Kendell HaleHead Coach (7th Season)Northwest Missouri St., 1990

Kendell Hale is in his seventh season as the head coach of the UMKC men’s and women’s tennis program . Overall, the 2013-14 season will be Hale’s 20th as a collegiate head coach, where he has compiled a 364-267 overall combined men’s and women’s record . On the women’s side, he has a record of 53-77 at UMKC, while boasting a 76-55 mark with the men .

Hale has orchestrated an amazing turnaround with the men’s and women’s tennis programs since joining the department in 2008 . He has guided both the men’s and women’s squads to numerous school-record win totals and has produced four Summit League regular season titles, four Summit League Tournament crowns and four NCAA Tournament appearances . He was also selected at the 2010 USTPA National Coach of the Year for his turnaround effort, as well as 2009 USPTA Missouri Valley College Coach of the Year, the 2011 Summit League Men’s Coach of the Year, and 2013 Summit League Women’s Coach of the Year .

In six seasons at the helm, Hale has coached 23 all-league honorees on the men’s side and 12 all-league selections on the women’s side . He’s also coached three Summit League Players of the Year and three Summit League Newcomers of the Year .

He has also coached the five winningest players in school history on the women’s side, and four of the five top career win leaders on the men’s side .

The 2013 version of the ‘Roos won the Summit League regular season title for the fourth straight year, with a perfect 5-0 mark in conference play, before sweeping through the Summit League Tournament for the third straight year to advance to the NCAA Tournament, where they fell to No . 1 ranked UCLA . There were four all-league selections in Nino Hasandedic, Grant Fleming, Abdul Alawadhi, and Tomas Patino .

In 2012, the squad overcame numerous injuries early in the season and captured a share of its third consecutive regular season Summit League title, while hosting the conference tournament and storming through the bracket without dropping a point in wins over South Dakota State and IUPUI to claim the league tournament crown and advance to the NCAA Tournament . UMKC had four all-conference selections, as well as the Player (Grant Fleming) and Newcomer (Tomas Patino) of the Year in the league .

In 2011, he led the men to the Summit League regular season and tournament titles (went 16-7, 6-0), while helping the women to a school record win total (12) and an appearance in the championship match of the league tournament for the first time in school history .

Nino Hasandedic was named the men’s Summit League Newcomer and Player of the Year as well, and was named League Coach of the Year for his efforts .

During the 2010 season, Hale led the men’s team to a 17-7 overall record, which included a school record 11-match winning streak . The 17 victories were the most in a single season in the record books . The squad finished a perfect 6-0 in league play during the regular season without dropping a single team point, as it claimed The Summit League regular season title . The ‘Roos advanced to the league tournament final for the second straight year before being upset by third-seeded Oral Roberts .

Hale’s student-athletes produced unprecedented success on the court, as senior Patrick Smith was named The Summit League Player of the Year . Smith along with Bret Berryman, Serge Ristivojevic and Gustavo Guerin also received all-Summit League honors . Ristivojevic broke the school record for single season singles victories (18), while Smith and Berryman set the single season doubles mark (18) .

In 2009, Hale guided the men’s squad to a 14-7 overall record and a 5-1 mark in Summit League play . After finishing as the regular season runner-up, Hale led UMKC to a Summit League Tournament title and an NCAA Tournament berth with a tight 4-2 victory over top-seeded Oral Roberts . The tournament final win gave the ‘Roos their 14th victory of the season, which tied the then school record for single season victories . A trio of players earned all-league honors, while Bret Berryman was tabbed The Summit League Newcomer of the Year .

Under Hale’s guidance, Patrick Smith closed out the 2009 season with six straight victories to give him a total of 14 singles wins on the year . The 14 victories were tied for the second most wins in the single season record books . Hale also led the ‘Roos to unprecedented success at the Wilson/ITA Central Region Championships, as he coached players to the Round of 16 for the first time in school history .

The Kangaroos also have excelled in the classroom under Hale’s watch . The men’s team earned ITA all-Academic Team honors in 2008 and 2012 and the women’s squad received the distinction in 2008, 2009 and 2012 . Additionally, 11 student-athletes have been selected as ITA Scholar Athletes, 50 have been named to The Summit League Winter/Spring Academic all-League team and 34 were Commissioner’s List of Academic Excellence honorees .

Prior to becoming a Kangaroo, Hale spent 13 seasons as the head coach at Rockhurst University, where he guided the Hawks to nine NCAA Tournament appearances in 10 years as an NCAA Division II

university . He led Rockhurst to the Midwest Region Championships from 1995-97, and he coached six top-30 Division II student-athletes . His team finished the 1997 season as the 12th ranked team in the nation in the NAIA, which led to him being named the NAIA Midwest Region Coach of the Year .

Hale has been honored at every level since joining the coaching profession . He is the only coach to be named the USPTA College Coach of the Year five times (2002, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2009), and he has been selected as the Wilson/ITA Coach of the Year on three occasions (2001, 2002, 2007) . In 2003, Hale was also selected as the NCAA Central Region Coach of the Year .

