbi Israel Baal Shem Tov (1698-1760), the founder of the Chassidic movement, was once asked: "Why is it that Chassidim burst into song and dance at the slightest provocation? Is this the behavior of a healthy, sane individual?"

The Baal Shem Tov responded with a story:

Once, a musician came to town -- a musician of great but unknown talent. He stood on a street corner and began to play.

Those who stopped to listen could not tear themselves away, and soon a large crowd stood enthralled by the glorious music whose equal they had never heard. Before long they were moving to its rhythm, and the entire street was transformed into a dancing mass of humanity.

A deaf man walking by wondered: Has the world gone mad? Why are the townspeople jumping up and down, waving their arms and turning in circles in middle of the street?

"Chassidim," concluded the Baal Shem Tov, "are moved by the melody that issues forth from every creature in G-d's creation. If this makes them appear mad to those with less sensitive ears, should they therefore cease to dance?"
