Records indicate that Swift Creek Mill was in existence as early as 1663. It is believed to be the oldest grist mill in this country. Henry Randolph I, born in Little Houghton, Northamptonshire, England, migrated to this country about 1640. In 1655, he acquired a large tract of land in Bermuda Hundred on Swift Creek where he erected the present mill.

An heir of Henry Randolph I, William Bland Randolph, deeded the mill to William Rowlett on February 20, 1805, and it became known as Rowlett’s Mill. In 1852, the Rowlett heirs conveyed the mill to the Swift Creek Manufacturing Company.

On May 9th and 10th, 1864, a battle was fought around the mill while General B.F. Butler’s Army of the James attempted to cross Swift Creek. Following the Civil War, the property became Schmidt’s Distillery, making corn whiskey. Following this, the property changed hands several times, was operated as a grist mill and became known in 1929 as Swift Creek Mill. It continued to operate as a grist mill until about 1956.

On December 2, 1965, Swift Creek Mill Playhouse opened its doors. To convert the old grist mill into a dinner theater required an addition to the three story building to house the kitchen, dressing rooms and restrooms. Stairways were built leading to upper and lower dining levels, and to the theatre located on the top floor. Much of the old equipment in the mill was refurbished to lend a rustic atmosphere.

Swift Creek Mill has been preserved as both an historical landmark and cultural outlet for the talent of local artists, skilled actors, directors, designers and technicians whose efforts have made possible the artistic achievements of the Mill. The 300 year old Swift Creek Mill has been made a Virginia Historical Landmark and has been listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

As of fall 2013, Swift Creek Mill is now ADA-compliant, offering increased access and services to persons with disabilities. A monumental task, the renovations were completed following precise guidelines, and the iconic structure continues to retain its historic value and status.

Which Children Does The Mill Serve?Swift Creek Mill Theatre currently serves the Greater Richmond Metropolitan Statistical Area as well as Southside Virginia. The Mill is a popular field trip destination, with students attending from public schools, private schools, preschools and home school groups. Families attend the program as well, especially for Drifty the Snowman plays, which are new every year. On average, 15,000 children from Central- and Southside Virginia rely on Swift Creek Mill for theatre arts education. According to the Virginia Department of Education, 42% of the public school kids that we serve are economically disadvantaged and 54% belong to one or more minorities. In addition, more than 23,000 of these children live with disabilities. Some of these students may never experience professional performing arts - or the educational value of theatre - without a field trip to the Mill.

What Does The Mill Offer?Swift Creek Mill Children’s Theatre has offered educational shows for children for 25 years! The Mill offers three or more Youth Series productions annually during the school year (this season will include five!) Each Youth Series play is selected based on its theatrical, literary and/or educational value, and many are professionally written for the Mill, supporting students' core subjects. The directors, cast and crew are theatre professionals who live in the surrounding areas, and the plays are produced, directed and performed at Swift Creek Mill in order to offer an immersive theatre experience. We state relevant Standards of Learning information and grade level suggestions for the convenience of educators. There is even a character meet-and-greet or Q&A session after each performance that gives kids an opportunity for more in-depth knowledge of professional theatre arts.

Why Are These Field Trips Important?In addition to reaching young students in Chesterfield, Henrico, Hanover and the Tri-Cities, we are helping to educate kids in areas farther away from Richmond, which are reachable because of Swift Creek Mill’s uniquely excellent location – counties like Dinwiddie, Southampton, Nottoway, Mecklenburg and others. The Mill is the only professional theatre in a 75-mile stretch from the James River south to the Virginia state line. East to west this area is almost 200 miles. Therefore, Swift Creek Mill is helping literally thousands of children in underserved areas to have a more well-rounded and innovative education. Even for the children who are able to come only once, it is an experience that expands their horizons and a memory that lasts a lifetime.

I am delighted to welcome my friend John Moon as our guest director for this production. I have known John for many years, and I am thrilled to have his artistic voice guiding this production. I love sitting back and watching another director do his work, and I know that you will enjoy sitting back and enjoying his work, as well.