Hale also was selected as the USPTA Coach of the Year in 2001, the USPTA Missouri Club Professional of the Year in 1998, and he was the USA Tennis Coordinator for Kansas City in 1997 .

Not only did Hale have success on the court, but he also was successful in the classroom as well, as his teams at Rockhurst captured eight Team Academic all-America awards .

In addition to his duties with the Hawks, Hale has served as the tennis director at Oakwood Country Club since 2004 . From 1997-99, he was the head tennis professional at the Plaza Tennis Center, where the venue was named the Facility of the Year in 1998 . Before going to the PTC, Hale served as the head assistant tennis professional/junior coordinator at Kansas City Country Club from 1991-95 .

Hale has also been a United States Professional Tennis Association board member for 10 years, and he is the USPTA tester for the Kansas City region .

Hale’s playing career began at Paris Junior College in Paris, Texas, where he was ranked 43rd in the NJCAA national rankings . After a successful two-year stint, Hale played two seasons at Northwest Missouri State, where he helped the Bearcats to a No . 12 ranking in the NCAA Division II poll . He was the only NWMSU player to win a MIAA conference title in 1990 and during that same year, he was the conference doubles runner-up .

Hale earned his bachelor of science degree in psychology/sociology from Northwest Missouri State in 1990 . He then earned his masters of religious education from the Midwestern Seminary in 1997 .

Cassidy Mears was named the top assistant coach in the summer of 2012 . He came to UMKC after spending the 2011-12 season as an assistant with Rockhurst .

In his first season with the ‘Roos in 2012-13, he helped the men’s team to a Summit League regular season and tournament title, while the women’s squad advanced to their second ever Summit League Tournament Championship match appearance, and a runner-up regular season finish . The squads combined for seven all-league performers as well (4 men, 3 women) .

A Shawnee, Kansas product, he played four years at Brigham Young University and finished his career as the third winningest player in school history . He helped his team finish No . 22 in the nation as a senior (2010), earning conference Player of the Week honors four times during the year . He also served as team captain for three seasons, and went undefeated in conference play during both his junior and senior campaigns .

Mears was a three-time all-conference and academic all-conference selection during his time there, and won the Floyd Johnson Service Award as well . He also served as the SAAC President for the entire student-athlete body at BYU .

Since coming back to Kansas City, he has been an instructor/professional for Kansas City United Tennis, coaching youth players all the way up to

high-level junior and high school players . He also hosted and directed numerous tournaments during his time there .

In his season at Rockhurst, he helped organize travel, practice structure, and team dynamics . He helped the Hawks to their best finish in school history as well .

A product of Bishop Miege High School, he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in exercise science with a minor in business management from BYU in 2010 . He is currently finishing his master’s degree in business administration from Rockhurst .

Craig Gansen was inducted into the 2010 UMKC Athletics Hall of Fame on Jan . 22, 2011 . Gansen was a four-time

all-Mid-Con selection as a ‘Roo, earning first team honors from 1997-99 and a second team accolade in 1996 . Gan-sen led his squad to a pair of regular season titles (1998, 1999) and a Mid-Con Tournament crown in 1999, which led the ‘Roos to their first ever NCAA Tournament berth . Gansen closed out his career as the school record holder

for singles wins (48) and singles winning percentage ( .667), while also being tied for the most doubles victories

in the annals (44) .

Chancellor Leo E. Morton

Leo E. Morton was named Chancellor of the University of

Missouri-Kansas City on December 15, 2008. Prior to assuming the Chancellorship, Leo was employed by Aquila, Inc, joining the firm in January 1994 as vice president, performance management. He was named senior vice president in 1996 with responsibility for re-engineering, corporate procurement and environmental services. Morton assumed additional duties for the management of human resources in 1997 and information technology in 1998. He was named senior vice president and chief administrative officer in 2000 as he also assumed responsibility for additional corporate services.

Prior to joining Aquila, Morton’s management career spanned 26 years in a wide range of engineering and manufacturing positions with AT&T Microelectronics, Bell Laboratories, General Motors, Rust Engineering Company and Corning Glass.

Morton has been a University of Missouri-Kansas City trustee since 2000 and was in his third year as chairman of the Board of Trustees when he stepped down to serve as the university’s interim chancellor. Previously, he was a member on UMKC’s Center for the City board and chaired the community relations committee of the Trustees.

He is chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Menorah Medical Center and chairman of the advisory board of Prep-KC, a major regional youth educational development organization. Morton also serves as 2nd vice chairman of the board of Swope Community Enterprises. In addition, he serves on the Board of Trustees for MRI, the Economic Development Corporation, the Kansas City Area Development Council, the Starlight Theatre, the independent advisory commission on racial profiling for the Overland Park Police Department, the Ironhorse Golf committee and as a commissioner for the Local Investment Commission.

