With the Thanksgiving holiday now past and just a few more weeks before

Christmas, all of us on the Delaware 4-H staff send you our best wishes during

these warm times of family and fellowship!

Before February date books become filled with activities, we want to invite you

to join us in bringing fellow and potential leaders together for the 2014

Delaware 4-H Leader Forum, Saturday, February 1….you won’t want

to miss this special day!

We are pleased and excited to be having the event on the campus of Polytech

High School in Woodside, Kent County! The morning program will include a

brief welcome and continental breakfast before we go off to our sessions.

Following the first two workshops, we will be enjoying fellowship with a

special luncheon ceremony as we recognize our Salute to Excellence award

winners. We are honored to be joined this year by Dr. Michelle Rodgers,

Associate Dean and Director of UD Cooperative Extension as 2014 marks the

100th anniversary of the Smith-Lever Act which established the Cooperative

Extension system. Dr. Rodgers will share history on this important

anniversary along with an update on our new UD Extension Volunteer

initiative. The afternoon program will consist of the final workshop and

conclude with an evaluation. We plan to end our day at 3:00 p.m., so you’ll

have time to get home early and start putting all of the new ideas you learned

into action!

Enclosed are the registration form, workshop descriptions, and schedule for

the day. Please be sure to select two choices for each workshop in order of

your preference and return your registration form by January 17th.

Please note that the workshops will be filled on a “first come-first serve”

basis, so the earlier you register the better chance you will have of getting your

first choice. The cost of the Forum is $15.00, which helps to offset lunch.

Stewards of Children!*(1 of 2) ~ Presented by Nikki Mowbray, Director, Stewards of Children Program, YMCA of Delaware DOUBLE SESSION (Session 1 of 2) In Delaware 4-H, there is nothing more important than keeping our children safe as they work in a learning environment with adults. Join new and longtime 4-H leaders in this session that will help refocus awareness on the needs of children and the importance of teaching them in a safe and open setting. This session is strongly recommended for new leaders.

Health Rocks, Train the Trainer ~ Presented by Karen Johnston, New Castle County 4-H Educator

Provides club leaders with the tools to facilitate these lessons in their club or other places youth meet. The lessons teach life skills to youth so they learn to resist tobacco, alcohol and drugs by using good decision-making, critical thinking, and stress management to name a few. The training being offered is the jumping off point for future 4-H leader learning that builds skills in teaching youth how to make healthy lifestyle choices.

Money Matters ~ Presented by Mark Manno, State 4-H Program Leader, University of Delaware

Now that your club is a member of the Delaware 4-H Association, Inc., attend this workshop to learn about the new financial form each club will need to fill out for each tax year, including the one soon coming up! Also, all 4-H clubs need money. Find out about the sources of income available right in your own community! It’s easier than you think and no we’re not talking about bake sales.

First Aid/CPR (1 of 2) ~ Presented by Caroline Romeo, Program Director, 4-H Afterschool, Kent County Cooperative Extension * DOUBLE SESSION

This course is designed to help everyday people learn the skills necessary to identify emergencies and help someone who is in need of life saving CPR. Those who complete this course will receive certification in Adult and pediatric CPR only (Does not include First Aid). (Session 1 of 2)

Mentor Role for Volunteer ~ Presented by Carol Scott, New Castle County, 4-H Educator

This workshop takes a look at the importance of the mentoring role volunteer leaders have with youth in 4-H programs. Participants will take a look at the positive qualities of mentors, appropriate mentor roles and developing the mentor relationship.

Authentic Youth Engagement ~ Presented by Jill Jackson, Sussex County 4-H Agent

In this session you will learn helpful ways to engage youth in planning and implementing many events and activities. Youth should be seen, heard, listened to, taken seriously, and respected. Try their ideas! We will discuss strategies to form youth/adult partnerships which will help strengthen our programs. The session will help adults see youth as critical in the decision making process and will be confident in them.

Picture This, (but Discard That) ~ Presented by Dr. Bill Campbell, Professor, Salisbury University

Learn to select the best photographs to enter in the Delaware State Fair 4-H Photography division. Dr. Campbell has been a DSF 4-H Photography judge for 15 years, helped author the photography categories and rules and owned and operated a professional photography studio for 15 years, will discuss the selection process of what should be entered & what should not. The criteria will be reviewed. Learn how to avoid common mistakes the judges repeatedly see. Learn how to advise 4-H youth which photos to enter for judging, and what photos are “nice” but should not be entered or displayed at the DSF. Remember “Not every photograph taken is exhibition quality.”

Moving On From Conflict ~ Presented by Ernesto B. Lopez, Extension Specialist, 4-H Youth Development

Now more than ever, our 4-H clubs need to be engaged in the greater good of service work in our communities. The impact our children can make in & around our homes and neighborhoods is tremendous. Help learn meaningful strategies on how your club can make an impact that demonstrates the power of the clover!

