LETTER FROM OUR LEADERSHIP

1

Dear friend,

Thank you for your interest in Literacy Services of Wisconsin. The following pages of this 2014 annual report will give you a peek inside a year of change and celebration. In January, Ginger Duiven joined the organization as the 6th Executive Director. The Board of Directors and the staff team began preparations to kick off our 50th Anniversary year. This was a year of taking stock of where we have been and where we need to go next. Much has changed in 50 years but the need for Literacy Services remains as strong as ever. Today, adults in our communities are still in search personalized education to help them build the skills that will help them pull themselves and their families out of poverty and live a better life. As in the 49 years before, hundreds came seeking the help they needed to learn to read, improve their reading skills, or to learn to communicate in English. Whether they had just arrived here as a refugee, had trouble learning in a large classroom setting in school, or experienced a trauma during their school years that got in the way of their educational success, the 292 Literacy Services trained volunteer tutors were there ready to be their partners on the path to their goals. This year also marked the first overhaul of the GED tests in a dozen years. The four new tests were launched at the beginning of 2014, bringing with them a computer-based testing environment for the first time. The new tests, aligned with college and career readiness standards, also represent an increase in difficulty. We upgraded our GED classroom with new computers and textbooks. The volunteer tutors jumped in to learn the new material and master the computing tools assembled to support student success. 2014 was an important year. I hope you find this report informative and inspiring.

Best Regards, David Hanson2014 Board Chair

ONE-ON-ONE PERSONALIZED LEARNING MODELOur students benefit from individualized instruction from a single volunteer tutor in every study session to ensure the highest success.

ADULT BASIC EDUCATION / READING (ABE)offers a measurable, research-based curriculum designed to teach students language and word structure. This reading system is multi-sensory and phonics-based, two essential components for highachievement.

GENERAL EDUCATIONAL DEVELOPMENT (GED)offers personalized instruction for students seeking a GED credential. GED students prepare for testing in four required subject areas to earn a GED certificate – language arts, mathematical reasoning, science, and social studies.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNING (ELL)provides one-on-one instruction for students from other world language backgrounds. The emphasis is on reading, vocabulary development and “survival English” designed to assist the individual needs of each student.

WORKFORCE READINESS INITIATIVEEach program incorporates career preparation workshops and computer training sessions that broaden our students’ education with technology and communication-based life skills.

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS

2014 was a year of change and rebuilding. The new GED tests introduced at the start of the year brought with them a period of retooling our curriculum and choosing new learning materials to align with the new more rigorous tests. The computer-based testing environment required a new computer-based learning environment to prepare students to succeed.

We focused this year on quality, retention and outcomes. In 2014, 292 tutors worked side by side with 358 students and they spent 23,600 hours working together to achieve students’ goals. This volunteer service is equal to $524,864 in donated services!

Numbers can’t tell the whole story, and these kinds of accomplish-ments aren’t measured in months but often in years to the goal line. In the pages that follow you will meet three students and a tutor who exemplify the kinds of accomplishments that happen thanks to the magic of our one-on-one volunteer tutor model.

In 1964, Dr. Frank Laubach, the global leader in adult literacy education, came to Wisconsin to speak. He addressed a group of 400 people and told the story of his teaching method “each one, teach one” and how it had changed the lives of thousands of people around the world. Dr. Laubach challenged the audience to bring this method to Wisconsin. Inspired, Gordon Ralph volunteered to do just that. A year later, Gordon had organized enough community support to create Literacy Services of Wisconsin.

In celebration of this pivotal time, we kicked off our fiftieth year a with a luncheon and awards presentation. The event, hosted by Event Committe Chair Sandy Wysocki and Master of Ceremonies Pat Haggerty, brought together students, donors, volunteers, and staff members who have given a part of themselves to the legacy of our organization. The winning smiles of awardees and their emotional stories, coupled with the tremendous support from individuals and sponsors, ushered in our anniversary year with a heightened sense of passion and gratitude. The inspiration continues as we introduce the awardees on the following pages.

ADULT BASIC EDUCATION / READING

2014 STUDENTOF INSPIRATION

Artie WilliamsAs a young man, Artie Williams got in some trouble and was not able to finish high school. His formal education stopped at 11th grade. Artie starting putting his life back together as a resident of HOPE Street Ministry 15 years ago. Around that time, Artie found out about Literacy Services from a friend and student at LSW. He started his studies with LSW back at the Wells Street location, but quit when he ran into some tough spots. Artie began his studies for the second time at Literacy Services in early 2013 in the Adult Basic Education program. This time around, Artie is “in it to win it!”

Today he is focused on learning for learning’s sake because, he says, “Knowledge is power.” As a student in ABE, Artie spent 18 months working diligently to improve his reading and writing skills, sharing his bright smile and delightful personality with the Literacy Services community. Artie completed ABE in June of 2014 and brought all of his charisma and determination to the GED program, where he continues his work in preparing for testing. Literacy Services Board President David Hanson was honored to introduce Artie at this year’s luncheon, and to bestow upon him the award of 2014 ABE Student of Inspiration.

