Rail market demonstrates its resilience
The global rail market has been remarkably resilient
to the economic downturn and financial crisis of the
last few years, and while there have been cutbacks in
spending on rail in some countries, such as Spain and
Portugal, this has been compensated by strong growth
elsewhere, most notably the Middle East where rail
construction is booming.
The annual worldwide market for railway
technology products and services is worth around
€143bn. According to SCI Verkehr, Germany, the overall
market will continue to grow at an annual rate of 3.3%
to reach around €168bn by 2016.
The North American market, which was worth an
estimated €21.7bn in 2013 with passenger spending
slightly ahead of freight, is expected to grow at around
5%. Central and South America, which is dominated
by Brazil, will see very high growth rates in the urban
transport segment and significant growth in the freight
transport business. The €4.6bn market is forecast to
grow at 4% per year to reach €5.6bn by 2017.
Europe is by far the world’s largest market for
railway equipment and services. It was worth around
€49bn in 2012 and is expected to grow at about
3% a year.
Interest in Africa’s rich mineral resources has turned it
into one of the most dynamic markets. The €3.6bn market
will grow by 8.7% a year on average to €5.4bn in 2017.
While the Chinese economy is now less dynamic,
according to the World Bank it is still expected to grow
by 7.7% in 2014 compared with 7.5% in 2013, while
growth in East Asia is forecast at 7.2% in 2014, slightly
ahead of the 7.1% growth rate in 2013. Overall the
€43.4bn Asian rail market is expected to grow at around
1.8% annually.

Unrivalled coverage of InnoTrans
International Railway Journal offers unrivalled
coverage of the world’s largest railway exhibition,
InnoTrans, in four dedicated print issues, online and
through social media. In 2014 our editorial team will
again have all corners of Messe Berlin covered, offering
unrivalled online editorial coverage of the new event.
IRJ’s experienced and knowledgeable editorial
team, supported by colleagues from sister
publication, Railway Age, and many of our esteemed
correspondents, will cover events, unveilings and press
conferences across the exhibition. We will post the
latest news online throughout the show to give those
who are unable to attend an opportunity to keep up
with what is going on, and point those who are in Berlin
towards the highlights and talking points of the show.
IRJ will also dedicate three print issues to the major
themes of InnoTrans in the run up to the event, and
compile a comprehensive review of the show in the
November issue. July will look at Train Components
and Interiors, Passenger Information and Fare
Collection; August will focus on Track Technology and
Maintenance, and Signalling and Telecoms; September
will include features on Innovative Trains as well as our
comprehensive Show Preview. Each of these issues will
be distributed to delegates from our stand in Berlin and
provide advertisers with a chance to inform prospective
attendees of their presence and their products well in
advance of the event.
