Csu’s Home soCCer field for more tHan two deCades
Krenzler Field, the home of Vikingsoccer for more than two decades, reopened in 2005 after undergoing a$2.9millionrenovationthattransformedit from a soccer field to a year-roundmulti-usesportscomplex.The renovations consisted of two
majorimprovements, eachofwhichhasdramatically improved the athletic physical plant for all CSU sports. Thenatural grass playing surface wasremoved in favor of a state-of-the-artFieldTurfartificialfield.The second change became visible
last December when a removable air-supported dome was placed over the field, creatinganindoorpracticefacilityforallsportsforthewintermonths.TheadditionofFieldTurfwasmade
necessary when women’s soccer was added atCSU, increasing theusage ofthefieldtothepointwhereitwouldbeimpossibletomaintainthenaturalgrasssurface.FieldTurf,arevolutionaryplayingsur-
facethatcombinesthepropertiesofnatu-ral grasswith thedurability of artificialturf, has been installed on almost 1,000playing surfaces in 20 countries aroundthe world. It is currently in use in over halfoftheNationalFootballLeaguesta-diums and by almost 50 NCAA Division I institutions. It has been approved forplaybyFIFA,theworldgoverningbodyfor soccer, with some of the top profes-sional teams around the world currently practicingandplayingonit. The removable dome, a product of
YeadonDomes, covers the entire lengthand width of Krenzler Field, approxi-mately94,000squarefeet,witha60-footceiling.It ismadeofaheavydutyvinylcoatedflameresistantpolyesterarchitec-turalfabric.
The Krenzler Dome is a welcome addi-tion, especially since the Intramural Sports Center, the only other indoor prac-tice facilityoncampus,wasdemolishedinthewinterof2005tomakewayfortherecently opened Student RecreationCenter.Thedomebenefitsmore than just soc-
