2014 SEASON PREVIEWUnderheadcoachAliKazemaini,ClevelandStatefinishedthe
2013seasonwithan8-12recordanda3-4markintheHorizonLeague.Thefirsthalfof theseasonsawsomeroughspots,buttheVikingsfinishedtheseasonwitha5-3recordafterOctober12.
While last season’s teamwas loadedwithsenior leadershipalloverthefield,thisyear’steamwillbeyounger,withjustfiveseniors.Additionally,fourofthenineupperclassmenonthisteamaretransfers.Theteamwillwelcomeinfivetotal transfersandninefreshmenastheylooktochallengefortheHorizonLeaguecrown.Hereisapositionalgroupbreakdownofthe2014Vikings.
FORWARD
Betweengraduationand transfers, theVikings lost14goalsand10assistsfromforwards.Fortunately,theteamhasrecruitedwellandhassomegood,youngtalentreadytotakecontrolinthefront-thirdofthefield.
Seniors Alex Obbey and Mike Matlock will look to havebreakout seasons in their final collegiate campaigns afterstrugglingtofindconsistancyintheirfirstthreeseasons.JuniorCristianArboledalookstofindmoreplayingtimefortheVikingsafter appearing in 10 matches last season. Sophomore DanKoniarczykhadagoodshowinghisfreshmanyearin14gamesandwilllooktobuildonthatinanexpandedrolethisupcomingseason.
The addition of transfer Thomas Beck could pay hugedividendsrightawayfortheVikings.Beckisaprovencollegeiatescorer,whoscored31goalsinthreeseasonattheUniversityofMountUnion.FellowtransferWallisDebourouislookingfortheopportunity toprovehe canmake an impact on the collegiatelevelaftertransferringfromSaintFrancis(Pa.).
ThemostintriguingtransfermaybejuniorAlvaroPichardo,whocomestoCSUafterspendingtwoseasonsattheUniversityof Mobile. Pichardo was a dynamo his freshman year in theYellowhammer State, scoring 12 goals in the team’s run to anNAIAnationalchampionshipin2012.
MIDFIELDUndoubtedly themidfield unit for this 2014Vikings squad
willbenefitfromloadsofdepth.Thecoachingstaffsignedfourfreshmenmidfielders,andreturnssomeprovenveterans.
The real excitement this season is about sophomore SergioManesio,whoplayedandstarted in19of the team’s20gameslast season,was second on the team in goals last seasonwithfive,andfinishedtheseasonwith12points.ThecoachingstaffwilllooktoManesiotocontinuetoprovidescoringchancesforhimselfaswellastheotherplayersaroundhim.
Three-yearstarterMikeDerezicwillprovideleadershipandexperience in themiddle half of the field for theVikings. TheformerHorizonLeagueAll-NewcomerTeammemberwillalsolooktosetthetonewithhisphysicality.
Fellow senior Jacob Naumann will look to hold down amidfieldspotinhisfinalseason,whilejuniorsCheoArmstrongandVictorZamorawill looktoexpandtheirrolesandprovidemorestabilityaftercomingoffthebenchformostoflastseason.
DEFENSEAfter learning behind an experienced group last season,
sophomoreJamesMilliwilllooktoprovehecanbeamainstayin the CSU defense. Talented freshmenMichael Dichlian, JakeLagania,andKevinBlackwoodwilllooktocompeteforastartingspotintheirfirstyearoncampus.TransferNickKanewilladdsomedepthinthebackthirdofthefield.
GOALKEEPERTheVikingshadthreekeeperswhostartedatleastfivegames
lastseason,oneofwhomwassophomoreNickCiraldowhowilllikelygetthefirstchancetocapturethestartingkeeperspotafterstarting10gamesasafreshman.
ZachPetrenkoreturnstothesquadafterayearawayfromtheteam.Hesawlimitedplayingtimeasfreshmanin2012.MountOlive transferAleksandarDrobacwill look to compete for thespotaswell.