Morton has a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Tuskegee University, and a master’s degree in management from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Director of Athletics Carla Wilson

CARLA WILSONDirector of Athletics/SWA

Carla Wilson is serving as the Interim Director of Athletics, as of July 1, 2013. She was promoted to the Senior Associate Athletics Director for Business and Administration in September 2007. Prior to her appointment, Wilson served as the Assistant Athletics Director for Business Operations for nine years.

Wilson is responsible for the human resources and business operations of the department, as well as all day-to-day operations in the absence of the Director of Athletics. Wilson is responsible for the preparation, development and maintenance of the budgets for all 16 sports and nine administrative areas of the department. She is also the sport administrator for women’s basketball, men’s soccer, and men’s and women’s tennis. Throughout her career, she has been the sport administrator for softball, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s cross country, and men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track and field. Wilson serves as a member of the Director of Athletics senior staff.

As Senior Woman Administrator, Wilson is the highest ranking female involved with the management of UMKC’s Intercollegiate Athletics program, and represents UMKC in dealings with The Summit League and the NCAA. She also partakes in program-wide administrative responsibilities, including decision making at the institutional, conference and national levels. She collaboratively addresses departmental goals, supports women’s interests and supports and helps manage diversity, gender equity and Title IX matters.

Wilson, who is an active member of the National Association of Collegiate Women Athletics Administrators, the College Athletic Business Management Association and the Minority Opportunities Athletic Association, is a 2010 graduate of the NCAA Fellows Leadership Development Program. The 18-month program was developed with the specific goal of enhancing the employment and leadership opportunities for racial/ethnic minorities and women at the senior management level of intercollegiate athletics administration. She is also a 2009 NACWAA HERS East graduate, and was named NACWAA Division I Administrator of the Year in 2012.

Wilson has also been active on NCAA committees during her time at UMKC. In 2010, Wilson began a four-year term on the NCAA Division I Women’s Softball Committee, and from 2004-07, she served on the Division I NCAA Men’s and Women’s Tennis Committee. Both committees are responsible for selecting the teams that compete for the opportunity to play for a national championship. Since 1999, Wilson has also served on the NCAA Region V Post Graduate Scholarship Committee.

A 24-year career Kangaroo, prior to Wilson’s 15 years in athletics, she served UMKC as a budget specialist in the University’s administrative affairs office for four years, where she was responsible for assisting in the preparation of the University’s $159 million budget. From 1988-93, she also served in the accounting department as a senior accountant.

Wilson graduated from UMKC in 1988 with a bachelor’s degree in accounting. She and her husband Kevin, have four children, Shae, Tristan, Kevin Jr., and Kylan, and they reside in Olathe, Kan.

Senior Administrative Staff

Dickson joined UMKC in August 2006 following a successful tenure at Time Warner Cable/Metro Sports, and was named to her current position in July 2007. She oversees all of the marketing, promotions and ticketing efforts for UMKC, also serving as the sport supervisor for women’s soccer. While at TWC, she was responsible for educating Time Warner sales departments nationwide on network programming as well as creating promotional material and advertising packages for TWC’s client networks. Additionally, she coordinated the highly successful www.beepbeep.com, an automotive marketplace website in Kansas City that averaged 30 participating dealerships under her oversight. Dickson has also served in a volunteer capacity for the Kansas City Sports Commission and WIN for KC since 2005.

Dickson earned a bachelor of science degree in public relations with a minor in photography from Central Missouri State University in May 2002 and was a four-year letterwinner for the women’s soccer team. She and her husband Ryan reside in Kansas City, Mo.

Jessica DicksonAssistant Athletics Director for External Relations

Josh Snyder was hired on as the Associate Director of Athletics for Compliance on May 31, 2011. Snyder comes to UMKC from Boise State University, where he served as the Executive Director for NCAA Compliance. Prior to his appointment at Boise State, Snyder spent seven years at Iowa State in several different leadership roles. While at Boise State, Snyder served as a senior staff member for the Compliance Department. He was responsible for all compliance operations and efforts. He began his appointment with the Cyclones in 2003 as the Director of Compliance and moved up the ranks to be named an Assistant Athletics Director in two years.

Snyder received a bachelor’s of science in exercise and sports sciences from Iowa State University in 1995. He went on to graduate Cum Laude from Creighton University School of Law in 2001, ranking in the top-15 in his class. Snyder was admitted to practice before all Nebraska state and federal courts.

He has served on multiple NAAC Committee’s and presented at several NCAA Regional Rules Seminars. While at Creighton, Snyder received two American Jurisprudence Awards for finishing first in his class in a course, was on the Editorial Staff and was a published author.

