A NOTICEABLE DIFFERENCEWhen we originally set out to do good, we wanted to make sure our efforts made a lasting, positive impact on

individuals and communities. Through collaboration, partnerships and the development of our own innovative

solutions, we’re making the world a better place. We’re making a real change.

Page 3: 2014 CONIT IPACT RPORT - Dow Chemical Companymedia-library.dow.com/WebContent/€¦ · 1.5 tons (3,000 pounds) of food for local community food pantries to help feed 300,000 food

REAL SOLUTIONSNearly 1 billion people in the world don’t know when, how or

if their next meal will come. We’re doing our part to help end

global food insecurity. We started a program through which

employees from Dow AgroSciences share their time and

expertise to help solve world hunger.

REAL LEARNINGWe’re helping shape the minds of the scientists, technicians,

engineers and mathematicians of tomorrow. And, in 2014,

we showed students why they should shoot for the moon.

REAL SUCCESSWe have the will and ability to make a difference. And we start

with the places around the world we call home.

SENDING AG EXPERTS TO GET AT THE ROOT OF WORLD HUNGERIn Africa, more than 200 million men, women and children don’t know where their next meal will come from or when. So Dow AgroSciences has teamed up with the Academic Model Providing Access to Healthcare (AMPATH) — a consortium of North American academic health centers led by the Indiana University School of Medicine — to help fight hunger.

Ending food insecurity takes more than putting food on a plate. To make our efforts sustainable, we’re sharing our agricultural knowledge with local African farmers to help improve their crop yield. Experts from Dow AgroSciences go to Kenya for six-month assignments to work with AMPATH to improve the local quality of life.

LaRon Beemer, a finance manager with Dow AgroSciences, was the first employee to work on assignment in Kenya. He was responsible for engaging with AMPATH, the local agricultural community, area farmers and potential food chain partners. After first learning about their current agricultural practices, he helped generate ideas to improve their systems.

He also shared information about vital components of modern agriculture and commercial development practices.

“Education is the single most important asset that can be developed to advance food security,” said Kay Kuenker, vice president of government affairs, public affairs and sustainability at Dow AgroSciences. “LaRon is a great example of how our employees bring a variety of skill sets and knowledge that can make a real difference.”

Beemer’s career took a corporate path, but the role of agriculture in health and food security has been on his mind for decades. “We all see stories and pictures about hunger in the news,” Beemer said. “Yet, as I started looking beyond the headlines, I found real people with real issues and needs.”

From mid-May until mid-November, Beemer worked in Kenya to identify areasof need. He connected with AMPATH and Dow AgroSciences experts around the world to brainstorm and develop sustainable solutions.

“I get more excited every time I visit with the people from AMPATH as they are a great organization to collaborate with and learn from in this space,” Beemer said.

AMPATH’s expertise primarily is in providing holistic health care services in Kenya. The organization also has a strong commitment to initiating sustainable, locally led programs. So AMPATH now engages Kenyan farmers to produce food for its patients and local communities.

“[Ensuring] food security is a critical part of managing the health of a resource-limited population,” said Robert Einterz, M.D., executive director of the AMPATH Consortium. “We are thrilled that Dow AgroSciences is joining forces with Indiana University, Purdue University and our Kenyan and North American partners to help us address this important issue.”

In early November, Sarah Russell French,Australia-New Zealand Product Stewardship Specialist, joined Beemer in Kenya, allowing Beemer to complete his six-month assignment while ensuring his progress would transition smoothly from one person to another. Other Dow AgroSciences employees will travel to Kenya for brief periods, as specific expertiseis needed.

ADDRESSING FOOD INSECURITY AT HOMEBy partnering with local schools, businesses and organizations,

Dow AgroSciences employees grew, harvested and donated

1.5 tons (3,000 pounds) of food for local community food

pantries to help feed 300,000 food insecure neighbors in

Marion County, Indiana.

DISCUSSING HUNGER SOLUTIONSRoger Thurow, journalist and author of The Last Hunger

Season: A Year in an African Farm Community on the Brink of

Change, led a discussion about food insecurity at the 2014

Annual Employee Awareness event. This Hunger Solutions

Network-sponsored event also inspired attendees to consider

how they could use science to serve the needs of the

growing world.

INFLUENCING PUBLIC POLICY THROUGH EDUCATIONWe collaborated with The Earth Institute, Columbia University,

in New York City to educate leaders in sub-Saharan Africa

about agricultural biotechnology. Through field clinics,

sabbatical programs and special seminars, we’re hoping to

influence agricultural policy and practice to boost food

production and fight global food insecurity.

FAQS ON GMOAs public debate grows on genetically modified foods, our goal

is to make information not only easier to find but also easier to

understand. The Council for Biotechnology Information invites

the world — including critics of genetically modified organisms

(GMOs) — to visit GMOanswers.com, a resource to better

communicate research and data that support GMO products.1

AN OUT-OF-THIS-WORLD EXPERIENCEThese last few years have sparked imaginations about the worlds beyond our atmosphere. NASA is exploring our neighboring planet up close, the European Space Agency landed a probe on an asteroid traveling 85,000 mph, and private companies are in an arms race to commercialize space flight. With all of this excitement in space, we did our part to inspire future astronauts.

