Letter from the President
Home is my favorite place. It’s where I spend the most time with the ones I love. It’s wearing comfortable clothes, eating great food, playing games, laughing, teaching and learning (sometimes the hard way).
In this year’s annual report, our donors and grantees share what
home means to them. The people featured in these pages live in busy homes filled with the noises of raising children, in assisted living communities and on family farms, in lake cottages and the homeless shelter. Regardless of where they live, many of their definitions of “home” carry common themes: love, security and belonging.
Our home is Kosciusko County, and we desire to make this community a place where all residents can feel a sense of belonging, be secure, and experience life to its fullest. Our grantmaking reflects this desire. For some families in our community, help with food and housing stability is necessary. For others, the chance to experience art, theater and music is what makes life richer. For some people, having a place to enjoy the outdoors is important. For many young people, the opportunity to have an excellent education and learn skills they can use locally means they can continue to make Kosciusko County home – perhaps raising their own families here someday.
We are honored to be home to over 300 funds entrusted to us by local donors who share a desire to continuously improve the quality of life for people in Kosciusko County and beyond. If you have a charitable dream, we would love for it to live here.
Sincerely,
Jerry Yeager Board President

Eva KorNever Take Home for GrantedOn March 25, 2014, a capacity crowd of 3,000 middle school students filled the Manahan Orthopedic Capital Center at Grace College to hear Eva Kor’s first person account of surviving the Auschwitz Death Camp and the medical experiments of Nazi Dr. Josef Mingele on Eva and her identical twin sister, Miriam.
Later that night, another capacity crowd of community members came to hear Eva speak. Eva detailed how her family was forced from their home when she was 10-years-old. Later, Eva and Miriam would be ripped from their mother’s arms as they arrived at Auschwitz. Eva and Miriam never saw their mother, father or sisters again.
The heart of Eva’s message to the audience was to forgive. Eva said she was able to forgive the Nazis, even Dr. Mengele who performed many terrible experiments on her.
“Don’t pass on that family legacy (abuse and unforgiveness) to your children and grandchildren. Heal yourself…It is not that complicated…What do you have to lose? Your pain,” Eva said.
The Eva Kor event was made possible, in large part, by grants from our Community Funds and from a donor advised fund.
Middle school students listen in rapt attention as Eva
Kor tells her story of surviving Auschwitz and of her
decision to forgive those who murdered her family and
hurt her.

Elementary teacher whose dream it was to bring Eva
Kor to Warsaw to speak to students.

One summer night in 1975, 21-year-old Lorraine Albert attended the Leesburg Days ice cream social with her parents. Her family sat at the same table as John Anglin, Jr. Lorraine had seen John before. Her dad delivered grain to the Clunette Elevator, which was owned and operated by the Anglin Family. But that night, John and Lorraine talked and got to know each other a bit. John asked Lorraine if he could take her to a chicken barbeque the next night. She said yes. By August of that summer, Lorraine and John were engaged. They were married that November.
During their 37 years of marriage, John and Lorraine raised two children: a son, Jeremiah, and a daughter, Jessica. John eventually became co-owner of Clunette Elevator. While their children were young, Lorraine stayed at home - busy raising children and 4-H animals. Later, she joined John at the elevator where she still serves as Office Manager.
In 1992, tragedy struck the Anglin family when 15-year-old Jeremiah and his friend Mike Bishop both died in an automobile accident. The community
outpouring, especially from the farming community, was strong. The 4-H Junior Leaders established a memorial garden at the fairgrounds in honor of the boys.
In 2009, John Anglin, Sr. (John Jr.’s father and Jeremiah’s grandfather) used the grant dollars from a Heart of Gold award in his honor to establish the Jeremiah J. Anglin Memorial Fund, which was designed to support causes that Jeremiah cared about.
In 2012, tragedy struck the Anglin family again when Lorraine’s beloved husband, John, passed away very unexpectedly while the couple was vacationing.
Now, two years later, Lorraine; her daughter, Jessica; and son-in-law Gabe, continue the Anglin tradition