Fatljume AbduliFatljume, known to us as Lume, arrived in the US in 2012 from the small village of Zeye-us, Macedonia after marrying her husband Ill-lear, an Albanian-American. Her teachers back home taught her some English grammar, but they spoke in their native Albanian most of the time. But, the skills she had learned did not translate very well when she arrived in Wisconsin. Lume said, “I didn’t understand the cashier at the store. Everyone talked very fast and I couldn’t catch what they were trying to say.” She could communicate but she still was hindered at getting a job. And knowing one day she would have children, she wanted to be able to talk to them and help them in English. “I asked my husband, ‘How am I going to teach our kids if I don’t know how to read or write? How am I going to educate them?’” she recalled. In 2013 she discovered Literacy Services and her life transformed. Her tutors helped her improve her English, but also helped her to find a purpose for her life and to build her confidence. Lume worked hard and soon she landed her “first real job in America!” In August she enrolled in the Optician-Vision Care program at MATC. She has a dream of becoming an optician. All the hard work paid off when she received the 2014 spring technical diploma Outstanding Student Graduate award and the 2014 Lamp of Knowledge award from MATC. Now she wants to help others change their lives, too, by tutoring beginners to the English language.

Neri enrolled at Literacy Services in 2012. After strengthening her reading skills in the Adult Basic Education (ABE) program, Neri transferred to the agency’s GED program. Neri was motivated to go after a GED when she noticed that her four children were watching and imitating what they saw her doing. She realized that if she was studying and working hard in school maybe they would imitate that too! Neri tried other GED programs that offered classes but the classroom setting didn’t work for her. She heard about one-on-one tutoring at Literacy Services and the rest is history.

For more than a year, Neri studied with her tutor, Sara Risley, and finally earned her GED. She has since enrolled at MATC to study to become a nurse. But Neri’s story doesn’t end there. Neri’s achieve-ments have been an inspiration for her family to pursue excellence in their own lives. Her children began studying with her at night. They began taking school more seriously. Their grades improved. As Neri was striving in those final months to finish her GED, all four children were on the honor roll at their schools. And, the ripples continue. Neri’s mother and sister witnessed her success. Today they are each enrolled as students at Literacy Services and are motivated to reach their own educational goals.

2014 TUTOROF INSPIRATION

When Sara retired in 2011 she immediately challenged herself to use her newfound free time to make a difference through volunteering. Fortunately for Literacy Services, she decided to inquire about volunteering at LSW first. She has been here ever since, stating, “I can’t imagine volunteering anywhere else. This is, simply, the best job I have ever had.” Sara has brought an exceptionally high level of commitment to her work at Literacy Services. Her tutoring schedule has her here at least three hours a day, three days a week. She is passionate about tutoring because of the broad impact. As Sara says, “In lifting that one student up, we start a process that makes all of us better citizens of the world and the world a better place in which we all can live.” Beyond her commitment to GED students like Neri, Sara contributes her breadth of skills and knowledge to our agency in other amazing ways. As an accomplished artist, Sara shares her talents by photo-graphing our people and events for marketing purposes, helps run our social media platforms, and adorns many of our walls with her lively abstract paintings and photographs. In addition, she has been innovating supplemental study material for GED and supports the staff with editing and proofing needs. Her capacity to give to our mission is awe-inspiring.

VOLUNTEER SUPPORTVolunteers are embedded in our very DNA. Literacy Services was founded by volunteers and continues to be driven by volunteer service. The 292 volunteer tutors who dedicated their time each week to partner with adult students in 2014 were the people who made the greatest impact. Literacy Services would not exist without volunteers. Think about that just a minute…Literacy Services would not exist without volunteers. Thank you to each of you who have contributed your time and teaching skills in 2014! In 2014 we engaged more volunteers to help with other important work too. Another 200 volunteers helped collect books, organize our fundraising book sale and 50th Anniversary Kickoff luncheon, do important research and writing projects, and so much more. Our capacity to serve our mission grows when volunteers engage to help with the work of keeping a nonprofit running strong. Thank you to all of you who brought us your skills, smiles, and time.

COMMUNITY PARTNERS“Many hands make light work” the old saying goes. Literacy Services partnered with many organizations over the year to make light the work of collecting used books, organizing a big book sale, kicking off our 50th Year, and most importantly, attacking the most persistent problems in our community. We are grateful for the partnerships with United Way of Greater Milwaukee and Waukesha County, MATC, Wisconsin Literacy, the Workforce Funding Alliance, and many of our community’s leading companies.

Johnson Controls, JPMorgan Chase, Caterpillar, BMO Harris, We Energies, AT&T and others supported book drives and the volunteer efforts of their employees, provided inkind support and matching gifts, and so much more. The civic organizations of our community, including our founding church congregations, and other faith communities added their many hands to make light work of avariety of projects throughout the year.