We helped make it possible for more than 60 students from Beech Grove and Arsenal Technical high schools to take a trip to theIndiana State Museum to experience the NASA International Space Station exhibit. During their visit, they met face-to-face with NASA scientists and engineers to hear about the research conducted and discoveries found 240 miles above sea level.

This was done as part of our global science, technology, engineering and mathematics(STEM) education initiative.2 We want to show youth all the career possibilities within a STEM-related industry. This collaboration with NASA, the museum and the high schools was our latest effort to inspire students to reach for the stars.

GLOBAL HEADQUARTERS HOSTS SCHOLARSHIP COMPETITIONTwenty-three fifth- to eighth-grade students

displayed their science knowledge to compete for

a chance at scholarships worth $15,000. Science

Ambassadors hosted the state-level You Be the

Chemist Challenge at our global headquarters.

The challenge enlivens the learning experience and

encourages students to explore science and

chemistry beyond the classroom.

STUDENTS GRASP AG SCIENCETHROUGH HANDS-ON WORKDow AgroSciences’ Hispanic Latin Network, African

American Network and Science Ambassadors employee

network hosted several student groups from the Young

Innovators Quest, Hoosier Health Academy and Purdue

University’s Hoosier Agribusiness and Science Academy.

These programs gave students the opportunity to work

alongside our scientists and tour our facilities.

INSPIRING FUTURE AG SCIENTISTS IS A GROWING AMBITIONThe need for a reliable food supply increases as the population

continues to rise. And we made this problem a priority by joining

the national STEM Food & Ag Council. Alongside a long list of food

and agriculture companies, educational institutions, government

agencies and the youth development community, we’re inspiring,

nurturing and engaging the next generation of leaders to pursue a

career in food and agriculture.

STUDENTS GET EDUCATION THROUGH EXPERIENCEDow AgroSciences in Puerto Rico and the biotechnology

program of the Pontifical Catholic University of Puerto

Rico in Ponce sponsored 12 students in a week-long

biotech educational program. During this week, students

conducted DNA extractions and plant tissue cultures,

listened to lectures about our work and toured the

Dow AgroSciences facilities in Santa Isabel.

DISCOVERING THE NATURE OF AGRICULTURAL SCIENCEAt the University of Queensland Gatton, high school

student Mitchell Crisp studied crop damage from insects

and chemical resistance. He researched alongside

Dr. Robert Annetts of Dow AgroSciences through the Primary

Industry Center for Science Education/Dow AgroSciences

Traveling Scholarship Award for Excellence in Sciences

program. “I learned so much … from the basics of agronomy

and entomology to how new chemistry is developed and

why it’s important for the industry,” Crisp said.

A BETTER WORLD STARTS WITH BETTER COMMUNITIESIt wasn’t long ago that Brazil was at a point of dramatic economic growth. But recent news hasn’t been quite as positive, especially at the individual level. Sixty-three percent of Brazilian consumers are in debt, and about half of all families are outspending what they earn. And money woes are one of the top reasons why families fall apart.

These findings strike close to home. Dow AgroSciences has a location in Franco da Rocha, Brazil, so this unfortunate circumstance affects our corporate family.

To help all families within and beyond our organization, we partnered with Dr. Emílio Hernandez Aguilar of Escola Técnica Estadual (Etec) in Franco da Rocha and Universidade da Inteligência (a Civil Society Organization of Public Interest, or OSCIP, in Bolso Forte) to educate families about finances and help change their spending habits. It’s a project we call Projetando seu Futuro (Designing Your Future).

Since July 2014, we’ve given lectures to all Etec students and families, offered behavioral finance classes for students and provided individual financial coaching to Dow AgroSciences employees in Franco da Rocha. And, in October, Etec students who enrolled in our behavioral finance classes began coaching other families within the community, creating a ripple effect throughout the area.

So far, we’ve trained 40 students to coach families. Those students have helped 400 families in Franco da Rocha. And our Bolso Forte team has coached 18 Dow AgroSciences employees. In a matter of months, our efforts already were making a positive impact.

While we were helping families directly with their finances, we found other ways to help the community. At the end of 2014, we held roundtables to discuss developing a recycling campaign in Franco da Rocha. And, for 2015, we’re developing a neighborhood-wide garbage collection plan and presenting the results.

MORE THAN ONE WAY TO HELPFrom building homes for Habitat for Humanity and donating

clothes and toys to children in earthquake-rattled Haiti to

raising funds for the Muscular Dystrophy Association and

playing in a charity softball tournament, Dow AgroSciences

employees in Puerto Rico are doing everything they can to

improve life locally and globally.

TAKING STEPS TO IMPROVE LIVESDow Greater China employees Chunlin Wang, Robin Hu,

Athena Xing, Du Hui, Li Hui and Feng Yanhua of the Shanghai

Dow Center raised funds for the Shanghai United Foundation’s

Egg Walk. All six employees walked 50 kilometers to support

the foundation’s One Egg Program — an effort to provide one

egg per day to children who might not otherwise receive

enough protein.
