Coming off a season in which they set the school record for most wins in a

season (10) and Summit

League wins in a season (6), the UMKC women’s tennis team is ex-

pecting big things from the 2011 squad. Head Coach Kendell Hale, who returns

six-of-seven players from last year’s squad that fin-

ished third in The Summit League standings, will look to lead his team to its first

trip to the NCAA Tournament in 2011.

“We always want to increase our goals from year to year, so this year we want to win the confer-ence, not just make it!,” coach Hale said. “The biggest test for this team will be to take our indi-vidual talent and bring some team success out of it. We have some amazing talent, we just need to stay consistent with it.”

The ‘Roos will face opponents from the Big 12, Missouri Valley and Atlantic-10 Conferences, while also playing seven matches in Kan-sas City throughout the year. “Our schedule is always tough. I like to schedule over our heads to bring out the best in the girls,” said Hale. “I think this will be a challenging slate for our women’s program that should prepare us for our league matches. We’re re-ally looking forward to getting an

opportunity to play seven matches in Kansas City, as it will help us build on our success from a season ago.”

UMKC will get the 2011 season underway in late January in Colum-bia, Mo. The ‘Roos will open the season against Southeast Missouri State on Jan. 22 before playing Big 12 foe Missouri on Jan. 23. Follow-ing road matches with Northern Iowa and Creighton, UMKC will take on UALR in Lawrence and Drake in Des Moines.

Once the calendar turns to March, the ‘Roos will host a pair of match-es in Kansas City on March 4 and March 6. UMKC will begin the stretch against Houston, a team that finished 11-8 a season ago, before hosting Bradley on March 6.Following a date at Kansas on March 9, the ‘Roos will head to the Sin City for their first Summit League

cluster of the sea- son.

UMKC will open play against IU-PUI on March 17 before facing defending regu- lar season and tournament

cham-pion IPFW on

March 18. That same day, the ‘Roos will host Centenary

prior to rounding out the cluster with a match against Southern Utah on March 19.

UMKC will then head east on I-70 on March 27-28 for its final two non-league matches. The squad will face SIU Edwardsville on the 27th before squar- ing off against the Bil- likens of Saint Louis on the 28th. SLU finished the 2010 season with a 14-9 overall record.

The ‘Roos will close out the regu-lar season at home, as the squad will host the second and final Sum-mit League cluster on March 31 through April 2 at the Plaza Ten-nis Center. UMKC will open play against Oral Roberts, the 2010 regular season and tournament runner-up, on the 31st before play-ing Western Illinois, South Dakota State and Oakland to round out the weekend.

Leading the ‘Roos this season will be their lone senior, Chel-sea Horner. The Overland Park, Kan., native returns for her fourth season in the Blue & Gold where she has produced 16 singles wins, the sixth most in school history and 17 doubles wins, one behind teammate Jillian Yakominich for the most in school history. Last sea-son, Horner recorded the fourth

most doubles wins in school history (10) while her six wins from the No. 3 line

was tied for the most in UMKC history.

“We only have one senior in

Chelsea and she will bring leadership and drive to a

young team,” Hale said.

Eva Dalvai and Laura Bouet re-

turn to Kansas City for their sophomore seasons after competing at the No. 1 and No. 2 spots for the ‘Roos in 2010.

Dalvai spent most of the year at the top line for the ‘Roos where her 11 singles wins were the third most in a single season in UMKC history, while her nine wins at No. 1 were tied for the second most in school history. The Strasbourg, Fance native’s, nine doubles wins, meanwhile, rank as the seventh most in a single season at UMKC and helped her to a spot on the all-Sum-mit League Team.

Bouet, meanwhile, had perhaps the best season of any individual in school his-tory after posting a school-re- cord 18 singles wins in a single season

as a freshman, while moving into fourth place on the career wins list. Twice, the Gap, France native was named Summit League Player of the Week and was placed on the all-Summit League team. “Eva and Laura will bring a years experience under their belt,” Hale said. “They had an outstanding season last year and we hope they will hit the ground running this year.”

Wichita, Kan., natives Jessica Ball, Jillian Yakominich and Suzan Lisen-by return to the ‘Roos after placing their names in the record books in 2010.

Ball registered 10 doubles wins as a sophomore, tied for the fourth most in school history, while moving into seventh place all-time with 13 career doubles wins. The junior’s nine wins at No. 3 doubles with partner Yakominich, mean-while, were the most in UMKC history.

Along with her nine doubles wins at the No. 3 line with Ball, Yakomi-nich also posted 12 singles wins last season, the second most in school history. The junior now has 18 career singles wins, the fourth most in UMKC history.

Her 11 doubles wins a season ago were tied for the most in a single season in school history and helped her become the third member of the 2010 squad to earn a place on the all-Summit League Team.