of service to the agricultural community through the Clunette Elevator (Gabe and Jessica co-own the elevator with Tom Anglin). They buy and sell corn and soybeans from farmers from Kosciusko and surrounding counties. They also provide crop protection products and crop nutrients. More than just a business, the Clunette Elevator is an integral part of the community. The elevator supports young people and agricultural education through 4-H and FFA.
They were among the first elevators to accept gifts of grain on behalf of the Kosciusko County Community Foundation for the Ag Cares Fund. Area farmers can donate corn or beans to the Kosciusko County Community Foundation by delivering crops on behalf of the
Community Foundation to a participating elevator. The elevator sells the grain for the Foundation and sends the proceeds of that sale to benefit the Ag Cares Fund. The Community Foundation sends the farmer a gift receipt for tax purposes. Each gift of grain helps the Foundation support causes that matter to the Ag community – food programs, Ag education and youth.
“Home means more now (since John passed away),” said Lorraine. “Home is where memories are made…it’s where you sit down for dinner with your family…
it’s where you enjoy traditions like Sunday night popcorn. Home is a place that is safe
and secure.”
Our thanks to the Anglin Family and to Clunette Elevator for making our community, our “home,” a more generous, more
thriving, more youth and farm-friendly place
to live.
Lorraine Anglin stands in front of the Clunette Elevator, which has been in the Anglin Family providing Ag services to our community
since 1951. The Elevator was among the first to accept gifts of grain on behalf of the Community Foundation’s Ag Cares Fund.

Dr. and Mrs. William Male Making a Home for Grace College’s Center for Seminary and Graduate StudiesDr. William (Bill) Male began working when he was very young, first in his family’s bakery and then in his father’s frozen pastry business. In high school, the young entrepreneur even established a small printing business, which he sold after graduation. Bill’s earliest jobs included building boats, newspaper publication, and plastics molding.
In 1948, Bill, who was 21-years-old, helped his grandfather pick up a calf from a farmer. While there, Bill saw a beautiful girl, Ella, the farmer’s daughter. She was feeding the barn cats when Bill first noticed her. He saw Ella again when she was singing in the church choir. Soon after, they began spending time together.
On Labor Day evening of 1948, Bill drove Ella from Mendon, Michigan to Fort Wayne, Indiana to begin her
business college studies. After dropping Ella off at school, Bill had a remarkable drive back home. Remarkable, because he had an overwhelming sense that despite his strong work ethic and entrepreneurial spirit, he was not living a purposeful life. During that drive home, he felt a certainty that God wanted to use his life to help others. So dramatic was this sense that Bill applied the very next morning to Western Michigan College in Kalamazoo. He wasn’t sure what God was

calling him to do, but he felt certain he would need a college degree to do it.
Turns out, Bill didn’t earn one but four college degrees. The first degree was a Bachelor of Arts from Western Michigan. The second was a degree from Grace Theological Seminary. The third was a Master’s degree in Psychology from Temple University. Finally, Bill earned a PhD from Indiana University.
Bill and Ella got married just before Bill’s third year at Western Michigan. Shortly after graduation from Grace, Bill and Ella and their first-born daughter moved to Philadelphia to pastor the First Brethren Church. While in Philadelphia, Bill and Ella welcomed two more daughters.
In 1959, after four years pastoring in Philadelphia, the Males moved to Winona Lake where he joined the
faculty of Grace Theological Seminary. In 1961, their youngest daughter was born completing Bill and Ella’s “all-girl Male quartet.”
Bill served Grace Schools for 34 years, holding a variety of positions, among them: Academic Dean of the College and Dean of the Seminary.
Bill and Ella have used the Kosciusko County Community Foundation for much of their charitable giving since 1996, when they established the Bill and Ella Male Charitable Fund. This advised fund allows the Males to recommend grants to charities that align with their values. They enjoy including their daughters in grant recommendations. This year, they recommended a major gift to Grace College & Seminary that was used to purchase the seminary building, now named the “William Male Center for Seminary and Graduate Studies.”
Dr. and Mrs. Male consider their recent financial gift to Grace College & Seminary to be not just a gift, but an investment in the college and seminary and in the
lives of students. Investing in the lives of others has been a passion of Dr. Male ever since that fateful
drive home from Fort Wayne in 1948. He and Ella agree that serving and
giving has brought great joy into their lives. They are thrilled to
have passed on that legacy to their daughters and
their families.
Dr. and Mrs. Male advised a grant from the Bill and Ella Male
Charitable Fund at the Community Foundation to Grace College
& Seminary for the purchase of the building that now houses the
William Male Center for Seminary and Graduate Studies.

