Orchids & Onions is an educational and fundraising program of the San Diego Architectural Foundation, a 501(c)3, nonprofit organization dedicated to education and the promotion of outstanding architecture, planning and urban design throughout the San Diego region.

Orchids & Onions is the only interactive, community-based program geared towards raising awareness and encouraging practical discourse in response to San Diego’s built environment. The success of the program relies heavily upon the citizens of San Diego; public nominations and feedback about the nominations published on the O&O website are integral to planning, growth and future development of our city.

Each year, a jury of design professionals and artists is selected to determine the official Orchids & Onions based upon public submissions in categories including: architecture, interior design, landscape architecture, historic preservation and miscellaneous. The ‘Miscellaneous’ Category encompasses anything and everything that the existing categories do not; and any nomination submitted to the Miscellaneous Category that is determined to be an Orchid or Onion will be recognized in a category specific to that project.

The online People’s Choice Vote gauges San Diegans’ opinions about the state of their region. The culmination is an enlightening and fun-filled awards presentation, promoting awareness and practical discourse about the state of our region.

The final awards are presented at a special ceremony and silent auction attended by upwards of 500 guests, including notables in the design and architecture communities. Previous venues include the San Diego Museum of art, the Balboa Theater, and the Museum of Contemporary Art in La Jolla.

Promotion of Orchids & Onions occurs throughout the year, connecting the event to thousands of design-minded people in the San Diego architectural network and beyond. An online vote for the People’s Choice Award is one of the most anticipated components that is revealed at the ceremony. Bolstered by an impressive pre-party and an exciting and thrilling Silent Auction, the Orchids & Onions ceremony is the must have ticket in the SD architectural and design community.

A San Diego institution for over 35 years, Orchids & Onions attracts a broad audience ranging from industry professionals and design aficionados, to retailers and restauranteurs. Our sponsors enjoy tremendous exposure throughout the design community and San Diego at large. Orchids & Onions provides partners with the opportunity for extraordinary involvement and visibility on the evening of the Orchids & Onions event as well as the months leading up to the event. Only one Grand Orchid and one People’s Choice Sponsor is offered. The Grand Orchid is the most prestigious award given during the O&O ceremony, recognizing the most outstanding example of architectural design in the SD community. The People’s Choice award is given to the most popular architectural design from the culmination of a public voting process.