As for Lisenby, the sophomore also posted 11 doubles

wins in her first season as a ‘Roo, tying Ya-kominich and Bouet

for the most in school history, while her 11 singles wins were the third most all-time in school history. Her seven wins from the No. 4 line were also the most in school history and helped her to SummitLeague Player of the Week honors.

“The Wichita girls will all play major roles this season and help in both singles and doubles,” coach Hale said. “Jessica, Jillian and Susan will have a huge impact on our team this year.

Gabriella Pintos is the one new-comer on this year’s squad. The freshman joins the squad out of Coatzacoalcos, Mexico, where she is the No. 358 ranked player in the country.

“Our lone freshman Gabriella, has some incredible potential to be our power player,” coach Hale said. “She is very strong and likes to hit it hard!”

With the bulk of the roster re-turning from last year’s squad and the solid mix of upper and lower classmen, the ‘Roos should be poised to take the next step in its quest for a Summit League Championship.

Kendell Hale is entering his fourth season as the head coach of the UMKC men’s and women’s tennis program. Overall, the 2010-11 season will be Hale’s 17th as a collegiate head coach, where he has compiled a 289-194 overall record.

Hale has orchestrated an amazing turnaround with the men’s and women’s tennis programs since joining the department in 2008. He has guided both the men’s and women’s squads to school-record win totals and has produced one Summit League regular season title, one Summit League Tournament crown and one NCAA Tournament appearance. He was also selected at the 2009 USPTA Missouri Valley College Coach of the Year.

In three seasons at the helm, Hale has coached eight first team all-league selections and a pair of second team all-league honor-ees on the men’s side and six all-league selections (four first/two second) on the women’s side. He’s also coached one Summit League Player of the Year and one Summit League Newcomer of the Year.

During the 2010 season, Hale led the men’s team to a 17-7 overall record, which included a school record 11-match winning streak. The 17 victories were the most in a single season in the record books. The squad finished a perfect 6-0 in league play during the regular season without dropping a single team point, as it claimed The Summit League regular season title. The ‘Roos advanced to the league tournament final for the second straight year before being upset in the final to third-seeded Oral Roberts.

Hale’s student-athletes produced unprecedented success on the court, as senior Patrick Smith was named The Summit League Player of the Year. Smith along with Bret Berryman, Serge Ristivojevic and Gustavo Guerin also received all-Summit League honors. Ristivojevic broke the school record for single season singles victories (18), while Smith and Berryman set the single season doubles mark (18).

In 2009, Hale guided the men’s squad to a 14-7 overall record and a 5-1 mark in Summit League play. After finishing as the regular season runner-up, Hale led UMKC to a Summit League Tournament title and an NCAA Tournament berth with a tight 4-2 victory over top-seeded Oral Roberts. The tournament final win gave the ‘Roos their 14th victory of the season, which tied the then school record for single season victories. A trio of players earned all-league honors, while Bret Berryman was tabbed The Summit League Newcomer of the Year.

Under Hale’s guidance, Patrick Smith closed out the 2009 season with six straight victories to give him a total of 14 singles wins on the year. The 14 victories were tied for the second most wins in the single season record books. Hale also led the ‘Roos to unprecedented success at the Wilson/ITA Central Region Championships, as he coached players to the Round of 16 for the first time in school history.

On the women’s side, Hale has made great strides with the women’s program in three seasons. In 2010, Hale guided the ‘Roos to a school record 10 victories and a 6-2 mark in Sum-mit League play. UMKC finished third in the regular season standings to qualify for the league tournament for the first time since only the top four teams advanced. A trio of student-athletes - Laura Bouet, Eva Dalvai and Jillian Yakominich - each earned all-Summit League honors.

In 2009, UMKC posted five wins and finished with a 4-4 mark in Summit League play. The five victories were the most for the program since the 1999-00 season, while the four league victories were the most in a single season in school history. In Hale’s first season in 2008, he led the ‘Roos to three victories, one of which was a 7-0 triumph over Centenary that snapped the program’s 58-match losing streak.

The Kangaroos also have excelled in the classroom under Hale’s watch. The men’s team earned ITA all-Academic Team honors in 2008 and the women’s squad received the distinction in both 2008 and 2009. Additionally, five student-athletes were selected as ITA Scholar Athletes, 29 were named to The Summit League Winter/Spring Academic all-League team and 13 were Commissioner’s List of Academic Excellence honorees.

Prior to becoming a Kangaroo, Hale spent 13 seasons as the head coach at Rockhurst University, where he guided the Hawks to nine NCAA Tournament appearances in 10 years as an NCAA Division II university. He led Rockhurst to the Midwest Region Championships from 1995-97, and he coached six top-30 Division II student-athletes. His team finished the 1997 season as the 12th ranked team in the nation in the NAIA, which led to him being named the NAIA Midwest Region Coach of the Year.