AGsploration ~ Presented by Sharon Pahlman, 4-H Senior Agent, University of Maryland

AGsploration connects STEM topics to agriculture. Twenty-two hands-on lessons are designed to follow state science standards to help children experience the connection of ag to their lives. Milk in Motion helps youth learn the properties of whole, 2% and skim milk by using Dawn dish detergent & food dye. Handwashing lessons help youth learn about the need to properly wash your hands. Conservation Choices focuses on the many techniques land owners use to conserve our natural resources. Come have fun and gain some new easy- to -replicate lessons that can be adapted to your club program. Maryland ag and Delaware ag are so similar that this program will fit perfectly with your state.

Recognition/Award Opportunities in 4-H ~ Presented by Doug Crouse, Kent County 4-H Educator

National 4-H Congress – National 4-H Conference – National 4-H Engineering Leadership Event -- and More! Attend this workshop to learn about the several different 4-H Out of State Experiences/Competitive events that are available to our Delaware 4-H youth. Each program as well as requirements for each of the events will be reviewed. Come learn more to help your club members take full advantage of these exciting opportunities!

Be Safe, Stay Safe ~ Presented by Sharon Pahlman, 4-H Senior Agent, University of Maryland

How does safety fit in a 4-H program? Experience how hearing and vision awareness can make a big difference in how one thinks about being and remaining safe. Additional hands on activities of safety topics will be shared. The DE Safety Extension agent has some great resources to help you share safety with your club members and families.

Digital Photography—Basic Editing ~ Presented by Michele Walfred, Communications Specialist, 4-H Technology Leader

This hands-on- at the computer will provide beginner basics for preserving your digital photographs, correcting mistakes and some entry-level creativity. Working with Photoshop Elements, learn the tool bar and what these tools do. Introduction to layers and image correction. You will learn best way to transfer an image from the camera, save a file, and avoid common mistakes most people make when editing photos. A more advanced-optional session follows in Session III. This is intended for beginners to digital photo editing.

Wood Science Workshop for your 4-H Club ~ Presented by Clyde Mellin, Sussex County 4-H Leader

Come join us for a Wood Science workshop with a more academic approach learning about trees, conifer vs. deciduous, aging a tree, how wood products effect our every day life etc. As well as a useful hands-on woodworking project for you to construct, take home and enjoy!

Record Books Review ~ Presented Doug Crouse, Kent County 4-H Educator

Have you ever had a member who wanted to complete a 4-H record book and not quite know what steps to take? Record books can be daunting and clubs in each county do things a little differently. Join this informative workshop and get comfortable with a process that is worthwhile and meaningful for both the youth and the club leader.

Fostering Change, Once Service Project at a Time ~ Presented by Mallory Vogl, New Castle County 4-H Educator

Through its pledge of "hands to larger service", 4-H has always had a strong connection with giving back to the community. During this workshop you will learn the impacts of community service on our 4-H members and ways to keep our youth involved. We will offer ways to empower youth to make big changes within their communities. You will also receive information about several community service opportunities on the club, county, state, and national levels.

Diamond Clover Award = 4-H’s Eagle ~ Presented by Mark Manno, State 4-H Program Leader

The Diamond Clover Award was developed in 2005 to give 4-H an award the equivalent of the Boy Scout Eagle. Both awards feature six levels that grow in size and complexity as the member obtains life skills concluding with a major service learning project. A total of 35 pins have been presented to-date. The pins increase in relative value as the 4-H’er obtains life skills. The Diamond Clover is intended to be an optional award a 4-H’er chooses to seek and is not intended to replace existing awards.

Up for the Challenge ~ Presented by Dr. Sue Snider, Professor, University of Delaware

Up for the Challenge is an interactive, hands-on program that encourages youth to make healthy food and beverage choices and to be physically active. Participants will receive a copy of the curriculum, ideas for conducting the lessons, and information on obtaining materials for the program. Clubs that conduct Up for the Challenge and give and return pre- and post-questionnaire will receive $100 for the club.

Take a Walk on the Wild Side… A Workshop to Cover Delaware 4-H’s Wildlife Program ~ Presented by Kristin Cook, Kent County 4-H Educator This training will cover the basics of the Wildlife Program including curriculum available, contest, contest rules, how contest is put together, and some ideas on how to train a team. The second part of the training will review information specific to the 2014 contest; species, foods, habitat evaluation and management practices. Finally, participants will have an opportunity to practice some skills learned in a mock contest type setting. The training will be an indoor training, due to time and location we will not be doing any outdoor training at this workshop.

Picture Perfect - Digital Photography—Advanced ~ Presented by Michele Walfred, Communications Specialist Agent & 4-H Technology Leader

Continue from Basic Editing or jump right in to some advanced techniques. Learn how to use layers, clone tools and much more. Let’s try and restore a “ruined” photo. Learn how to correct under/over exposure, remove objects, and special effects like instantly losing 10 pounds! Session I is not a required to take this session.

Fun Club Crafts ~ Presented by Lindsay Hughes, State 4-H Educator

Crafts are a great way to grab youth’s attention and let their creative vibes run! Come learn a new craft idea for your club meetings.