Josh SnyderSenior Associate Athletics Director for Compliance and Development

Aulet, who began his duties at UMKC in May 2007, oversees game operations for each of UMKC’s 16 inter-collegiate sports and serves as point person for construction of new athletic facilities for the Kangaroos. Additionally, he serves as the coordinator for the strength and conditioning departments, and is the sports supervisor for men’s soccer and volleyball. Prior to his tenure at UMKC, he served as equipment manager at the University of Kansas, where he was responsible for maintenance and inventory of all equipment for KU’s Olympic sports programs. He was also the departmental contact for Coca-Cola and served as the chair of the KUAC Staff Advisory Committee during the 2003-04 school year.

Aulet received his bachelor of arts degree in management from Hiram College in 1995, earning a master of arts degree with a sports administration concentration from Kent State University in 1999. He and his wife Kerrianne have two daughters - Danielle and Samantha - and reside in Lawrence, Kan.

Ron AuletAssociate Athletics Director for Operations/Facilities

Gurney joined the UMKC Athletics staff in August 2008, following a highly successful six-year tenure at The Ohio State Univer-sity, where she worked in the Student-Athlete Support Services Office. At UMKC, Gurney is currently overseeing the athletics academic unit with a combined GPA of 3.09, a graduation success rate of 83 percent and a comprehensive academic progress rate of 966, which is the highest in The Summit League.

For the Buckeyes, she assisted in the academic support of 949 student-athletes in 36 varsity sports, specializing in preparing football student-athletes to meet educational requirements and traveling with the team to the 2008 BCS National Champion-ship game to monitor academic development. Alongside her work in the athletics department at OSU, she has also served as an undergraduate instructor in the history department and assisted in the organization of several international conferences for the Mershon Center for International Security Studies from 2005-08.

Gurney, who swam competitively on the national level in Canada, earned her bachelor of arts degree in history from Simon Fraser University in Vancouver, British Columbia, in 2000. She also earned her master’s degree in history at SFU in 2002 and is a candidate for a doctorate in history from Ohio State. She and her husband reside in Kansas City, Mo.

Victor F. Swyden Athletics Training FacilityThe Victor F. Swyden Athletics Training Facility continues UMKC’s commitment to the total care of each student-athlete. Under the guidance of Head Athletics Train-er Ted Ferris, the UMKC Sports Medicine staff prioritizes prevention, treatment and

rehabilitiation in working with Kan-garoo student-athletes.

Built in 1999, the Swyden Athletics Training Facility honors the memory of former Kansas City councilman and longtime UMKC Athletics supporter Victor F. Swyden, who headed the taskforce that guided the Kangaroos from NAIA to NCAA Division I. A lifetime resident of Kansas City and a graduate of Paseo High School, Swyden was honored in 1993 with the Golden Torch Award, one of the highest honors bestowed by UMKC upon an individual.

For the 2009-10 season, the UMKC Athletics Department is teaming up with the UMKC School of Medicine Sports Medicine Fellowship Program, under the direction of Dr. Russell D. White. The Fellowship Program will provide health care for the stu-dent-athletes by staffing the training room 3-4 days per week and will also be avail-able to see student-athletes in need of urgent care. Members of the Sports Medicine Fellowship Program will also be present at all major home sporting events and tour-naments, in addition to providing assistance with any specific athletic events. Dr. George D. Harris, Dr. Meg Gibson, Dr. Billy Irons, Dr. Matt John and Dr. Emily Lott will all be serving the needs of UMKC student-athletes.

Dr. Dan Gurley, meanwhile, is entering is eighth year as the Kangaroos primary or-thopedic surgeon, and Dr. Grant Smith serves as the team dentist for the Kangaroos.

Durwood Soccer Stadium and Recreational Field will serve as the official home of the Kangaroos and will provide student-athletes, students and community groups with one of the top soccer facilities in The Summit League and the Mid-west. The $9 million addition adds to the growing residential feel of the UMKC campus. The gift from the Durwood Foundation and its trustees to construct this stadi-um is another in their long history of supporting a variety of UMKC initiatives.Durwood will provide seating for 850 fans and a separate addition will host locker rooms, offices and concession areas. Stanley H. Durwood was one of the University’s and the athletic program’s most ardent supporters. His affiliation with UMKC began when NCAA Division I partic-ipation was a pipe dream. Durwood also helped establish an endowed scholar-ship for UMKC student-athletes.

The home of UMKC Athletics, Swinney Recreation Center is also one of the finest fitness centers in all of Kansas City. Created through a $14.5 million addition to the old Swinney Gymnasium, the center includes five basketball courts, four racquet ball courts, a 25-meter indoor/outdoor pool and three exercise rooms - two weight rooms and a cardio room.

The competition court serves as the home venue for UMKC volleyball in the fall, UMKC women’s basketball and select men’s basketball contests during the winter. It is also the main practice venue for the men’s and women’s basketball and volleyball teams.

Kangaroo student-athletes enjoy some of the finest locker room facilities in The Summit League courtesy of a major renovation undertaken prior to the 2007-08 school year. Along with providing each student-athlete their own individual locker space, the facility also features a player’s lounge that includes leather couches and a big screen television. In addition, the lounge is equipped with a computer workstation with a high-speed internet connection.