The last time that the Mill produced this play, I was the resident actor here (in the late 70’s). I played three of the roles, and I still remember it so very fondly! This was one of Buddy Callahan’s favorite scripts, and he directed it several times in the early years of this theater’s existence. Mill audiences loved it! I am so very pleased to offer it to you again, and I hope that you will embrace its comedy and its insights. Thanks for coming, and enjoy the show!

Director John Moon is thrilled to be making his Swift Creek Mill directing debut this summer with You Know I Can't Hear You When the Water's Running. He feels particularly fortunate to be working with such an incredible cast and design team.Local directing projects include Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike, Treasure Island, The Music Man, Is He Dead?, Nunsense, This Wonderful Life, Mousetrap, War Story, Deathtrap, Shirley Valentine, Romeo and Juliet, Stand-Up Tragedy, The All Night Strut and Wait Until Dark. Regional credits include, Loot, Julius Caesar, Botticelli, A Doll House, Spiders Web, Hopscotch, The Day of the Races, Ruthie, Big Criminals and Heaven Can Wait. John received his Masters in directing from Columbia University and lived and worked in New York for ten years before moving back to his native Richmond. He was Dramaturg for TheatreVirginia and later became Associate Artistic Director of Theatre IV. He now runs LifeJourney Films, producing family history documentaries. He is married to Abby Winship and they have two sons, Zac and Dylan.

About the ACtors

FrAnk CreAsy (Herb, Chuck) appeared last year at the Mill in Beyond the Rainbow as Louis Mayer, Sid Luft and Jack Haley. Previous Mill credits include The 39 Steps as Clown 1 and Of Mice and Men as Carlson. Recently, Frank was seen in the Virginia Rep production of Mame, and you might know him from commercial spots in a white lab coat as Dr. Seymour Deadman on WRLH and MyTV for reruns for The Walking Dead. Aside from his cherished time here at the Mill, some of Frank's favorite roles include Saunders in Lend Me A Tenor with Virginia Rep at Willow Lawn; The Apartment in Crumble (Lay Me Down Justin Timberlake) at Firehouse Theatre; Hieronimo in The Spanish Tragedy with Henley Street Theatre; and Max in Laughter On The 23Rd Floor with Richmond Ensemble Theatre. Whether you've enjoyed dinner here at the Mill or elsewhere before attending this performance, Frank hopes you find some food for thought along with a generous helping of laughs from this entertaining and intriguing quartet of stories. He feels blessed to join these talented artists, along with wonderful folks such as yourselves, to celebrate and ponder the wonders of life in this space. And speaking of blessings, Frank thanks his wonderful wife Carol for making all things better. Andrew HAmm (Richard, George) is thrilled to be returning to the Mill stage after appearing as Reverend Lionel Toop in last season's See How They Run. Highlights of his appearances on area stages include Dickens/Scrooge in Mr. Dickens' Christmas Carol, Martin Luther in Wittenberg, Salieri in Amadeus, and many Shakespearean roles for Henley Street/Richmond Shakespeare; the Doctor in The Game of Death: a Doctor Whosical with Free Jambalaya; and the Ensemble of Richmond Triangle Players' This Beautiful City, for which he was honored with a Richmond Theatre Critics Circle award for Best Supporting Actor in a Musical. He is also the creator of the musical Steppin' Out: Joe Jackson's Night and Day, which premiered at RTP and was subsequently showcased in New York City. He would like to thank his kind, generous, and beautiful wife Liz for taking care of their dog and three cats while he was at play practice.rICHArd kOCH (Jack, Salesman, Herbert) is very happy to once again be on Swift Creek Mill Theatre’s stage. Richard is Performing Arts Manager for The Cultural Arts Center at Glen Allen as well as a free-lance actor who has also performed at Theatre at the Bolling-Haxall House, VA Repertory Theatre, Henley Street Theatre, Cadence Theatre & film, TV and radio. Richard is pleased to be working with such a wonderful team. In his spare time, along with the beautiful Miss Vicki, he enjoys rummaging thru antique shops looking for rare two legged milking stools.