Jenny Bynum had a difficult childhood, especially in her teen years, during which time she suffered mental and physical abuse at the hands of her step-mother. Finally, two weeks before high school graduation, Jenny’s father came to the nursing home where Jenny was working. He accused her of stealing from her step-mother. Jenny insisted that she hadn’t, but her father didn’t believe Jenny. The staff at the nursing home was afraid to send Jenny home that night. So, they encouraged Jenny to call her grandparents and ask if they would let her stay with them that night. Jenny’s grandparents did let her stay. In fact,
Jenny has not seen or spoken to her father since that night. That was nearly 20 years ago.
After high school, Jenny got married. Her husband was an alcoholic and also physically and mentally abusive. She stayed for six years. “I’ve heard that you marry what you know, and I guess that’s what I did,”
Jenny said of her first marriage.
A second marriage also failed leaving Jenny all the more determined to get
her life on track. She worked and managed to get ahead and
live independently. Over

time, however, a degenerative condition made it difficult for her to be physically active. Then, she lost her job. The combined job loss and daily pain marked a chapter of “life going downhill.”
Jenny was no longer able to afford her own place. She moved from house to house, depending on the kindness of family and friends who would let her stay. Then, she learned about Fellowship Missions and decided that was her last option. Checking herself in was a turning point.
“Since coming here, they have helped me connect with a doctor. For the first time, I have a regular
physician to help me with the medications I need. I’m getting counseling that I’ve needed for a long time, and the staff was able to get me braces for my knees and a walker. I may even be able to get the double knee replacement surgery I need,” Jenny said. Jenny has also made friends at the shelter. They call her “Giggle Box” because Jenny is, well….giggly.
Jenny’s dream for the future is to have her knee replacement surgery and be able to live independently again. In the meantime, Fellowship Missions is home, “…a place where I feel safe.”
Jenny Bynum is a resident of Fellowship Missions, which received a grant from the Kosciusko REMC
Operation Round Up Fund for furniture for their new homeless shelter located on Winona Avenue.
For a full listing of grants made from the Kosciusko REMC Operation Round Up Fund, see pages 28 & 29.

World-Class Orthopedic Industry – Keeping it in the NeighborhoodWhat would happen if Warsaw and the surrounding area were no longer home to the largest cluster of orthopedic companies in the world? What would happen to the more than 6,500 area residents whose jobs are either directly or indirectly tied to the industry, and their families? What would happen to the businesses and charitable organizations those companies
and employees support? What would happen to area schools, parks, and police and fire departments if the tax base that supports them were greatly diminished?
In 2009, the Orthopedics Capital Foundation (OCF) and OrthoWorx (OWX) were formed to help improve the environment that supports the health of the industry and the community that depends on its success. Lilly Endowment Inc. granted Kosciusko County Community Foundation (KCCF) a three year,
$7 million grant enabling the formation of OCF and OWX.
OCF is a public charity, a supporting organization, to KCCF. OCF is the affiliate listed in the financial information in this annual report (page 37). OCF assets are used to invest in charitable, scientific, and educational projects that strengthen the region and
its ability to retain and grow the orthopedic cluster. The support of Project Lead the Way, highlighted on pages 26 and 27, is an example of a program investment made by OCF to strengthen the community
and the industry. OWX is a membership organization that carries out activities that will benefit both its members and the community. OCF is supported by charitable dollars. OWX is supported by OCF and membership dues. Both entities engage in activities aimed at keeping and growing the orthopedic industry right here at home.
Frequently Asked QuestionsQ. What do OCF and OWX fund?A. OCF funds all of the initiatives that relate to education, talent and workforce development, transportation and logistics, innovation and entrepreneurship, and community enhancement. OWX, which works on behalf of OCF and its goals, also funds branding and awareness (for example the development of orthoworxindiana.com), and the administrative expenses (staffing and overhead) to ensure that there
are people to move forward these initiatives to advance orthopedics for generations to come.
Q. Can my favorite charitable organization apply for a grant from OCF or OWX?A. There is not an open grant application process for either organization. The OWX Board of Directors identifies, through studies, projects that directly relate