Original Old Swinney Gymnasium, affectionately known as “Old Swinney”, which is part of the Swinney Recreation Center received a face lift in the summer of 2010. The renovation transforms the Old Swinney Gymnasium into a modern, collegiate practice facility that will better serve the student body, faculty and staff members and community members, as well as provide outstanding training opportunities for ‘Roo student-athletes.

The $500,000 renovation plan calls for new basketball/volleyball court flooring and basketball standards and volleyball nets to be installed in the existing facility. The current skylights in the building will also be altered, which will allow for modified lighting to be put into place. The entire Old Swinney interior will be updated and scoreboards will be installed.


The Dutton Brookfield Strength and Conditioning Center at UMKC’s Swinney Recreation Center was officially dedicated on Sept. 22, 2004.

Led by Director of Strength, Conditioning and Sports Enhancement Trumain Carroll, the Brookfield Center is designed to help enhance UMKC student-athletes’ levels of performance while significantly reducing the chances for injuries. The benefit of per-forming structured strength and power training throughout the entire year will give student-athletes the opportunity to reach new levels of physical development.

The center contains free weights, plus platforms, benches and machines and the latest cardiovascular equipment. In the summer of 2006, the area purchased the latest Sports Motion system to give student-athletes the video analysis needed to improve their techniques.

UMKC reached an agreement with the city in the fall of 2011 to play its softball games at the Missouri 3&2 Complex. Since its first season there in the spring of 2012, UMKC has added a new scoreboard and re-furbished the fences around the game field.

In its first season, UMKC softball hosted the Missouri Coaches Versus Cancer Classic, and the Summit League Championships.

Municipal Auditorium, a building that many fans believe is the best arena in which to watch basketball, is the home of UMKC men’s basketball. The venue, which has a rich and storied basketball tradition, is now in its eighth decade in Kansas City.

Municipal, which was opened in 1936, has hosted nearly every type of event - from U.S. presidential campaigns to NCAA Final Four Championships. In fact, the auditorium has hosted a total of nine NCAA Championships, which are the most of any other building in the country. The facility is also the home to the NAIA National Tournament and the MIAA Tournament.

A facility upgrade included $3.5 million in renovations, encompassing new arena lighting, new seating and enhanced locker rooms for players and officials. In 2006, the facility continued its upgrades, as it replaced the playing court.

Municipal Auditorium is located in the heart of downtown Kansas City and steps from the Kansas City Power & Light District.

Municipal Auditorium comfortably seats 10,700 people, including 7,300 permanent upholstered seats.

The Arena is one of four self-contained venues in the Municipal Auditorium, and has its own lighted marquee, box office, show office, coat check, restrooms and concessions. It is accessible from the south side of 13th Street, where visitors enter through the splendid Grand Foyer.

The arena is also connected by covered walkways to the Convention Center, Con-ference Center, and the Auditorium Plaza Garage.

The UMKC men’s and women’s tennis teams practice and compete at the Plaza Tennis Center, which is located just minutes away from the UMKC campus.

The Plaza Tennis Center sits next to the Country Club Plaza, the Midwest’s oldest outdoor shopping area featuring a number of unique shops, restaurants, boutiques and Spanish architecture. The facility includes 14 outdoor lighted courts, a pro shop and locker rooms. The exhibition court, adjacent to the clubhouse, features permanent and bleacher seating for about 300 spectators.

The center has hosted many events, including three Big 12 and the final Big Eight Championships, NCAA Division II Nationals, the Missouri Valley’s National Qualifier Sweet 16, a USTA professional men’s satellite tournament, USA Tournament Tennis sanctioned play, USTA leagues and instructional programs.

The facilty has received local, regional and national awards since its grand opening in 1996. In 1998, the United States Tennis Association named the center a USTA National Outstanding Public Tennis Facility. In 2005, it was named PTR Public Facility of the Year by the United States Professional Tennis Registry.

In 2007, the Plaza Tennis Center was recognized as one of the top 50 Tennis Welcome Centers in the country. UMKC Hosted the Summit League Men’s and Women’s Championships there in 2012.


It is the mission of the Student-Athlete Support Services Office (SASSO) to provide a variety of educational support to ensure student-athletes acquire the tools to meet their academic, professional and personal goals. SASSO provides a comprehensive support unit which includes, but is not limited to the following services: academic counseling, academic mentoring, degree and NCAA eligibility monitoring, assessment, tutoring, computer access, academic and individual skill development, individualized study plans, a comprehensive Summer Bridge Program, academic workshops, knowledge of on-campus resources and Life Skill development.

SASSO offers a comprehensive tutoring program available to all student-athletes. SASSO employs undergraduate and graduate student tutors to provide assistance in a variety of academic areas. The mission of the tutoring program is to provide subject-spe-cific support and assistance to any student-athlete with equal access for all sports. All SASSO tutoring takes place in study hall, SRC 251.

