Welcome to the 2014 Executive Conference for Small and Mid-Size YMCAs!

We are so very pleased you are joining us for this unique conference, focused on Building Capacity and Unlocking Potential of our 750 small and mid-size YMCAs. This year’s theme reflects our shared promise to increase the Y’s impact and create positive social change in the communities we serve and strengthen.

At this conference, you will have opportunities to collaborate with peers, learn from expert presenters and deepen your knowledge of the key initiatives Ys are advancing. Our hope is that you leave the conference feeling more capable in your role as a champion for your Y, more connected to the Y cause and more committed to unlocking the potential of your Y.

ULICE PAYNE, JR.Immediate Past ChairYMCA of the USA Board of Directors

Ulice Payne, Jr. has served on the YMCA of the USA Board of Directors since 2005 and currently is Immediate Past Chair. He also serves on the YMCA of Metropolitan Milwaukee Board of Directors.

Professionally, he is President of Addison-Clifton, LLC, a global trade compliance firm. He previously was the Managing Partner of the headquarters office of the Foley & Lardner LLP law firm, where he also represented global and domestic companies in cross-border transactions as Chair of the International Business Team. He is a member and past Chair of the U.S. Department of Commerce Wisconsin District Export Council and is Co-Chair of the China Business Council of the Metropolitan Milwaukee Association of Commerce.

Ulice received his bachelor’s degree in business administration from Marquette University and earned his Juris Doctor from Marquette University Law School.

LAURA HERMANManaging DirectorFoundation Strategy Group

Laura Herman is a Managing Director at Foundation Strategy Group (FSG) with nearly 20 years of strategy consulting experience. She leads the Global Health practice, and her clients include nonprofit organizations, private foundations and corporations. She has led work for the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, LEGO Foundation, Pfizer, Abbott, Nike, Atlantic Philanthropies, Women’s World Banking, Surdna Foundation, Skoll Foundation and many others.

She is a frequent presenter on the Collective Impact model, speaking to groups from New York to Cartagena to Los Angeles. She is currently authoring FSG’s next article on Collective Impact, examining its relevance to global initiatives. Laura started her career at Deloitte Consulting, focusing on large-scale organizational change initiatives.

She holds a master’s degree with a certificate in public management from Stanford’s Graduate School of Business, a master’s degree in international policy from Stanford University and a bachelor’s degree in international business from the University of Michigan.

NEIL NICOLLPresident and CEOYMCA of the USA

Neil Nicoll was hired as President and CEO of YMCA of the USA (Y-USA) in May 2006 and is the 13th person to lead the Y Movement in the United States. He joined Y-USA following 14 years as President and CEO of the YMCA of Greater Seattle. He previously was the President and CEO of the YMCA of Greater Worcester (Mass.) for 12 years.

Neil began his 45-year Y career as a Program Director at the Howard County branch of the YMCA of Greater Baltimore. He also served as Executive Director of the Dorchester branch of the YMCA of Greater Boston for three years and the Prince George’s County branch of the YMCA of Metropolitan Washington, D.C., for six years. The NonProfit Times has named Neil to its “Power and Influence Top 50” every year since 2010.

He earned a bachelor’s degree in history from Eastern Nazarene College and a master’s degree in education from Springfield College.

Neil will present a summary of the recently approved 2014-2017 strategic plan for Y-USA. Our executive conference is the first gathering of YMCA professionals to hear about this multi-level, comprehensive approach to delivering our cause. The plan is the result of input from volunteer and staff leaders from across the Movement. The National Board, on the recommendation of its Strategic Planning Committee, has just given its approval and you will be the first to hear all about it.

Get an update on the Child Safety Program that launches Movement-wide in the third quarter of 2014. Y-USA and Praesidium staff, along with representatives from at least one pilot Y, will share their experiences and insights. Specifically, the presenters will speak about the training of local staff leaders, conducting association-wide self-assessments and beginning remediation work based on their self-assessment.

