New Fresh Market and Processing Potato Clones in the Wisconsin Potato Breeding Program Pipeline Félix Navarro, Bryan Bowen, Mary Lemere, and Jiwan Palta Introduction A goal of the UW Potato Breeding Program is to develop genetically superior russet potato cultivars that satisfy or exceed the standard for yield and grade for the fresh market and processing markets. Each year parental lines with desired traits are crossed and progenies are evaluated for fresh market and processing traits, emphasizing early selection evaluation in Central WI and other environments Objectives: Development of alternatives for the fresh market to varieties like Goldrush, Russet Norkotah or Silverton. Developing processing russet varieties with more consistent agronomic performance compared to Russet Burbank while closely retaining Burbanks’ French fry attributes. Breeding and Selection Methods Each year: Parental lines with desired traits are crossed and progenies are evaluated for fresh market and processing traits. Early Selection: in field year 1-2 clones are evaluated for fresh market or processing traits at Rhinelander ARS. Year 3-5: Clones are more intensively evaluated for agronomic, disease, fresh market and processing potential at various locations: Hancock ARS, Rhinelander ARS and out of WI. Year 6+: Evaluation in WI (HARS, RARS, Antigo) regional, national trials and some locations in Canada (MB, ON, NB): Agronomic performance and processing traits.
