What an impressive group of young people! (Including Kerrie, of course). And we were privileged to have Kay Gordon, the chairperson for GSE in our district, came along also. This was the team’s first “trial run” of their presentations they will be giving to Rotary clubs in Malaysia when they head off in November, so they were keen for any feedback. They certainly received a lot of constructive advice from many of our members on giving presen- tations, as well as some positive praise. The advice offered indicat- ed to me the depth of knowledge and experience of our members, many with first hand experience at giving presentations and working in Asia. A special thank you to Rob Fenton, director of New Generations, for giving us an excellent overview of the Club’s New Gen projects. Rob also gave us an insight into the many acronyms that Rotary use! See inside this In Gear for a summary of Rob’s presentation. What a great result for the Sergeant’s fund! Tony couldn’t believe his luck when so much of the winnings from David Hone’s football tipping contest were generously donated as happy dollars. A big thank you to David for organising the contest, and to the members who donated their winnings. We had the pleasure of welcoming one of our founding members, Peter Quennell, as one of our guests. Peter is currently a Rotarian at Maffra, where he now lives. Also wonderful to see Susan De Bolfo visiting us again, as well as PHF Pat, who accompanied Roy for the evening. Next week is another regular VGC meeting, when Larry Jackson will give his New Member’s talk. We are very much looking forward to hearing what Larry will be telling us about Larry. I would like to remind you all again that we will not have our regular meeting at VGC on 11 th October, but instead we will be attending the District GSE team farewell dinner on 12 th October at the Wheel- ers Hill International Hotel. As we are Kerrie’s sponsor club, I urge all members to support Kerrie and her team by attending this dinner. Going by the “taster” we were given last week, I am sure we can look forward to some excellent presentations. Please let Tony McKenna know if you will be attending. Report for New Generations (aka “AC” – Acronym Central) Our motto: If it doesn’t have an acronym, it doesn’t get into New Generations A brief outline of our programme for the year: RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Assembly) Leadership training programme for community minded youth aged 18 – 30. We didn’t find a suitable candidate to attend this year, so in-stead sponsored Rhiannon Crowley to attend as a leader. We

will have Rhiannon come to a meeting shortly to discuss her ex-periences at RYLA MJI @ SSC (Mock job interviews at Sandringham Secondary College) We have run this programme for many years, where our mem-bers undertake mock job interviews with year 10 students at Sandringham Secondary College. A very rewarding experi-ence for both the students and our members NYSF (National Youth Science Forum) A twelve-day science programme in January 2013 at ANU, Canberra, for year 11 students moving into year 12, to give science students a taste of different science careers and studies. We had two applicants this year – Gulizar Onat and Olivia Tunks – who were interviewed by our panel. We could not decide so sent both to District for the next round of interviews. As we’ve reported, both girls were accepted, and both are over the moon to be going. Again, we’ll get both girls along to talk to our members about their expectations and experiences MUNA (Model United Nations Assembly) A gathering at Parliament House, Melbourne over a weekend in May each year, where teams of two year 10 students repre-

sent a nation to debate up to 10 resolutions with other ‘nation’. We have assisted at MUNA for the past 5 years or so, and all who volunteer are blown away by the standard of debate that ensues. I thoroughly recommend that you participate in this, if you possibly can.

RYPEN (Rotary Youth Programme of Enrichment) A three day camp for students for students aged 14 – 17, held in May each year. We have supported students in this worth-while programme in the past, and expect we will again this year Interact (stands for Interact) As we are all aware, it was unfortunately necessary to wind up the Interact Club at Sandringham Secondary College in June, but we have approached Mentone Girls Secondary College to see if they are interested in forming a club there. John Beaty, Pres John Manks and Peter Flude met with the principal last

week and she has given her support to the proposal, provided she can find a teacher who is willing to take it on. We will keep in touch with them. Overall, it promises to be a good year for NG, or NewGens, or New Generations. Rob Fenton

Inner Wheel Bali We have had our first meeting of Inner Wheel, the very first in all of Indonesia! We have around 25 members. This was taken at our first meeting. We have our Charter dinner in December, and the In-ternational President for Inner Wheel is attending, very exciting! I will stay in Rotary for the time being. I'll see how juggling so much voluntary work goes! There are quite a few Rotarians joining Inner Wheel, which is wonderful. Should any Inner Wheel ladies visit Bali, they are more than welcome to come to a meeting. We meet on the first Tuesday of the month at the Canggu Club at 3pm. Our first project is to build toilets in re-mote schools, and supply library books. We have decided that we will have a carrot for them...they will need to have a clean village! This will then also hopefully achieve a very important environmental need in Bali. Clare McAlaney

This Week’s Speakers; Kerrie Geard and the Outbound GSE Team Topic; First Presentation Run Through RCOB member PP Kerrie Geard is the Team Leader for the District 9810 GSE team visit to District 3300 Malaysia in November this year. The team members are; Kylie McMillan, sponsored by Rotary Club of Hampton. Jayde Lovell, sponsored by Rotary Club of Moorleigh/Moorabbin. Peter Schmidt, sponsored by Rotary Club of Bentleigh Moorabbin Central Michael Johnson sponsored by Rotary Club of Templestowe.

They have been busy preparing their group presen-tation and this was the first opportunity to run it through before an audience to rehearse timings and to seek feedback. Clearly there was plenty of technical skill and innovation in the group and they had made a good start on their task. The RCOB members were able to give them plenty of useful constructive advice on presentation and cross-cultural issues which arose from the presenta-tion.

Mike, Kylie and Peter after the presentation (Jayde had to leave and missed the photo shoot)

We look forward to seeing the final version at the Farewell Dinner on Friday 12th October. Details of this Dinner are on page 5 of this copy of In Gear.