STRATEGIES FOR IMPLEMENTING THE AFFORDABLE CARE ACT (Sand Key)

The Affordable Care Act is here and proactive Y leaders must plan now for implementation. The ACA creates both challenges and opportunities for Ys and their employees. This workshop will focus on leadership strategies, key resources and practical considerations for implementing healthcare reform.

Kathy Kuras, Director, Career Development, Training and Leadership Development, Y-USA

Storytelling is one of the most powerful methods for communicating the Y’s cause and advancing critical efforts in fundraising, engagement and building a cause-driven culture. Learn how to heighten storytelling in your Y to inspire people to give of their time, talent and treasure. Kathy will share practical tips from both inside and outside the Y and preview a project with Northwestern University about engaging front-line staff and volunteer leaders in storytelling.

CREATING A CULTURE OF ENGAGEMENT (Bay Room)

April Benetollo, Senior Vice President of Market Strategy, Daxko

Daxko has spent the last few years analyzing Y engagement issues and developing solutions to help Ys solve engagement problems. April will explain the trends and leave you with 10 practical things you can do immediately to begin meaningful community engagement to reduce attrition, improve the quality of retention and raise more money.

INSPIRING COMMUNITIES THROUGH CHANGE (Cardita Room)

Freddie Brown, Technical Advisor, Healthier Communities Initiatives, Y-USA

Discover how Ys and their community partners have sought to improve the nation’s health and well-being through Healthier Communities Initiatives, and explore the connections between efforts to promote wellness for all, help individuals manage health risks and enable victims of chronic diseases to reclaim their health and well-being.

APRIL BENETOLLO, DAXKO

April is Senior Vice President of Market Strategy for Daxko. She leads marketing and sales teams and is responsible for the development and communication of company strategy. April joined Daxko in 2000 and has provided leadership in sales, marketing and account management. She previously served a Canadian commercial property development firm in Florida and operated her own consulting business, advising French companies on distribution to U.S. markets. She earned a bachelor’s degree in international relations from the University of Alabama.

FREDDIE BROWN, Y-USAFreddie L. Brown, Jr., is Project Manager for the Healthier Communities Initiatives at Y-USA, a signature initiative that focuses on combating obesity and reducing chronic disease rates. He provides coaching and technical assistance to community teams participating in the Racial and Ethnic Approaches to Community Health Initiative (REACH). He earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Berea College, Kentucky.

ANNE CALVO, Y-USAAnne is Senior Director for Child Safety at Y-USA, providing critical leadership to advance the Y’s top priority of child safety. Anne is a Registered Nurse and has been an officer in the British Royal Air Force, a director of nursing in a private hospital and a head nurse on a medical ship serving children in third-world countries. Most recently, she worked for the Salvation Army, helping to create and lead a comprehensive child and elder abuse prevention program.

JOHN DUNTLEY, Y-USAJohn is Senior Camping Specialist at Y-USA. He has over 30 years of YMCA camping career experience, executive leadership and development consulting with Ys across the nation. He advances best practices for day and resident camping, outdoor education, conference and retreat camp programs. John also fosters relevant partnerships with national organizations that will keep YMCA camping on the forefront of youth development, healthy living and social responsibility.

STRENGTHENING INCLUSION: MEETING COMMUNITY NEEDS (The Mainstay Tavern)

Chad Nico Hiu, National Specialist for Diversity and Inclusion, Y-USA

Come find out what Ys can do to meet the most pressing needs of our communities. During an interactive and inspiring conversation, we will discuss how to operationalize diversity and inclusion, align with current strategic plans and focus on six key areas of opportunity to strengthen communities through inclusion.

MEASURING IMPACT WITH SEER BASEMETRICS (Sand Key Room)

Lynne Vaughan, Senior Vice President and Chief Innovation Officer, Strategic Innovation, Y-USA

Learn why impact is an important part of a larger system of YMCA performance measurement and how well-being is a holistic way to frame the impact we aim to have on individual youth and adults. We will highlight how measuring impact is coming alive in Ys through both data and storytelling and what local Ys are doing to use their data effectively.