Csu’s Home soCCeR FIeld FoR moRe tHan two deCades
Krenzler Field, the home of Vikingsoccer for more than two decades,reopened in 2005 after undergoing a$2.9 million renovation that trans-formeditfromasoccerfieldtoayear-roundmulti-usesportscomplex.The renovations consisted of two
majorimprovements,eachofwhichhasdramatically improved the athleticphysical plant for all CSU sports. Thenatural grass playing surface wasremoved in favor of a state-of-the-artFieldTurfartificialfield.The second change became visible
last December when a removable air-supported dome was placed over thefield,creatinganindoorpracticefacilityforallsportsforthewintermonths.TheadditionofFieldTurfwasmade
necessary when women’s soccer wasadded atCSU, increasing theusage ofthefieldtothepointwhereitwouldbeimpossibletomaintainthenaturalgrasssurface.FieldTurf,arevolutionaryplayingsur-
facethatcombinesthepropertiesofnatu-ral grasswith thedurability of artificialturf, has been installed on almost 1,000playing surfaces in 20 countries aroundtheworld. It iscurrently inuse inoverhalfoftheNationalFootballLeaguesta-diumsandbyalmost50NCAADivisionI institutions. It has been approved forplaybyFIFA,theworldgoverningbodyfor soccer,with some of the top profes-sionalteamsaroundtheworldcurrentlypracticingandplayingonit.The removable dome, a product of
YeadonDomes, covers the entire lengthand width of Krenzler Field, approxi-mately94,000squarefeet,witha60-footceiling.It ismadeofaheavydutyvinylcoatedflameresistantpolyesterarchitec-turalfabric.TheKrenzlerDomeisawelcomeaddi-
tion, especially since the IntramuralSportsCenter,theonlyotherindoorprac-tice facilityoncampus,wasdemolishedinthewinterof2005tomakewayfortherecently opened Student RecreationCenter.Thedomebenefitsmore than just soc-
cer.
The softball teamholdpreseasonprac-tices in the facility each winter with thespacebeinglargeenoughtosetuparegu-lationsoftballfield.Thesizeofthefieldalsomakesitpossi-
ble to set up an indoordriving range forthe golf teams along with batting cagesandpitchersmoundsforsoftball.The renovation of Krenzler is the first
step in the construction of CSU’s VarsityVillage, a concentrationofuniversityath-letic facilities interwoven with new resi-dential livingspacesbetweenE.19thandE.24thstreetsalong thenorthernedgeofcampus.Futureplanscallfortheadditionofanon-campusbaseballfield,thereloca-tionofVikingField,thehomeofCSUsoft-ball, and the reconfiguringof theMalagaTennisCenter.Builtatanoriginalcostof$1.9million,
KrenzlerFieldbecamethe firstuniversityoutdoorathleticvenuewhen itwasdedi-catedonOctober17,1985.Designedandbuilt specifically forvar-
sitysoccer,thefieldisnestledatthenorth-westcornerofthecampusagainstaback-ground of downtown skyscrapers. Thecomplex includes permanent seating for1,680 and an electric scoreboard and clock, plusa fieldbuildinghousing two36-per-son team locker rooms, a referee lockerroom, a training room, a storage room and
public restroom facilities. The lightingsystemprovides50footcandlesofillumi-nation.ThefacilityisnamedinhonorofJudge
AlvinI.Krenzler,along-timesupporterofthe university. Krenzler served on theCSU Board of Trustees from July 1967untilAugust1970,leavingtheboardwhenhe became judge of the Eighth DistrictCourtofAppeals.He retiredas judgeoftheUnitedStatesDistrictCourt,NorthernDistrictofOhioin1992.ItwasKrenzler’sgenerouscontribution
-whichatthetimewasthelargestsinglegift ever made to CSU athletics - thatmadecompletionofthefacilitypossible.Judge Krenzler, along with numerous
soccer alumni,were in attendancewhenthefieldwasrededicatedbeforethedou-bleheaderonOctober2,2005.Onthatday,the Viking women hosted Green Baywhile the CSU men followed againstButler.
WhenAliKazemainitookovertheClevelandStatesoccerprogramin2006,heinhertiedateamwithlowexpectationsfollowingawinless2005season.
Inashortperiod,Kazemainihasbeenabletoturntheprogramaround,winningat leasteightgamesfivetimessincetakingoveratCSU.Kazemaini’sbestseasonwiththeVikingscamein 2012 when the team won 11 games and was able to bring home the Horizon LeagueTournamenttitle,helpingClevelandStatequalifyfortheNCAAtournamentforthefirsttimesince1980.
Inhis22yearsasaheadcoachAliKazemainihascompiledarecordof238-151-31,including62victoriesatClevelandStateintotal,anda33-15-6recordatKrenzlerFieldoverthepastsixseasons.
Lastseason,theVikingsfinishedwithanoverallrecordof8-12,whilefinishingfifthintheconferencewitha3-4mark.Inwhatcouldbedescribedasanoverallup-and-downseason,thepeakoftheseasoncameinOctoberwhentheVikingsrattledoffathreegamewinningstreakagainstGreenBay,BowlingGreen,andDetroit.
The2012seasonsawtheVikingsfinish11-6-3(4-1-2),placingsecondintheHorizonLeagueregularseasonstandingsbeforetakinghometheleague’stournamenttitlewitha2-0winoverLoyola.Theteamoutscoreditsopponent29-18ontheseason,includingfourgamesofatleastthreegoals.