Most tutoring sessions are a one-on-one meeting with a tutor and student-athlete; however, group tutoring sessions are also available. The SASSO tutoring program serves as an additional support for course material but does not supplement for class at-tendance. The primary focus of tutoring is the teaching of skills and strategies that support independent learning. SASSO Tutor-ing services are a privilege and may be revoked if abused.

• The Athletic Department boosted a cumu-lative GPA of 3.26 for 2012-’13.

• 13 of 16 teams finished the 2012-’13 with a cumulative GPA above 3.0. The top three were Women’s Cross Country at 3.65, Women’s Golf at 3.63 and Men’s Golf at 3.56. Seven teams improved their cumula-tive team GPA from 2010-11.

• 139 student-athletes earned Summit League Academic All-League Honors for 2012-’13. 70 student-athletes were named Summit League Distinguished Scholars for 2012-’13. 84 student-athletes were named to the Summit League Commissioner’s List of Academic Excellence.

• 69 student-athletes were awarded the dis-tinction of UMKC Scholar-Athlete for

2011. This distinction is awarded to those with a cumulative GPA of 3.5 and higher at the end of each year.

• Sarah Meiners (Women’s Cross Country) received UMKC’s Vice Chancellor’s Honor Recipient Award.

• During the Division I era 7 student-athletes have been named Academic All-Ameri-cans. Most recently, Kaelene Curry (Soft-ball 2008-2012) earned the distinction in 2011 and 2012.

• 55 current student-athletes received their degrees from UMKC in 2012-’13.

• The Graduation Success Rate (GSR) is 84%, above the 81% Division I average.

• The student-athletes logged hundreds of

hours of community service - participating in service with Harvesters, Morning Glory Café, Center Middle School, and Habitat for Humanity.

• For 2012-2015 UMKC Athletics will re-ceive the NCAA CHOICES Grant, a $25,000 grant to fund campus wide alco-hol education.

The Roo Life Skills Program is designed to support the development of a well-balanced lifestyle for UMKC’s student-athletes, encour-aging holistic well-being, personal and academ-ic growth, mature decision making skills, and a commitment to the campus and surrounding community. The Life Skills program strives to support student-athlete development in five ar-eas: academics, athletics, personal development, career development and community service.

Career Development - Partnerships with UMKC’s Career Services and Career Athletes have been developed to best prepare current student-athletes for life after college.

Community Service Partnerships - Commu-nity service is strongly encouraged, and UMKC Athletics feels strongly in the value of giving back to Kansas City and the UMKC campus. SASSO has formed several partnerships in the community and encourages teams and individ-uals to get involved.

Student-Athlete Advisory Committee - UMKC’s SAAC representatives serve as

leaders within the athletic department, and on campus. The group of 27 representatives meets monthly to encourage team, department and school unity, while promoting excellence and a commitment to community and campus service.

FACTSAfter completing its 51st year of intercollegiate competition, the Western Athletic Conference continues to evolve and feature some of the nation’s best programs. One thing that remains unchanged is the persistent nature of the schools in the WAC to ad-vance their programs to contend at the top levels of the NCAA.

The WAC provides its student-athletes the chance to travel to scenic destinations and gain exposure in some of the nation’s most diverse markets and largest metropolitan cities. In addition, the WAC’s student-athletes work to achieve the highest levels of suc-cess with the academic support of their respective institutions.

The WAC has experienced tremendous success over the years. In men’s basketball, the WAC has sent at least two teams to the NCAA Tournament in 24 of the past 29 seasons. In baseball, the WAC has boasted two national champions since 2003. In women’s basketball, the conference has had at least two teams qualify for the NCAA Tournament 10 times in 22 seasons, with a record five teams in 1998. The WAC also sent teams to three BCS football bowl games since 2006.

In 2013-14, the WAC will create a new digital network to give fans streaming internet access to many of its regular season games and postseason championships including volleyball, soccer, swimming and diving, basketball, softball and baseball.

The WAC is the sixth oldest among the nation’s 11 Division I-A conferences. Its history traces back to July 27, 1962, when the origi-nal six-team league of Arizona, Arizona State, Brigham Young, New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming began competition.

The first championship was held in November 1962, when Arizona won the men’s cross country title and New Mexico followed with the first WAC football title. Arizona finished second in the NCAA College World Series and, less than three years later, Arizona State claimed the league’s first NCAA title when the Sun Devils won the College World Series trophy. Fresno State was the last WAC school to earn an NCAA team title when it won the College World Series in 2008.