ROBYN FURNESS-FALLIN, Y-USARobyn is Senior Vice President and Chief Development Officer for Y-USA, leading the organization’s national fundraising, strategic alliances and collaborative model development. She previously served as chair for the Large YMCA Chief Development Officers Network and is a past chair of the North American YMCA Development Organization (NAYDO). Robyn also held leadership roles at YMCA of Silicon Valley (Calif.), YMCA of Metropolitan Atlanta, YMCA of Santa Clara Valley (Calif.) and YMCA of Central Maryland. She holds a bachelor’s degree from McDaniel College, Maryland.

TONY FRAGALE, Y-USATony is Vice President for Certification and Membership Standards and Small and Mid-Size YMCAs at Y-USA. He previously served as President and CEO of the YMCA of Metropolitan Lansing (Mich.), CEO of the YMCA of Greenwich (Conn.), and held multiple positions at the Philadelphia Freedom Valley YMCA. He earned a bachelor’s degree in health and physical education from West Chester University of Pennsylvania, and a master’s degree in public administration from Western Michigan University.

PAM GARZA, Y-USAPam is STEM Project Director at Y-USA. Most recently, she served as a consultant for both the Noyce Foundation and the National Coalition for Science Afterschool. Prior to that, Pam held positions with national youth-serving organizations including Professional Development for the National 4-H Council, National Youth Development Learning Network for the National Collaboration for Youth/National Human Services Assembly and Girls Incorporated.

JONATHAN GILES, Y-USAJonathan is Senior Brand Relations Manager at Y-USA, assisting YMCAs as they transition to meet the Y’s new brand standards. He previously served the Metro Atlanta YMCA and Volusia Flagler Family YMCA associations, supporting their marketing, public relations and brand needs. Most recently, he was the marketing director for LEGOLAND Discovery Center in Atlanta.

JASON HAGENSICK, Y-USAJason is Senior Director for CEO Search at Y-USA. He supports local YMCA volunteers in recruiting cause-driven individuals to lead YMCA associations. Previously, he served as CEO for the YMCA of Greater Long Beach (Calif.) and COO and Executive Director of the association’s Weingart-Lakewood Family YMCA. He also served at the South Coast YMCA branch of the YMCA of Orange County (Calif.), the YMCA of Corpus Christi (Texas) and the YMCA of San Antonio (Texas). He is a graduate of Texas A & M University.

BOB C. HASTEDT, YMCA RETIREMENT FUNDBob is Director of Education of the Y Retirement Fund and is responsible for providing educational opportunities and guidance to participants on their investments in the fund. He is a Certified Financial Planner and a Certified Retirement Counselor. He has served in various capacities for the fund since 1981. Bob earned a bachelor’s degree in economics and mathematics from Wagner College, New York, and a master’s degree in finance from St. John’s University, New York.

CHAD HIU, Y-USAChad is National Diversity & Inclusion Specialist at Y-USA, providing resources, training, capacity building and support related to diversity, inclusion and global engagement to ensure all segments of society feel welcome at the Y. Previously, Chad served as Director of Operations & Youth Exchanges for the International Branch of the YMCA of Greater New York. He earned a bachelor’s degree in human services administration and youth development and is currently pursuing a master’s degree in organizational management and leadership, all from Springfield College.

EMILY HOLTHAUS, Y-USAEmily is National Director of Social Responsibility for Y-USA and will lead the implementation of the Signature Program for Social Responsibility. She joined Y-USA’s Training & Leadership Development team in 2008 as the Senior Manager of Career Development and previously served in leadership roles at YMCA of Greater Pittsburgh and YMCA of Greater Saint Paul (Minn.). She earned a dual teaching degree from Iowa State University and a master’s degree in leadership management from Concordia University, Minnesota.