Orthopedics Capital Foundation Donors Who Gave to the OrthoWorx Match CampaignIn 2013, near the end of the initial $7 million grant from Lilly Endowment Inc., OCF made a proposal to Lilly Endowment for additional support for its initiatives for the next three years. Lilly Endowment responded with a $4 million outright grant and a matching opportunity for gifts OCF raised from qualified (related to the orthopedic industry) donors. OCF raised $1.2 million in gifts that were matched by Lilly Endowment. A total of $2.6 million of additional funding was raised.

to their mission to keep and grow the orthopedic cluster. They make investments in those projects.
Q. Where have OCF and OWX had the most impact?A. In the area of education. The Cambridge Study OWX sponsored enabled Warsaw Community Schools to position itself for the success of the STEM Academy. More recently, OWX helped fund creation of a mobile STEM laboratory for area elementary schools – the Warsaw Inquiry Learning Laboratory. The formation of orthopedic degrees and certificates through Grace College and Ivy Tech Community College mean local students can receive skills directly related to what orthopedic companies are seeking.
Q. Is OWX an economic development organization, a community development organization, or what?A. None of those. All of those. OWX’s mission is to ensure that the orthopedic capital of the world remains
right here in Warsaw. Sometimes the work relates to economic development – like efforts to train the workforce through investments in K-12 and higher education. Sometimes the work relates to community development – like investments in bicycle and pedestrian trails and in cultural opportunities that help attract outside talent to Warsaw.
Q. What are OCF and OWX working on next?A. They want to keep more Indiana college graduates working in Indiana for orthopedic companies and to stimulate the creation of more orthopedic innovations from universities in Indiana. To that end, OWX has formed a University and Industry Advisory Board, with members like Notre Dame, Indiana University, Grace College and many others to help develop programs of study and research opportunities. OWX is also exploring the possibilities of a research clinic network.

Opportunities Right Here at Home
Caleb Schooley is an aspiring Robotics teacher. He is currently a senior at Warsaw Community High School (WCHS)/Warsaw Area Career Center (WACC). He assists teacher, Mrs. Abbi Richcreek, with a Project Lead the Way (PLTW) Robotics class offered this year at Edgewood Middle School and at WACC. Caleb is receiving dual credits through Grace College for his work with students.
For Mrs. Richcreek, nothing is more rewarding than watching students engage in what they are learning. “I struggled as a young student with written tests,”
Mrs. Richcreek said. “I enjoy allowing students to show me what they’ve learned.”
In PLTW classes, students engage in project-based learning, practicing the subject matter with their hands, tools and technology. Some examples of high school level PLTW classes include Introduction to Engineering Design, Principles of Engineering, Digital
Electronics, Civil Engineering & Architecture, Computers Integrated Manufacturing,
Biotechnology Engineering/Forensic Science and Aerospace Engineering.

Caleb Schooley (middle) helps teach Edgewood Middle School students like Starr Partridge
(left) and Ian Glogovsky (right) about Robotics. Currently, they are building robots that can
move across the floor and drop a ball into a tube.
The Robotics class has been a popular middle school offering. Mrs. Richcreek is especially excited to see kids exposed to engineering and technology at younger ages. But, in order to expand class offerings to students, there have to be teachers qualified in the subject matter. That can be challenging when corporate opportunities in the fields of engineering and technology are much more lucrative than teaching positions. That’s why Mrs. Richcreek has such high hopes for Caleb. Caleb has a love and ability for the subject matter, but he also really enjoys teaching.
“I like helping people learn to program and build the robots,” Caleb said. He credits his love for the subject matter and his desire to teach to Mrs. Richcreek. “She had all of the influence on my career choice. She introduced me to Robotics and I love the way she teaches.”
A grant from the Community Foundation, along with financial support that could be as much as $275,000 (depending on how many schools implement the programs) from the Orthpedics Captial Foundation via OrthoWorx, is making it possible for schools throughout Kosciusko County to bring PLTW classes to K-12 students.
Mrs. Abbi Richcreek is excited
about PLTW courses being
offered to younger students,
thanks in part to a Community
Foundation grant.