Since 1962, several changes have occurred. UTEP and Colorado State became members in September 1967, while Arizona and Arizona State withdrew on June 30, 1978. The WAC then added San Diego State (1978), Hawai‘i (1979) and Air Force (1980). Before 1990, the WAC sponsored championships only in men’s sports. However, a merger with the High Country Athletic Conference formed a single conference under one administrative structure, and the 1990-91 athletic year was the first in which both men and women competed under the WAC name. Fresno State was added in 1992, and then in 1996, the women’s programs from Air Force and Hawai‘i along with six new schools (UNLV, Rice, San Jose State, SMU, TCU and Tulsa) came into the WAC. Air Force, Brigham Young, Colorado State, UNLV, New Mexico, San Diego State, Utah and Wyoming withdrew on June 30, 1999. Nevada (2000), Boise State (2001) and Louisiana Tech (2001) were added while TCU withdrew following the 2000-01 season. In 2005, Idaho, New Mexico State and Utah State joined the WAC after Rice, SMU, UTEP and Tulsa withdrew. Boise State withdrew prior to the 2011-12 season. In 2012, the WAC added Denver, Seattle U, UT Arlington, UTSA and Texas State. The current membership began on July 1, 2013 when the WAC added Bakersfield, Chicago State, Grand Canyon, Kansas City, UTPA and Utah Valley to join Idaho, New Mexico State and Seattle U. The new institutions replace withdrawing members, Denver, Louisiana Tech, San Jose State, Utah State, UT Arling-ton, UTSA and Texas State.

The WAC has had just six commissioners in its history. Paul Brechler was named the first leader of the conference and held the position from 1962-1968. He was followed by Wiles Hallock (1968-71), Stan Bates (1971-80), Dr. Joe Kearney (1980-94), Karl Benson (1994-2012) and current commissioner Jeff Hurd (2012-present).

Presently, the WAC crowns team and individual champions in 19 sports – nine men’s and 10 women’s. For the men, there are championships in baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, swimming and diving, tennis, indoor track and field and outdoor track and field. Championships for women are held in basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, tennis, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field and volleyball.

The WAC office has been located in the Denver area since the conference’s inception with the exception of a two-year stay in Phoe-nix from 1964-66.

July 1, 2005 - Idaho, New Mexico State and Utah State become official members of the WAC.

November 24, 2005 - The WAC streams its first sporting event (the opening match of the volleyball tournament) via the internet using WAC.TV.

September 3, 2008 - The WAC announces a contract extension with ESPN that guarantees more than 300 regular-season and 45 championship events will be aired on the ESPN networks through the spring of 2017.

August 27, 2010 - The WAC and Learfield Sports announce the creation of the WAC Sports Network to enhance the coverage of football and basketball in the WAC’s media markets.

July 1, 2012 – Denver, Seattle, UT Arlington, UTSA and Texas State become official members of the WAC.

October 9, 2012 - The WAC Board of Directors extend invitations for membership to CSU Bakersfield and Utah Valley, effective July 1, 2013.

November 27, 2012 - The WAC Board of Directors extend an invitation for membership to Grand Canyon, effective July 1, 2013.

December 5, 2012 – Chicago State becomes a member of the WAC, effective July 1, 2013.

December 19, 2012 – Texas-Pan American accepts an invitation to become the eighth member of the conference for the 2013-14 season.

January 9, 2013 – The WAC reinstates men’s soccer.

February 7, 2013 – The University of Missouri-Kansas City accepted an invitation for membership to join the conference effective July 1, 2013.

June 11, 2013 – Jeff Hurd is named the sixth commissioner in league history.

June 11, 2013 – WAC Board of Directors determined that the men’s and women’s basketball tournaments will return to Las Vegas and the Orleans Arena March 12-15, 2014. The Board also committed to the development of a strategic plan to facilitate conference growth that includes both a digital network and a new marketing/branding campaign.

July 1, 2013 – CSU Bakersfield, Chicago State, Grand Canyon, UMKC, UT-Pan American and Utah Valley become official members of the WAC.

A decade on the move...

The Evolution of the Kangaroo

When choosing a mascot, the discussion usually starts with three main categories - predatory animals, historical or regional figures, or humans that

represent power and strength - and ends with a collection of the usual suspects. Thanks to Walt Disney, The Kansas City Star and the Kansas City Zoo, UMKC has a very unique mascot, but how exactly does the Kangaroo fit? As it turns out, quite well.

In 1936, the issue of a mascot was first brought up by the editors of The University - the campus newspaper for Kansas City University. Although there were no organized intercollegiate athletics teams at the time, the newspaper staff felt that KCU’s debate team - and more importantly the school itself - deserved a unique identity. During that same year, the Kansas City Zoo purchased a pair of baby Kangaroos, and The Kansas City Star lit the fire with an article titled “Kangaroo May Go To KCU ... Student Editors Believe University Should Have A Symbol.”

Others on campus were not as enthusiastic. The editors of The Crataegus - the University’s yearbook - thought that a Kangaroo was not an appropriate symbol for KCU. A proposed feature page in the 1936-37 yearbook for the Kangaroo emblem was deleted, sparking a tremendous amount of debate.