SUE MACKEY, Y-USASue is Senior Director, Talent Management, Training & Leadership Development at Y-USA. She leads the team responsible for developing career development resources and experiences including the Leadership Competency Model and Leadership Certification, the Bridge Program, recruitment resources and support for Campus YMCAs and college and university partnerships. Sue previously served as Executive Director at the Flushing YMCA Beacon Center in the YMCA of Greater New York Association.

SHEILA TIEMENS, Y-USASheila is a Senior Resource Specialist at Y-USA and supports local YMCAs in building their capacity in human resources and developing and delivering resources, information and best practices in HR. She previously served as the Senior Vice President of Human Resources for the YMCA of Greater Seattle. She earned a bachelor’s degree from Washington State University and a master’s degree in human services from Springfield College.

LYNNE VAUGHAN, Y-USALynne is Senior Vice President and Chief Innovation Officer at Y-USA. She began her 35-year YMCA career as a lifeguard and swim instructor at the Battle Creek Family YMCA in Michigan. She also served Ys in Harrisburg, Penn., and Milwaukee, Wis. KELLIE WARDMAN, Y-USAKellie is a Resource Director with Y-USA, serving the YMCAs in New Hampshire, Maine and Vermont. She previously served as Chief Operating Officer for the YMCA of Greater Manchester (N.H.). Before the Y, she worked in the field of systems thinking and organizational learning. She received a bachelor’s degree from the University of New Hampshire and a master’s degree from Emerson College, Massachusetts.

KENT JOHNSON, Y-USAKent is Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer at Y-USA, leading assessment, strategy development and implementation of services to local associations. Previously, Kent held a variety of leadership roles at the YMCA of Metropolitan Milwaukee, including president and CEO. He also served at the YMCA of Metropolitan Chicago and the Sheboygan County YMCA (Wis.). Kent holds a bachelor’s degree from Eastern Illinois University and is a participant in the nonprofit executive education programs at both Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management and Harvard Business School.

KATHY KURAS, Y-USAKathy is Senior Director of Organizational Change Management at Y-USA, providing organizational-wide leadership to the engagement strategy aimed at fostering a national Movement of people who live our cause by intentionally thinking, acting and communicating in ways that strengthen community. Previously, she served as Director of Career Development at Y-USA and as Vice President of Member Experience at the YMCA of Greater Charlotte (N.C.). She has a bachelor’s degree in music from Loyola University in New Orleans and a master’s degree in organizational management and leadership from Springfield College.

JONATHAN LEVER, Y-USA Jonathan is Vice President for Health Strategy and Innovation, leading Y-USA’s healthy living work. Previously, he was the founding CEO of the Nonprofit Center of Northeast Florida, Inc. He also practiced nonprofit law in Boston, was a program officer at the Jessie Ball duPont Fund and a research associate at Harvard University’s Hauser Center for Nonprofit Organizations. He has a bachelor’s degree in religion from the College of William and Mary, a master’s degree in education from Harvard University and a law degree from Northeastern University.

ANGELA F. WILLIAMS, Y-USAAngela is Executive Vice President, General Counsel and Chief Administration Officer at Y-USA. Previously, she was the Interfaith Liaison for the Bush-Clinton Katrina Fund, served as Vice President and Deputy General Counsel of Litigation and Government Relations for Sears Holdings Corporation, and was Sears’ Chief Compliance and Ethics Officer. She also served as Special Counsel on Criminal Law to Sen. Edward M. Kennedy. She holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Virginia, a law degree from the University of Texas School of Law and a Master of Divinity from the Samuel DeWitt Proctor School of Theology, Virginia Union University.

GIGI WOODRUFF, Y-USAGigi is Senior Leadership Development Manager for Training & Leadership Development at Y-USA, focusing on executive and volunteer development initiatives. She previously served as a Leadership Consultant for the YMCA University, Executive Director in Dallas and Conroe, Texas, and Vice President for Program Development and Training at the YMCA of Greater Houston. Gigi is a graduate of Austin College, Texas.