Taking over thewinless CSU program beginningwith the 2006 season, Kazemaini returned immediate results. CoachKazemainiledtheVikingstothelargestturnaroundamongallNCAADivisionIprograms,endingtheseasonwitha6-10-2record.Duringthe2007season,theVikingsfinishedwitharecordof3-7-2inmatchesdecidedbyonegoalorless,indicatingtheywerebetterthantheir3-12-3overallrecord.
In2008,theVikingsturnedthecorner,finishingwithaleaguemarkof8-3-1andflexedtheirmuscleathome,going7-3-1atKrenzlerField.ThestrongseasonfinishedwithanappearanceintheHorizonLeagueChampionshipmatch,thefirstsince2002.
KazemainicamebacktoClevelandStateafter14successfulseasonsasheadcoachatJohnCarrollUniversity.
KazemainitookoveratJCUin1992andtheBlueStreaksimmediatelybenefited,going 15-2-1 andwinning theOhioAthleticConferenceChampionship inhis firstseason.Theaccomplishmentsquicklypiledup.HewonsevenOACregularseasontitlesduringhis14years,earningaleaguetournamentberth12timesandclaimingfourtournamentchampionships.
He guided his teams to the NCAA Tournament in 2000, 2001, 2003 and 2005,highlightedbyatriptotheroundof16in2003.
Forhisefforts,KazemainiwasnamedOACCoachoftheYearthreetimes(2000,2001,& 2005) and theNSCAA/AdidasRegionalCoach of theYear twice (2000&2001).
DuringhistenureatJohnCarroll,Kazemainicoachedplayerswhowonall-leaguehonors 42 times, all-region accolades 21timesand31All-Ohiochoices.
In the classroom, eight of his playerswerenamedto theCoSIDAAcademicAll-District team,with two earningAcademicAll-Americahonors.
A native of Tehran, Iran, Kazemainioriginally came toClevelandState in1980andplayedonteamsthatcompileda42-21-12 record,makingoneNCAA tournamentappearance.
Kazemaini,oneoftwoplayersinVikinghistory to lead the team in scoring fourstraightyears,currentlyranksfifthinCSUhistory in goals (41), sixth in total points(102)andninthinassists(20).
KazemainibeganhisCSUplayingcareerinfinefashion,leadingtheteamingoals(6),assists(4)andpoints(16)in1980.
He came back the following year todouble his scoring totals, tallying team
highsinallthreecategorieswith12goals,eightassistsand32pointstoearnsecondteamAll-AmericaandfirstteamAll-Ohioaccolades,helpingCSUtoa14-5-2record.

Kirk Harwat, a Cleveland native, is beginning his third season as an assistant coach atClevelandStateduringthe2013season.
HarwatwasabighelptotheClevelandStateprogramin2012,astheVikingswent11-6-3ontheyear,whilealsotakinghometheHorizonLeaguetournamenttitle.Withtheleaguecrown,theVikingsqualifiedfortheNCAATournamentforthefirsttimesince1980.
PriortoarrivingatCSU,HarwatspenttwoyearsasanassistantcoachatRichmond.Beforeworking for the Spidershe servedas the assistant coach for theU-16 andU-18 teamsat theInternationalsDevelopmentalAcademy.ThereheguidedtheU-16teamtoadivisiontitleandsubsequentberthintheNationalChampionship.
HewasanassistantcoachatLouisvillein2008beforeworkingatBradFriedel’sPremierSoccerAcademyin2009.HealsoservedasanassistantcoachatSt.IgnatiusHighSchool,helpingtheWildcatstoa23-1markandstaterunner-upfinish.
A2005graduateofAkronwithadegreeinbusinessmarketing,Harwatwasatwo-yearstandoutfortheZipsaftertransferringfromAshland.
In2002,HarwatwasnamedtheMACNewcomeroftheYear,aswellasfirstteamAll-MACandall-regionafterleadingtheteamwithninegoalsand22points.Ayear later,Harwatearnedfirst teamall-leagueandall-regionhonorsafter tallying23pointsonninegoalsandfiveassists,helpingtheZipstothethirdroundoftheNCAAChampionship.
HarwatbeganhiscollegiatecareeratAshland,finishingfourthinthenationwith19goalsasafreshmantoearnGreatLakesIntercollegiateAthleticConferenceNewcomeroftheYearhonorsaswellasfirstteamall-leagueandall-regionaccolades.Hewasarepeatselectiontotheall-leagueandall-regionteamsasasophomore.
Followinghiscollegiatecareer,Harwatwasselectedasoneof50playersinvitedtotheMLSplayercombineandplayedforthe2003ChicagoFirePDLsquadthatreachedtheleaguefinal.HealsospentthreeyearsplayingprofessionallyforBorussiaMonchengladbachinGermany.