As the debate wore on, interest from the campus community began to wane. It looked as if KCU would not adopt a mascot after all. But in 1937, two events would combine to indelibly link the Kangaroo with the University and give the mascot a name.

During the student government elections in the spring semester, the CO-OP Party adopted the Kangaroo as its official mascot, naming him Kasey. With a landslide victory in April behind the slogan “Kasey fits KC”, the first part of the foundation was laid. During the same month the first issue of KCU’s humor magazine - The Kangaroo - was published, with a kangaroo gracing the cover. Six months later, a kangaroo made another appearance on the cover of The Kangaroo, and although it wasn’t a solo appearance, it put a quick end to the debate over whether a kangaroo was an appropriate mascot for KCU.

Missouri native and famed cartoonist Walt Disney provided the artwork for the cover illustration, which featured Mickey Mouse shaking hands with Kasey Kangaroo. In a matter of a few years, The Kangaroo thrived while The Crataegus floundered, with the latter eventually folding. The Kangaroo became the University’s yearbook and the Kangaroo became the official mascot of Kansas City University.

Kasey has undergone several changes over the years, with the most recent metamorphosis led by former UMKC Director of Athletics Tim Hall. With the help of local advertising agency Bernstein-Rein, UMKC developed a set of new athletics marks in the spring of 2008. After a community vote, the new Kangaroo logo was unveiled in May. With its aggressive snarl, the new Kangaroo capitalizes on UMKC’s mission to be an outstanding urban university while keeping mindful of the traditions established in 1937.

That’s why all housing is conveniently lo-cated on the west side of campus, near the University Center (and cafeteria), Swinney Recreation Center, and within easy walking distance to all other Volker campus build-ings. Nearby are the Country Club Plaza and museums, and other local attractions. Downtown Kansas City, Mo., is approxi-mately 10 minutes away by automobile (or bus).

THE NEW STUDENT UNION UMKC opened a new 109,000-square-foot Student Union in August 2010. The new Union offers a bird’s eye view of Kansas City’s Country Club Plaza, a new 329-seat theater, a two-story bookstore, new restaurants (Chick-fil-A Express, Baja Fresh Mexican Grill, SubConnection and Jazzman’s Café & Bakery) and 10,000 square-feet of space dedicated to student organizations. Located near UMKC’s residential halls at 51st and Cherry Streets, the $38.3 million Student Union features a green roof terrace and wide floor-to-ceiling windows with views of the Plaza, Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art and UMKC’s Stanley H. Durwood Soccer Stadium and Recreational Field.

The Legends at Village West boasts 1.1 million square feet of retail space and is home to more than 100 shops and restaurants. This northern shopping mecca is also located by the Kansas Speedway, Sporting Park and Community America Ballpark.

The Kansas Speedway hosts major league racing events like NASCAR’s Sprint and Nationwide series. Sporting Park is home to the MLS’s Sporting KC, while Community America Ballpark is home to the Kansas City T-Bones.

Located within a short walk from the Volker Campus, The Nelson-At-kins Museum of Art includes works of art from some of the great masters. The lawn of The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art resembles a badminton court with 18-ft.-tall sculptures, titled “Shuttlecocks.”

Cowtown ShmowtownAlthough Kansas City’s reputation outside the Midwest may be that of an agricultural cowtown, its residents know the truth. UMKC is in the middle of it all, with history, culture and entertainment options on all sides and within just a short walk or drive.

Here’s just a few of the options that students at UMKC have at their disposal.

Kansas City

Municipal Auditorium has hosted more NCAA Tournament games and more Final Fours than

any other venue in the country. The UMKC men’s basketball team will play the majority of its

games at this historical venue during the 2013-’14 season.

The Negro Leagues Baseball Museum chronicles the history and heroes of the Negro Leagues from their founding after the Civil War to their demise in the 1960s. The first professional Negro Leagues were founded in Kansas City in 1920, just two blocks from the museum.

The $850 million Power & Light District is the largest new de-velopment project in the Midwest. Just steps from the Conven-tion Center and a short drive from the Volker Campus, the Power & Light District features eight blocks of dining, nightlife and entertainment venues.

Located next to the Power & Light District, the Sprint Center opened in downtown Kansas City in October 2007. The Sprint Center is a state-of-the-art, 18,500-seat arena offering marquee concerts and sporting events.

Located in the Sprint Center, the College Basketball Experience celebrates college basketball by placing visitors in electrifying, game-like situations. Home to the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame as well, UMKC had the honor of opening the CBE and held its first practice of the 2007-08 season.

Arrowhead Stadium, home of the Kansas City Chiefs, seats more than 79,000 on game day.

The Kansas City Royals play in Kauffman Stadium, which just wrapped up a $250 million renovation.

Kauffman Stadium’s unique features include a 322-foot-wide water spectacular. The water spec-tacular is the largest privately funded fountain in the world. Both teams play at the Truman Sports

Complex.
