Dear friends:Welcome to Miami! We’d like to extend a warm welcome to attendees of the 2014 National Accelerated Bridge Construction Conference presented by the Accelerated Bridge Construction University Transportation Centerat Florida International University (ABC-UTC) and FIU’s Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering.
Together with our partners, Iowa State University and University of Nevada-Reno, our objective at the newly established ABC-UTC is to advance the frontier of Accelerated Bridge Construction (ABC); develop new ABC knowledge; effectively transfer state-of-the-art ABC knowledge to the profession; develop a next-generation ABC workforce; and collaborate with the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO), Departments of Transportation (DOTs), other UTCs, and the transportation profession to make ABC the best solution for the nation’s aging bridge infrastructure in line with U.S. DOT’s strategic focus on State of Good Repair.
We created this conference in an effort to share with you the most current knowledge and technologies related to ABC. We have lined up an extensive schedule of workshops and sessions as well as several opportunities for networking with industry peers.
We hope you find the conference and workshops worthwhile, and we encourage you to share with us your feedback and experiences.

Accelerated Bridge Construction University Transportation Center (ABC-UTC)www.abc-utc.fiu.edu
Building a safer transportation system, one bridge at a time.
ABC-UTC Consortium Members
The ABC-UTC consortium members have well established, working
relationships with one another that span decades. The ABC-UTC’s research
team is particularly well suited to solving the remaining barriers to widespread
implementation of ABC practices and construction of longer service-life
bridges: Center director Dr. Atorod Azizinamini of FIU is a recognized expert
in ABC, bridge design and design for service life; the University of Nevada-
Reno has nationally and internationally recognized programs in earthquake
engineering, and Iowa State University has long been recognized nationally for
its bridge engineering program, which emphasizes ABC. Further, the research
team includes Mary Lou Ralls, former State Bridge Engineer of Texas and
currently an affiliate of the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department
at FIU. As director of ABC-UTC’s technology transfer, Ms. Ralls ensures the
effective and timely implementation of the results developed.
History of ABC-UTC (www.abc-utc.fiu.edu)
Recognizing the need for a dedicated center for ABC, a group of renowned
U.S. bridge engineering professionals gathered at FIU in November 2010,
three years prior to the establishment of ABC-UTC. The group established
– on a voluntary basis, without external funding and supported entirely by
just $50,000 of seed funding from FIU – the Center for Accelerated Bridge
Construction (abc.fiu.edu) with the objective of helping the bridge profession.
The ABC Center at FIU officially commenced its activities in January 2011, with
a concentration on technology transfer of existing knowledge. Beginning in
March 2011, the ABC Center at FIU offered free webinars on a monthly basis
to engineers and other bridge professionals. These webinars have continued
under ABC-UTC and, on average, attract more than 4,000 bridge professionals
each month. The establishment of the ABC-UTC at FIU, through RITA of U.S.
DOT, has allowed the founders of the ABC Center at FIU to dive further into
their mission of aiding the bridge profession by embarking on many ABC-
related activities such as working to improve ABC workforce development,
undertaking various educational activities and expanding the Center’s
technology transfer activities. The existing ABC Center at FIU created a sturdy
foundation for the new ABC-UTC to hit the ground running. The ABC-UTC is
the only federally funded national center with the sole mission of helping the
nation in the area of ABC. At ABC-UTC, we would like to say thank you to
the entire bridge industry and federal and state agencies for your continued
support, encouragement and active involvement.