Hale has been honored at every level since joining the coaching profession. He is the only coach to be named the USPTA College Coach of the Year five times (2002, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2009), and he has been selected as the Wilson/ITA Coach of the Year on three occasions (2001, 2002, 2007). In 2003, Hale was also selected as the NCAA Central Region Coach of the Year.

Hale also was selected as the USPTA Coach of the Year in 2001, the USPTA Missouri Club Professional of the Year in 1998, and he was the USA Tennis Coordinator for Kansas City in 1997.

Not only did Hale have success on the court, but he also was successful in the classroom as well, as his teams at Rockhurst captured eight Team Academic all-America awards.

In addition to his duties with the Hawks, Hale has served as the tennis director at Oakwood Country Club since 2004. From 1997-99, he was the head tennis professional at the Plaza Tennis Center, where the venue was named the Facility of the Year in 1998. Before going to the PTC, Hale served as the head assistant tennis professional/junior coordinator at Kansas City Country Club from 1991-95.

Hale has also been a United States Professional Tennis Association board member for 10 years, and he is the USPTA tester for the Kansas City region.

Hale’s playing career began at Paris Junior College in Paris, Texas, where he was ranked 43rd in the NJCAA national rankings. After a successful two-year stint, Hale played two seasons at Northwest Missouri State, where he helped the Bearcats to a No. 12 ranking in the NCAA Division II poll. He was the only NWMS player to win a MIAA conference title in 1990 and during that same year, he was the conference doubles runner-up.

Hale earned his bachelor of science degree in psychology/sociology from Northwest Missouri State in 1990. He then earned his masters of religious education from the Midwestern Seminary in 1997.

Kendall HaleHead Coach • NW Missouri St., ‘90 • Fourth Season • 32-63, 17-33

Dante Cipulli is entering his third season as an assistant coach with the UMKC tennis program.

Cipulli initially joined the program during the 2007-08 school year, where he coached four ‘Roos to all-league recognition. After stepping away from the program to venture into the business world in 2008-09, Cipulli rejoined the coaching staff in 2009-10, where he coached the men’s (17) and women’s teams (10) to school record victory totals. Cipulli also coached seven all-Summit League student-athletes, which included 2010 Summit League Player of the Year Patrick Smith.

During his first stint with the Kangaroos, Cipulli helped guide the men’s team to a 6-9 overall record and a 4-2 mark in Summit League play and the women’s squad to a 3-12 overall and a 3-5 league record. One of the women’s victories - a 7-0 win over Centenary - snapped the program’s 58-match losing streak.

Prior to coming to UMKC, Cipulli served as a graduate assistant at his alma mater, Southwest Baptist, for two seasons from 2005-07. Before joining the coaching ranks, Cipulli played for the Bearcats for three seasons from 2002-05. During his that time, he was twice named an ITA All-American, won two MIAA Most Valuable Player awards, and was a two-time unanimous all-MIAA First Team selection. Additionally, he finished his career with a school record 110 singles victories.

As a senior, Cipulli won the ITA NCAA Division II Singles National Championship and the Small Colleges Super Bowl Championship. With that win, he advanced to the NCAA Division I National Championships, where he posted a 2-2 record. He also guided SBU to three straight MIAA Championship and NCAA Tournament appearances.

As a result, Cipulli was named the ITA Division II National Player of the Year, the ITA Regional Player of the Year, the ITA Division II Senior Player of the Year, and he was voted an ITA All-Star. In Feb. 2005, the state of Missouri recognized Cipulli for his tennis accomplishments, as he was awarded the Missouri Sports Achievement Award for winning his national championship.

In 2003-04, Cipulli was the national runner-up in singles, and he finished third in the country in doubles. He finished the year ranked No. 2 in the nation in singles and No. 22 in doubles. During his first season as SBU, he was named the North Central Rookie of the Year, as he was ranked 35th in the nation in singles.

Cipulli, a native of Tucuman, Argentina, graduated from Southwest Baptist with an undergraduate degree in business administration/international business in 2005. He then went on to earn his MBA from SBU in the summer of 2007.

ONCE A KANGAROO, ALWAYS A KANGAROO.

UNIVERSITY of MISSOURI-KANSAS CITY

KANGAROO FORMER STUDENT-ATHLETE ASSOCIATION

ESTABLISHED 2008

The Former Student-Athlete Association serves a key role in uniting

the Kangaroos of past and present. All former Kangaroo student-

athletes, coaches, cheerleaders and dance squad members, team

managers and trainers and administrators are eligible to participate

in the Former Student-Athlete Association. Membership within the

Former Student-Athlete Association is free and provides each member

with complimentary tickets, emailed updates and newsletters, gifts,

and, most importantly, the easy ability to reconnect with your former

teammates through different reunion events. It’s the least we can do

for all of those who have worn the Blue and Gold and represented the

Kangaroos! For details on the Former Student-Athlete Association or

to sign up, just call Steve Stroud at 815-235-6018.
