Kids to Parks Day May 18, 2013 - Phipps Park (2175 SW Locks Rd, Stuart)

Hundreds of thousands of children nationwide, including here in Martin Coun-ty, will take part in a grassroots movement to discover America’s parks through play on Saturday, May 18 to commemorate National Park Trust’s (NPT) third annual National Kids to Parks Day.

Martin County encourages residents to visit www.kidstoparks.org and sign up so that local families can be counted in the national tally. Then, on May 18, families are encouraged to visit a park or recreation area and submit photos to [email protected] for possible inclusion in NPT’s national map com-memorating the day.

A special commemorative National Kids to Parks Day is being planned for 10 am - 2 pm at Phipps Park and all are invited to start their day of play there and adventure out to all Martin County’s other outdoor spaces throughout the day. The FREE event at Phipps Park will include inflata-bles, music, games, nature tours, food and fun! Contact 772-221-2328 or Phipps Park at 772-287-6565 for more information.

World’s Largest Swimming Lesson June 18, 2013 - Sailfish Splash Waterpark

On Tuesday, June 18th, tens of thousands of kids and adults at aquatic facilities around the world will unite for the fourth year in a row to set a new Guinness World Record. The global record attempt for The World’s Largest Swimming Lesson™ (WLSL) will take place at 11:00 am.

Team WLSL holds the current Guinness World Record for the largest simultaneous swimming lesson, which stands at 24,873 participants representing 15 different countries across five continents! The 2012 WLSL event generated more than 29 million media impressions, spreading the event’s important message to hundreds of thousands of families.

Tragically, drowning remains the leading cause of unintended, injury related death for children ages 1-5, and the second leading cause of accidental death for children under 14. Research shows participation in formal swimming lessons can reduce the risk of drowning by 88% among children aged 1 to 4, yet many kids do not receive formal swimming or water safety training.

Sailfish Splash Waterpark will be serving as an official Host Location Facility for the WLSL 2013 event. Parents are invited to learn more about this phenomenal event by visiting WLSL.org or sailfishsplash.com.

Phipps Park - Not Just for Out of Town Campers How would you like to spend some time away from it all, yet not have very far to go? Well you can....and as fast as this weekend! Come camping at Phipps Park, a pristine, naturally land-scaped campground operated by the Martin County Board of County Com-missioners in beautiful western Stu-art.

Phipps Park is managed and main-tained by the Martin County Parks and Recreation Department and is located along the Okeechobee Waterway in the Tropical Farms neighborhood of Stuart, at 2175 SW Locks Road. The 55-acre conservation park is conven-iently located near the Florida Turn-pike and Interstate 95. The park's close proximity to the St. Lucie Locks provides fisherman with an opportuni-ty to enjoy fresh and saltwater fishing.

Phipps Park offers campers a variety of sites for RV's with necessary "hook-ups” as well as primitive sites for tents. Park amenities include a fire pit/grill at each campsite, a playground for kids, restrooms with showers including hot water, laundry facilities, three pavilions with grills, a boat ramp and a dog walk area. Veteran campers appreciate waterfront views that many sites provide. Visitors have spotted rare wildlife including burrowing owls, coyotes, otters and bobcats among other interesting native flora and fauna.

The Martin County Parks and Recreation De-partment encourages residents and travelers alike to visit, relax and recreate at Phipps Park. For more information about our campground, call 772.287.6565.

Join the Xtreme Teen Program! Martin County Parks and Recreation, through grant funding by the Children’s Services Council of Martin County, has created a teen only group now known as the TAB or Teen Advisory Board. Twice a month TAB meets as an advisory board and help to organize and execute the events that have been planned. Each event is free to any middle or high school student who wants to attend.

All events are put on in the hopes of giving teenagers something fun, free and safe to participate in. TAB mem-bers receive community service hours for attending each meeting as well as each event. As a member of TAB you also get first choice at our extra trips (i.e. Blizzard Beach, Halloween Horror Nights, etc.). As a result of being in this group, not only do the kids walk away with active community service hours but also the sense of what it is to sit on a board and be a part of a planning organization. TAB also looks great on college resumes and is a lot of fun as well.

2012-2013 has been a successful year for the program. TAB and the Xtreme Teen Program has hosted 22 events reaching more than 800 teenagers. Events in-clude dodgeball and basketball tournaments, game nights, scavenger hunts, movie nights, parking lot par-ties, skate competitions and so much more. These events are completely free to all middle and high school students.

GET WITH THE PROGRAM!

YOUR FRIENDS WOULD DO IT.

To end this school year we are throwing our 8th Annual Summer Slam Jam on May 24th at 76 Golf World. If you are in middle or high school you get free admis-sion and unlimited EVERYTHING all night. The first 100 teens in will receive a free food voucher and we will be registering people all night to win a spot on our final trip this year to Typhoon Lagoon!

The Rio-Jensen Skate Park will miss you Pat!

Skate cards to access Martin County Skate Parks are available to residents for $10 per year, or $20 per year for non-residents. For more information call 221-1418. Skate cards can be purchased at the Parks & Recreation Department main office or the Vince Bocchino Community Center.

A NOTE OF CONDOLENCE: The Martin County Parks and Recrea-tion Department and the patrons of the Rio-Jensen Skate Park recently lost a beautiful loving and caring per-son, Pat Mark. Pat managed the park since the first day the gates opened. Anyone who has ever been to the park had the sincere pleasure of meeting this amazing woman. She touched so many children in a positive way as a role model and mentor. Not only was she responsible for the safety and well-being of every skater, she was also in many cases a second parent to many of them. She will truly be missed by all.

We are actively seeking volunteers to assist us in a variety of ways with special events and activities such as the Senior Games, Special Olympics, kid’s triath-lon, fall festivals, park and beach clean-ups and much more.

We welcome adults, seniors, non-profit organizations and agencies and students who are looking for service project hours for high school or college credits to join our team.

As featured in Southern Living Weddings Magazine, the Mansion at Tuckahoe lends itself to intimate parties and ex-pansive celebrations, and has deservedly become the prem-

ier wedding venue on Florida's Treasure Coast. The elegant Medi-terranean design and art deco interior feature ter-razzo floors, eight fire-places, marble restrooms, a discreet prep kitchen, and a private bridal suite with adjacent groom’s room. The north terrace overlooking the Indian River embraces intimate

weddings, formal dinners, and dancing under the stars, while the south waterfront amphitheater and terrace can accom-modate expansive ceremonies and live musicales.

Indian RiverSide Park (IRSP) is the premier family destination park in Martin County. Located in beautiful Jensen Beach, IRSP sits beach side on the Indian River Lagoon, with a ¾ mile paved walking path, 780' fishing pier with boat slips, ample parking, in-teractive play fountain, beach and wedding ceremony locations plus reception/banquet space. There are four rental pavilions also available in the park. These spacious pavilions are equipped with picnic tables, grills and power with a nearby interactive children’s fountain and are perfect for birthday parties, family picnics or reunions.

The Frances Langford Dockside Pavilion is an air con-ditioned banquet hall, overlooking the Indian River Lagoon. Ideal for weddings, birthday parties and anni-versaries, with more than 3,800-sqft. of space not including the caterers kitchen & wraparound balcony. The facility can hold 256 people for your next event.
